History is something that happened a few seconds ago or it may have happened 500 years ago.....both are history, it’s just that we were probably present for a few seconds ago and I don’t think that any of us were around 500 years ago. So, we have to depend on other sources for our history perspectives from something that happened
that was not in our presence. Those sources could be textbooks or a more recent source might be google. If you don’t know something, just “google it”.....right???? However, google is just a compilation of things that have been written by other sources and if you search hard enough, you can probably find a source that agrees with your perspective. with history books as well, the book is written from the writer’s perspective and then the reader applies their own perspective to what they are reading and then you have an opinion. Some opinions tend to carry a little more weight.....a history professor that has spent years researching a certain topic would probably have a more substantive opinion than someone like
me who simply “googled” a topic and then verbalized my opinion, but then maybe not if the history teacher had an agenda that he was trying to prove and was skewing the interpretations to fit his narrative. Anyway, all of this to simply say that none of us were there and as we go about discussing history, let us be aware that it’s all about interpretation and perspec-
tive. I may have to take off from writing this column next week due to the fact that I have used all of these big words this week and I may have to rest for a while. I have used perspective, perplexed, syllables, occurrences, acquaintances, intriguing, compilation, substantive, verbalized, interpretations, and probably a few others. Some of those
are 3, 4, and 5 syllable words and they really strain my brain....so to speak. I just wanted to give you guys and gals something to think about this week without getting off on any particular subject that I could be held liable for penning an opinion. Happy Sunday peeps.... when I needed angels, God sent me a boatload of them. I have not dealt with one human being this week that’s been anything less than polite and compassionate. Maybe it’s just Fort Worth. Maybe it’s just God knew if I crossed the path with a rude one I would go to Tarrant county jail. Whatever it was, I’m remotely sane due to extreme kindness this week. And I will take it.

When it became evident a lift chair was necessary, I thought let’s go rent
one. Rentacenter was out, so I sat in their parking lot and called a few places. The last one I called, The Healthcare Store in Hurst, had an angel answer their phone. They didn’t rent them, but she explained about soft surfaces being sanitized and bed bugs (YUCK) and I was so glad the first place was out. We discussed what was happening, and y’all she spent 30 min on the phone with me. When I called yesterday to buy a chair sight unseen that she recommended, she was good

Perspective...... it’s a three syllable word and I’m sure that some of you are perplexed that I’m able to spell it, much less know that it has three syllables, but nonetheless it is the subject of this week’s
column. Perspective by definition is how you evaluate or define a particular situation based on your own ideas and life occurrences. For instance, usually in a divorce situation, both sides see things a little
differently, otherwise they probably wouldn’t be getting a divorce in the first place. Each side has their own perspective as to just exactly how everything happened and why. This situation occurs in almost ev-

As far as politics go, I tend to lean pretty far to the conservative side, but I have a lot of friends, acquaintances, or complete strangers that I can have a political discussion with because I usually want to hear

When people listen to each other, things usually go along and the conversation is beneficial to both sides. Things start to go South when we try to inflict our perspective and beliefs on the other person that pretty much has their mind made up to go a different
way. It’s totally intriguing to me that two network news stations can watch the President speak and have completely different views of what he said...... perspective. Another thing that intrigues me is history. We have heard alot about history lately, but in reality it is simply the perspective of the person telling the story about the events (Cont. on pg 4)

All pet owners have either known the deep pain of losing a pet, or will sometime in the future. I understand that sentence is a doleful way to start a column. I apologize. But it’s true that they’ll all pass. Every living thing does. Maybe you saw the installment of “Yellowstone” when Kevin Costner’s character’s grandson had just shot his first deer and Costner explained death to him. It was moving. All pet deaths hurt. I’ll admit to still grieving over the tragic loss of my deer dog in the prime of his life. Death comes in many ways, but some may be avoidable. One of those is snakebite. Texas has four poisonous snakes – rat-
tlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouth water moccasins, and coral snakes. Coral snake bites are rare. The others happen with unwanted regularity. Although rattlesnakes often sound a warning, they don’t always rattle, which makes it easy for someone or his dog to surprise the reptile in its realm. And that often leads to a snakebite. My outrageous friend, Horace Gore, was turkey hunting one morning and stopped to listen for gobbling. He thought he felt something on his boot but was preoccupied. He felt it a couple more times and looked down. A small rattlesnake had just completed its third strike at his boot. It had never rattled. Copperheads are camouflaged and often hidden in leaves or pine needles. Western diamondback rattlesnakes and other species of rattlers cause the most
snakebites and the potency of their venom is about twice as severe as that from copperheads. Cottonmouths are a little more potent and coral snakes and Mojave rattlesnakes are the most deadly in Texas, according to Alan Tennant’s “Field Guide to Texas Snakes.” The best advice is to stay on open paths and avoid clumps of rock, cactus, or brush – especially in the dark. Charlie Pride even sang about that. Many dogs are bitten when they curiously investigate too closely. Getting a snake-bitten dog to a vet quickly is the best medicine, although antivenin is expensive, if even available. Often, time and distance work against you. Snake avoidance treatment helps preventing snakebite before it happens. We’ve put five dogs through the process for all three most likely snakes. It’s not available for
coral snakes. And with all our adventures throughout the Texas outback, we’ve never had one bitten. Is it guaranteed? No. But it greatly reduces the possibility. The way it usually works, a dog is fitted with an electric training collar and led near an
experienced handler with a snake on the ground. The snake either has its venom sacks removed or its mouth stapled shut. As the dog draws close enough, the reptile usually strikes, and the handler simultaneously activates the electric collar. The dog
usually jumps away. And seldom forgets the sight, smell, and sound (if it’s a rattlesnake) of the reptile AND the jolt associated with it. We use Winter Kennels in Austin and Burnet. They charge $60/ snake – a small price for peace of mind.
