About

For my project I set out to be more experimental in photoshop, learn new skills and tools that I was reluctant to use before. As I am not a photographer I treat ed my project as a mixed media work using various photographs to create collage works that focus on dis tortion of the human form and the natural environment. This magazine details this exploration and its outcomes.

Bio

My name is Kasey Leonard and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Screen Arts year 2 at Sit, specializing in Concept Art and Design. Photography has never been one of my strong suits as I’m an Oil painter and digital artist by trade, I’ve only ever used photography in a way that works directly with my painting.

Locations

This work features the use of multiple imag es, all taken in a variety of different locations throughout Queens Park, such as the Rose Garden, the Glasshouse and the Avery.

Shape

Here I aimed to experiment how harsh and sharp shapes in a college can affect the out come. I experimented with various colors and images, however my favorite was the one that simply contained im ages of greenery.

A simple bust as seen previously, however in this version I’ve adjusted the color balance on the statue to make it appear more green and in line with the background. I prefer this one as it keeps color consistency. In many of these collage images featuring statues I’ve aimed to use the images surrounding them as borders to help make them the central fo cus without being drowned in the background.

One of the experiments I wanted to do was to place an object from an other image into a completely new image, yet make it feel authentic (as if it belonged). Originally the statue was in front of a brick wall, but with some editing I managed to change the entire atmosphere of the statue.

The two key tools I used for this image was the magnetic select tool to ensure a smooth cut of the stat ue, and adjusting the color balance/ exposure. Because the environment the statue is now in is a lot dark er and greener, I had to deepen the shadows and offset them with a green tinge, as if the green is bouncing off the pale statue.

This work was heavily inspired by Mike Parisella, a key artist model of mine who specializes in collage and photography, often meshing works of multiple different art styles together.

Throughout most of my project I used the cloning tool to manipulate many photos. Using these two photos above I created the image to the left. I wanted to create a harsh line through the face yet have the back ground seamless, (look natural and untouched by any editing). Using the cloning tool I was able to remove many of the stray hairs and foliage that didn’t line up in the image, and while this was tedious and took time it was well worth it in the end, creating a distinct contrast between the foreground and background.
