The court has awarded journalist, poet and author Tony Mochama, Sh9 million in damages in a defamation suit. Magistrate A Obura directed that Shalja Patel and Prof Wambui Mwangi furnish him with a written aplogy within 14 days. Mochama went to court in 2014 after two women accused him of sexual harassment on September 20, 2014 at a lunch meeting at the home of Wambui.

A Nyeri woman died under unclear circumstances in Dubai after reportedly leaving her house at 3am on Wednesday last week to meet someone. The body of the 22-year-old Suzan Makena was found in the sea that Wednesday morning, which was coincidentally her birthday.

EA Portland Cement to lay off entire workforce, the firm’s CEO Stephen Nthei says all positions in the company have been declared redundant and will affect both unionisable and nonunionisable workers in the company. They say the Nairobi Securities listed company has been making losses of up to Sh8 million daily which has impacted negatively on sales and subsequent profitability, hence the move. Subsequently, all jobs will be reconfigured in terms of job consolidation and enrichment, in line with the restructuring. The cash strapped company reported a 30 percent increase in loss to Sh1.26 billion for the half year ended December 2018 up from the Sh949.2 million loss it posted six months before. The company attributed the heavy loss to increased output prices, a sluggish market and production challenges, arising from the company’s tight working capital position. This is not the first time the company is restructuring.

Stanbic Bank to lay off over 250 employees The bank is said to have issued a memo to permanent and pensionable employees offering them a voluntary early retirement package which they are at liberty to accept or decline. Among the benefits offered to employees in the early retirement package include retention of their monthly salary to the last day of work. The employees will also receive payment in lieu of notice as per the individual employment contract. Stanbic also offered to retain employees' medical scheme for the remainder of the calendar year up to December 31, 2019.

At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured when a gunman opened fire at a Walmart shopping center in El Paso, Texas, making it one of the ten worst mass shootings in U.S. history; with the 21-year-old suspect, Patrick Crusius now in custody. Law enforcement sources said the suspect is Patrick Crusius, 21, of Dallas, Texas Surveillance footage shows an image of the gunman walking through front entrance of Walmart The shooting took place at the Walmart near the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas on Saturday. At least 20 people have been killed and at least 26 others, including two children, were wounded. The gunman, wearing ear defenders and cargo pants, first opened fire in the parking lot outside the store. He then walked inside the store in a calm and confident state, as if he was 'on a mission', a witness said.
