CELEBRATE The 32nd Annual Alumni and Student Recognition Luncheon was held April 19, 2019, in the BrewerHegeman Conference Center at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA). The luncheon’s focus was celebrating the a lu m ni, stu dents, a nd fr iends of the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Department. A special celebration of the 100th anniversary of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) student organization also took place. The purpose of this newsletter is to highlight the contributions, achievements, and scholarship that we celebrated.

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS President Davis celebrated with alumni, faculty, and students. He shared about current activities that the students and alumni engage in to support UCA’s mission. He focused on the crucial role that professionals from Family & Consumer Sciences play in local, state, and national communities.

MAIN STREET ARKANSAS Susan Shaddox is an Inter ior Design consultant at the Department of Arkansas Heritage where she has been for the last 13 years. Susan is originally from Lonoke, Arkansas but has been a Conway resident since 1986. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Interior Design in 2006 from UCA, graduating Summa Cum Laude. Susan works closely with the Main Street Arkansas program, offering technical assistance to property owners who have buildings in historic districts throughout the state. In this role, she assists with the grant and tax credit program for National Register listed properties. Susan celebrates in many areas of her important work. She shared with the attendees some of her current projects and how her time in the FACS program prepared her for her career. Susan has been married to Conway veterinarian, Dr. Ken Shaddox, for 33 years. They have two sons, two grandchildren, and eight rescue dogs. When not working and playing with Grandchildren, Susan is an avid animal advocate serving on three non-profit boards for animal welfare.

REMARKS FROM ADMINISTRATION DEAN ISHEE Dean Ishee shared future plans from the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences (CHBS). With ground breaking coming up in August for the new Integrated Health Sciences Building, the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences will celebrate with others from CHBS in interprofessional education opportunities. The first floor of the new building will house an Interprofessional Teaching Clinic in which students from FACS will work with clients to enhance the interior design of their homes for safety, learn to cook flavorful and healthy meals, explore avenues to financial success, and use nutrition to manage disease states.

Dr. Kale Gober, Vice-President for University Advancement & President of the UCA Foundation, shared the plans to increase funding for more endowed scholarships. By increasing the endowed scholarships, more student’s success can be celebrated.

AAFCS CELEBRATES UCA STUDENT UNIT TURNS 100! The UCA student unit of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) celebrated a milestone as the oldest student organization at UCA in the 2019 year. The organization was presented with a proclamation from the National AAFCS CEO, Carolyn Jackson, as well as a proclamation from the Arkansas Affiliate of AAFCS. The organization celebrated du r ing FCCLA w eek on FCS Educator Day by providing refreshments and sharing about the organization and profession. 8


DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS CECILY BULLARD Each year the FACS Alumni Association honors a friend of the department for the Distinguished Service Award. This year, two awards were given. Mrs. Cecily Bullard has never missed an alumni luncheon and has helped many students achieve their academic goals through the Cecily CoffeltBullard Scholarship. Mrs. Bullard is a dedicated professional, who is always seeking to support students. Each year she personally pays for student AAFCS officers to attend the state AAFCS Conference as well as supports the local AAFCS Student Unit. Mrs. Bullard’s unwavering support of the students and FACS department exemplifies the mission of the profession to “improve the lives” of others. Mrs. Bullard is an education graduate of the UCA Family & Consumer Science program.

MR. ANDREW HIEGEL Mr. Andrew Hiegel and h is w ife, Mar y Ann, ar e long -time supporters of FACS through the Mary Ann and Andrew Hiegel endowed scholarship. Last year Mary Ann and Andrew donated additional funds to renovate McAlister 216 into a multi-media curriculum lab, which has elevated the FACS Education program. This year, the Hiegels have provided the FACS Department with an additional donation to renovate McAlister 102 into an active learning classroom. Mary Ann’s Room, as it will be named, will be a springboard for our future Research Center for Healthy & Sustainable Families. Mr. Hiegel’s unfailing support of the students and facilities will impact graduates and therefore the state of Arkansas for decades to come.

DR. ALICIA LANDRY

Dr. Alicia Landry w as selected as the Young Achiever for 2019. Dr. Landry completed the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition in 2004 from UCA. She went on to complete her dietetic internship at Louisiana Tech University in 2006 and the PhD in Nutrition and Food Systems in 2011 from the University of Southern Mississippi. As an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, Alicia received the prestigious Nina Bell Suggs Endowed Professor award. She came to UCA in 2015 as an Assistant Professor and in 2017 became the Dietetic Internship Director. Dr. Landry is a ServeSafe Instructor and Exam Proctor as well as a School Nutrition Specialist with the School Nutrition Association. She leads student research by serving on dissertation and thesis committees, often chairing these committees and publishes widely in childhood nutrition and community based nutrition program research. Dr. Landry serves UCA on the Employee Health and Wellness Committee as well as the department and college on curriculum committees. Alicia and her husband, Taylor, live in Conway with their two dogs, Nadine and Margie and one cat, Charlie.

2019 OUTSTANDING FACS STUDENT JOSHUA EDDINGER-LUCERO

Each year the department recognizes an outstanding student who demonstrates academic excellence, a heart for service, and professional behavior. The 2019 Outstanding Student is Joshua Eddinger-Lucero. Joshua is on track to graduate in December with a double major in Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Political Science. Joshua has served in many leadership roles throughout his college career. Joshua has served at the state level as the Chair of the student section of ArAFCS and at the national level as Co-Chair of the student section of AAFCS. Additionally, Joshua served in the 2018-2019 school year as the UCA Student Government Association President. There are many things to celebrate about this amazing student leader.


DISTINGUISHED ALUMNA MARY WELLS

Mary Smith, ear n ed the B achelo r of Science in Education degree in Family & Consumer Sciences in 1983 and began her teaching career at Mississippi County High School in West Ridge, AR. In 1986, she began graduate courses at UCA and started teaching at Manila Public Schools where she currently serves as a Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) sponsor. She served on the Arkansas Career Education Curriculum committees to revise and pilot courses at the secondary level in the Chemistry of Food and Advanced Nutrition and Dietetics. Mary was instrumental in the Chemistry of Food course being a third science option along with biology and chemistry in Arkansas high schools. She holds several professional memberships and certifications including ServeSafe Instructor and Exam Proctor, Cooperative Extension Wellness Ambassador, Arkansas Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences, and Arkansas Association for Career and Technical Education. Mary is also the mother of FACS graduate Scout Smith, and UCA graduate Tanner Smith. Mary and her husband reside in Manila and both are school teachers. Mary has so much to celebrate!

Mary Wells is on e of ou r tw o aw ar d r ecip ients this year. Mary earned the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from UCA in 1997. In 2003 she completed the Master of Science in Health Sciences from the University of Arkansas and began her career as a Community Health Educator at the Jones Center for Families in Springdale, AR. In 2005, she became the Community Health Promotion Specialist for the Arkansas Department of Health in Beebe and completed her Dietetic Internship at UCA in 2007 before moving into the ADH Children in Schools Section Chief position in 2008. Since 2013, Mary Wells has been the Nutrition Counselor and Program Facilitator at the Little Rock Athletic Club. She is involved with the Little Rock Racquet Club and Rock City Running. Mary is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and currently serves as the Arkansas delegate to the House of Delegates, the governing body of the Academy. An avid runner, Mary inspires others as Chairman and Assistant Coach of Girls on the Run of Central Arkansas. Mary and her husband Troy and children live in Little Rock.

Donors, faculty, students, and their families had the opportunity to exchange stories and gather at the Scholarship Reception.
