A big welcome to this Spring issue. I do hope you will find it of some interest and fun.

I do hope you are all well and that those of you - like me - who hate the cold snaps have been able to keep cosy, most of the time. As I write this it is perishingly cold and our wish for Spring seems unheard.

Easter is only a few weeks away and I do hope you can then have some good time to relax with the family. Also on May 6th, the Coronation of King Charles and Camilla. This will be a wonderful day for all of us too!

A Modern Monarch: King Charles 111 (8) Dear Readers,
All best wishes,

Gentleness can be Strong

It is sometimes very hard to notice the good things around us.

Somehow springtime always seems to be the season of hope, and the emerging shoots and early flowers show us that life is possible even if times have recently been rather dark and cold. Good things make their presence felt amongst us as part of the natural order of the year. Springtime reminds us that there is a season for healing, restoration and renewal.

I have been finding it rather hard to notice the good things around me these last years – though I have tried. My thoughts recently have been a bit about how much is broken, and in that I include myself. Reflecting with some local headteachers this morning it was obvious that schools are still affected by the aftermath of the pandemic – and not only because of the opportunities pupils have missed, but also because we adults have got out of the habits we used to have. I attend a lot of meetings, and none of them are quite the same as they used to be – the rhythm has changed, and behaviour is not quite the same.

And thinking about visiting people in their homes, and listening to the stories people tell – somehow these things took a break, and they aren’t quite the same as they once were. And I am thinking that perhaps hope is a good start, but somehow we need to do rather more than assuming that everything is as it once was. I know I have changed: apart from anything else I am a few years older, and I have not quite got back into the patterns of life I had before. As we look forward with hope we perhaps still need to attend to ourselves – as my mother reminded me only last week the glories of summer are possible only if we protect tender shoots from a late frost.

Hope and colour and the shoots of spring somehow live on the surface of life, while some of the wounds of the recent past require deeper healing. In the church the fruits of the Spirit include gentleness, and gentleness is one of the gifts of a true healer. If you engage at all with public social media, you will find gentleness (and indeed the other fruit of the Spirit, like self-control) in rather short supply on the whole. If we are to recover well from the pandemic and survive the increased cost of living we will do

well to find those gentle, hopeful places where the shoots of new growth and new life are protected. Amidst a chaotic world at war, I wonder what values you would most cherish? Something robust, surely? – Fortitude and courage and the like, which so often seem beyond us. In St Mary’s Church, Thatcham we have a memorial to Alexander Buller Turner, a soldier who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his courage in battle in the First World War. Those who remembered him with love, in the midst of their grief in those chaotic times of a world at war, inscribed at the bottom of their memorial seven of the nine fruits of the Spirit – the enduring values which nurtured his exemplary courage and fortitude and sustained their memory of a beloved son, brother, friend and comrade. It is a reminder to me, every time I see it, that gentleness can be strong, and in this Springtime of 2023 it is a quality to seek out and to cherish.

When the coronation of King Charles III takes place on 6th May at Westminster Abbey, the ceremony – which will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury – will be rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry. However, it will also reflect the monarch’s role today, and look to the future. Then and now

The Queen’s coronation on 2nd June 1953 was one of the greatest events of the twentieth century. More than 8,000 guests filled the abbey to witness the crowning of the young mother, while crowds lined the route that took her and the Duke of Edinburgh to and from the abbey. Millions more were lucky enough to watch the event on the still novel phenomenon of television, this being the first time the event had been televised.

It has been speculated that King Charles will have a toned-down affair with reduced costs, with suggestions of it lasting just one hour and with around 2,000 dignitaries in attendance.

Break with tradition

The date of 6th May was reportedly chosen in consultation with the government, the Church of England and the Royal Household. However, the date does have some symbolic references to family members:

• Firstly, the coronation of George VI, the King’s grandfather, was in May.

• 6th May is also the birthday of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the King’s grandson, who will be turning four on the day.

• It’s also the same date as the late Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, was married in 1960. During the ceremony the King will be anointed with holy oil, receive the orb, coronation ring and sceptre, and be blessed and then consecrated by the Archbishop. Monarchs traditionally sit in the fourteenth-century King Edward’s Chair, and Charles will be crowned with the St Edward’s crown, becoming the fortieth British monarch crowned at the Abbey since William the Conqueror in 1066.

Camilla, Queen Consort, will also be anointed and crowned, as was the Queen Mother when George VI was crowned in 1937. Man and boy

Charles will be 74 at the time of the ceremony, the oldest ever new monarch. In 1953 the then-Prince Charles was just four years old when his mother was crowned.

As with royal ceremonies, there had been behind-the-scenes preparation and practices in the lead up to the big day. Charles’ boyhood memories include how, the night before, the Queen came to say goodnight wearing the St Edward’s Crown as she was trying to get used to its 5lb weight. He also recalled being kept awake by the “thousands of people gathered in The Mall outside Buckingham Palace chanting: ‘We want the Queen’”.

Royal author Robert Jobson says: “Charles has adapted to his new role very well and is out connecting with people, which sadly the late Queen wasn’t able to do towards the end of her life.”

DEL BOY CLARIFIES THE LAW

FOR THOSE FAMILIAR WITH THE COMEDY SERIES “ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES”, IT MAY CAUSE AMUSEMENT TO HEAR THAT ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS, DEL BOY, WHO OFTEN LIVED ON THE EDGE OF THE LAW, HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN CLARIFYING A LEGAL PRINCIPLE.

In a High Court case, the claimant, who owned the rights to the Only Fools and Horses TV comedy, brought a claim against the Defendants, who had launched an interactive dining show featuring characters from Only Fools and Horses. Among many issues considered in the case was whether copyright could subsist in a character from a dramatic or literary work (in this case, the main character, Del Boy). As the Judge commented: ”There is surprisingly little discussion in English case law or commentary on [this issue]”

The Judge considered the scripts of the Only Fools and Horses episodes to establish whether the character of Del Boy (as opposed to the name itself) could attract copyright protection. He formulated a two-stage test – the originality requirement and the identifiability requirement.

The Judge considered the author’s development of the character of Del Boy, describing him as “aspirational but… also shown struggling to get by in a gritty multicultural London context of clubs, pubs and tower blocks”. He noted his use of “mangled French, showed “a desire on his part to appear suave and sophisticated while at the same time providing comic effect because the phrases were used incorrectly.”

On the first stage of the text, he concluded that Del Boy represents a highly distinctive and original character.

As regards identifiability, the Judge had little difficulty in concluding that “the features of Del Boy relied upon by the claimants as constituting his character are… precisely and objectively discernable in the scripts.”

As such the character of Del Boy was protected under copyright law.

As regards the case overall, the claimants won hands down regarding copyright infringement and passing off (the latter being that the dining show gave the false impression of being connected to Only Fools and Horses, with a likelihood of damage to the owners of the rights).

AND SO TO SLEEP...

Night-time routines to help you get some rest.

Switch off screens

It’s all too tempting to scroll through Instagram in bed, but try to resist. The blue light emitted from screens can interrupt your natural sleep-wake rhythm. Even if your phone has a night-time filter, screentime can still make it harder to relax and fall asleep. Try downloading an app that blocks social media and other distractions at night.

Cleanse the day away

We tend to see makeup removal as a chore, but it doesn’t have to be. Cleansing is an act of self-care and can help to release stress and tension. Look for a balm that can be massaged into your skin and easily removed with a damp muslin cloth. Bad Habit’s Omzzz Acai Nightly Cleansing Balm (£18, uk.morphe.com) is a good choice as it boosts moisture levels and has a calming lavender fragrance. For an extra soothing treat, try a heated face mask. Sensory Retreats Divine Glow Self-Heating Face Masks cost £15 for three from www.sensoryretreats.com.

And breathe…

People have been using the power of aromatherapy for centuries. Add a few drops of essential oil to an electric diffuser half an hour before you want to sleep. You could make your own blend of calming aromatherapy oils, or just pick up a readymade one.

Alexandra Kay’s Time to Sleep Pure

Essential Oil Blend (£20, www. greenpeople.co.uk) features seven sleep-inducing essential oils, including lavender, bergamot and frankincense. Together, they work to calm your senses and prepare you for sleep. (Plus, the blend smells divine).

Block out the light

Use a night cream

Night creams tend to be richer than day moisturisers. They often contain ingredients best used at night (such as retinol) and are designed to boost skin cell renewal. For best results, look for one that’s targeted at your age or skin type. No7, for example, offers three different formulations – Protect & Perfect Night Cream for women aged 35-45, Lift & Luminate (45-60) and Restore & Renew (60+). As an added bonus, each one now contains Boots’ Pre-Sleep Fragrance, which smells gorgeous and is designed to promote a better night’s sleep. They’re available from £24.95 at www.boots.com.

While children might need a nightlight, adults usually sleep much better in the dark. Darkness sends your body a signal that it’s time to rest and it increases your melatonin levels. If you need to sleep during the day, try using a sleep mask. The Tiffy & Tallulah Sleep Mask (£9, www. tiffyantallulah.com) is made from vegan-silk. Not only does it block out the light, it also feels really comforting. Plus, it helps your skin to stay hydrated.

Relax

Does your mind keep racing while you’re trying to sleep? Try guided meditation: www. calm.com and www.thecalmsleep.com are a good place to start if you’re new to meditation. Or, if you struggle to meditate, try www. brain.fm, which offers music specifically designed to help your mind relax into sleep.

FREE taster session with the Thatcham Rock Choir

Thatcham Baptist Church, Wheelers Green Way, Thatcham, Berkshire RG19 4YF

Start time: 8:00pm

Are you looking to join a choir?

Your local Thatcham choir is run by choir leader Chloe Payne. A local community choir first and foremost, we are also part of the national Rock Choir network, which provides some unequalled performances for choir members. Members of Rock Choir have had the chance to meet and sing in front of many celebrities and public figures, including Will Smith, Paul O’Grady and Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellows at the UK’s top venues including the O2!

If you find yourself racing through the week with no time for yourself, or struggling to meet new people in Berkshire, then joining your local branch of Rock Choir could be just the thing for you. With our unique, no-pressure approach to teaching and fun, uplifting arrangements of your favorite hit songs Chloe will guide you through your weekly dose of music, fun and laughter.

Here is a quote about our choir - ‘I joined Rock Choir after being made redundant and being out of work for a year, so was feeling fairly low. Immediately I was greeted like an old friend and made to feel welcome. Since then I have gone on to meet new friends, have a great time every week and culminating to doing a solo at a local festival. If you’d have said to me a year ago I’d have the confidence to not only sing in front of people, but do a solo, I’d have told you not to be so silly.

Rock Choir has become a v important part of my life, for the better.’ - Alex (Rock Choir member)

Delightful Dahlias

With just a little knowhow, they are easy to grow and care for. When choosing Dahlias consider the size and type of flower head you want, as well as the height of the plant.

Dwarf varieties are great for patio pots, but there are also varieties tall enough be used as a centrepiece in a border. They are planted as tubers right about now. Look for strong, healthy tubers and check the labels carefully to make sure they are suitable for your climate and soil type. They should be planted after the last frost, in a well-drained, fertile soil in full sun. By well-drained I mean soil which allows water to percolate through it reasonably quickly and not pool. If your soil is too heavy, or alternatively too free draining (so nutrients wash away), the best remedy is to dig in lots of organic matter such as compost, well-rotted farm manure, or shredded leaves This will condition the soil so it maintains the right amounts of water and air for better plant growth and increased biological activity.

Dig a hole about 10-15cm deep and position the tuber, with the eye (the little dip) facing upward, then cover with soil. Water well and mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Dahlias are quite thirsty plants so require regular watering, especially during dry spells, and they should be fed every two weeks with a high-potash fertilizer. Pinch out the growing tips to encourage bushier growth and more flowers. Stake tall varieties to prevent them from falling over in windy weather. This sounds needy but they will repay this attention handsomely with their glorious blooms. Deadhead by removing the faded blooms regularly to encourage even more flowers. Cut the stem back to just above the next pair of leaves. Unfortunately, Dahlias are not frost-hardy, so it's important to lift the tubers in the fall before the first frost and store them in a cool, dry place. Leave the stems and foliage to die back, then carefully lift the tubers, brushing off any soil, and let them dry out for a few days. Store them in a frost-free place, such as a shed or garage, until the spring when you can plant them out again.you are after a dwarf plant try ‘Figaro’ which is a dwarf “landscape” dahlia with semidouble flowers in shades of red, pink, orange, yellow, and white. It works well as bedding and in containers, and blooms from planting time until the first frosts.

“I don’t know how to act my age, I’ve never been this old before”

I first wrote in Thatcham Connections in 2018. FIVE years ago! Blimey, where did that time go?

I seem to be saying that a lot recently. I’m not sure if it’s an age thing or a post CoVid thing; it seems to me that time is currently measured by pre-CoVid, CoVid and post-CoVid markers. CoVid seems to have wiped out nearly two years. During that time, I think a lot of us thought about re-evaluating life to some degree; our individual views on life and loss, what is important to us, new fitness regimes etc. but at the end of it all how many of us just picked up where we left off; business as usual.

But let’s go back to it possibly being an age thing. There are two certainties in life; death and taxes. Freud believed we had both a life drive, a need for survival and procreation and a death drive, a path towards destruction and aggression. We are literally born to die – cheery, I know – and along that path we must age. No matter what time in our life death catches up with us, we will have aged.

There are numerous birthday cards with humourous quips around ageing “Growing old happens, Growing up is optional” and (**) above. Society and advertisers encourage us to somehow be younger than we are; anti-ageing creams and potions, hair dyes, de-tox diets and Pilates are just a few of the tricks we might try in an effort to turn back the clock. It sometimes sounds exhausting and I, for one, don’t have time to try to stay young. Anyway, who decides how old you are when you are no longer ‘young’.

An older relative and I were talking the other day about how old we felt inside (taking away any of the physical impacts of aging) and interestingly we both decided “about 32”. A time when we both felt we were old enough to know better with some wisdom and learnt lessons. But young enough to test that theory, still have some fun and take some risks, even if it came with more sound effects – the odd groan and crack of joints!

There are obviously physical and psychological impacts to ageing. Our cognitive reactions and physical abilities mean that we slow down. Our biology changes: hormone levels drop,

in both women and men, which can impact our physical and mental wellbeing. Some people become more reckless, buying a fast car or going skydiving (there’s that Freudian death drive) and ‘growing old disgracefully’. There is nothing we can do about the age we are, but we can make sure we live our best life. “It’s not about how old you are, it’s about how you are old” (Jules Renard)". We can make sure we eat well and exercise to keep our hearts pumping, we can keep hydrated to keep our skin supple and plump and we can keep our minds sharp(er) by using them. Doing crosswords, memory puzzles and reading keeps the grey matter working and social interactions are vital in providing us with mental stimulation. Doing something increases a sense of self, especially after children have grown and left home or post retirement when there might be a feeling that we have no purpose or worth, that we are no longer needed or noticed. Volunteer, join a club or sign up for an evening class (life drawing anyone?… just a suggestion).

Then again, why wait till the kids have left home or you retire?

“Ageing is just another word for living” (Cindy Joseph).

Even 15 minutes of First Aid Training is enough to give you knowledge that could save someone’s life in an emergency. For your nearest First Aid Course, visit: www.redcross.org.uk.

This classic bake with a berry twist is the perfect finishing touch when the family gather for a celebratory Easter feast – or just when it’s time for tea!

Serves 10

Preparation time 30 minutes

Cooking time 1½ hours

Ingredients

• 500g ready-made marzipan

• 150g raspberries, plus 11 for the top (about 50g)

• 200g self-raising flour, plus 1 tbsp

• 175g butter

• 175g caster sugar

• 3 medium eggs plus an egg yolk, beaten

• 50g ground almonds

• 150g sultanas

• 1 egg white, lightly beaten to loosen

Method

1. Line a 20cm loose-bottomed baking tin with parchment. Roll out a third of the marzipan to a 20cm circle – you can use the base of the tin to cut round. Wrap the remainder and any offcuts and set aside.

2. Preheat the oven to 170°C / fan 150°C / gas mark 3.

3. Toss the 150g raspberries in the extra 1 tbsp of flour and set aside. Beat together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy, then gradually whisk in the eggs and the extra yolk. If the mixture begins to curdle add 1 tbsp of flour and mix in. Sift the flour over the mix and fold in gently until smooth. Fold in the ground almonds, sultanas and floured raspberries.

4. Scrape half the cake mixture into the tin and carefully lay the marzipan round on top. Add the remaining mixture, level the top and bake in the preheated oven for around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes until golden and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes and then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

5. Roll out half the remaining marzipan to a circle and sit it on top of the cooled cake. Shape 11 balls from the leftover amount and arrange in a circle on top.

6. Preheat the grill to medium. Brush the cake all over with the egg white and then place under the grill or use a cook’s blow torch to brown gently. Remove from the grill, leave to cool and then decorate with the fresh raspberries.

7. The cake keeps well in airtight container for up to 5 days without the extra berries on top. Alternatively, freeze the cake before adding the marzipan top for up to a month.

Angela Money BEM

Our West Berkshire Neighbourhood Watch Area Co-ordinator - writes:

“If you do not currently have a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your road, we would really appreciate your help by setting one up. A scheme can be anything from 5 properties upwards and the main role of a Coordinator is to circulate the Alerts on crimes and scams to your neighbours either via email or posting on a WhatsApp or Facebook Group for your area. You will receive free NHW signs, stickers, leaflets and discounts for your neighbours. Please contact me if you would like more information about becoming a Coordinator.

"You can now also report a crime, road traffic incident, lost/stolen/found items or vehicles and a missing person via the Thames Valley Police website: www.thamesvalley.police.uk. After you send your report you will receive confirmation that it has been received by Thames Valley Police. They will contact you to explain how they are going to deal with your enquiry and aim to do this as soon as possible. All personal details sent using this service will be kept safe and are used for policing purposes only.

"The latest crime statistics for any area can be found by visiting (www.police.uk) This website provides you with helpful information about crime and policing in your area. Enter your postcode, town, village or street into the search box, and get instant access to street-level crime maps and data, as well as details of the Neighbourhood team and ‘Have Your Say’ events.”

Angela can be contacted via e-mail: ajmy5m7@inbox.com or by phoning 01635 40866 / 07774 962641.
