Dear Readers, As I write this we are still battling Covid 19 (see page 38) and the uncertainty as to how long it will be with us. However, the one thing which is clear is that many of us can help others. The mental Health Foundation state: “Kindness could transform our schools, places of work, communities and families.

Let’s shape a society that tips the balance in favour of good mental health, for all of us, but especially for those who are most vulnerable.”

Has good news‌ Firstly, Readers might be interested to know that since Sep 2018, we have changed our name from Newbury & District Cancer Care Trust to Newbury Cancer Care (less of a mouthful) and have re-located and are now based in the Rosemary Centre at West Berkshire Community Hospital.

We are an independent charity, founded in 1984 to help local people who have been diagnosed with cancer and, in certain circumstances, other life-threatening illnesses. We offer help and give practical help and information to patients and their families living in West Berkshire.

The Rosemary Appeal helped to bring advanced Cancer and Renal care to the people of Newbury and West Berkshire and Chemotherapy and Dialysis now take place in The Greenham Trust Wing. In the main hospital building there are four Rainbow Rooms, two on Highclere Ward and two on Donnington Ward. These rooms provide facilities combining the comfort of a private room with connecting doors to an adjoining family room, equipped with a kitchenette and a sofa bed. These adjoining rooms allow family members to stay at the hospital with their loved one who is at the end stage of life.

Our number one priority is making as positive an impact on as many people as we can.

To do this, we offer different forms of help and assistance to those in the community.

Be Prepared… but don’t panic!

Zombie apocalypse movies are perennially popular.

Human beings love to imagine how we might survive after a global disaster.

Recent flooding and the coronavirus have prompted an interest in ‘prepping’, as in ‘prepping for disaster’. Preppers have historically been cast alongside conspiracy theorists, and American survivalists, who build bunkers, live ‘off-grid’ and are scarier than any imaginary zombie.

As flooding and extreme weather become ‘normal’ events in the UK, and every year seems to bring a new pandemic threat it’s easy to see why people feel helpless, and why ‘prepping’ becomes seductive. Should we prepare for imminent disaster?

The answer isn’t a straightforward yes or no.

In this country we are fortunate that food is plentiful. However, food is supplied on a ‘just-in-time’ basis, using predictions based on the public’s past shopping habits. If everyone shops normally, supply and demand remain balanced, but if large numbers of people suddenly panic-buy more than usual to stockpile food, shelves are stripped bare pretty quickly.

It makes sense to be aware of this and to think about how we might manage if there was a temporary hiccup in our own food supply chain, perhaps because poor weather or flooding prevents us from accessing shops, or because we’re confined to our home through illness or quarantine.

It does no harm to plan how we might be more self-reliant for a week or so, and to make sure that we have a basic emergency store cupboard. I would advise against specialist

emergency food packs you see advertised. They are expensive, and freeze-dried food tastes like garden mulch. A few extra tins in your weekly shop is easy for most people to achieve.

Remember, in most instances you will already have food in, which can be used up first.

Useful items for an emergency store cupboard: tinned meats, tinned vegetables, tinned beans, pulses and chickpeas, tinned soups and packet soups, tinned fruit, a large bag of rice, a large bag of porridge oats, cooking oil, salt, honey, long-life milk, long-life orange juice, packs of cereal, cereal and protein bars, dried fruit. If you live in an area where flooding and therefore water contamination is likely allow 2 litres of bottled water per person per day for drinking and cooking.

A simple emergency store cupboard can be built up over a couple of months quite easily by adding a few extras into your weekly shop.

A can opener is essential. Torches, batteries, and a camping stove insure against loss of electricity, and loo roll, bleach, hand sanitiser, paracetamol, ibuprofen, plasters and disinfectant are useful health and medical items.

If you live in a flood zone, make sure your supplies are stored high up. Use a vermin-proof storage box in the coolest place possible, and every so often move items out into your regular cupboards, and replace them, to make sure that nothing goes beyond its sell-by date.

One last thing. We all have important documents filed away such as birth certificates, passports, insurance documents and house deeds. Ideally these should be stored in a fire and waterproof deed box to protect them.

A little thought and preparation goes a long way. No bunker required!

The Book Nook

From thrillers to gardening, there’s something to suit most readers this month…

Alice – Christina Henry If you enjoy twisted fairy tales, this book (and its sequel, Red Queen) needs to be on your reading list. The story begins with Alice, who’s been locked up in an asylum for a decade after encountering the Rabbit. She escapes with her neighbouring cellmate and they set off on a journey that sees them encountering various characters from the beloved children’s tale. This is definitely not a story for children however; it’s horrifying, gruesome and as dark as they come.

The Mercies – Kiran Millwood Hargrave The tiny Norwegian community of Vardø is devastated when most of its men are killed at sea in one night. The women have to come together to survive. Peaky Blinders: The Real Story of Birmingham’s most notorious gangs – Carl Chinn If you love the TV series, you might enjoy reading about some of the real peaky blinders who lived, fought and evaded the law in Birmingham a century ago. Amongst them was the author’s own great-grandfather.

Unlike the show, the book doesn’t glamourise the men or the deeds. As Chinn states, the peaky blinders were often “unsavoury, unglamorous and unworthy of respect”. Instead, the book provides a wellresearched, fascinating insight into historical gang violence.

Should I consider Shared Ownership

to get onto the property ladder?

Is Shared Ownership a good idea?

Shared Ownership is a good idea if you are eager to get onto the property ladder but you simply do not have the funds to buy a property outright. You will have security knowing that as long as you pay your rent and mortgage repayments you can continue to live in the property.

If you have a preferred location you should do some research online to see what shared ownership properties are available in that area.

You will still need both a deposit and possibly a mortgage to buy into a Shared Ownership property so it is important to have your finances in place before you go house hunting.

What is Shared Ownership?

Shared Ownership is a government initiated scheme which was created to allow people to buy a share in a property while paying rent on the remainder.

How does Shared Ownership work?

Shared Ownership properties are always leasehold (although the properties themselves can be flats or houses). You go into partnership with a housing association and buy a share in a property (between 25-75%) and pay rent on the rest. Although you will only be buying a share, you will still have sole occupancy rights.

The housing association continues to own the remaining share of the property and you pay rent on that remaining share. The housing association charge a fixed amount of rent based on the value of the property which will be a maximum of 3%. Shared Ownership can therefore be much cheaper than privately renting and you can sell your share of the property at any time.

As well as the usual considerations when buying a house, there are issues specific to Shared Ownership which you need to think about, such as: • The rent due to the housing association • Your rights regarding ‘Staircasing’ (the process of buying additional shares in your property) • Any restrictions on selling the property

It’s several weeks since my New Year resolution to lose weight and get fit. It’s cold and damp outside. The gym is miles away, and there’s a TV program on about a knitting group in Nicaragua that looks interesting, and this sofa is ever so comfortable.

Start slowly.

Does your determination and energy to get fit after New Year’s Day seems to run out sooner each year? Do you need to get fit?

Do you need to lose weight? Do you know you’ll feel better if you do? It’s so much easier to fall back into old habits than to actively make a difference to our health isn’t it? So how do we stay motivated?

Motivation is all in the mind. There is no physical difference between those who get fit and those who get fat. The fit people are just those who manage to leave the house and move their bodies. Clearly, we need to help our mind overcome the inertia currently preventing us moving from the couch.

It’s important to pace yourself. Just because your neighbour can sprint 5 km in 20 minutes doesn’t mean that you have to. Whatever exercise you are doing find a pace that is comfortable while still pushing you. As you exercise more you will gradually increase your exertion. Push yourself too hard at the beginning and exercise will seem exhausting, painful and make it harder to get going the next time.

Once you begin to see your performance improving, you’ll get excited about beating your personal best and want to prove to yourself just how good you are.

Get up, get dressed, get out.

Set a short-term goal.

It sounds simple but getting out of the door is the biggest hurdle. If you can force yourself to go through the motions of getting into your exercise kit, walking to the door and out of the house you’re 90% of the way towards actually exercising. If you’re standing outside dressed for exercise it’s harder to change your mind and sneak back inside for another slice of cake.

The ultimate goal might be to fit into a size 10 dress, or have a perfect six pack with matching biceps, but realistically that’s probably more than a few months away. Pick a goal that you can achieve within the next two months. Dropping one dress size, being able to run non-stop for 1 km, being able to do a proper pull-up.

Achieving goals is as important as setting them when trying to keep your motivation high. Small successful steps build one on the other until all of a sudden, your ultimate goal is just within reach.

Set an alarm to tell you when it’s time for your exercise class, run, etc. Make sure you’ve got workout gear that makes you feel good. Something stylish, comfortable, colourful, or high-tech; it doesn’t matter, use whatever works for you. Make the getting dressed part something to look

Keep on keeping on. Don’t over-think it, just do it.

Celebrate the Past - Challenge The Future This May the bank holiday was changed so that we could celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day together as a nation – the declaration of the allied victory in Europe. There was a national holiday also in April for the Easter celebration where the Church, in particular, celebrates the victory of Jesus over death on Easter Sunday.

But what does victory mean?

In Europe seventy-five years ago it was the end of a struggle which began many years before. So far as our own nation was concerned, the war had started in 1939, but for others the evil of the German Nazi regime had been present for years. The war required an alliance of nations and peoples fighting against a great evil – but unusually for us, we felt our own borders threatened by the Nazi menace. Victory meant

They had the hard work still to do, but they found the strength to do it. that the threat was gone and we were safe. But that left two challenges.

The first big challenge of victory was that the enemy who had united people was defeated and gone. Without the enemy as a focus, what would hold them together in the future. The threat which had motivated heroic efforts and mobilised a nation was no longer present. What was left was a conviction that the world had to change, a conviction which was carried by many with a moral purpose which brought into being a system of social security and universal healthcare – the welfare state and the national health service. My parents, who worked hard all their lives, relied on benefits for a time during the 1970s when jobs were scarce – for our family it was a lifeline. We were helped by the legacy of a nation which still remembered how much it could achieve when people were united, and whose ethic of service and giving had been forged under the threat of invasion. Over time, of course, the effect has diluted and our differing interests have meant that our energies have been more widely dispersed. Somehow, it always seems to take an enemy or a threat to energise real collective action for the common good – and sometimes our leaders are tempted to reunite us by creating the illusion of an enemy or a threat.

They found it hard, and made many mistakes, but also testified that they found strength given by God to see it through.

They had the hard work still to do, but they found the strength to do it, which has carried through to this day. So as we enjoy our celebrations of victory (as we should) lets also ponder what our collective sense of moral purpose might be today – what holds us together beyond the celebration – and also what energises for our common task.

In the meantime – enjoy all that you have – and think of others!

Most children love to draw or paint. While so many of us are stuck at home it’s a great way to keep them occupied too.

A few friends wondered if they should be encouraging more ‘mind-improving’ activities such as maths and English worksheets. Art tends to be viewed as a ‘bolt-on’ extra in school. But art is so much more, and along with music should be given a much more prominent role within education.

Drawing, painting and sculpting help mental, social, and emotional development. Creating art boosts our ability to analyse and problem-solve.

As a conscript teacher in the ‘school of mum and dad’ it’s easy to fall into the trap of ’right and wrong’ when we would be better to remember that art should be about the process rather than the product.

As children manipulate a paintbrush or pencil, their fine motor skills improve. As they mix colours they learn about proportions, and when they experiment with different media they dabble in science. Most importantly if a child feels good about being able to experiment while creating art, it boosts their self-confidence.

Children who feel able to try things and make mistakes develop more creative ways to think which extend beyond their artwork.

Lots of parents don’t feel comfortable with art, because unlike maths there isn’t a ‘correct’ way to do it’, or they feel they have to intervene to make things look ’right’. So, I’ve put together a list of art websites that offer tutorials aimed at the children themselves rather than at their parents. They all use real world art equipment, not digital platforms and have all been tested by my own 10-year-old artist-in-residence.

artforkidshub.com - This is a lovely art website for kids. It has hundreds of tutorials, mostly for drawing, but some painting and

origami too. Mr Hub does the drawings in a slightly speeded up time scale, but the instructions are clear and easy to follow.

artprojectsforkids.org - This site is run by an art teacher who has put together lots of fun art projects for kids. There are drawing lessons and craft projects. stepbysteppainting.net - A great

site packed with online step-by-step canvas painting tutorials, suitable for all the family, with a complete section dedicated to kids.

Older kids who are keen artists will love the more grown-up painting tutorials too.

Lindsay teaches live sessions on Facebook a couple of times per week. The tutorials then stay on the page so that children can access them at any time. She’s an encouraging, enthusiastic teacher and paints along with her sons, who are funny, lively and very normal, and this is the big bonus for my own son, who is missing his friends and the banter of the classroom. We probably underestimate how much of the important stuff in a school day doesn’t seem important at all. The silly incidents and funny anecdotes our children bring home are woven into the tapestry of their day-to-day existence, and at the moment that part of their lives is on hold.

Lindsay and her boys are a breath of fresh air in our house. The art is great, and she also leads adult classes for when the kids are in bed. Cannot recommend this one highly enough.

You can remortgage if you work for yourself The total value of remortgages in the last 12 months has reached a combined worth of over £84 billion.

According to UK Finance, remortgage growth aligned with customers reviewing their mortgage at the end of a fixed term to lock into a lower rate before the country leaves the EU. In addition, an uncertain property market caused homeowners to stay put and add value to their existing property rather than move.

An evidentially resilient slice of the market, remortgaging your home can be a way of releasing equity, changing the terms of your mortgage or an opportunity to switch providers.

Is it a complicated process if you’re self-employed? The way lenders treat affordability for self-employed customers varies considerably between providers, with some having very rigid policies while others are more open to understanding differing circumstances. However, if you’re conscientious and prepared when evidencing your finances to a lender, there is absolutely no reason why remortgaging couldn’t work for you.

Being able to prove your income is of the utmost importance. The common approach is to show at least two years’ worth of business accounts – three would be preferable.

Most lenders will require the paperwork to be signed off by a chartered or certified accountant. If you can’t demonstrate any business accounts, then at least two years’ tax returns are the next best option and you will be assessed on profits, rather than turnover. If you are a contractor, you will need to provide your current contract and employment history.

Spring is a time of renewal, a time of optimism and a time to relish the wonders of nature.

Although human creativity has done much to harness nature - in things like our beautiful gardens - if we are not careful, and we try and work against nature, we risk undermining the very things we value. My own inclinations are to work with nature as far as possible and that is never more true than when I am enjoying the delights of spring in my own garden.

Not everything can be described as a delight though. Weeding - and there is quite a bit of that at this time of year - can seem a chore to many. Rather than reach for chemicals I prefer to weed by hand. Not only does this get me up close and personal with all the plants, I find it rather therapeutic. For those of you not yet persuaded, I promise you will find it quicker, cheaper, healthier and more effective than any other method.

After weeding it is important at this time of year to mulch and feed the plants. I use our own garden compost but you can use well rotted horse manure or other organic materials found in most garden centres. This helps keep down the next batch of weeds, it improves the soil and keeps in moisture. When it comes to feeding I like plants to look after themselves as much as possible, they grow tougher that way. For roses and vegetables I make my own comfrey juice but organic shop bought feeds are also good.

For dry spells I like to capture and store rainwater. It is so much better than tap water for most plants. Invest in a water barrel as large as you have space for - and it will pay back dividends for years to come.

If you have a pond there is a fair chance that you will get an infestation of unwanted algae at some point. The natural way to keep your water clear is to add a bundle of barley straw to the water, especially in April. Don’t be tempted by the liquid extract alternative, it is going to be withdrawn from sale this summer anyway.

When it comes to looking after the lawn, moss regularly comes in as deadly enemy number one. The first priority in my view is to nurture healthy grass so it can compete better with any moss or weeds. But if you want to tackle the moss directly there is now an alternative to nasty chemicals and all that back-breaking raking. There is a moss eating bacteria (several brands exist). Not only does the bacteria reduce the amount of moss, it also excretes a natural fertiliser that feeds the grass. There are also bacteria that eat the ‘thatch’ or detritus in the grass which also comes with a natural mycorrhiza fungi that helps strengthen the grass roots. Don’t you just love it when some clever person comes up with this stuff.

Doing the right thing by your garden is a key part of doing the right thing by the planet.

As they say: think global, act local. And as we all know a natural, healthy, beautiful garden is good for the spirit, especially when it is bathed in a bit of spring sunshine.

20g unsalted butter

FOR THE MERINGUE 4 medium egg whites 225g caster sugar

TIP

For the pastry case, roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm round loose-based fluted flan tin. Prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C, 180C fan, Gas Mark 6.

For the filling, spread the rhubarb in a large shallow roasting tin and sprinkle with 50g of the sugar and the orange zest and juice.

Cover with foil and bake for 20-25 minutes until tender. Transfer to a heatproof bowl and leave to cool.

Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and fill with ceramic baking beans (see Tip). Bake for 10 minutes then remove the lining and beans and bake for a further 5-10 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Remove from the oven and set aside.

Place the rhubarb in a large non-stick pan with the rest of the caster sugar, egg yolks, cornflour and butter. Heat gently, stirring all the time, until the mixture comes to the boil. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring, until thickened. Leave to cool then spread in the pastry case.

To make the meringue, whisk the egg whites in a clean, greasefree bowl until stiffly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, a spoonful at a time, to form a firm, glossy meringue. Spoon over the rhubarb filling and swirl with the back of a spoon. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the meringue is golden. Serve warm or cold.

If you don’t have ceramic baking beans then use dried beans or lentils instead.

Understanding Global Warming

The ten-year anniversary of the volcanic ash cloud is nothing to celebrate. All flights in and out of the UK and several other European countries were suspended while ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moved south. Up to 4,000 flights were cancelled with no flights allowed into UK airspace for days amid fears of engine damage. Lives were thrown upside down whilst the volcano continued to spew its ash and people waited with bated breath to see in what direction the wind blew.

Fast forward to this year’s disaster in the southern hemisphere where recordbreaking temperatures and months of severe drought have fuelled a series of massive bushfires across Australia and burned their way through New South Wales and Victoria.

Bush, forest and parks were decimated and people (including firefighters) lost their lives.

Here we have two situations which have consequences in terms of global warming. Cause or effect? Chicken or egg?

During major explosive eruptions, huge amounts of volcanic gas are injected into the stratosphere and greenhouse gases have the potential to promote global warming. It’s ironic that glaciers act like a protective layer and when the ice melts away from the top of a volcanic mountain, it is then free to erupt.

The Earth’s climate has changed throughout history and in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 11,700 years ago marking the beginning of human civilisation.

The evidence is compelling, the current trend having particular significance because most of it is the result of human activity since the mid-20th century.

There were once six trillion trees on the planet, yet now there are only three trillion, leading not only to a changing climate but a shrinking habitat for wildlife and harder lives for billions of people.

Now, the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) is hoping to restore a trillion trees by 2050, to reverse these trends and create a world where forests are expanding, not shrinking.

It can be depressing to hear that glaciers are melting, seas are rising and many species are on the move, migrating to higher, cooler areas.

The good news is many of us have become informed.

We are travelling responsibly, eating sustainably, reducing our waste, watching what we buy, donating, pledging and volunteering. Our efforts are important.

In the UK, we’re getting more energy than ever from renewable sources. Last year, for the first time since the industrial revolution, more energy was generated from zero-carbon electricity than from fossil fuels. And in summer, we went for more than two weeks without using coal to generate electricity at all – the longest period since 1882.

While there is still much to be done, it just shows what can be achieved.

Who am I? What is my meaning in life?

We spend our lives with labels; wife, husband, mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, teacher, boss, secretary, cleaner, doctor, grandparent.

We are usually asked “what do you do?” rather than “who are you?” Sometimes I feel as though I am being asked to justify myself. How many people ‘big up’ what they do? Domestic cleansing operator (cleaner), domestic goddess (housewife), automotive engineer (car mechanic). Do we think we need to make ourselves sound better than we think the other might actually see us as. Personally, I really value my car mechanic and cleaner – they do a far better job than I ever could!

Where do we place value on ourselves, what makes as significant? Often it is on what we do, the house we live in, the car we drive, the places we go on holiday… but who are you? Are you just a mother/father, cleaner/doctor, Audi driver/cyclist? And why is it so important to us, to society?

When we start to think about ourselves it is often important we add meaning to our sense of who we are. Sometimes this is about defences, we might recognise that we do not feel valued by those around us and therefore we lack the confidence to own who we are, so we relate to what we are instead. It might feel safer to sell ourselves as the best [insert job title here] in Berkshire. We make the most of what we believe our family, friends and/or society values.

first exist and then finding meaning. How and why we find that meaning depends on our life experiences. We need to create that meaning in order to find a way forward, to cope with our existence and to be grounded. I can almost hear some of you arguing with this hypothesis – good! It is giving you something to hold on to, to give you meaning and significance!

But, let me ask again; Who are you? Think about what your values are, your beliefs, hopes, fears, fantasies, what makes you sing out loud, laugh, cry. Is who you are more about these than the THINGS in your life, after all anyone can buy an Audi, but can anyone else sing like you, or believe in the things you do or does anyone else dream of becoming the first person in Berkshire to [insert fantasy here].

I cannot tell you how to have meaning in your life. It is as individual as you and I are. Which in itself is about meaning and meaninglessness, who we are.

Go you! Stop existing and start living as you. Be who you want to be because being you is unique and fantastic and exciting (it might also be a little scary, challenge yourself on this one) – you might still need to be the cleansing operative, the automotive engineer, the counsellor or doctor, but remember that is what you are, not who you are.

We are looking for more people to set up Neighbourhood Watch schemes in West Berkshire.

Which can be anything from 6 houses/ apartments upwards or a whole road and the Co-ordinator will receive free signs and stickers plus details of discounts available to all members in the scheme - currently Jewsons, A-Plan (Thatcham branch), Co-op Insurance, Yale and Newbury Locks. Once a Co-ordinator is registered on the Police/ Neighbourhood Watch database they will receive emails giving information on crimes, scams etc to pass on to their neighbours and with email it is so easy now to forward on as most people have email accounts these days.

By setting up a NHW scheme it does make people aware to report anything suspicious that they see and watch their security plus they find out what crimes are happening in their area. Neighbourhood Watch has proved to be an effective method of reducing crimes such as criminal damage, burglaries, theft from motor vehicles and anti-social behaviour. It is a good way to get to know your neighbours, you can help one another, especially the elderly, and by removing mail, putting lights on and pulling curtains when neighbours are away.

This makes residents feel secure knowing that neighbours are keeping an eye on their property.
