Type of Degree

Students enrolling on the Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy will need to be dexterous and possess an aptitude for interpersonal relationships, tact and discretion. They should have the capacity for listening, dedication and tolerance, in addition to showing psychological insight, a sense of responsibility and a balanced outlook. They will need to be able to demonstrate dedication, good communication skills and the ability for analysis and synthesis. Furthermore, they should be rigorous and attentive, with the capacity for innovation and problem-solving, demonstrating a positive attitude to research and a conscientious approach to study and independent learning.

This is an officially recognised University Degree, valid throughout the European Higher Education Area.

Career opportunities The Degree in Physiotherapy trains graduates for professional practice in a wide range of contexts and populations, such as Hospitals, Clinics, Health Care Centres (whether within the Spanish National Health Service or in the private field), Companies Health Services, Sports Clubs, Nursing Homes for the Elderly, Home Care, Schools, and Early Intervention Centres.

Course Contents Physiotherapy is basically an approach to understanding and caring for health through natural means, using physical agents and especially manual techniques to prevent illness and to improve or restore health. There is a growing demand in society for physiotherapy services, since natural means are employed, thus avoiding contraindications and adverse side-effects.

Recent decades have witnessed a process of continual change affecting health professionals, including physiotherapists.

As a health profession, physiotherapy is influenced and conditioned by this process, which has created new social and health scenarios. The profession must adapt to these changes and understand the shifting values, needs and expectations of society. Training is essential in order to provide quality care tailored to these demands.

From a conceptual point of view, training is considered the basis of professional physiotherapy practice.

Such training provides an overview of the individual in health and in illness, of health care functions and tasks and of optimal physiotherapeutic interventions. These aspects are all covered in the initial skills taught on the course programme, which address the individualised care patients should be offered during their treatment, the patient’s active contribution to overcoming his or her health problems, health promotion and prevention of illness and developing the necessary professional approach.

From a scientific point of view, in order to be able to offer quality individualised care, physiotherapists must be capable to understand scientific contributions which generate new perspectives on intervention and

research, and to apply the different scientific methods in the construction of knowledge.

Accordingly, the training provided in the Degree in Physiotherapy takes a primarily generalist approach, with the aim to teach future Physiotherapy professionals able to identify, to describe, to approach health problems that can be treated by a Physiotherapist, who is able to employ a series of methods, procedures, models, techniques and interventions which, through physical means, can cure, prevent and restore health from any kind of population with functional limitations, disability or modified physical function or health produced as a consequence of lesion, illness or other causes. Such professionals will also use the same means in the fields of health promotion, prevention of illness and protection and restoration of health. In all the above cases, the individual’s biological, psychological and social dimensions will be considered.
