Babin Commends FEMA for Awarding Hardin-Jefferson ISD Long-Awaited Hurricane Harvey Funding

U.S. Congressman Brian Babin (TX-36) released the following statement commending FEMA for awarding Hardin-Jefferson Independent School District (ISD) $27,818,876 in federal funding to replace Henderson Middle School, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey. by Wade Thibodeaux The problem with taking a few days off is that you kind of get used to not working and then reality hits you and you have to go back to work and it ain’t much fun. Such is the case that I find myself in this week as I actually took three days last weekend and went and played instead of working through the holiday like I would do on a normal weekend. In addition to all of that, last week was kind of slow as I only had about three meetings instead of the usual 5 or 6 meetings. This coming week, I make up for all of that as it’s what I refer to as my H E double hocky sticks week. I have 9 meetings before Friday and of course they are spread out in two towns that are 125 miles apart from each other. At least I start and end in the same town with only one little trip in between

Monday and Thursday.

I’ll live through all of this, but it sure would be nice if this Covid-19 thing would get over with so that everything would go back to normal and we could have a concert or something to go to on the weekends to give us a little break in the boredom.

In addition to all of that, I had to stop writing my column after that first paragraph on Sunday evening.....mostly because I was really struggling for something to say and I’m just now finishing it up on Monday evening......and, I still really don’t have anything to say. Actually, I can tell you about my day on Monday and how everything seemed to go wrong. First off, the stock market was way up and my stocks were way down, and then the stock market average ended up being pretty close to

no gain and my stocks were really, really way down. I was checking on all of this as I was sitting in a 3 hour Walker County Commissioners Court meeting that I really needed to be about an hour and a half long so that I could drive to Winnie to take care of a little business before the East Chambers ISD meeting Monday evening. So, I leave a couple of hours behind schedule and get to Winnie with just about an hour before the EC meeting and somehow miraculously get the things that absolutely had to be done.....done.

A large part of the reason that it took so long to get to Winnie on this particular trip was the drivers that I had the privilege of encountering on the road obviously had no idea that anybody else was on the road besides them and that includes the lady driving 40 MPH in a 70 MPH zone and speeding up just enough so that I couldn’t pass her on the hills just South of Livingston. Okay, so I make it to Winnie and get the things done that absolutely had to be done and I’m pulling into my of-

fice to log onto the computer for the school board meeting and there are a couple of guys looking at the suburban that I have for sale. I take time to get them started looking at the car and then go inside to log onto the meeting and my computer takes this time to decide to do an update. Now, I’m 15 minutes late logging into the meeting and then just about the time

that the action items start for the meeting, the two guys show back up from the test drive and want to talk about the suburban. So now, I’ve missed most of the school board meeting and will have to call the Super to find out what happened and all of the background information so that I can write an article next week and it’s not like I have extra time on Tuesday because

SAN SABA’S HOTEL DOFFLEMYER

In 1913 a builder, W.C. Dofflemyer constructed a building in downtown San Saba made of blue limestone, a material found in the southern part of the county. The first floor of the two-story structure was used as the San Saba National Bank.

The second floor served as a gentlemen’s club, a place where the city’s social gatherings such as galas and dances took place. Now the upstairs serves as a boutique 6-room hotel. The bottom floor is a deli and pecan store.

The deli serves breakfast and lunch.

Clay Nettleship, an oil and gas attorney who is the 5th generation of his family to live in San Saba, bought 4 buildings on a downtown city block. One of them was the Dofflemyer Building. He converted it into a hotel 4 years ago.

“Back in the 70’s the upstairs had been made into a 4-bedroom apartment and was a mess when I bought the building,” says Clay. “We’ve had great acceptance and stay full most of the time. I really wish I had 10 or 20 more rooms. We’re real proud of it. I think it’s a great addition to our city. We have tried to retain the

historical architectural integrity of the building while adding modern conveniences. The rooms have sort of an industrial feel to them.

The ambience is a blend of past and present, historic and contemporary. Each room is uniquely decorated.”

A steakhouse is planned a block from the hotel called the Pecan House Grill.

Fourteen years ago Clay and a group of local businessmen formed a foundation to renovate, rejuvenate and beautify downtown.

“People began leaving and moving to other parts of town to open their businesses so a good portion of the downtown area needed a facelift and was practically empty.

We began raising money to do historic renovations to public buildings, those that are not in private hands. So we have done complete renovations of 3 different buildings: a visitors center, garden club meeting facility and the building that houses the ambulance.”

The major fundraiser for the foundation is an event called the Catkins Ball.

“Catkins are pecan blooms that appear in the spring.

Since San Saba is known

as The Pecan Capital of the World we have lot of pecan trees around here.

We also have several stores that sell all kinds of pecan goodies. At the ball, sixty percent of the guests are from out of town. We have anywhere from 600 to 650 people attending. One year it’s formal, one year it’s casual. It lasts from 6 PM to 1 AM and we have a dinner dance, casino and auctions.

We usually have it in the spring every year.” On the same block of buildings that Clay bought is the Wedding Oak Winery. He’s a partner in that enterprise, which has been named one of the top five wineries in the state and now has tasting rooms in Burnet and Fredericksburg.

Nine individuals were arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail between Monday, July 6 and Saturday, July 11. Warrants from last week are also as followed.

The individuals have been magistrated and formally

informed of the charges against them. However, just because these individuals were arrested and magistrated does not mean they are guilty of the crimes they are charged with committing. Also, not everyone charged with a crime

is alleged to have committed the crime in Chambers County, but perhaps was simply arrested in Chambers County on outstanding warrant(s) while in Chambers County.

Instances in which individuals were arrested on outstanding

warrants, their original conviction and the reason they are on probation or parole, if available, is included in parenthesis set.

• First degree felony: punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• Second degree felony: punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.

• Third degree felony: punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

• State jail felony: punishable by up to two years in prison.

• Deferred adjudication probation: typically offered to the first time offenders. Defendants’ judgement is deferred until later, if ever. If they successfully complete the terms of their probation, they are not judge and thus have no criminal conviction in connection to the offense. However, if they accept deferred adjudication probation but fail to abide by the terms of their probation, they could be sentenced to the maximum time in prison allowable under the law without the benefit of a trail by jury.

• Class A misdemeanor: punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

• Class B misdemeanor: punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Students Emerge as Leaders During COVID-19 Through Service Learning (StatePoint) As learning has gone virtual to curb the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, educators and parents have been left with a pressing concern: how will this experience impact social and emotional development?

“The pandemic is having profound effects on children’s mental well-being, their social development, their safety, their privacy, their economic security and beyond,” a policy brief by the United Nations stated. “While children are not the face of this pandemic, its broader impacts on children risk being catastrophic and amongst the most lasting consequences for societies as a whole.”

While maintaining progress in core subject areas is imperative, a curriculum that develops leadership skills is equally essential to ensure that emotional development continues virtually.

An independent research study commissioned by Lead4Change found that students who completed

the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program experienced tangible emotional growth. The program involves lessons in leadership, as well as creating and implementing team projects to meet a need in the community. Those that completed the program experienced significant changes in leadership skills (60 percent of students improved), respect for others (54 percent) and ambition and innovation (53 percent). Programs of this nature can be completed virtually by adapting projects to address current concerns, and they can not only succeed without physical contact, but offer unique challenges that help students to grow as leaders.

Students at Mohave High School in Bullhead City, Ariz. reconsidered their project when quarantine began, creating a readaloud library of developmentally appropriate books for preschoolers.

With high schoolers reading preschoolers books and

teaching them literacy and social development skills, this resource allowed an early childhood program to continue virtually.

“The students developed a ‘can do attitude’ while working collaboratively to adapt to their new normal,” said teacher, Michele Leyendecker. “With so much uncertainty, this project truly gave them purpose.” The “T-Bird Readers” team was awarded Lead4Change’s grand prize, a $10,000 grant for a nonprofit of their choice.

In Garner, N.C., students participated in service learning and emerged as community leaders by directly addressing the local impact of the pandemic.

The “Corona Relief Crew” collaborated with volunteers and vendors to create and distribute kits with essential food and supplies for the homeless and those in nursing homes who have been severely impacted by the pandemic.

“Being an adult leader for the Corona Relief Crew has caused a paradigm

shift in how I view youth strength and their ability to lead,” educator Dr. Cleopatra Lacewell shared.

“This experience has taught me when students have well-organized plans, identified goals and established team structures, they can then perform as stellar leaders with minimum support.”

Vernal Tie-Down Roping Winner Colton Farquer Was First Up The first of about 90 tiedown ropers to compete at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo in Vernal, Utah, ended up winning.

Colton Farquer posted a 9.1-second run during the morning slack July 8, and nobody matched him.

“Normally that would make me nervous, so I tried to relax and make a good run,” Farquer said. “I had nothing to lose and just went with the basics.”

His traveling partner, Tyler Forsberg, roped immediately after with a 9.5. The pair stuck around to watch the rodeo for the next few days and were surprised to see run after run fall short of topping their times.

Four days and about 90 runs later, Farquer was still at the top while Forsberg tied for third with Marty Yates and Colt Papy.

“To watch all of the slack and every perf, it was definitely something crazy,” Farquer said. “I couldn’t believe it. I had confidence that I would place, but I didn’t think I would win.”

Farquer, 25, doesn’t just have his eyes on the prize, he has them on multiple prizes – the California Circuit, the ProRodeo Tour, the PRCA | RAM World Standings and qualifying for the major winter rodeos of the 2021 season.

“Every win counts this year, and this gives me a lot of con-

fidence since my goal was to make a solid run, and it ended up holding up against a lot of entries and really good guys,” Farquer said. “The more I win maybe things will change. But with how the year is going I want to win as much as I can to get qualified for the winter rodeos like Houston and San Antonio.”

Farquer’s win came aboard Woody, the same horse he’s competed on since high school. The 17-year-old, buckskin American Quarter Horse has become Farquer’s trusted partner in the arena.

“I’ve had him for 10 years and I have confidence in him,” Farquer said. “I know at summer rodeos you have to take a few extra swings, but he has a lot of speed.”

Farquer is well-versed in tough competition, having competed at the College National Finals Rodeo four times while on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo team, finishing fourth in 2017. He graduated with a degree in bio resource and agricultural engineering. But that’s a backup plan for after rodeo, he said.

Farquer made his ProRodeo debut in 2018, finishing seventh in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings for tiedown roping. The following season ended with him outside the top 50 of the world standings with $25,527.

Sunday Observations from Christy

WHEW!!!!! What a week!

As many of you on my social media know, on Monday my daughter and I were tasked with the utmost of difficult decisions for a pet owner. My “old lady” as we had grown to call Lil Bit, had fallen when I got home, she could not get up, nor when I got her up, could she stand. She was not yelping, crying, or exhibiting any signs of pain.

She was however, one very tired 14 year old dog. She had gone downhill progressively over the last 6 months, and was on more meds than me.

I am that person who said, I WILL NEVER HAVE A PET THAT IS MEDICATED.

But you see..........as she got older her arthritis hurt her.

So she had some chews she took for the last 7 years.

No biggie, it was an added treat. Then there was her heart worm meds, her flea meds, normal right? Then we added anti itch meds this spring because we had major feet issues. She developed an infection in her feet, so there were meds for that. Meds for her pads. Then 2 weeks ago her liver was a “little off” so let’s give her these. Oh lets change her food too, to a specialized food. That she despised.

Monday, I pulled up my big girl pants, and said, ENOUGH. I love you enough to stop this. My daughter met me, we cried, the vet was super kind, she still never whimpered. Didn’t bark.

Just looked at me with those sweet eyes, that were no doubt 90% blind. She licked my face, and went across a rainbow bridge where she did not hurt anymore. Where she could chase my cats who went before her. And it sucked. Super bad. It still does.

But I know 100% she had a great life with me. She was happiest laying on her air conditioner vent, close to the kitchen, waiting on a dropped morsel of food, or a treat if she could con you out of it. She loved everyone. I only heard her growl one time in 14 years, at a man at a gas station. But she barked.

LOUDLY. Ear piercingly LOUD. Everyone who knew her, even her regular vet, commented that I got “a good one” with that rescue.

She just was sweet.

I also know, 100% we made the right choice. You have got to love them enough to let them go. She rescued my little heart after a divorce, she kept me sane when my daughter moved out, she was there for many rocky times.

She did her job and did it well. I just had to do mine. If you have been so blessed as to love a fur baby, you know the heart ache. You know what I speak of. You also know, when it’s time. No one can tell you that. But on Sunday, she had what would end up being her last dinner.

The vet might have fussed

as it was my Moms leftover spaghetti, but in hindsight, it was perfect. She loved people’s food more than any dog food. Even for the last year of HOMEMADE dog food..........yep I did that too.

Happy Sunday peeps..... not my normal cheery stuff, but you know sometimes the cheery stuff was the precedent for the hard day.

And the cheery memories will help you past the hard day. It has helped me this week, for sure. If you have never loved a pet, I beg you.......go get one.

Nothing will love you as unconditionally as a 4 legged baby. One day, maybe, there will be another dog. For now, me and one cat are hanging out. Alex is good.

He is finally figuring out he can eat on the floor, although he still thinks he needs to be on a pedestal..........he never understood it wasn’t just about him, it was about keeping her out of his food.

THEY'RE STILL OUT THERE

I had decided to write about the closing weeks of the Coastal Conservation Association’s 2020 STAR tournament when I got an email enticingly entitled, “Psst-they’re still out there!” from my friend, Dylan Sassman, assistant tournament director.

And they are. Dylan was referring to the winning fish in the largest prize-awarding fishing tournament in

history. CCA and its sponsors partner to give away a million dollars’ worth of merchandise and scholarships every summer. If you haven’t already entered, as we have, there’s still time.

But not much. The tournament runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This year it ends at 5:00 P.M. September 7 -- the first Monday in September.

But you must be a member of CCA and be registered in the STAR tournament.

The tournament’s glamour attraction is the Redfish Division.

The first five anglers to catch a current year-tagged redfish (and pass a polygraph test) will receive a new Ford F-150 pickup truck, a boat, motor, and trailer!

The second five win everything except the truck. There are also handsome prizes for winning other species divisions. Be sure and read all the rules.

And join and register!

Every year, there are heartbreaks due to non-registrations.

This year, there have been seven. If that were me, I’d lie down and eat black sand!

So far, there have been four of the luckiest Texans imaginable two guys and two girls – certified as winners.

One of them will only be in the third grade! Eight-year-old Marilyn Monroe (her real name and age!) caught the second tagged redfish while fishing with her family near Texas City. Kids under age 18 are awarded a $25,000 scholarship in lieu of a truck. Of the other three reds caught, two were around Corpus and one came from near Baffin Bay. Bait information wasn’t available, but redfish can be caught on shrimp, mullet, and

a variety of artificial lures. If COVID-19 closes boat ramps again, know that wade fishermen have caught many instead of onboard boats. Both methods are legal.

My largest three reds fell to artificial lures – one to a copper penny-colored sand worm, another to a topwater lure fished near the shore, and one to a flashy red/ silver, iridescent, soft plastic that Larry Bozka gave me. But my best redfishing day ever is illustrated by the attached photo of longtime friend, Sam Caldwell, with the stringer of reds he and I caught in Aransas

Bay one morning.

During an outdoor writers’ event, Caldwell and I were paired in the drawing.

We fished with a guide and used cut crab from one of his traps. It didn’t take long. We were on fish almost instantly and began catching reds in the 20-25-inch class.

Each one ran with its power from where hooked around to the other side of the boat before finally coming to the net.

We were the only boat to limit out. We FED the rest of the writers that evening!

Sixty redfish were tagged. Fifty are “still out there!”

“This is only my third year of ProRodeo, and my circuit is where I’ve done better, but I’m getting the hang of traveling,” Farquer said. “This year is crazy, so we’re taking it week by week. It’s hard to plan too far in the future so I’ll just keep rodeoing and try to get qualified for next

year.”

Farquer kicked off the 2020 season by winning the RAM California Circuit Finals Rodeo in Lancaster, Calif.

Before his Vernal win, Farquer was outside the top 50 in the world standings.

But the $3,661 he won should give him a healthy boost in more ways than one.
