The Consumer Rights Act - How it affects your business There’s little escaping the recent publicity around the new Consumer Rights Act 2015 which brought better rights for consumers on faulty goods.

But whilst this is great news for shoppers how does this affect businesses?

right to reject If a product or service is faulty then the consumer now has an initial right to reject the goods and claim a full refund within 30 days of delivery. The buyer can also chose whether to have the item repaired or replaced instead however, if this is not possible then the trader can refuse and then the consumer has a right to a refund or to keep the product at a reduced price. A refund or reduction also applies if a repair or replacement doesn’t work as overall, the trader only has one chance to rectify the situation and this has to be done within a reasonable time.

If the consumer has had the product for more than six months since delivery (one month, if it is a car), then the trader can deduct part of the price based on the amount of use of the product.

With services, the consumer can require the service to be performed again, within a reasonable time, without significant inconvenience and at the trader’s expense or can ask for a reduction in the price. There is no formula for calculating the reduction, but it can be up to 100%.

digital content This is the first time paidfor digital content has been properly addressed in consumer legislation and must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.

If not, a consumer has the right for it to be replaced or repaired (although there is no limit of the amount of times it can be repaired) or seek a reduction in the price (of up to 100% in appropriate cases).

The consumer can also obtain a repair or compensation for any damage done to

any digital device that the content was uploaded on.

unfair terms A new expanded “grey list” of potentially unfair terms in contracts has also been produced. Terms included on notices to consumers (rather than within written terms) and any price information, including extra charges, have to be prominent. So ensure that any written terms or notices are reviewed and updated, customer service policies or practices are compliant and that all staff are trained on the new rules.

As one of the most popular small pets in the UK, hamsters take pride of place in many homes. They can make a great first pet for children, although they do not tolerate rough handling, so you need to make sure that younger ones treat them gently. dwarf vs golden hamsters Not many people know that you can buy dwarf hamsters as an alternative to the more commonly known Syrian, or golden hamster. Syrian

hamsters live for 2-3 years on average, and are very solitary in nature. They should be kept on their own in a cage, as they display a strong tendency to fight with other hamsters.

PETS

Dwarf hamsters grow to approximately 8cm in length.

They look extremely cute, but beware if they escape their cage – they can be very difficult to catch! This type of hamster is not as solitary as its golden counterpart, but even so it is advisable to check with the breeder or pet shop whether two or more hamsters would mix.

Caring for your hamster Hamsters are usually bought

between the ages of four and eight weeks. Care will involve cleaning their cage, providing the correct type of food, as well as making sure they are entertained when you are asleep.

Hamsters love to climb and run around, and these activities are essential for their health.

They’ll need a large cage with a wheel and other toys such as cardboard tubes. REcIPE

Cake and Bake

Stollen This spiced and fruity Continental sweet bread is perfect for serving over the festive season with a glass of warm mulled wine.

Ingredients: • 50g butter • 175ml milk • 3 tbsp caster sugar • 375g strong plain white flour, plus extra for kneading • � tsp salt • 1 tsp ground mixed spice • 2 tsp fast-action dried yeast • Zest of 1 lemon • 1 large egg, beaten • 125g raisins • 25g chopped mixed peel • 50g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and quartered • 175g marzipan • Melted butter, for brushing • Icing sugar, for dusting

Makes 10-12 slices Ready in about 3 hours 26

1. Put the butter, milk and caster sugar in a small pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Leave to cool for 10 minutes.

2. Sift the flour, salt and mixed spice into a large bowl and stir in the dried yeast. Make a well in the centre and stir in the milk mixture, lemon zest and egg. Mix together with a round-bladed knife to form a soft and sticky dough.

3. Turn the dough onto a well floured surface and knead for 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. At first the dough will be quite sticky so add more flour as necessary.

4. Flatten out the dough and knead in the raisins, cherries and peel until just combined. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for about 1� hours, or until doubled in size.

5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes, then roll out to a 25cm square. Shape the marzipan into a sausage shape and place down the centre of the dough. Fold one side over to cover the marzipan then repeat with the other side, overlapping in the centre. Seal the ends. Place seam-side down on a greased baking sheet. Cover with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas 5.

6. Bake the stollen for 35-45 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Brush the hot stollen all over with melted butter and roll in the icing sugar to coat. Leave to cool.

So to avoid a huge bill in January and get the New Year off to a good start, try one or two of these ideas and generate some extra cash. use cashback sites when buying your presents If you like to shop online at Christmas, you might be surprised by just how much cash you can get back when using sites such as Quidco and TopCashBack. There’s no charge to sign up, and depending on the item purchased you can get between 3% and 10% of your money back. generate extra cash on eBay and amazon Not only will you declutter and make space for the next influx of presents, selling items online can generate some much-needed extra money at this time of year.

There are hundreds of eBay categories, and once you get into a routine of photographing and describing your items, it’s possible to significantly boost your Christmas budget.

Amazon is great for selling books, CDs and DVDs that

you no longer want, but they also offer hundreds of different item categories within their marketplace. If you have a lot of books to sell it can be quicker to list them on Amazon rather than eBay, as all you need to do is input the ISBN or title. The site then searches for the book and automatically adds postage, so all you need to do is write a short description. use the popularity of local facebook pages Many people use Facebook to sell goods locally. It works like a classified ad – you list your item and local people come round to view it before purchasing with cash. The local online groups are run by volunteers, and the listing is free-of-charge which saves you money in comparison with eBay and Amazon.

Become a mystery shopper If you’ve got time to spare, this can be a lucrative sideline and offers a great deal of variety.

Depending on the mystery shopping company, you could be carrying out a covert visit to a store, ordering a sandwich in Subway or checking out the service in your local bank.

You’ll need to fill in a report online following each visit, and photograph or scan your receipts as proof that you’ve

The Nursery School was purpose built in 1992 and designed with Montessori principles in mind. Accident? You Mean Collision Iain Betson learns there are no accidents on Britain’s roads.

Speaking to a Highways Agency officer the other day, I was intrigued to learn that the emergency services now do not class “incidents” on the road as “accidents”, but as “collisions”. Previously, they would have attended a “Road Traffic Accident” (RTA). Now they attend a “Road Traffic Collision” or RTC. Why the subtle change in wording? Well, the use of the word “accident” implies something that was unexpected, unforeseen or that “just happened”. And calling these incidents as such has been used as a defence in a court of law.

“Yes your honour. I know I was clocked by the speed camera doing 60mph in a 30mph zone.

It is true I was pulled by the fire crew from my wrecked car that was part of the multiple pileup outside the primary school at going home time. And I know my car was subsequently found to have four bald tyres, no insurance and dodgy brakes. But the whole event was classed as a traffic accident, so you can see I couldn’t have foreseen any of it happening.

So, therefore, I am innocent of all charges.”

Accident or incident. Collision or coming together. You say tomaytoe and I say tomato.

It may be interpretation but, ultimately, the results are the same. If we all took a little more consideration and, dare I say, care in our driving, then I think it’s likely the number of “collisions” our already stretched emergency services have to attend would be reduced.

Growing Fruit Trees

Who doesn’t enjoy sinking their teeth into a delicious, flavour-packed, superbly juicy apple or pear? Mmm! But if you want the ultimate in gorgeous apples, pears, plums or more, then the fruit needs to be freshly picked and sun-warmed - so grow your own and you can also save yourself a few bob, have fun and make some good looking additions to your garden, even when space is limited. There’s no need to have a massive plot or an orchard to grow fruit trees…

You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, especially if you don’t grow them in a classic tree shape, but train them. Training them into espaliers (so that they have several sets of horizontal ‘arms’), cordons (as single main stems grown at an angle) or fans (with branches trained into a fan shape) means that you can grow many varieties of apples and pears up against a suitable vertical surface such as a wall, fence or set of sturdy wires.

You could also train fruits like apples as ‘step-overs’ - this just means trained so they make a neat edging for a bed or border, about 45cm or so above ground level. A stepover apple basically goes up to a height of about 30cm and is then trained so that it forms two horizontal ‘arms’. They look great when in flower and will even bear a smallish crop of fruit along the arms. Try step-overs around the edge of your vegetable plot or flower bed.

Alternatively, why not make a real feature of fruit and use a tree to create a decorative and, later on, a productive arch? Buy an inexpensive bare-root cordon (straight stem) or a ‘whip’ fruit tree of your favourite variety, pair it with another variety that is a suitable pollinator (check with the nursery) and plant one on each side of the arch, training them in as they grow. It will look great, phenomenally pretty when covered in blossom in spring, and after a few years will bear tasty fruit too.

But what if you don’t have any open ground, beds or borders in your backyard style garden? Provided you get the right rootstock (see below) it is quite possible to grow fruit trees in large containers. The container needs to be as big as possible - a half-barrel at least - and must have drainage holes kept clear using a few inches of broken china or ‘crocks’ at its bottom.

Good quality loam-based compost such as John Innes No.3 will work well, but help to keep it well aerated and free-draining by adding 2550% multi-purpose loam-free compost.

Whatever the size of your garden, but especially if space is short, when you are choosing fruit trees it is essential to get them on the right ‘rootstock’, as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree.

The rootstock is the type of roots onto which the chosen variety of apple has been grafted. Apples are particularly complicated and a good nursery will advise you, but

as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing but somewhat tricky M27 - but do beware weak varieties or any tree grown on this rootstock in poor soil or not well pampered may well fail. For bush, cordon, espaliers and halfstandard try the easier to look after dwarfing rootstock M26, while for a cordon, an espalier on poor soil, arches and bush trees try the semi-dwarfing MM106.

You can either buy one year old ‘maidens’ or ‘whips’ which are small, fairly straight stems and train them yourself, or if you want to save time you can often buy trained or parttrained fruit trees. Obviously you’ll pay more for a trained

tree, but it can save you several years work!

Cold Ash Brass Band Cold Ash Brass was founded in 2003 by a group of local musicians who enjoyed playing music together.

We have gone from strength to strength and are now alongside performing in local concerts we take part in the Southern Counties Amateur Bands Association annual contests as well as entering the regional heats for the National Brass Band competition.

In September this year we were fortunate enough to compete in the National Brass Band competition finals at Cheltenham Racecourse.

In 2009 we formed a Youth Band to encourage youngsters to play together and last year we expanded and renamed this as Cold Ash Brass Community Band. It is our aim that the community band should encourage players of all ages and

abilities to join together and have fun playing music whilst learning from each other.

We are currently trying to expand the membership of our community band so if you are a brass player, or you have one hidden in the loft that you

used to play and are thinking of taking it up again, or you play percussion then we invite you to come and join us.

Remembrance Parade & Armistice Day Thatcham Town Council and the Thatcham Branch of the Royal British Legion work with local organisations including the Royal School of Military Survey at Denison Barracks, Hermitage, to mark the traditional Remembrance Sunday with a full parade through the town and services at the War Memorial and at the parish church.

A few days later a smaller yet equally important ceremony will be held shortly before 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month to mark the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of WW1.

Sunday 8th November - Remembrance Parade Starting at 10.30am from the Kingsland Centre, passing along The Moors, Station Road, The Broadway, High Street and London Road to the War Memorial for a service. The parade then continues to St Mary’s Church via Green Lane and Church Gate.

Wednesday 11th November – Armistice Day At 10.50am, gather at the War Memorial for a short service before retiring to the Council Chamber for refreshments.

Friday 4th December - Christmas Lights Celebration The Christmas celebrations start in Thatcham with a trail around the local businesses starting on Saturday 28th November. On Friday 4th December head into The Broadway for the annual Christmas lights switch on. From 5pm there will be charity stalls on the green, plus donkeys, steam engines and Santa’s grotto will be in the middle of all the activities. With on-stage entertainment from local schools, KATS and Read Theatre School there is plenty to entertain you before the lights are turned on by the Mayor at 7pm.

Sunday 13th December - Mayor’s Carol Service If you enjoy a more traditional start to the festive season then join the Town Mayor of Thatcham, Councillor Sheila Ellison, at the annual Civic Carol Service on Sunday 13th December at 3pm in St. Mary’s Church. The service includes performances from Barfield Handbell Ringers and the Church Choir. Visitors are invited to enjoy some mulled wine and festive treats at the end of the service.

Have a Healthier, Happier Christmas

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk Christmas is often laden with expectations, anxieties, overindulgence and family tensions. It’s no coincidence that divorce lawyers are busiest in January.

So how can you make Christmas happier and healthier?

Take The Pressure Off • Buy presents throughout the year, even on holiday; gift shops may stock something unique.

• Try to resolve family conflicts beforehand.

• You can’t please all of the people all of the time, so ask everyone involved (including yourself) what one or two things really makes their Christmas. Agree on a plan that includes these things, plus exercise and group activities. Allot tasks to ensure one person doesn’t do everything.

• Bake and freeze food in advance where possible. avOid fesTive fOOd POisOning Hygiene can slip with extra food, extra cooks and extra time pressure, so: • Store and prepare ALL raw food separately from ready-toeat foods.

• Rub fruit and vegetables clean – don’t just rinse them.

• Defrost foods thoroughly and then cook or refrigerate immediately. Large turkeys take time - always check inside for ice crystals.

• Ensure your fridge stays

I’m not talking a mansion, a yacht and a Ferrari: just all the things required for comfortable, everyday living.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when it’s likely that they will have collected all the knick-knacks, gadgets and gizmos they’ll ever need. So what are the options when it comes to buying an original gift for the man or woman who says “There’s nothing I need”? give a goat At Oxfam (www.oxfam.org. uk) it costs just £25 to buy a goat for a needy family trying to survive in areas affected by war or drought, who can use the gift to produce nutritious dairy products such as milk and cheese. Oxfam also supplies a brightly coloured gift card that explains your purchase. an unforgettable experience If you’ve run out of gift

ideas for your nearest and dearest, why not give them an experience? The Closing of Woolhampton Post Office December 10th 2015 There will be many readers who will be truly sorry to know that after nearly 22 years as Postmistress of Woolhampton Post Of fice, Sandra Low is to retire and the Post Office will cease to trade.

Sandra has been very popular with customers from all parts of the area - not just Woolhampton.

Her patience and friendly attitude - together with her efficiency - has ensured that we, her customers, have not only

been confident of her service and advice on our business transactions, - but invariably had our day brightened by her.

Sandra’s words are quoted below - but I would like to add that although the Post Office will be badly missed - more importantly, Sandra’s personality and friendship will leave a significant gap in our Community.
