Career opportunities Although there are some professional opportunities that do not require a medical speciality, the complex nature of medicine, European regulations and the structure of the Spanish health system mean that the vast majority of graduates decide to specialise after completing their studies. In Spain, in order to specialise, it is necessary to sit a national examination that enables doctors to choose the speciality to be taken, based on the result. After making the choice, graduates take a training programme called the M.I.R. (Resident Medical Intern) which lasts 4 or 5 years depending on the speciality chosen. The majority of specialist doctors work in the national health system, either in hospitals or in health centres, although it is also possible to work in private centres. Other employment options are the areas of public health, health management, university teaching and research.
Course contents Doctors are professionals responsible for preserving health, treating disease and the recovery of functions lost or affected by pathological conditions. This medical work is undertaken both with individuals and the general population. Medicine therefore includes the fields of health promotion and education, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and rehabilitation. Medicine courses are structured so that students acquire the scientific knowledge and skills necessary to work in the medical profession. The chronological sequence of learning starts with knowledge of the healthy human body, continues with the process of becoming ill and ends with the study of disease. The specific content includes the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out procedures for diagnosis and treatment competently, methodologies for the maintenance and promotion of health and the prevention of illness, and rehabilitation techniques.
