“Education is all a matter of building bridges.”
— Ralph Ellison
The beginning of a new academic year is a chance to set new goals and plan for the future.
At UCLA Extension, that means growing to meet the needs of more Angelenos, expanding access to education and finding new ways to connect with our community. In the coming year, UCLA Extension will open a hub at the new UCLA Downtown campus, a place of learning for people of all ages and from all walks of life, right in the heart of the city.
Right now, our new downtown location is a blank slate–empty floors that look nothing like the classrooms and offices they will soon become. Building a space where our community can thrive will take planning and time, and while we would love to open the doors tomorrow, we know that there is much to do before we reach that goal. I’m aware of the challenges ahead, but I also know the value of our efforts.
Many of you may be at a similar stage in your professional and personal lives. Maybe you’ve decided it’s time to explore a new career, or that you’re ready to dedicate yourself to a long-harbored passion. Perhaps you’re simply gathering the courage to try something new. These moments are exhilarating, but they can also be daunting. Building a future, like building out a new space, takes time and patience. But before long, I know your efforts will take shape and turn into something big.
So, whether you’re a new student or you already have several quarters under your belt, know that UCLA Extension will always be a place where you can grow. Just keep learning. I can’t wait to see what we build together.
Best Wishes,
Eric A. Bullard, Ph.D. Dean, Continuing Education and UCLA ExtensionAt UCLA Extension, one of our key strategic priorities is to provide access, equity, and inclusion in all of our offerings. Our academic programs empower people to build better futures for themselves and their communities. This is a mission we do not take lightly, knowing that the impact will positively transform the demographic makeup of the fields and industries in which our students work.
For this reason, we established the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Committee, a body that consists of representatives from UCLA Extension students, instructors and staff. The committee’s charge is to foster and guide the development of a more inclusive and equity-based culture at UCLA Extension that continues to support and strengthen diverse backgrounds, identities and points of view.

June 23, 2023
On June 23, UCLA Extension honored recent graduates from more than 100 of its professional certificate programs with a ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Over 700 students–plus many of the friends, family members, faculty and staff who supported them–were on hand for an event that celebrated scholarship, community, and the determination and resilience of continuing education students from all walks of life.
Dean of Continuing Education and UCLA Extension Eric A. Bullard presided over what he called his “favorite day of the year.” Joined on stage by academic deans and executive staff, Bullard congratulated graduates for “overcoming obstacles, balancing a workload with school and family commitments, and looking at the difficulty of completing a certificate.”
Stephen Cheung, a two-time UCLA graduate and the CEO of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, delivered a commencement address. Drawing on his journey from working in sweatshops in Los Angeles as a child to studying psychobiology at UCLA, and eventually dedicating himself to public policy and social justice. “Sometimes it is just as important to explore and learn what you don’t want to do, and it is okay not to have your entire life all mapped out,” Cheung said.
In his closing remarks, Bullard welcomed graduates as “True Bruins” and official UCLA alumni. “Your time at UCLA Extension is just one small chapter in the story of your life, there is so much more ahead of you.”

Each quarter, we offer a glimpse into one of our popular certificate programs. This fall, we focus on the Infection Prevention and Control Certificate.
Today, more than ever, health care professionals with infection prevention and control training are highly in demand. These Infection Preventionists are educators whose job it is to proactively address, create awareness around, and work to reduce avoidable germ and disease spread in hospitals and health care facilities.
Our Infection Prevention and Control Certificate offers nurses, public health practitioners, and other allied health professionals the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills required to become certified in this dynamic field. Our program is offered 100% online and can be completed in one year. The infection prevention
and control program consists of six 4-unit, postbaccalaureate courses, collectively designed to provide the fundamental knowledge required of candidates seeking jobs in the field. The curriculum aligns with the evidence-based competency model of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and serves as a foundation to prepare for the certification exam administered by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC).
The Infection Prevention and Control Certificate is a collaboration between the top 10-ranked, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and top five-ranked, UCLA Health. Our instructors are industry experts with invaluable professional and employment insights. This program is perfect for…
• Professionals in health care and allied health specialties pursuing Infection Preventionist roles.
• Individuals with health care-related field experience in biology, lab technology, medicine, nursing, public health, etc.
• Public health practitioners interested in infection prevention training for acute care hospital settings.
