East Chambers Has Options to Start School

The East Chambers ISD Board of Trustees met in regular session on Monday, July 13, 2020 at 6:00 pm. via videoconference. Superintendent Scott Campbell gave a report on the situation with Covid-19 as it relates to the school system and in conversations following the meeting he advised The Hometown Press that school would start on August 17, 2020 and there would be options for students and parents. The school is going to use the same curriculum for both an in person, on campus model as well as an online version. The online version will be similar to the in person model because the student will have to be on the computer and logged in for the entire school day and each class teacher will take roll at the beginning of each class. Additional resources will be available for students that need just a little extra online time by being able to access those resources after the school day. Students and parents will be able to switch between models, but only every three weeks and not on a daily basis. The District will be releasing a complete guide and plan in the coming weeks via the publication "Community Connection" and the complete plan will be posted to the District website. For students that choose the in person model, the District will implement safety protocols including wearing of face coverings, hand

sanitizing, social distancing, and whatever other methods are deemed necessary to keep students safe while on campus. Transportation will be provided, however the District is asking those parents that can drive their students to the campus to do so as this will allow extra social distancing on the school busses for the students that must ride the school bus. Extra sanitation methods will be in place to provide additional deep cleaning of the school busses each evening after the routes are complete as well as extra measures inside the building will be implemented. During the action items portion of the meeting, the trustees approved a pay raise for employees that accumulated a $223,734.00 increase in total salaries and included a $49,200.00 salary for a first year teacher. Some changes in duties of the supplemental schedule were approved as presented and the trustees approved the employee handbook, student handbook, the transportation handbook as well as the student code of conduct. An agreement with LIT for dual enrollment was approved as well as the renewal of the district's liability and automobile insurance. The next regular meeting of the East Chambers ISD Board of Trustees will be Monday, August 10, 2020 at 6:00 pm. and more than likely via videoconference once again.

Large Marijuana Arrest Made  Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reports that this week Deputy Ethan Kahla observed a gray 2020 Chevrolet Silverado traveling east bound on IH10 near the 803 mile marker in Baytown, Chambers County, Texas, that failed to maintain a single lane and a traffic stop was initiated. Deputy Kahla made contact with the driver, Donald Barrows, 37, of Tacoma, Washington. Barrows appeared extremely nervous and the deputy requested consent to search the vehicle; Barrows denied consent and narcotics K-9 Harvey was deployed. While conducting the free-

air sniff of the vehicle, Harvey alerted on the vehicle, at which time Barrows was advised that a probable cause search would be conducted on the vehicle. The search of the vehicle revealed 78 vacuum sealed clear bags, weighing approximately 1 pound each, containing a green leafy substance located in 4 different suit cases inside the vehicle. Barrows was placed under arrest for Possession of Marijuana and transported to the Chambers County Jail. Justice of the Peace Precinct 5, David Hatfield, set bond at $40,000.
