Dear Reader, What a Summer we have had! I think for many of us it was too hot, I can’t believe I am saying this - as usually I am dissatisfied with the lack of sun throughout June-August. It does, however, make yearning for a holiday in the sun questionable – certainly if we are meant to see this as the new normal. When you read this, it will most likely, be in September. As our front cover depicts, it is the start of a new academic year. We wish all our young people challenges, contentment - and good luck as they explore forthcoming opportunities. Please look at our middle pages and perhaps you will know someone who might like to think of attending the evening on 11th October. Additionally, there are more great events which you may like to consider, please see pages 23 and 24. With special thanks, once again, to advertisers – and of course you – our loyal reader. We would not have a magazine without either of you!

Start at the top

• Thermostatic radiator valves should be added in all rooms and in a spare bedroom just turn the radiator off completely and close the door.

Wasted water

Whilematerial.loft insulation isn’t expensive to buy, it is not a pleasant material to handle, and you’ll need skin, eye and breathing protection for the job. Unless you have good access to your attic and don’t mind a weekend’s hard work, calling in a professional is going to be a good decision.

Your heating bill covers your hot water too, so don’t heat water for longer than you need to. If you typically shower in the morning, try only heating it for an hour before you get up and just keep adding fifteen minutes until you get enough to last. In the evening, if you only rinse off a few plates before switching on the dishwasher (which uses cold water), managing with cooler water might be better than heating a full tank.

• Check your water tank has an extra thick jacket and that pipes coming out have lagging.

• Chimneys can be a real heat loss offender, so research what you can do to according to your type of fireplace.

Windows If you have double glazing, ensure it’s performing as it should. If you have any condensation between the panes, it means the air gap has failed and it’s not much better than single glazing. You don’t always have to replace though, as a window repairer can often effect a fix at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows. If you have only single glazing, then you will either need to replace it or go for secondary glazing. The latter isn’t very attractive, although for some listed properties may be the only Regardlessoption of which type of windows you have, install blinds for both a bit of extra heatproofing and daytime privacy, and thick curtains for the evening. Is it worth it? New double glazing will be extremely effective at cutting your bills and will definitely add value to your home. Smaller measures are more affordable though, and still worthwhile.

Please mention Thatcham Connections when responding to advertisements10

If you’ve lived in your house for a while, chances are you already have loft insulation and think it’s good enough. But compared to a new home, even a twenty-year-old property will have room for improvement.

If you want to keep your energy bills low (who doesn’t?) and reduce your carbon emissions, you need to review just how much of your precious heat is escaping.

If you can see the floor joists in the loft or if you’ve managed to install decking straight onto the joists, it means you don’t have sufficient padding underneath. In a new build you can’t even see the joists for insulation, and any loft flooring will be on specially designed ‘legs’ to leave an airgap above the thick

Even little fixes around the home can accrue significant savings and bigger fixes will save more still.

Small improvements

So is a tripod! The best shots are often longer exposures, so they will look shaky unless you secure your camera to a tripod.

By Louise Addison Autumn is the best time of year beautiful sunsets. Have you ever tried to capture one and been disappointed with the result? Sunsets can be devilishly tricky to capture well, but we have a few tips. Choose the time and place – If you’re serious about sunsets make a note of places where they are particularly good then head there before the sunset to give you time to set your camera up. There are websites which tell you what time the sun will set on a particular day. Try www.timeanddate.com/sun/ Foreground is important – The best sunset photos tend to have something of interest in the foreground, generally silhouetted. This provides a focal point. Look for an attractive tree, or a wind farm, and even pylons can look impressive in front of a sunset.

Ignore ‘the rule of thirds’ – The sunset is the star so place your horizon really low down in the shot. This fills the image with colour.

Remember reflections - If you are near water take full advantage of doubling the impact of your sunset. In this instance try placing the horizon at exactly halfway or shoot only the reflections. Experiment and have fun.

Patience is also important – Sunset actually goes on for quite a long time. As the sun dips beneath the horizon it can produce some spectacular shots, but afterwards, the colours of the sky can become even more rich and beautiful, so hang around.

I heard there could be inheritance tax savings as I own a business – is this true? Yes there may be inheritance tax reliefs available but it depends on the nature of your business and the type of assets that you own as a part of the business. It is important to seek advice from a legal professional who can advise you as to how to draft your Will to advise on and maximise any inheritance tax relief your estate could benefit from. How would my death affect my business?

This depends on your business but if you employ staff to run that business, they will be affected as any bank accounts could be frozen upon notification of your passing so it is really important to make sure that you instruct your executors as to how to deal with the business whilst your estate is being administered.

As a business owner, it is vital that you have all your bases covered in your Will when it comes to your business when you have passed away. It can be easy to forget that your business needs as much attention in your Will as your personal life.

Hannah Wallbridge, Senior Associate T: 01635 508147 E: h.wallbridge@gardner-leader.co.uk www.gardner-leader.co.uk

What would happen to my business if I died without a Will? Your estate would be dealt with according to the intestacy rules. This therefore depends on your family tree and who you leave behind to deal with your estate. For instance, if you are unmarried with no children, your estate could pass back up your family tree to your parents or your siblings. This could cause problems if they are not capable of continuing to run the business. There may also be adverse effects on their own personal circumstances.

bUSINESSES IN WILLS

Not only could this cause additional stress for your loved ones but your business could end up in the hands of someone without the experience or knowledge to be able to continue to run it which could have a devastating impact on the future of the business.

19

Do I need to refer to the business specifically in my Will? It depends on who you wish to leave the business to. If you want to leave your business to a specific person, for instance your business partner or a loved one who has a particular interest in running the business, it would be important to include this as a specific legacy to them. If there is no reference to the business, it will fall into your “Residuary Estate”. This is the name for the fund which will hold all your assets you own in your sole name (or jointly as tenants in common) at the time of your death.

I have been meaning to put a Will in place but I don’t know where to start – what should I do first?

We offer a free initial meeting to discuss your circumstances and this can be via telephone, video call or in-person in our offices so we can fit around your schedule. We know it is difficult to fit these types of conversations into your busy day so we want to make this meeting as flexible and accessible as possible. We will talk you through your options and give you peace of mind of having talked it through with a professional who can advise you on the best way to ensure your loved ones are protected and your assets are left to those who would be best to deal with them.

If you have any questions or wish to book an appointment to review your Will, please contact a member of our Inheritance Protection team.

Consumer magazine Which reports that this sinister con is already thought to have parted £50,000 from the pockets of concerned parents across the UK. “ Would it now be a good time to help to set up a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in your area with all the great community spirit there is at the moment? Neighbours will soon get to know one another in their area.

A scheme can be anything from 5 properties upwards and the main role of a Coordinator is to circulate the Alerts on crimes and scams to your neighbours either via email or posting on a WhatsApp or Facebook Group for your area. You will receive free NHW signs, stickers, leaflets and discounts for your neighbours. Please contact me if you would like more information about becoming a Coordinator. If you would like me to send you details of how to set up a scheme, please phone me, Angela Money, the local Neighbourhood Watch Area Coordinator, on 01635 40866 or forward your email address to ajmy5m7@gmail.com and I will make contact with you. All we ask is for you to be the receiver of the Police/NHW/Action Fraud Alerts and then to forward them on to your neighbours. Neighbourhood Watch signs, stickers and leaflets are free. “A local resident was approached by a guy who came to apologise for noise, which would be caused by his pressure hose when cleaning a neighbour’s block paving drive. It turned out this was his sales patter to make an offer to clean his drive - and was concerned that he would be using high pressure water as having used the same technique himself - knew it created lots of dirty slush. He was assured that he used a steam cleaning process but he used water resulting in the anticipated mess. Also agreed a price of £300 and assured him that card payment was acceptable. Result was most unsatisfactory, argument over the agreed price and insistence on cash as he had 'forgotten' to bring the card reader. This printmaking course is divided into three parts. On the first day, you will gather information – using our drawings to make sense of what we see, interpreting the surroundings with various drawing methods, as well as collecting some objects to use on the prints. On the second day, we'll create the plates and seal them ready for printing on the third day. The third day will be all about printing and you'll leave with a selection of single and multi-plate prints inspired by the workshop location.

St Mary's are delighted to welcome back the Tedesca String Quartet who will be performing for the 4th time at St Mary's as part of their current concert season. They will be playing pieces by Mendelssohn, Mozart and Brahms and will be joined for this concert by Rose Redgrave playing viola and Anna Joubert playing cello. Concert proceeds will support St Mary's and Action Through Enterprise in Ghana. Rose Redgrave performs regularly with The Kings Consort, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Musica Saeculorum in Italy, Music Theatre Wales, Scottish Ensemble, Adderbury Ensemble and Psappha. A committed teacher, Rose teaches at Birmingham Conservatoire and has recently given classes, judged the viola prize and been external examiner at the Royal Academy of Music. Anna Joubert studied at Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music with the late Dougie Cummings, then the charismatic Principal Cellist in the London Symphony Orchestra. Anna has a varied and busy freelance career with many orchestras and ensembles, from the English Symphony Orchestra to the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. We look forward to welcoming you.

The enclosure resolution opened the way for the progressive residential development of Wash Common, which continues to this day.

Until the latter part of the 19th century Wash Common was open heathland. In 1858 an enclosure resolution was passed. W Money, author of "A Popular History of Newbury" published in 1905, describes this act in terms of a land grab, "It is scarcely necessary to add that the householders of Newbury received no compensation when thus deprived of the valuable rights and privileges which had been enjoyed by the commonalty of the town for so many centuries, but their inheritance was bestowed on their more favoured neighbours, whose only claim was that they were already possessed, by purchase or otherwise, of land within the boundaries of the borough".

A massive search was set up but was eventually called off and Hercules was presumed dead.

Under a law that came into effect in April 2016, all dogs and puppies must be microchipped and registered by the age of eight weeks. Furthermore, a government press release issued in December 2021 stated that cat microchipping will also be made compulsory in the very near future.

Quite why Kleenex needed a full grown Grizzly for the job is not a matter of record, but at some point during the day’s shoot he seems to have become disillusioned with the idea of his impending stardom and wandered off.

The aim of this legislation is to relieve the pressure on local authorities and animal welfare charities to care for lost animals. Of course, the benefit for you is that microchipping your pet will make it easier for you to be reunited should they be lost or stolen, as your contact details are placed on an approved database. how does microchipping work?

Current legislation means dog wardens and other enforcers, including community support officers, have the right to seize your dog and make sure it is microchipped, and to reclaim the cost from you.

Hercules had been hired to star in a Kleenex commercial which was being filmed on the Scottish Island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides.

A tiny electronic chip is implanted under your pet’s skin, between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique number that correlates with your contact details. If you move home, or rehome your pet with new owners, you must update the details.

Microchipping doesn’t need an anaesthetic as it’s no more painful than a standard vaccination. what if your dog isn’t microchipped?

Please mention Thatcham Connections when responding to advertisements28

If you don’t microchip your dog you risk a fine of £500 (and the same charge when cat microchipping becomes compulsory). You’ll receive a warning notice giving you 21 days in which to comply.

BEAR FACED, by Gemma Brown more than forty years ago on september 13th 1980 hercules the grizzly bear had an eventful day.

Then a crofter spotted the 8’ 4” (2.54m), half tonne animal as he was swimming. A rescue team arrived and shot Hercules with a tranquiliser dart. He was captured in a net and gently transported by helicopter back to his relieved owner and trainer. Following this escapade Hercules was fitted with a radio bleeper...just in case. The gentle giant went on to become a TV star, appearing regularly on children’s TV throughout the 1980’s and he even managed a cameo role in the James Bond film, Octopussy. He also appeared on several Hollywood chat shows and the cover of Time magazine. He died some twenty years later in February 2000, following a fall from which he never fully recovered.

Day pupils benefit from a full boarding education, but with the added benefit of sleeping in their own beds at home. They are fully integrated members of their boarding house, enjoying an extended day, with the flexibility of choosing to start as early as 7.30am for breakfast and staying to enjoy activities once lessons finish. Many of our day pupils take advantage of enrichment opportunities until 8.30pm and, occasionally, beyond! Girls have workspaces, storage and social spaces alongside boarders, and are given the same bespoke pastoral and academic support, including weekly one-to-one tutorials.

Evenings at Downe House offer an outstanding range of opportunities, such as talks by visiting speakers, supervised prep (homework) sessions, clubs and societies, drama, dance and music rehearsals, sports training and the chance to have supper and socialise with friends.

All girls attend Saturday morning school, after which there are sports fixtures; the rest of the weekend is jam-packed with activities and trips which day girls can choose to join in. We take great care to ensure our day girls are fully involved in all aspects of School life and they play an integral part in our thriving global community; inclusivity is at the centre of School life and we are proud that our pupils come from a wide range of backgrounds, nationalities and faiths. Other considerations

If you or your child is starting Year 11 this September, you’re probably starting to think about the next step – college.

Go to as many open days as you can, even for colleges you’ve discounted. Open days don’t just help you to judge a particular college, they help you to compare it against others in your shortlist and may give you more questions to consider.

Past performance Do some research into each of the colleges on your list. How well have they performed over the last few years? What do their Ofsted reports say? Are there any independent reviews on sites such as www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk?

Other considerations How could each college help you to get where you want to be? What links do they have to the industry you want to work in? What are the facilities like for your subject? What kind of wellbeing and career support do they offer?

33

Subjects First and foremost, you need to decide what subjects you want to study, and in what format. Are you looking to do A-levels or a vocational course? Do you fancy doing an apprenticeship? You’ll need to consider which courses are achievable given your predicted grades, and which ones will help you to achieve your career goals. Have a look at all the different options in your local area. You may find that the perfect course is one you’d never even considered.

Ideally, you’ll want to hear from some of the people who would be teaching you, along with the principal and current students. You’ll want to have a good look around at the facilities, classrooms and workshops, and consider how the place makes you feel. Do you think you’d enjoy studying there?

The sixth form experience is often very different from what you’ve experienced so far, so don’t discount it just because you’ve had enough of school. Likewise, don’t choose it just because it feels Remember, comfortable.there’s nothing stopping you from applying to a different school’s sixth form or to a college that’s an extra train stop away. You will need to factor in transport costs and travel time though.

Once you have a good idea of the route you want to take, you can check which colleges offer it.

gardening Matters

While a shrub won’t die if it isn’t pruned, it might grow too large for the space, or become straggly, or produce poor quality flowers. So, gardeners prune in order to enhance a plant’s performance; to encourage it to produce better foliage, flowers, or fruit. Pruning forces a plant into ‘growth mode’ as it tries to replace what it has lost.

Prune in spring Buddleia, perovskia, dogwood, caryopteris, lavender, roses, fuchsias. Prune in autumn Cotinus, forsythia, winter jasmine, philadelphus, spiraea, weigela, deutzia.

ViewGarden

Many autumn-pruned plants benefit from ‘the rule of three.’ My grandfather taught me this and it and means that each year, in the autumn, after the shrub has flowered, you prune out one third of the oldest shoots. This encourages new growth the following spring while still allowing the shrub to flower on the old wood. Treated this way, the shrub will be completely rejuvenated every three years but will flower every year.

Pruning is a word which can instil fear into the heart of a novice gardener.

When should we prune?

There’s no magic or mystery involved: we’re working with the natural inclination of the plant. If the foliage and flowers are produced on new wood, then it makes sense to encourage the plant to produce as much of this as possible. It also makes sense to prune in the spring because any new growth in the autumn would be vulnerable to frost.

Please refer to www.thatchamconnections.co.uk for advert prices and more. 39

Pruning is best approached with a clear purpose. What is your aim? If a reshape is in order and you’re only partially shortening a stem, always prune to an outward facing bud which encourages a nice, open shape. As I’ve already mentioned, pruned plants will do a lot of growing, which means they’ll expend a lot of energy, hence all pruned plants need a good feed in the spring, before the growing season gets underway. Finally, if you do get it completely wrong, don’t panic. Generally, the worst that happens is that the plant looks a bit naff for one season then bounces back the following year. That’s the good thing about plants: they just keep on growing.

There are two main pruning seasons: autumn and spring. Shrubs that flower in the winter, spring and early summer generally produce their flowers on old wood, which is any stem that grew the previous year. These shrubs need to be pruned in the autumn. Shrubs that flower in mid-summer or autumn tend to produce their flowers on this season’s growth, which means on stems that were produced this year. These shrubs should be left until spring before pruning.

I admit I’d never noticed the T shirts prior to my research and I’ve watched the film dozens of times!

The credit for the first printed T shirt in a photograph is attributed to the Air Corps Gunnery School T-shirt featured on the July 13th, 1942 cover of LIFE magazine. Mickey Mouse was the first ‘celebrity’ to be featured a few years later. Marlon Brando played his part in making the T-shirt a seriously cool fashion item when he wore.

It’s thought the first T shirts printed with logos were actually made for the film The Wizard of Oz! They were green T-shirts with ‘oZ’ printed on them in white, and were worn by workers in the emerald city.

One phrase that jumped out at me from Naomi’s manifesto was “press joy into the world”. What a wonderful thing to want to do – but why did it take an artist to show me that what the world might most need at the moment is an influx of joy? It seems so obvious when I say it. But artists have a special training in noticing things – even obvious things –that the rest of us can easily miss: showing us what was there all along and making it meaningful.

• Decorate the space for autumn

• Give away something of yours that someone would like

• Make someone something crafty

• Plan a walk with someone

Revd Mark Bennet, St Mary’s, Thatcham LOV

And you may well have your own ideas – it doesn’t have to be so difficult, after all.

And then I look at the political world around me, and the financial world, and tax cuts and government borrowing and public sector (key worker) pay restraint and interest rate rises and the “cost of living crisis” and the leadership contest in the Conservative Party. And I wonder whether any of them have ever though about what it would take to press joy into the world – that a better world would be a more joyful place? I wonder whether too many of us have almost given up on being joyful, or even thinking about joy. And yet if life is to be worth living, surely joy has to be a part of it.

One of the things I like most is that Naomi does not say “force” joy into the world. There is no sense of telling people they must be joyful. “Press” joy into the world for me means making it difficult to avoid, but not forcing it on anyone. If we are not such good artists, what might we be able to do?

Come Christmas, one of my favourite carols is “Joy to the world …”. How did I ever make it all so difficult, and forget it the rest of the year? Be inspired, as I have been, to press a little joy into the world before Christmas comes round again.

I have been thinking about manifestos recently, not so much because of the current political situation, but rather because a young artist I know produced a rather different kind of manifesto. her purpose was to set out what she was trying to achieve in her art and in particular in her work of illustration.

• Give the gift of your presence, enjoying traditions with others

On the whole joy comes from outside ourselves –the joy of nature, or joy brought to us by a friend or neighbour – we can’t make joy so very easily for ourselves. So if we are making joy, it will be for other people – it is something we share. Perhaps it is important at the moment to offer joyful possibilities to people living on their own.

e Matters Please mention Thatcham Connections when responding to advertisements45

And where does joy come from? Naomi can use her skill as an artist, and there is certainly a great deal of joy in her work. Can we bring joy into the world, without being artists? Well I think we all have that ability, though some of us lack practice.

• Put together a picnic for somebody

Here are some of Naomi’s suggestions:

Press Joy IntoThe World

If you’ve never worked out before and your fitness levels are low aim to achieve 50 to 70 percent of your maximum predicted heart rate. For highly trained athletes, the goal is to hit 90 percent. So, a relatively unfit 40-year-old should aim for 90-126 BPM.

You do need to take your fitness level into account.

A heart-rate monitor, which notifies you when you reach your maximum predicted heart rate, is useful. To calculate this number during your own workouts, simply subtract your age from 220; so, for a 40-yearold, that would be 180 BPM (beats per minute).

This doesn’t apply if you are taking part in HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts, because for these you’ll spike your heart rate to high levels during your working intervals for very short periods, then allow it to partially drop while you’re resting between sets. Continue to pay attention to your heart rate after your work out is finished. Watch how long it takes for your heart rate to return to baseline after completing aerobic exercise. It should drop by about 20 beats within the first minute of stopping exercise. As you become fitter though and exercise at peak heart rate for longer, it may take longer for your heart rate to return to normal.

If your goal is to improve your cardiovascular fitness aim to stay between 60 and 70 percent of your maximum predicted heart rate. To improve endurance, aim to hit 70 to 90 percent.

IMPORTANT: If you have any medical condition you should check with your gp before starting a new exercise regime.

The best-known option is a cashback credit card. This will give you a percentage of your spending back as money, usually sent to your bank account. You may get a fixed percentage on all spending, a percentage that depends how much you spend, or a varying percentage that depends exactly what you are spending on. Watch for any monthly fees and be sure these won’t wipe out the benefits.

For example, earlier this year anyone using the option to convert Sainsbury’s Nectar card points to Avios air miles effectively boosted their cashback by 25 per cent – though of course, that’s only worthwhile for people who planned to spend their air miles. Remember also that how much financial benefit you get from air miles can vary depending on the type of flight you book.

The key rule for using such cards is that you should only use them for purchases that you would have made anyway: don’t buy stuff just to boost your cashback.

Inflation continues to rise, and with it the gap between your outgoings and income shrinks. You can’t completely stop spending, but you can earn cash back when you spend. There’s a range of ways to do this, but you need to check the conditions carefully.

Bank accounts

Another option is to get a bank account that offers some form of cashback, often called a reward account.

The newest option is to use specialist apps and online sites. These aren’t operated by banks or credit card providers, but rather by independent businesses. In principle, all you need to do is visit the site or app before being passed on to the retailer and you’ll then earn a percentage of any spending as cashback.

Please mention Thatcham Connections when responding to advertisements52

There’s often a small monthly fee, but if you are paying regular bills you can usually come out

Finally, don’t forget about supermarket loyalty cards. They don’t pay cash but do offer discounts on future shops. These days, the best value often comes from taking advantage of tieups with other retailers and programs, though this does mean doing some research and keeping up to date with the latest policies.

Loyalty cards

The interest rates on cashback credit cards are often quite high, so make sure you pay the balance off in full every month, preferably by direct debit. And don’t get cash advances such as bank machine withdrawals as, again, the rates can be high.

ahead. Check the conditions carefully though: some rewards accounts have a minimum amount that you must pay in each month.

However, make sure you check prices carefully and see if you could get it cheaper elsewhere, outweighing the rewards. Be particularly wary of any membership costs. Often such services are free or have a free tier, but they can have monthly fees that may come as a surprise and reduce the overall benefit.

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.””

Slipping out of Summer

Edith Sitwell By Maxine Hoskins MA, MBACP (Accred)

“It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!”

Winnie The Pooh (via A.A. Milne)

I often hear people talk about “winter blues” and SAD (seasonal affective disorder). SAD is a form of depression impacted by changes in the weather and seasons. Commonly it is thought of as a winter condition but can be from winter into summer as well. Typically, symptoms are as with any many forms of depression: A lack of energy, withdrawing socially and from loved ones, feeling sad, ‘down’, anxious, angry (to name a few). SAD can affect sleep patterns, sleeping too much in the winter and not enough in the summer. This is caused by a change in our melatonin levels and a reduction in serotonin, from a lack of sunlight, also creates sleep disruption along with changes in appetite and mood. Then there’s our internal body clock which gets disrupted by the changes in sunlight in the winter. Basically, less sunlight tells the body it needs to rest, when we can’t and we have to get up, we discover our “get up and go has got up and gone” and this can increase those depressive feelings.

As I write this at the beginning of August, we’ve had the hottest day on record and the driest July since 1935. I am optimist for rain and some actual sunshine rather than the muggy, overcast weather I am currently looking at. You’re reading this as we head into autumn and I don’t know what the last few weeks have been like for us all but I do know that heading into the autumn and winter can really affect our mood.

And remember, there is so much to look forward to in the coming months too. There’s changes in nature; the rich, golden autumnal colours in the trees, the sparkle of the first frost, perhaps even a smattering of snow –which I think makes everything look clean and fresh. There’s hot chocolate (perhaps laced with something), warming pies, casseroles and squidgy puddings to look forward to.

So, what do we do about it? Firstly, if you feel you are struggling to function day to day then a trip to the GP is probably the best cause of action. Getting a diagnosis may well help in recognising that this is something serious to consider. You can then look at some therapy as well as do something for yourself.

There’s Chinese Moon festival, Newbury’s Real Ale festival, Diwali, Dusshera, the autumnal equinox, Halloween, bonfire night and many, many more things to get in your diary to make sure you’ve something to look forward to, to tempt your ‘get up and go’ into action!

Get outside and exercise! Grab as much sunlight and daylight as you can - a brisk walk at lunchtime will help. Sit by the window during the day, keep your house / office as light as possible with as much fresh air as you can manage and eat well. It sounds simple and it can be, but as I said, if you’re really struggling to adapt to the change in season, you can also get some professional help. Some people find light boxes helpful (please check out whether this would be suitable for you first) and massage can increase levels of serotonin.

The first settlers in America planted lots of apple trees simply so they could continue to make cider to drink. Originally, they crushed the apples in a trough, until a genius named John Worlidge produced the first apple-mill in 1676. In the 1800s The Temperance movement killed off the cider industry. Fired up by speeches from ministers and politicians, many farmers destroyed their ‘demon orchards,’ sparing only the trees used for sweet non-alcoholic juice. During the Prohibition years, American cider production fell by 76%.

Today the best English cider is cask-conditioned; dry and fruity, with low carbonation. Normandy cider is sweeter and more effervescent with a complex flavour. Both drinks are perfect chilled, served on a warm summer evening, with friends.

The AppleBig by Sarah Davey a brief history of cider Cider is a popular and delicious summer drink, but have you ever wondered who first thought about turning apples into alcohol? Apple trees have been cultivated since around the 5th century AD and cider, or something similar, seems to have been around for almost as long, although sometimes it was known as ‘apple wine.’

It was brought to Britain by the Normans in around 1100 AD and was originally a drink for the poor. Ale was made from malted barley and using grain for alcohol could mean going without bread, so cider provided a good alternative. People drank it instead of water because sanitation was so poor, and water was often not safe to drink. It is believed that children were even baptised using cider because the water was so risky!
