Dear Reader, I do hope life for you is going well - or as well as expected.

Such a lot has happened over the last few months and Ukraine has been constantly in our thoughts. Most of us feel horrified at what the country is going through. If you are hosting a refugee, I would love to hear from you - as I think it would be good to link up with other people in the area who are in the same position.

On the bright side, now that Covid has abated somewhat, it is really good to be able to tell you of some events you might like to attend in June. Please see pages 24 and 25. The Thatcham Fun Day will, I am sure, be one of the best and definitely not to be missed.

Summer Wine Which tipple to choose for summer

By Helena Campbell The summer months require a different approach to wine. we’re more likely to want something refreshing, or to mix it with soda water for a spritzer. Also, even staunch red winelovers often drift towards a white or a rose as the temperatures rise.

Look for a dry white with high acidity, a light to medium body. If you favour sweetness try to make sure it also has high acidity. Look for fruity notes, particularly apple and citrus, and stay away from full-bodied chardonnays.

Try Riesling, pinot grigio, and Sauvignon Blanc. A more unusual option is Albariño, a beautiful refreshing Spanish wine.

Either work nicely for a summer day, and sparkling rosés are particularly pretty and festive for summer celebrations. Try Grenache rosé served cold for a perfect crisp blend of tannins and acidity. Sangiovese rosé is slightly sweeter and fruiter and perfect for warm summer evenings.

Some folks just love their reds even in summer.

However, avoid heavy, full-bodied varieties unless you want to feel sleepy and dehydrated.

Look for lighter reds that are best served chilled, with low tannin and high acidity. Cinsault is probably my favourite summer red on account of its fruitiness. It’s nicely high in acidity too.

Frappato is also a good summer choice with low tannins and a fresh taste. Lambrusco can be sneered at in some circles but it’s actually the perfect bubbly sweeter red for summer.

Make the Most of the Web Get to grips with going online and futureproof your business

How do you make yourself visible on the web?

writer’. You need short, targeted, punchy articles.

Think of your usual customers. What sorts of questions do they ask you? What confuses them?

Who has used your products in the past and had a great experience? Why would you recommend one product over another? The answers are all short articles that people want to read, and that search engines love to see. 450- 600 words (a similar length to this article) are all you need. Add a couple of photos, maybe a short video and you’ve nailed it.

You wouldn’t hide your physical business away and not tell anyone about it would you? If someone wandered into your shop by accident you wouldn’t ignore them, cross your fingers and hope they buy. Your website should work in the same way as your physical business. Information is the most powerful way to draw customers in and help them decide to click the buy button.

Second you need to get the information on to your website, which should be under your control.

You’ll need your login details and a little bit of training so ask your website designer for these.

If you can’t currently edit your own website, check with your designer to see if this important feature can be added. If not, you’ll need to discuss with them about how to update the site.

Search engine algorithms love information. It tells them what your website is about, which means that they know how relevant you are when someone searches for a certain word or phrase.

Finally, you need to repeat this process at least once a fortnight, more if you can manage it.

It looks as though normal service won’t resume for some weeks or months. Moving more of our business online makes sense.

Other websites love information too. Advice, tutorials and case studies provide them with great content for their own visitors. Other websites that quote you and link to you are basically voting for you and your website as experts in your field, and experts go to the top of the search results.

Customers love information. Why should a customer buy from you and not from your competitor a click away? Sometimes it’s down to price, but more often it boils down to trust and confidence. The more you help and inform your customers, guide them through the possible choices and point them towards the best solution, the more likely they will choose you. If you then provide great service and support, they’ll become a loyal customer.

You may hear about keyword research and ‘optimisation’, but don’t worry about this right now. 90% of the benefit comes from the content itself. If you write good articles, you’ll naturally use the right keywords. And honestly… a better use of your time is creating new content rather than chasing the last 10% on the existing stuff!

So ‘get’ writing!

Why tyre pressure is important

By Toni Carlton As I pulled into the garage to check my tyre pressures like I do most Fridays after collecting my son from school, he asked, ‘Why do you have to check the pressures anyway?’

I knew it was for safety reasons though I was a bit hazy on the details, and frankly I do it because it’s a habit I inherited from my own mother. So, let’s take a look at tyre pressures.

Here’s an interesting fact - 40% of car accidents related to faults (as opposed to driver error) are related to under inflated tyres! Though I reckon you could class that as driver error too because they omitted to check the pressure. Under-inflated are the most common reason for a blowout, where a tyre disintegrates while in motion. They are super scary and extremely dangerous.

Correctly inflated tyres last longer than those that are under-inflated. Tyres can lose 1-2 PSI (pounds per square inch) per month if unchecked,

and driving on tyres underinflated by just 5 PSI can reduce the life of the tyre by 25%.

If you are concerned about the environment, or your finances, check your pressures. Under-inflated tyres can increase your fuel consumption by around 5%.

Tyres inflated to the correct pressure actually improve vehicle grip, handling, and steering. Underinflated tyres increase stopping distances by up to eight metres, and even more if the road is wet or icy.

The car might also feel sluggish and hard to control.

Overinflated tyres are more likely to overheat on long journeys, increasing the risk of a tyre blowout.

They also make handling more difficult, especially on corners. Because they are ‘harder’ contact with the road is reduced meaning that the engine has to work harder and increasing petrol consumption.

The correct tyre pressures for your car can be found in the handbook or printed on the inside of the fuel tank flap, or the sill of the driver’s door.

The cost of living is increasing in the UK, and a car, for many people, is a crucial way of getting around.

So, how can you run it as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible?

We’ve got some tips to help.

Shop around for insurance Motor insurance is a significant outlay and while it’s tempting to automatically renew once your policy comes to an end, this could add hundreds of pounds to the cost.

So shop around. Use online comparison sites to find the best prices, though calling providers directly can be worthwhile too.

Give an accurate mileage figure Insurance policies require you to estimate how many miles you’ll be travelling in your car. Overestimating your mileage can ramp up your policy cost, so be as accurate as possible to help reduce cost.

Pay for your insurance in full If you’re able to pay for your insurance policy in full rather than monthly then you’ll avoid paying interest on your policy.

Of course, if spreading your insurance policy over twelve months avoids financial pressure elsewhere, then this option is still valid and ensures you’re covered.

The same applies to vehicle excise duty (road tax). Though you can split it into smaller monthly payments, you’ll save money by paying it in full for a twelve month period.

Keep your car well-maintained Servicing your car regularly helps ensure that it’s running as efficiently as possible, while technicians can check to see if there are any issues that could cause future problems.

Regular servicing brings down dayto-day costs through better fuel economy and lower oil use.

Avoid premium fuels To keep costs down it’s better to opt for regular fuel, and although premium fuels are required by many sports and performance vehicles, regular petrol and diesel cars will run perfectly well on ‘standard’ fuel.

Look around for the cheapest fuel Make a note of your cheapest local station, but don’t be tempted to drive out of your way for cheaper fuel, as this is more expensive in the long run. If possible, avoid expensive motorway fuel.

Check your tyres Tyres have a big impact on fuel usage and today’s ‘eco’ tyre options offer a lower rolling resistance that help improve your car’s fuel economy. There’s no loss of grip or reduction in safety with these tyres, either.

Keep your tyres at the right pressure If your tyres are in good condition, however, then stick with them. Make sure they’re inflated to the correct pressures as this can have a real impact on fuel usage.

An under-inflated tyre causes your car to use more fuel, so top them up regularly. The manufacturer’s recommended pressures will be in a panel behind the fuel filler flap, in the door shuts or in the vehicle’s handbook.

Remove unwanted items Extra weight in your car uses up fuel, so take out coats, boxes and bags that you don’t need.

Also, remove roof racks or top boxes that aren’t being used, as they have a huge impact on fuel economy.

Summer Loving

In praise of the romantic comedy For me, watching a romcom is a lot like eating a whole tub of Ben and Jerry’s. You know you shouldn’t; you’ll probably feel slightly queasy afterwards, but it feels so good in the moment.

They are perfect summer watching.

You do have to accept the limitations; it’s no good looking for clever subtext or the meaning of life here, and you have to be ok with cliché…actually you have to fully embrace it because cliché is the lifeblood of the rom-com.

For example, most characters in rom-coms work in advertising or journalism in a big city.

Occasionally a doctor or a vet is allowed to be a main character, but the chances are at least one of the leads is trying to make a deadline or win a contract. There’s the ‘will they, won’t they?’ part of the storyline, and even though we know they inevitably will, it’s important when they meet for the first time, that there’s friction, or preferably intense dislike between the leads. Usually, this revolves around a car accident, or a situation where one of them acts uncharacteristically like a jerk. There is an unwritten rule that if one of the characters is a doctor or a vet they will inevitably be a ‘country’ doctor, or a ‘country’ vet and the big city journalist or advertising executive will learn salutary life lessons from their sweet, super sensible country ways...

and there’s generally a community fete or barn dance where the chemistry begins.

There are always ditsy / drunk / geeky / obnoxious / sensible-but-plain / seriously hot-but slightly dim / totally dysfunctional-but-loveable <delete as applicable according to the plot> best friends or family members. These characters are there for their comedic value and they are always endearing, even the obnoxious ones.

Then there is a PROBLEM (capital letters intentional) for the couple to overcome. One of them isn’t who they say they are, or there’s a misunderstanding where one thinks the other is married / involved in fraud / a murderer. Basically, the relationship is ALWAYS entered into under false pretences by one or both parties in a rom-com.

These false pretences may be real or entirely imagined but they will always cause a PROBLEM, usually exacerbated by a well-meaning and aforementioned best friend or family member.

Finally, there is a chase as one of the leads, driven to rash action by the PROBLEM, rushes off to take a new job in another country.

Usually, the chase scene ends with a kiss in the rain...or a fountain...or a river.

For some reason water features large in rom-com resolution scenes. Oh... and the guy nearly always apologises even if the woman was in the wrong.

Because rom-com rules dictate this... possibly because women are the target audience.

I know ALL this, and I still love rom-coms.

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION OF TRUSTS

1 SEPTEMBER 2022 With the 1 September deadline looming, trustees of trusts which were not previously required to register with HM Revenue & Customs should be gearing up to comply with the new registration requirements. The new rules have arisen as a result of antimoney laundering regulations.

Until now, most trusts that had no UK tax liability were not required to register, but this is changing.

Which types of trusts are required to register?

All UK express trusts must register by 1 September 2022, even if they have no tax liability, unless they come within one of the excluded categories. An express trust means one which was created intentionally by a settlor during their lifetime, or in a Will.

Examples of non-express trusts are those imposed by law such as the intestacy rules (when a person dies without making a Will); ‘resulting’ trusts which revert trust assets to the settlor when an express trust fails; or ‘constructive’ trusts which are imposed by law where it is unconscionable for a person holding an asset to deny the beneficial interest of another person. These non-express trusts are not required to register unless they have a tax liability.

Some non-resident trusts are also now required to register, for example where they hold land or property in the UK, or have a UK resident trustee.

Trustees of jointly owned assets are required to register only if the beneficial owners and the trustees are not exactly the same people (although this does not apply to a bare trust of land where a maximum of 4 trustees can be registered on the title). This could catch out some situations where for example a beneficial owner has died and another person has inherited their interest in the asset, without becoming a trustee. In that situation, the trust must register.

Which types of trusts are excluded?

• Trusts created by a person’s Will that are terminated within 2 years of the date of death • UK charitable trusts • Some insurance policy trusts receiving benefits after the death of the person assured (but only if the benefits are paid out of the trust within 2 years) • Some life or retirement policies paying out on death, terminal or critical illness or permanent disablement, or to meet healthcare costs • UK registered pension schemes • ‘Pilot’ trusts set up before 6 October 2020 holding no more than £100 • Co-ownership trust set up to hold shares of property or other assets which are jointly owned by 2 or more people for themselves as ‘tenants in common’ • Some types of commercial trusts created in the course of professional services or business transactions

I am a trustee - what should I do?

If you are the trustee of a trust which now needs to register, you should do so before the 1 September deadline. The registration process requires you to input personal details identifying the settlor, the trustees and the beneficiaries, as well as details of the trust and its assets. You will need to create a Government Gateway account through the gov. uk website. This all takes time, so we advise you to start the process as soon as possible.

If you are not sure whether you now need to register, talk to the team at Gardner Leader. Trusts which should have registered by 1 September 2022 may be charged a penalty if they are late.

What's on in the community Thursday 2nd – Sunday 5th June Thatcham Historical Society and The Old Bluecoat School are hosting a Jubilee Exhibition at The Old Bluecoat School from 2nd to 5th June.

The event will help promote the history of Thatcham and the history of the Old Bluecoat School, as well as celebrate the Queen’s remarkable achievement.

The exhibition will include a timeline and photos of the Queen’s reign, world events and events in Thatcham during that time.

Thatcham Town Council are also creating Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Legacy Project. The vision is to work with the people of Thatcham to develop a large visual commemoration of Her Majesty’s reign, to display in the Town. The intent is to create 45 scenes in a variety of mixed media, and this will be displayed in the town as a record of the major events in Her Majesty’s life since becoming Monarch.

The project can include Embroidery, Weaving, Applique, Cross stitch, Patchwork, Photography, Painting, Marquetry, Mosaic, Felting, Beading, Crochet and others that might be suggested. The deeply faithful William Byrd was, at some peril, a practising Roman Catholic and wrote a collection of music for the Catholic liturgical year. Vaughan Williams, in contrast, held atheist views earlier in his life, moving towards agnosticism as he aged, but still found it in himself to write what has been called the first Mass to be written in a distinctly English voice since Byrd.

What can counselling help with?

What happens in a counselling session?

You might seek counselling to cope with a recent or historic traumatic event, such as: • Bereavement • Abuse • Divorce • Diagnosis of a significant health condition

Counsellors differ in their approaches and techniques.

Most will ask questions to help you explore any underlying issues that may be causing difficulties.

You’ll be able to talk about how you feel and about anything that’s bothering you, in a safe, confidential, non-judgemental environment. Generally, a counsellor won’t tell you what you should do, and will instead aim to guide you towards making your own decisions.

Other people use counselling to overcome or manage a specific challenge or mental health issue, such as: • An eating disorder • Phobias • Anxiety • Depression • Lack of confidence • A pattern of unhealthy relationships

Along with counselling, there are also other types of talking therapies. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), for example, can help you to change how you think about situations and break unhealthy patterns.

Couples and families can also go for counselling together to help resolve underlying tensions and improve relationships.

However, you don’t need a specific reason to go for counselling, as psychotherapist Jamie Styler explains: “Having a safe, confidential environment to explore your inner self with someone who is trained to guide and listen can create the space to develop a better understanding of oneself. This in turn can contribute to a more peaceful and fulfilling life. I stand by the belief that everyone can gain positive benefits from counselling.”

How do I find a counsellor?

In most cases, your first port of call should be your GP, who can talk to you about the different types of talking therapies available and recommend which one might be best for you. They can then make a referral if they feel you’ll benefit from therapy. Alternatively, you can self-refer. Find out more at www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/mental-health-services.

There is often a long waiting list for counselling on the NHS. If you decide to go private, you’ll want to choose a counsellor who’s registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. There’s a directory of registered counsellors at www.bacp.co.uk. In some cases, you may need a therapist who specialises in a specific area, such as eating disorders or PTSD. You’ll also have to decide whether you’d prefer to speak to a counsellor online, over the phone or face-to-face.

How much does counselling cost?

Fees vary greatly, depending on the counsellor’s qualifications and expertise. Some counsellors offer a discounted rate for people who are on a low income. It’s also worth checking whether you can get counselling paid for through your health insurance, employee wellbeing programme or the NHS.

LOVE Matters

Let us Rejoice and Remember

With the Jubilee this year I have been thinking back over the royal Jubilees I have encountered during my lifetime. The first I remember was the silver Jubilee of 1977. I was still at school, and there hadn’t quite been a national celebration I remember before that. Times were not wholly easy, with inflation higher than today’s worst fears, and unemployment was a reality for many. I can’t remember the details of what happened, but I seem to remember there were parties and it was a bit of fun and I remember the Jubilee coverage of Blue Peter.

And of course the most immediate memory is of ten years ago, with the diamond Jubilee and the Olympics in a very different age, but somehow capturing a sense of community and a real celebration of the Queens’ life of service.

This Platinum Jubilee – the first of its kind in our nation’s history, let’s not forget – finds a very different context, with our Queen now in her 90s and not so publicly visible as she has been in earlier times. We also find ourselves in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic and the vastly different ways that has affected each of us – just as the 1970s were serious so it seems that the 2020s may be serious too – and many of us may find our spirits lifted by a bit of a party.

The passing of time reminds me also of the passing of a generation – my own father died last year, and such things affect all of us. Queen Elizabeth has been a leader and an example all these years of her reign, but she is only one of a whole generation who experienced wartime and rationing and for whom the building of community and a life of service were fundamental to their lives: a generation who built the foundations of the life we have today.

It seems to me that this is an occasion to honour their (your?) service and community

building too, and to honour it not with pious words and memorials, but by learning from the history of those times how to meet the formidable challenges of the present.

Much of the responsibility of making sense of the world we live in has passed now to a younger generation, whose life experiences have been very different: we have been living through the most rapid period of change in human history.

This Jubilee, it seems to me, is a chance for us to look back, with the Queen as an anchor for our thoughts, just in case the power and pace of change and the sheer overwhelming volume of social media, have distracted us from lessons and values which may still be important.

So as we honour the Queen’s reign, let us truly rejoice and remember, and in rejoicing and remembering we may yet find our own inspiration to meet the challenges we find before us this Jubilee year.

Lovely bunnies

Rabbits are really lovely as a first pet and children particularly appreciate them, but don’t imagine them to be the easy option. They can be as costly and time-consuming to care for as a dog or cat.

Here are a few things to consider: • Your rabbit doesn’t need to be taken out for a walk, of course, but it will need exercise and a hutch on its own isn’t big enough. You’ll need to buy a run of around 2.5m by 1.5m to allow your rabbit the exercise it needs.

• Vets’ fees for regular check-ups can add up and aren’t covered by insurance.

Vaccinations against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease will be needed.

• Neutering is recommended by vets, and again, is not covered by pet insurance.

Bringing a rabbit inside the house means that you’ll need to supervise it carefully to make sure it doesn’t chew through cables and wires. Rabbits also require daily grooming, especially long-haired breeds, as hair balls can block the animal’s stomach.

The leopard Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. Its fur is marked with rosettes.

It is similar in appearance to the jaguar but has a smaller, lighter physique, and its rosettes are generally smaller, more densely packed and without central spots.

Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.

The leopard is distinguished by its wellcamouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, strength, and its ability to adapt to a variety of habitats ranging from rain forest to steppe, including arid and montane areas. It can run at speeds of up to 58 km/h (36 mph).

The earliest known leopard fossils evacuated in Europe are estimated 600,000 years old, dating to the late Early Pleistocene. Leopard fossils were also found in Japan and Sumatra.

Our feet are our first point of contact with the world, and yet too often we cram them into ill-fitting shoes and leave them until last when it comes to self-care. From athlete’s foot to ingrown toenails, there are a variety of issues that can crop up as a result of poor foot care. So, what can you do to – literally – put your best foot forward, and how can you resolve any issues should they arise?

treated. Over-the-counter fungal creams are the best solution, but it’s also important to keep your feet clean and dry in-between treatments.

Prevention is better than cure, so the best place to start is with your choice of shoe. A good pair of shoes should support and protect your feet, and allow natural movement when walking. Look for breathable fabrics, roomy toe-boxes, cushioned soles and low heels.

Although wearing high heels once in a while won’t do much harm, long-term use has been linked to ingrown toenails and even arthritis.

Although chiropody becomes more important as we age, taking good care of our feet also gets harder as we lose flexibility. If you’re experiencing any aches, pains or symptoms in your feet, visit your local chiropodist who will be able to help diagnose any issues and advise next steps.

Some foot ailments can be slightly more bothersome, however. Ledderhose disease is a rare condition that causes connective tissue to build up and create hard lumps on the soles of the feet. The growths aren’t cancerous but they can cause pain, especially when walking. Home remedies include wearing soft shoe inserts, stretching, massages and antiinflammatory drugs, but doctors might also recommend surgery in more serious cases.

Once you’re wearing the right shoes, keeping your feet in good condition should be fairly straightforward. Applying a moisturiser or foot cream daily will help prevent cracking, and using a pumice stone or foot file will tackle any hard skin that often appears around the heels.

It’s also important to check your feet regularly for cuts, sores, redness or swelling – especially if you’re diabetic. This is because raised blood sugar levels can often lead to a reduction in blood supply to your feet, which means that cuts and sores may take a while to heal.

When it comes to foot care, toenail trimming is key. The trick here is little and often. Experts recommend trimming your nails every six to eight weeks, cutting them straight across using clean, sharp clippers. The best time is when you’re just out of the bath, but be careful not to cut them too short. Ingrown toenails are often the result of overtrimming, and besides being extremely painful, in extreme cases, may need an operation to resolve.

Athlete’s foot is another common foot problem, caused by walking barefoot in communal spaces such as gyms, showers or swimming pools.

This fungal infection usually starts between the toes, causes significant discomfort, itching and pain, and can even spread beyond the feet if not

MONEY Matters

Many investors want a simple way to put their money into shares of multiple companies, usually to mitigate the risk of one performing badly, but of course in the hope of making a healthy gain on their capital.

ACTIVE FUNDS

The first big divide is between active and passive funds. An active fund usually involves a fund manager who takes money from clients and uses it to buy and sell shares. In effect they aim to use their judgement to pick winners, avoid losers, and outperform the market as a whole.

They are usually paid a management fee calculated as a percentage of the investment. Naturally performance varies and it can be difficult to compare investment funds based on past performance.

It’s possible the fund or its manager either had a lucky streak or has carefully selected the period for which they are boasting of their performance.

PASSIVE FUNDS

A passive fund, sometimes called a tracker fund, doesn’t try to pick the best shares.

Instead it will either buy shares from all the companies in a particular stock market or buy a representative sample. Either way, the aim is that the overall performance will very closely mirror that of an entire market or a stock market index (such as the FTSE 100).

The passive approach is unlikely to bring the spectacularly high returns that come from picking

the most successful firms. At the same time, it’s less likely to lead to dramatic losses from picking shares in companies that slump or even go out of business. It’s more of a slow and steady approach, particularly if you have the time to ride out short-term swings in the market as a whole.

UNIT TRUSTS

The way you put your money into investment funds and what you are technically buying also varies. Perhaps the best known is the unit trust, where multiple investors pool their money for the fund manager to invest. The fund owns a collection of shares and then each investor owns a unit of the entire fund. When you come to sell your unit, the money you get back depends on the overall value of the shares the fund owns.

OEIC

Another option is the open-ended investment company (OEIC). This is a fund that operates as a business and has its own shares. Rather than own a unit of the fund, you technically buy and sell shares in the company itself in the same way as you would with a normal publicly traded business. However, you’ll normally have to pay a fee (to cover the fund management) when you buy shares in an oEIc and you may have to pay an exit fee when you sell shares.

TAX

However you invest, always seek professional advice when investing to make sure you comply with tax laws and take advantage of available allowances and tax-free schemes such as stocks and shares ISAs.

Savvy spenders know to use comparison sites for many personal finance and related services, but making the most of such sites isn’t always easy. Here are some top tips for getting the best deal while saving time.

INSURANCE

Insurance is arguably the king of the comparison site, thanks to years of memorable ad campaigns.

Getting comparisons makes sense for most forms of insurance, whether you’re a first-time customer or your policy is coming up for renewal.

It doesn’t just save time going to individual sites, but reduces the need to keep typing in the same details about the cover you require.

Counter-intuitively, it can make sense to try multiple comparison sites rather than just one.

Both the policies and prices on offer can differ slightly across different comparison tools, so a little extra time could get you a better deal. The good news is that once you’ve run a search on a site, it will usually store your details and send you a reminder next year, letting you run a new search without having to type everything in again.

It’s also worth checking insurers that make a point of not being available through comparison sites, most notably Direct Line, as they may have better deals.

If you’ve got even more time to spare, check out cashback sites. You’ll need to check terms and conditions carefully, and be certain what you are signing up for, but they can work out to be a better option when you crunch the numbers.

Occasionally you may get a cashback bonus that makes it a better option than going for a cheaper base price through a standard comparison site.

Sadly, gas and electricity supply is no longer an area where price comparison tools have much purpose.

At the time of writing, the cost of wholesale gas (which also affects electricity production costs) is so high that suppliers have little incentive to offer deals cheaper than the government-imposed price cap.

Without a crystal ball it’s impossible to predict future price movements, but it’s hard to see any supplier offering a sustainable fixed-price deal that’s below the price cap any time soon.

BROADBAND, TV, MOBILES

One area where people may overlook comparison tools is broadband, television and mobile phone services (particularly for those who own a handset outright). If you get your internet through a phone line rather than a cable network such as Virgin, you should be able to switch supplier with virtually no disruption, so even a small saving can be worthwhile.

MORTGAGES

Mortgages may seem like an obvious area for comparison sites, but they usually aren’t a perfect option. That’s because whether a particular provider will offer a loan, and on what terms, will vary significantly between individual customers. It’s certainly worth checking out a couple of price comparisons, but think of them more as a rough guide to whether buying a property in your desired price range is affordable rather than a way to choose a deal.

We’ve recently heard about something called ‘Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor’ and we’re wondering what it means and if it could be an option for us. Can you give me some information about how it works?”

Of course! With the Bank of Mum and Dad remaining one of the UK’s largest lenders, and many first-time buyers still struggling to access the housing market, it’s unsurprising that many parents (and grandparents) are looking for ways in which to help their children or grandchildren fly the nest.

The most obvious of those ways is, of course, gifting a deposit, but it’s not the only one. Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor is another avenue to explore – here’s some information that we hope you will find helpful.

What is a Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor Mortgage?

A Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor mortgage (sometimes known as a JBSP mortgage) allows two or more people to buy a property together, but with only one person taking ownership of that property. This is the key

difference from a joint mortgage, where all of the property purchasers are also the owners.

THE HIGH-TECH WAY TO MOW YOUR LAWN Every year we ask the same question: are robot lawnmowers affordable yet? And every year the answer gets a bit better. at the time of writing, the extremely impressive Flymo EasyLife 500 GO has dropped from £649 to £550, which is a lot for a lawn mower but not a lot of money for one that’ll do the mowing for you.

The Flymo is not the cheapest one around: the Yard Force Compact 400Ri is currently £385. It has a 20V battery and a 16cm cutting width, and it’s designed for lawns of up to 400 square metres. The Flymo can handle slightly bigger lawns of up to 500 square metres, but while there’s also an 800-squaremetre model, it’s £300 more expensive.

The big benefit here is convenience, of course, but that convenience does cost you: there are lots of cordless human-controlled mowers for less than £200, with more premium models such as Bosch’s EasyRotak 36-550 coming in at £350 to £400. Those mowers tend to have

much bigger cutting widths and more height adjustment, and they can handle bigger batteries too: the 36V battery in the Bosch delivers more power and better battery life than the smaller blocks in robot mowers.

Cordless strimmers are cheaper still: wellknown brands such as Black and Decker and Bosch come in at under £100, while some less famous brands come in at under £50 for similarly specified strimmers. It’s worth taking the battery system into account here, so, for example, the batteries that go into a Bosch or Black and Decker strimmer are interchangeable with the firms’ cordless power tools, including other garden tools.

That means one battery can be used across multiple products, which can be bought in battery-free versions to save you money.

The big downside to any cordless tools is that sooner or later the batteries run out.

You can address that by having an extra charged battery handy, or you could go for a corded device instead. Bosch’s Rotak 32R is a solid option for smaller gardens at £89, while its Easygrasscut strimmer is just £32.

Garden View

Trellis Trellis is underutilised in most gardens, yet it has a myriad of uses. It can cover an ugly wall or screen an ugly garden building, and it can be used on one or more sides of a patio to provide privacy. You can use it as a framework to support plants but can also be a decorative feature in its own right.

Strategically placed trellis can make a garden appear more interesting. Counterintuitively it can also provide the illusion of greater space by interrupting the line of sight and making people curious so drawing them out into the garden to explore.

Most garden centres have a good range of functional and attractive trellis, readymade into units. If you can’t find exactly what you are looking for there are companies who will precision cut a specific design and size for you.

Obviously, you will pay more for the privilege, but you will get exactly what you want. In a small space where you might only need one piece it can be a worthwhile investment, because in a small garden any structure is more noticeable and becomes a visual statement.

If you plan to grow plants up your trellis then make sure the posts or wall that it is fixed to will support the weight of the trellis plus the full-grown plant.

It can be tempting to plant a variety of climbers, but a small space often benefits from bold planting using fewer varieties.

Beware of using all deciduous plants because the structure will look bare in the winter.

Vines such as Vitis coignetiae, which has large heart-shaped leaves and beautiful autumn colour are great for a large area. V. vinifera ‘Purpurea’ has very attractive leaves which as the name suggests are purple. It produces bunches of dark, tightly clustered grapes.

Clematis are a good choice. C. montana is vigorous and might swamp a small trellis, but if you have the space they can be grown through other climbers and produce a fabulous summer display.

Ivies are good for winter colour. Don’t think that all ivies are dark green. H. Helix ‘Goldheart’ has super attractive yellow leaves edged in bright green while H. helix ‘Chester’ has leaves with wide cream margins and is good for brightening up a gloomy area.

Passion flowers look very exotic and are a particularly good choice for a trellis. Scented climbing roses are one of my favourite plants to grow up trellis which is screening a patio.

I love ‘Compassion’, which has the most beautiful blooms in pink / apricot, and a strong, sweet fragrance. Prune every winter.

Remember to check trellis every year for broken or rotten supports and treat periodically with wood preservative to prolong its life and freshen its appearance.

Newbury Racecourse

The racecourse held its first race meeting on 26/27 September 1905 at its current location, in the Greenham area on the south-east side of Newbury, West Berkshire.

The first recorded racing at Newbury took place in 1805 with “Newbury Races”, an annual two-day race meeting at Enborne Heath. The meeting lasted until 1811 when it transferred to Woodhay Heath until 1815.

Newbury Racecourse didn’t come into existence for another 90 years when Kingsclere trainer, John Porter proposed a new racecourse at Newbury. The Jockey Club had laid down strict qualifications for new racecourses and after Porter’s plans were rejected several times, a chance meeting with King Edward VII brought about a further application which with the King’s support was approved by the Jockey Club.

with Copper King ridden by Charlie Trigg and trained by Charles Marnes winning the opening race, the Whatcombe Handicap. Marnes was presented with a Silver Cup (value £25) and Trigg received a gold mounted whip (value £10).

It was fitting that John Porter trained Zelis to win the Regulation Plate on 27 September, providing the only winner at Newbury for course’s founder as he retired from training at the end of the 1905 season.

National Hunt racing followed shortly after Flat racing and in 1906, nine days racing were planned for Newbury in 1906 – six on the Flat and three over Jumps. A members badge which also covered the two days in 1905 was priced at 7 guineas.

During the First World War Newbury Racecourse was used as a prisoner-ofwar camp for German prisoners.

In April 1904 the Newbury Racecourse Company was formed and purchased the land and then construction began of the buildings and stables at a cost of £57,240.

In September 2020 it was reported that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Newbury Racecourse had experienced a 68% loss of turnover for the first 6 months of 2020.

On 26 and 27 September 1905 the first ever racemeeting took place at Newbury Racecourse

In January 2021 a COVID-19 vaccination centre was established at Newbury Racecourse.

MIND Matters

Are you beach body ready ?

No? Me neither apparently.

As we head into summer we are often bombarded through television advertising, social media and even flyers through our letter boxes, by the diet companies, gyms, beauty parlours and personal trainers suggesting we should all, by now, be ‘beach ready’ implying that there is standard that should be achieved if we are to bare our bodies on the beach.

All too frequently the image is unrealistic for most of us. The almost sunken stomach, the six pack, the toned and already bronzed arms and legs… How are we possibly able to achieve this? and, more to the point, why? Who is it that says this is the ‘right’ way to look.

There is an increase in shame and anxiety for many who feel the pressure to conform to these stereotypical demands for the ‘perfect beach body’ and, as a result, body dysmorphia is worryingly on the increase as social media and advertising imprint the expectation on to young people (and the rest of us too). The expectation of a particular look or body size / shape which can lead excessive dieting and exercise and even to some people undergoing surgeries to change an aspect of their face or body and all in the name of fitting in and not feel the shame of not looking a certain way, a way dictated by a company who have no idea what suits our particular natural body shape, height, life style etc.

These expectations can, for some, lead to Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD). A serious mental health condition where the sufferer excessively worries about perceived imperfections in their appearance, imperfections that others do not see. BDD is not about vanity, wishing you were slimmer, more toned, taller or had a smaller nose. It is more damaging than that and often leads to social anxiety and depression as the sufferer believes their appearance is so totally unacceptable to other. Having BDD leads to day-to-day suffering and to excessive ways to

‘correct’ their perceived image (dieting, exercise, surgery - as mentioned above). BDD suffers sometimes become addicted to viewing social media which increases their suffering as they see their image to be so ‘abnormal’ to those portrayed. These images portrayed are unrealistic. So many people enhance their appearances on social media and in advertising with filters, recolouring and even apps to change face shape, eye colour; I could go on.

I am so encouraged to see more advertising creeping in that advocates differences, whether it is a curvy body, ‘imperfect’ skin colouring, disability or a more natural face - one that hasn’t been photoshopped, excessively made up or remodelled.

Companies are realising that they need to be more diverse, both ethically and morally. Using more unique models who create more inclusivity and debunk the ‘perfect’ face / body image – no one is that perfect.

Our bodies should be celebrated for their differences, I have my hang-ups like many people do, but I remind myself that this is me – my curves, my skin tone, my weird knees. My hope for you is that you can be more accepting of yourself as you are and if you feel you need to change anything then do it for yourself, not for anyone else because, and please try to believe me here, they probably don’t notice.

If they do and they are critical then that says a lot more about them then about you, they have been hooked into the hype, the unrealistic belief that there is a “perfect” beach body.

If you have your sun-cream, towel, bucket and spade packed then you are beach ready!

Relax and enjoy.

NB: ‘Beach Body Ready’ was an advertising campaign in 2015 for protein weight loss supplements which was (thankfully) quickly banned.
