Type of Degree

Students should have an interest in aspects related to how the economy operates in economic policies and the economic agents intervening in society. Students should also have an aptitude for mathematics and statistics, and a capacity for analysis and synthesis. An aptitude for understanding abstract ideas, good communication skills, the ability for creative thought, a sociable outlook and an expansive view of the world and its social and political interactions are also desirable.

Access to Higher Degree programmes Students who have obtained the Degree in Economics may continue their officially recognised studies by taking a Master’s and Doctoral Degree course.

The University of Alcalá offers various officially recognised Master’s Degree programmes (lasting either 1 or 2 years), oriented either to professional practice, adapted to the needs of the market, or to academic activity, leading to a Doctorate.

COURSE ORGANISATION AND CONTENTS

Students who wish to study part-time may take the same programme spread over eight years.

Course contents The basic subjects listed in the study plan are taught in the first and second years. Subjects taught in the first year should provide students with sufficient knowledge to understand and assimilate the subjects taught in the following years.

In addition to the Basic Training subjects (worth 60 ECTS), there are a total of 99 obligatory credits. Subjects taught in the second and third year principally comprise those which will provide students with the theoretical, technical and practical bases of Economics.

Optional subjects, worth 6 or 9 credits, are introduced in the second academic year, but are mainly offered in the third and fourth years, and students are required to take a total of 42 Optional credits. External Practical Training (worth 15 ECTS) is also offered in the last two years, and is optional. It should be stressed that students who successfully complete 24 credits pertaining to those subjects comprising a specialisation will obtain a Special Mention in their Degree.

In addition to the optional courses offered in the fourth academic year, students are required to undertake a Final Project, worth 12 ECTS, where they are expected to apply the knowledge acquired during previous years. This final year enables students to consolidate the abilities, skills, practices and techniques which they are expected to have acquired, equipping them for professional practice in the fields to which this Degree is oriented.

The University of Alcalรก has established that a minimum of 12 credits in cross-disciplinary subjects must be offered on all course programmes, and must be studied by all students. In each academic year, the University will offer subjects (worth 6 ECTS each) enabling students to obtain 12 credits in cross-disciplinary skills. In accordance with current regulations, students are entitled to request validation of 6 crossdisciplinary credits for participating in university cultural, sporting, student representation, charitable and cooperation activities.

Objectives of the Degree in Economics The primary objective of this degree is to train professionals capable of analysing market behaviour, the conduct of economic agents and the consequences of governmental economic policy measures. The Degree in Economics also analyses possible responses to problems such as inflation, the determinants of welfare, economic growth, unemployment and economic imbalances, the role of the State as administrator of social resources and the problems associated with sustainability, among others.

The skills graduates will acquire will enable them to identify and anticipate market and sector opportunities, allocate resources, manage information, select and train personnel, and make the necessary decisions to achieve the goals of the institution in which they are employed.
