The cable companies have started investing in R&D enormously. From manufacturing technology-driven products to implementing industry 4.0, they are taking every step possible to be technologically advanced and compete with the international market.

Wire & cable is the

backbone of the muchhyped electrical and electronics industry. Much similar to the blood vessels of the human body, the wires and cables are the channels that transmit power and data, empowering today's civilized societies. The government's initiatives to boost the domestic manufacturing sector and infrastructure have paved the way for the wire & cable sector.

India's ambitious renewable energy target, expansion of power transmission & distribution, and increasing investments in real estate and transportation (roadways, metro, railways and airways) are some of the interesting developments that promise a bright future for the wire and cable industry.

Talking about the wire & cable as an important sector driving the growth, Mr. Bhushan Sawhney, – Executive President and Chief Business Officer

Manufacturers must brace themselves, expand their facilities, and strengthen the supply chain structure if they want to be an active part of this mega expansion. Apart from the huge demand for quantity, several new product types, like BMS cables, fire survival cables, and home automation solutions will be in high demand,” he added.

With technology becoming increasingly integrated, wires and cables are gaining more importance now than ever before. The applications of wires & cables have increased due to growing data centres and IT facilities ensuring secure and affordable connectivity. Moreover, the demand for next-gen gadgets and the rollout of 5G and 6G services are acting as catalysts for the ever-growing industry.

“Some of the major trends defining the growth in demand of the wire and cable industry are: meeting the demand in view of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), surge in EV charging products & accessories, and the rise of the export potential of the industry. Additionally, there will be a spurt in the demand for segments like railway cables, solar cables, amongst a few other segments to name,” says Mr. Ashish Mangal, Managing Director, Dynamic Cables Ltd.

Mr. Abhivandan Lodha, DirectorSales, Chandresh Cables Ltd. (AVOCAB) added, “The growing number of infrastructure development projects like the expansion of the metro railway network, the development & construction of airports, and various others. Notably, we are expecting to see a drastic rise in investments and spending from the government and the private sectors. These factors are playing a crucial role in bringing growth opportunities to the wire & cable industry.”

Government's Initiatives Creating Demand

With rapid urbanization; the low voltage market portrays dominance in the cable market; hence, cable companies are trying to bring innovative products into the building wire segment.

Talking about the development, Mr. Hemant Gadhave, Vice President –Business, Panasonic Life Solutions India Private Ltd. says “There are many prospects driving the growth of the Indian retail market for cables and wires, with the rise in housing demand being the most significant. The demand for residential spaces is continually increasing because of the government's 'Housing for All' plan, which is supported by a massive influx of investments and advantageous policies. A continual need for housing wires is also being created by the government's urban and rural electrification programmes, such as 'Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY)' and '24x7 Power for All'. Other factors fueling the demand for housing include rapid urbanisation, an increase in nuclear households, and the simplicity of obtaining financing. These provide us with fantastic potential to grow our B2C sales in the house wires area.”

“Under the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), capital expenditures are to be made in the key infrastructure sectors over FY 2020-25. There is a strong thrust on oil & gas projects, renewable power projects, tunnelling, and ventilation projects in highways, railways, and metro rail projects. Other factors favouring are the 100 percent electrification program for railways and the development of smart cities,” he added.

“As far as the demand in the power sector is concerned, the ambitious government-driven 'Power for All' program, coupled with other sectorial reforms, is driving the growth of the

power cables market segment,” said Mr. R. Sridharan, President & CEO, Birla Cable Ltd.

Along the similar lines, Mr. Vinay Rathi, Director, Gloster Cables Ltd. added, “Since India is a developing country with several projects for the further development of infrastructure, the market potential for the wire and cable industry looks more than promising. In fact, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (RAPDRP), and so on –are some of such initiatives. In addition, the upgradation of existing airports and new airports in Class B & C class cities, high-speed road & rail connectivity, renovations & upgradations of ports, and programs like 'Housing for All' & Smart Cities' projects are also some of the major driving factors. As per the Economist, the electrical manufacturing sector is growing at CAGR of 15-20 percent. Keeping all the factors in consideration, there is a huge potential for the electrical manufacturing sector.”

Mr. Parasmal Jain, Director, Fybros mentions digitalization and growing demand for energy efficiency as other factors determining the growth of the wire & cable sector. “The Indian government is focusing on modernizing the country's electricity grid through the use of smart grid technologies and digitalization. It is expected to drive demand for advanced electrical systems and equipment, including sensors, control systems, and communication networks,” said Mr. Jain, adding, “To meet the growing demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the government is promoting energy efficiency in buildings, industry and transportation. This will drive

demand for energy-efficient equipment, appliances and electric vehicles.”

India's infrastructure story remains incomplete without the mention of its ambitious renewable energy target. The country plans to have 500 GW of non-fossil-based power capacity by 2030 – a dream that can never be fulfilled without the immense contribution of the wire & cable sector.

Elaborating on the subject, Mr. Shashi Amin, CEO – Cable Solutions, APAR Industries Limited, says, “India is one of the emerging countries in recent times for generating solar energy. With favourable government policies and a conducive environment, India is gearing up to execute the world's most extensive renewable energy expansion plan. For a solar plant, cables play a pivotal role in interconnecting solar modules, combiner boxes, inverters, and other electrical components all the way to taking the generated power to the grid. In the last decade, India witnessed a sharp increase in demand for and technological advancement of modules, structures, inverters, and copper cables. But in this metamorphosis, the copper cables could not meet a few critical challenges besides ensuring lower transmission losses. Inspired and witnessing these needs, APAR Industries developed and launched a special photovoltaic (PV) solar cable that sustains the surge and other harmonic transitions during electrical power transmission. These surges occur at all levels between applications, like PV modules, inverters, inverters to end power distribution grids, etc.”

Impact of 5G on Cable Industry

The 5G revolution promises to have a mass impact across various sectors and change the lives of billions of people. Meanwhile, Bharat Net, touted to be the world's largest rural broadband connectivity program,

aims at connecting all the 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats (GP) across the country.

According to a recent report by Markets and Markets, the global fibre optics market size is estimated to be USD 4.9 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach USD 8.2 billion by 2027, at a CAGR of 10.9 percent from 2022 to 2027. The report further states that Asia Pacific is expected to hold the largest share of the fiber optics market during the forecast period. Various companies have put their efforts and deployed necessary resources in introducing innovative products from time to time depending on the requirements of the endusers in the industry.

Mr. R. Sridharan, President & CEO, Birla Cable Ltd. affirms, “In the telecom sector, the requirement for high-speed broadband applications is driving the demand for a variety of optical fibre cables. Moreover, the deployment of 5G mobile communication technologies is enabling exponential demand growth in the installation of the high-density optical fibre cable network.”

“Opening of markets after COVID-19, new residential constructions & commercial spaces will be some of the major growth drivers for 2023. 5G and 4G deployments will also give a push to the telecom hardware industry which has been in a state of slowdown for the past few years. A major share of investments is allocated by telecom operators in India to increase the coverage of 5G, which will trickle down to robust demand for all telecom products. Wireless and highbandwidth 5G also poses to cut into the market for copper networking which we are closely watching. Globally speaking, the world is looking at India as a reliable and alternative supply chain solution for various products. Thus, anyone who can capitalize on this wave will surely benefit,” adds Mr. Vipul Nagpal,

“With Industry 4.0 and digitalization increasing the load on machine networks, the network technology should be as functionally reliable and powerful as possible, with permanent network stability. Taking into consideration the increasing size and complexity of machine networks, the correct design and real-time monitoring of the network and the downstream evaluation of diagnostic data becomes a key focus for LAPP. Manufacturers including LAPP will also channel efforts towards integrating Industry 4.0 concepts such as smart supply chains into their operations and developing high-speed connectivity solutions. We are also targeting to pilot smart factories in different locations of LAPP,” said Mr. Gary Bateman, Managing Director, LAPP India.

nature where major culprits are substandard Wires and Cables. The company's latest product launches consist of the Medium Voltage (MV) and High Tension (HT) cables. Medium voltage cables are easy to install cables, designed to be durable and long lasting. They are used by large electricity consumers, like industrial companies and large broadcasting towers. MV cables are also used in construction equipments like cranes for power supply. High Tension cables are used for transmission and distribution of power with a range over 1.1 kV. HT cables can endure high temperatures, provide high transmission and longer life. Recently, our team produced 1km single length of HT cable. The cable is 1km long, 3Core x 240 sq. mm. 33kV and weighs up to 11MT. RR Kabel is one of the few companies in India which have produced single length 1km wire. Over the past two years, our cable solutions business has developed and introduced specialised OFC cables, tether cables, tactical cables, submarine pressure tight cables, and torpedo cables for defence and shipyards. We have achieved many UL approvals which have further strengthened our exports to the US markets.

Our flagship innovative light-duty cable – APAR Anushakti house wire,

powered by e-beam technology is now easily available for every household. This product is meltresistant, fire-retardant and offers 50 years of life. Along with wires, cables & harnesses for automotive, we are manufacturing and supplying a complete range of integrated harnesses for electric buses, 2 & 3electric vehicles (EV), EV chargers, solar jumpers and moulded harnesses with an inline fuse. With increasing requirements for quickto-install cable products and quality that outlasts, we are developing a complete range of cable harnesses for locomotives & railway coaches, earthing kits for rolling stock, PA system cable harnesses and many more.

APAR is the largest manufacturer of electron beam cables in India, with three e-beam accelerators (1.5 MeV, 2.5 MeV, and 3 MeV). We have recently commissioned a 2.5 MeV ebeam line, over and above the existing three e-beam facilities at our Khatalwada plant in Gujarat. Our cables factory is also commissioning 2 additional CCV lines. With favourable government policies and a conducive environment, India is gearing up to execute the world's most extensive renewable energy expansion plan. New innovations and recent developments

Adding new products and innovations is a constant endeavour at Orient Cables. We are always on the lookout for new opportunities to add to our product lines and increase our outreach to serve more customers. In the optical fibre space, we have added CPRI/spiral armoured cables in single and multimode fibre which are extensively used in 4G and 5G deployments. In copper cables, we have added fire alarm cables, AISG cables, and speaker cables. Also, we've added CAT-6a complying with the

latest horizontal performance specifications of ANSI/TIA 568.2-D including AXT, 28 AWG thin CAT-6, and a no-spline version of CAT-6.

We worked towards networking cable capacity enhancement in 2022. For next year, we are focussing more on the utilization of this expanded capacity in India and overseas. The final result is a high-quality metallurgical structure, which is then coiled onto pallets and shrinkwrapped to avoid any damage during shipment. DMB produces a full range of bunched copper wire products, tailormade to each customer's requirements, for use in building wires and cables, and customized flexible copper conductors with smaller wire sizes for added flexibility. purity find their application in special cable products offered to the nuclear, marine, and oil and gas industries while the bare copper wire is also used in Soudronic technology for the canmaking industry.

In terms of aluminium products, the company's EC-grade aluminium rods are 99.7% pure and the production complies with the most stringent requirements of ASTMB 233-97.

DMB's aluminium and aluminium alloy rods are used for cables, wires, and a variety of AAC, AAAC and ACSR overhead conductors supplied to global utilities for transmission purposes

For a consistent supply of aluminium, DMB has developed a solid, long-term partnership with Abu Dhabi-based Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the world's largest premium aluminium producer. Its DAC facility uses liquid aluminium, which is supplied at 760°C directly from EGA–this offers greater efficiency and sustainability for the manufacturing process. LS: Headquartered in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the Company has three manufacturing sites located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Aurora, Ohio; and Sandwich, England. Each site is equipped with state of the art compounding and laboratory equipment. We pride ourselves on the ability to produce our products at multiple locations, essentially de-risking a customer's supply chain. In addition, we continue to expand our warehousing capabilities, which enable SACO to deliver 90% of our portfolio from stock. SACO supports its customers with a global technical team, which is equipped to support customers through product launches, process optimization, regulatory questions and application development. WCI: As SACO AEI Polymers enters in JV with Bihani; could you please brief us on this strategic partnership? What kind of synergies do you foresee after the incorporation of SACO AEI Bihani Polymers Pvt. Ltd.?

Sushil Bihani: The joint venture is not based on a relationship that is working on experimentation; rather both parties have been in the Indian market for over a decade. With the help of SACO

AEI, the Bihani Group has been able to bring halogen-free compounds to India and its neighboring countries. Today, Bihani's commercial coverage extends to over 20 countries. This reach, combined with SACO's global footprint, and detailed knowledge of customer requirements, gives SACO AEI Bihani (SAB) a real jump in servicing the customers here in India. We expect serious work on the enhancement of formulations to meet the changing customer requirements, therefore we have equipped the JV accordingly.

SACO AEI Polymers has been churning out its product for over two decades now. Some of these products are now made in India and sold to select customers. With the incorporation of SACO AEI Bihani, the AEI Compounds business would shift to SAB making it a revenue positive Company from the first year. It is a matter of great pride that we are in a position to invest in state-of-theart technologies in India. We are expecting that in the next twothree quarters, we would be running the additional capacities in our current site at Bhiwadi. Luca Saggese: We have had a relationship with the Bihani group for almost a decade. They became our partners when we wanted to foray into India and the neighboring countries. That relationship blossomed over the years and created an opportunity for this joint venture, where we plan to integrate our technology and R&D efforts to develop and deliver the next-generation Wire & Cable products. We are starting with halogen-free thermoplastics in the market, and then we're going to move into the thermoset segment. Claudio Massimo Galli: The strategy behind this joint venture is not just to sell our product in India, but also to understand our customers in a better way. We are pretty

known in the Indian market, but establishing our brand here can give us an opportunity to know what our customers would like to have in the future and develop a product accordingly with our knowledge and experience.

WCI: What are your views on the Indian wire and cable market?

LS: I find a tremendous opportunity for our business in India. The customers here are technically sound. They have invested in stateof-the-art equipment and laboratories for testing their own products as well as the compounds. They have a very global view of how they can grow their businesses. And I think it's their global view that makes us an ideal partner for wire and cable customers in India. The Indian government has launched various schemes to boost infrastructure, internet connectivity, electricity supply, and clean energy transition and we provide solutions in all these segments.

We are expecting two greenfield projects in the next 18 to 24 months.

JB: Wire & cable acts as a nervous system of any structure. Talking about the kind of growth the world is looking at, in a recessionary phase, ours is the only country that is extremely promising. When it comes to specific products such as halogen-free, these products have been there in service for over 20 to 30 years. As new building construction technologies are coming in, there is more emphasis on fire safety. Halogen-free is the product, which is the need of the hour; however, halogen-free has its own set of issues. And these issues can be addressed only through the very specified and specific manufacturing process. We have understood this over time. We are going to offer products consistently over a period of long time. The fire safety regulations have become very tight. HFFR has a tendency not to emit smoke. The application of such products is only going to help contribute to public safety. Over the period of time, we hope to see the shift of building wire from PVC to HFFR.

WCI: Where do you see SAB five years down the line?

LS: It is important to us that our customers trust us not only with their current orders but also with their future needs. Within the next five years, SAB will be a world class manufacturing site, producing state of the art products, with a customer centric and quick go to market product development team. We plan to launch a center of excellence in India to develop the next-gen halogen-free compounds. We expect to be a customer's preferred supplier and we will continue to invest to make sure it is so.

WCI: What are the key strengths of the company that helps you stay ahead of your competitors?

LS: We have the ability to develop high-quality products that meet the new standards using a combination of unique materials and compounding know-how. When customers see an opportunity, they want to get the solution quickly; we give our customers the advantage to be the first entrant in new markets. In

addition to that, our service model relies on having the right product in inventory at all times. In the last few years, the pandemic has really tested this model with supply shortages and demand spikes. Stocking products locally, for quick delivery has been and will remain a key advantage.

WCI: What future do you foresee for cross-linking polymers?

LS: It is important to understand why cross-linked products are needed in the wire & cable sector. The desire to drive more energy through the metal conductors generates heats. This heat typically melts standard thermoplastic insulation, and that's the primary reason why cross-linked polymers are important. They don't melt off the wire and keep everyone safe. Further, cross-linked polymers are much tougher than standard thermoplastics. This enhanced toughness and chemical resistance make cross-linked products the right solution for environments where safety is a priority. The market for these products has been growing steadily, as the electricity is being demanded in every corner of the world. Therefore, I expect continued growth for decades to come.

Group Nirmal: Steel Wire Industry Seeking a Level-Playing Field

Established in 1971, Group Nirmal has a diverse

product range and capabilities for the manufacturing of GI wires, aluminum conductors, steel pipes, hot rolled products, and construction steel. The group has recently celebrated the completion of being in business for 50 years, which is a remarkable milestone. In an interview with Wire & Cable India, Mr. Nirmal Saraf, President, Steel Wire Manufacturers' Association of India (SWMAI) and Managing Director, Nirmal Wires (P) Ltd. – Group Nirmal, talks about the scenario of the steel wire industry, some pertinent challenges, and his message tothefellowindustryplayers.

Wire & Cable India: Share your views on the steel wire sector.

Nirmal Saraf: The steel wire sector is going through a difficult time because steel prices across the world are dropping and they have dropped to a level where the international FOB prices are currently about a hundred dollars per tonne lower than the Indian prices. This is majorly because of the difficulty in importing – the double whammy of the mandatory BIS and the import duty makes importing almost next to impossible or very difficult. Indian manufacturers have kept their prices much above internationalprices.

The export markets had opened up for India in the postpandemic period as the world was looking towards India as a supplier. However, presently, duetothe highpricesof steel in India, the international markets again are being drawn towards China. Although China is also still going through a bad situation due to the impact of the pandemic, the local demand is low and the export share is still higher than the former. The Southeast nations are exporting products like wire rods in a big way. Moreover, they are quite focused on downstream products like wires, which are affecting the export share of the Indian market. Thus, the Indian wire

manufacturing industry is in a difficult situation. The major problems are of raw material security and prices of the raw materials.

WCI: Shed some light on the growth potential of the Indian steel wire sector. Also, talk about the major challenges in the sector.

NS: First of all, I would like to talk about the potential of the Indian steel wire segment. We have observed a surge in international buyerslookingtobuild long-termpartnerships with Indian companies. This is a very encouraging change. However, as might beexpected, nobodywould be inclined to pay higherprices. Inaddition tothepricepoints, anotherkey challenge is meeting therequirements forsuperlativequality and services. The Indian steel wire industry will have to gear uptobeingmorequality-oriented.

Another importantaspect is thecostentailed in the process of converting the wire rods into wires. The Indian wire manufacturing industry is one of the finest globally. Our products are comparable with the products manufactured by leading players in China in terms of cost and quality. We can perform even better than China in this regard. Having said that, there will be a need to procure raw materials at international FOB prices to be able to compete with China and other manufacturing hubs. In fact, it is not the wire

industry which is non-competitive with regard to cost but the higher prices determined by the steel industry create inconveniences.

WCI: What are the industry's expectations from the government in the creation of an ecosystem that could enable the industry to become more competitive?

NS: What is required is that, for any business which is exporting any wire or wire product from the country, the prices of the raw materials should be made available at international FOB prices. What could be the mechanism to be put into place? I don't discern myself to be competent to recommend any sure-shot mechanism which will work. It's very simple. The wire manufacturing industry wishes for a level-playing field which can be achieved only if the mentioned parameter is fulfilled. It will also facilitate the growth intheexportsofwiresandwireproducts.

WCI: What will be your message for your fellow industry players and manufacturers to deal with the present challenges?

NS: Undoubtedly, the Indianwire industrycannotutilizethe full capacity of the wires domestically, which exists. Thus, there is a certain need to increase the export share of the industry. Though it is not implied thattheentirespectrumof industry players should export, it holds true for those niche playerswhofocusonservicecapabilitiesand productquality. Suchplayersshould focusonincreasing theirexportshare. In general, the profit margins are dismally low and it's very difficult foreveryone to survive. If things continue like this, I foreseeashake-outhappening.

Thus, it also means that we have to build up our product quality, enhancecustomerservices, and be morecompetitive in manufacturing which is economical orcost-efficient. This will be better for the customers as well as for the respective industry players in terms of services, and quality, which will bring in different opportunities to explore newer markets. That'sthewaytogo!

WCI: How can cost optimization be attained in the industry?

NS: With respect to my outlook on cost-efficiency, I would like to emphasize the importance of advanced technologies and integrationof automation in theprocesseswhich help in achieving cost-efficiency, reducing rejects, and enhancing product quality. These should be the fundamental transformations.

In today's day and age, in order to ensure excellent services, businesses need to keep pace with the technologies and digitalize theiroperations. This is definitely needed toachieve optimumcustomersatisfaction. If therequiredservicescan be on a real-time basis, it will further enhance customer delight. Thus, technology, both in terms of manufacturing operations andservicesisofparamountimportance.

It will not only enable the user to compare several conductors simultaneously from an extensive conductor library but also provides line loss and emission reduction outputs which can be shared with their team members focusedonsustainabilityandfinancialgoals.

Further, India is aiming for a non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity of 500 GW by 2030. This will require connecting the areas with high RE potential to ISTS (Inter–State Transmission System) so that the power generated could beevacuated tothe load centres. Wire & Cable India: Could you present a brief overview of Allied Engineering Works Pvt. Ltd. (AEW) along with its key milestones?

Ashutosh Goel: Established in 1988 by Mr. RP Goel, Allied Engineering Works has been manufacturing cables and meterssince2006and 2001 respectively. Today,wehavethree plants in Delhi. The new plant, where the cable business has justbeenshifted, isagreenfieldplantthatstarted in2020.We areproducing acompleterangeof LTpower& control cables, signaling cables, welding cables, solarcables and otherwires &cables.WehavealltherequisiteBIScertificationsavailable. Our lab is NABLcertified. Wealso have IATF certification for automotive cables. Currently, we are supplying pan-India to all the major distribution utilities, transmission and generation utilities. Apart from that, we are RDSO-approved bulk suppliersof signalingcables.Wesupplyourautomotivewires and wiring harness to major automotive OEMs like Minda IndustriesandMothersonSumiSystems.

WCI: Please shed some light on your product portfolio specifically for the wire & cable sector, USPs, market footprint and clientele.

AG: We manufacture wide range of LT cables like Power & Control, AB Cables, Specialty Cables etc. Our niche remains within the mobility sectorwherein we supply to railways and

automotive and are working very closely with avionic sector where we are working with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). We are manufacturing high performance battery cables, wiring harness and wire assemblies, specialty cables like sensor cables, anti-capillary wires, and actuator assemblies. We are producing a lot of innovative high reliability products for import substitution. We have in-house DSIR-recognized R&D center for product development for bringing innovative solutions to meet and exceedourclient'srequirements.

Within Power Sector, we are working with all the major government utilities and PSUs like NTPC, Powergrid, EESL, MECONetcand lotof prestigiousEPCplayerslikeL&T, Bajaj, Techno,GMR,Jaksontonameafew.

WCI: Describe the infrastructure and machinery installed at your facility. How do you go the extra mile to ensure the quality in your products?

AG: We have a completely backward integrated plant having all the state-of-the-art equipment. We have rod breakdown, 16 wires multi-wire drawing machine and bunchers from Niehoff, Germany. We also have best-of-class extruders from Supermac and other equipment like anti-torsion laying etc. We have the latest equipment in place so we can process almost8-10tonnesof copperintofinewireeveryday.Wehave a very solid infrastructure to cater to any product mix and volumemix.

Product quality is a virtue of three major elements - man, machine and material. The machines which we have put are thebest-of-classsowecanachieveanykindof accuraciesand any kind of product specification which is critical. The manpower available with us is experienced from IIT KharagpurandIITDelhi.Weemployalmost600peopleanda hundred engineers in our company. There is an adequate depth in the manpower in termsof experienceand exposure. As faras materials are concerned, we are buying them from a very reputable pool of vendors. We purchase polymers from reputed manufacturers like Shriram, KLJ and Kkalpana Industries (India) Ltd. (presently known as Ddev Plastiks Industries). We buy copper and aluminium from Hindalco, Nalcoand followthestandard QAP. This is howwe have been abletodelivertherightproductquality.

Cable is a very competitive product. One has to walk a tightrope for the right product quality and pricing. We have been able to achieve it for almost 15 years now. And, we are veryparticularaboutmakingperfectproductinthemarket.

WCI: What have you been doing to foster innovation and R&D at your workplace? Is there any new product you are going to introduce in near future?

AG: With R&D, we are introducing newer processes into manufacturing and combining them with the conventional processes by which we are able to deliver a unique product.

We haveadded vertical molding along withourconventional extrusion processes. Thereby, we are able to deliver certain assemblies using ultrasonic welding, which were previously done through the soldering process or crimping process. We are using innovative processes by which product performance and longevity have enhanced significantly. We have also mixed a lot of materials and tried new materials and applications by which we are able to provide a large application to the same product whereby we are able to deliver into moresectorsandmoreutilities.

Thereareafewfocussectorslikeelectricvehicleandmobility. We are manufacturing a lot of products that caters to either the safety part of the EV such as sensor cables and anticapillarywiresorperformancelikechargingcablesetc. There is a big shift in automotive sector and we want to lead that changewithinnovationandefficiency.Aswegoalong,wewill try to stay ahead of market requirements and keep developingproductsaccordingly.

WCI: A few years ago, AEW set up an advanced facility with collaborative funding from the Ministry of Heavy Industry. Tell us more about the project.

AG: The project with the Ministry of Heavy Industries was targeted for engineering the latest technologies in cable manufacturing. It was done with the objective of import substitution for specialty cables. We have been able to achieve success in developing such products for automotive and power sector. Our initiatives are targeted for developmentof high-performancehighreliabilityproducts.

WCI: Kindly elaborate on some of the industry 4.0 initiatives taken by your company.

AG: The types of equipment we have are fully automatic PLC driven. We have initiated an automated MIS system having comprehensive dashboard on production land scape of the factory. We can monitor our inventory, production, equipment health and energy using ouradvanced MIS system. We ensure that the energy consumed per unit of the cable is constantly reduced by which we can achieve both price reduction and delivery of energy efficiency in the manufacturing process. By installing new equipment and integrating it on a common platform using automation, we have been abletoachievethat.

WCI: Moving ahead, what is your business roadmap?

AG: We are always pursuing quality over quantity and so we target only with sustainable approach. In the last year, we havenotseenanygrowthbecauseof theCOVID-19pandemic and the market situation, but this year due to various government schemes like RDSS and our intervention into new sector and innovative products, we project about 50% growth in our revenue in the cable segment. Furtherwe shall beableto25-30%year-on-yeargrowth becauseof ourcurrent initiatives.

WCI: Share your outlook on the wire & cable sector. What kind of market trends do you expect in the coming year?

AG: We definitely believe that there is a major shift in the client's perspective towards the wire & cable segment. Today, there is an increased requirement for quality and performance. I believe that the wire & cable industry would have to address that and, gear up to achieve the ever-increasing aspirations of the customers in those terms. While I believe that sectors like solar, EV and battery storage are going to completely change the landscape of energy generation and consumption and the wire & cable industry has a huge opportunity, it depends on us how we make the most of it by delivering quality products.

There would always be challenges pertaining to market conditions and policy framework. In India, we have a welldefined product specification and a fairly diversified vendor or equipment ecosystem available. We all have to ensure that we are able to collectively reach out to the market to deliver high quality standards with international benchmark. AtAllied Engineering Works, westrivetocarve our niche with our spirit of delivering quality and performance.

WCI:Anythingelsethatyouwishtoaddtotheinteraction?

AG: We would like to touch upon the associated product, which is our smart metering domain. We believe that by the advent of smart metering in the market, the whole power distribution sector would see a complete makeover. With smart metering, thewholepowersectorwould undergo huge transformation and thereby even the wire & cable sector would see a lot of requirements for new types of products. There is no better time to make our best contribution to createworldclassinfrastructureforIndia.

JMW India Eyes Turnover of INR 2000 Crore; Plans to Introduce IPO Soon

MW India Private Limited is a

manufacturer and supplier of copper & copper products. With state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities located at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan the company produces a wide range of products including oxygen free copper rod, copper wire, bus bars, strips, Signaling cables, and insulated conductors. In the future, JMW India has plans to launch an IPO and utilize those funds to put up a HT cable manufacturing unit. Wire & Cable India recently interacted with Mr. Manoj Kumar Jain, Director, JMW India Private Limited to know more about the company's recent developments and business roadmap.

Wire & Cable India: To start our interaction, could you please give us a glimpse of the business story of JMW India and the significant milestones so far?

Manoj Kumar Jain: In 1980, the founder of the company, Mr. Sushil Kumar Jain, moved from a small village in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi to start his career. He began with a small wire drawing unit and gradually added more products to his portfolio. As a strategic backward integration,

he put up a melting furnace & rolling mill and started producing wire bars & wire rods. Thereafter, in 2005, when I joined the business, a unit with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes per annum, was established in Jammu for producing oxygen-free copper wire rods with upward-casting technology. It was a new technology introduced to India and ours was one of the first such plants in India.

In 2011, we put up another unit in Bhiwadi for manufacturing new products like busbars, strips and paper-covered copper strips. The state-of-the-art unit is spread across an area of 12,000 square meters and has a built-up area of around one lakh square feet.

In 2017, we added cables to our portfolio and started manufacturing aerial bunched cables, signaling cables, and power cables. Indian Railways is one of our important clients for such products. We have four verticals - cables, strips (which are being used in switchgear, industries, and automobiles), papercovered strips (which go into the transformer industries), and wire rods (which again is an important raw material for cable manufacturers). In 2022, we achieved a turnover of INR 1000 crores. With employee strength of more than 300 people, we have technical experts to serve our customers in a better manner.

WCI: Please describe the manufacturing capabilities of the Company and also chart an overview of the infrastructure of your facility.

MJ: For over 25 years, our company has been an industry leader in manufacturing, utilizing state-of-theart facilities and the latest technology to produce high-quality products quickly. With a warehouse and manufacturing line, we are easily able to fulfill large orders, and an expansive inventory of the latest technology enables us to guarantee that our products meet the highest standards.

Furthermore, our capacity has seen constant growth and we are in the process of renovating our facility to increase our manufacturing capabilities; thus, demonstrating our commitment to providing our customers with the best possible service.

We have the latest machines and technologies for all our products and that is one of the added advantages. The technology is European, but the machines are imported from China. We have been using the imported machines since 2005 and we are absolutely satisfied with the quality and performance. We keep on improving our production facility so that we are able to enhance our quality and production capacity. JMW is a good combination of man, machine, and material.

WCI: Has there been any expansion or are there any plans to expand your manufacturing capacity in the near future?

MJ: There is an expansion plan for a few products like copper foils, coils, and contact wire. It will help us to serve our customers better because the ones who are manufacturing HT cables need copper foils. As we are already serving them through wire rods and wires, we decided to have this added product in our portfolio. It'll help us to get better value addition for the company. The same is with the contact wire.

We are in the process of acquiring another land for a separate unit for cables in North India so that we can have more product lines to penetrate the market. We have plans to launch an IPO and utilize those funds to put up the plant. However, before that, we want to reach a turnover of at least INR 2000 crore and a profit of around INR 50 crore and we are currently streamlining our business to achieve that.

All these developments will take three to four years. The copper business

requires a lot of investments. You have to consolidate yourself and be financially strong before taking such a step. We are at the conceptualization stage and would make our move as per the market.

WCI: Having expertise in the manufacturing and supply of copper and copper products; what factors enable the production of high-quality copper products?

MJ: We are proud to stand as one of the leading producers and suppliers of copper and copper products in India today. Our company has developed an innovative and cutting-edge production process that enables us to manufacture and provide the highest quality of copper and copper products. At the foundation of our success is our commitment to innovation and technology in the production process. We have a separate quality team, which is particularly dedicated to ensuring excellence in our products. We also have a research and development team, which is continuously working on raw material, machine and processes to find out the better ways and better practices to get better quality. On top of that, we are continuously in touch with our customers and regularly visit them to help us improve through their feedback. From spectrometers to oxygen analyzers, we have a dedicated lab with all kinds of testing equipment. We have SOPs for all the processes and the intervals of testing.

WCI: What are the different markets you serve with your product range? What are your plans with respect to expansion to newer markets?

MJ: As of now, we are a leading player in the domestic market, especially in North India. Being located in the Bhiwadi, the biggest industrial area of North India near Delhi, we cater to various cable manufacturers due to our proximity. From here, one can cover the entire northern and western

parts of India. Also, there are a lot of freight corridors coming up which will enable us to export in the future.

We are serving a wide range of products for the commercial, industrial, and residential segments and catering to different markets including private sectors, government

bodies, consumable sectors, local state bodies, etc.

WCI: Share your views with regard to the quality of the recycled copper which is there in the market.

MJ: The quality of recycled copper, especially the FRHC copper, which is being produced through the CCR line,

is at par with the ETP copper rod. If you go by the ASTM B49 standard, it matches all the parameters besides being cost-effective. However, with recycled copper, there are a few challenges in terms of GST laws. If the needs are addressed by the government, the metal scrap recycling industry will grow exponentially.

Wire & Cable India recently interacted with Mr. Orhan Özbaran, General Manager, Domeks Makine A.S., and Mr. Rajneesh Nagrath, Indian Partner of Domeks Makine, wherein they presented an overview of Domeks Makine, the key strengths, their presence in the Indian market, and the way ahead.

Wire & Cable India: At the outset, please present an overview of Domeks Makine.

Orhan Özbaran: We, at Domeks Makine, are majorly focused on two major applications – automatic coiling line (including packaging line for coil applications) and compounding line, to serve the different needs of our customers. In addition, we are always prepared to redraw our model in line with our vision to cater to the diverse needs of our customers.

With regard to the compounding line, which is mostly concentrated in the cable industry, we are concerned with the production of PVC compounds as well as cable components like fillers, sheaths, insulation, and raving, gasket compounds. have established a distinct venture for the production of the HFFR compounding line.

WCI: Tell us about the strengths of your company. How do your technology and machines have an edge over the competitors?

OÖ: Domeks Makine launched a machine called Quadromatik Series for the 'Coil and Spool' segment. Around 12 years ago, there was no such machine which could take care of both the coiling and spooling applications simultaneously. We combined these two diverse applications in one single line.

Presently, we are focusing on the Speedmatik coiling line, especially for building wires and cables all over the world. So far, the maximum speed for the coil line was about six-seven coils per minute for a 100-meter cable length. With our new project, we can improve this volume up to eight-nine coils per minute. Moreover, this line can be worked with the extruder directly. We have amassed extensive experience working on coiling lines. Further, another key strength of Domeks is that our team is cognizant of the manufacturing environments and cable production behavior. Thus, we are quite well-versed in the diverse needs of the cable industry due to which we can develop specialized products for different applications and the specific needs of the customers.

WCI: [To Mr. Rajneesh Nagrath]: Being Domeks' partner for the Indian market, tell us about your partnership with the firm.

Rajneesh Nagrath: We've been associated with Domeks Makine since 2006 and it has been a great experience working with the firm. We have established a cordial association with Domeks. Their after-sales-services are excellent. Also, the majority of the customers are highly satisfied with the machines as well as the quality of services by Domeks. In addition, I would like to add that we are assured of getting more business opportunities in India.

WCI: Tell us about the Company's presence in the Indian market.

OÖ: We are quite excited about the growth opportunities in the Indian market. It was in 2006 that we forayed into the Indian market. At present, we have established considerable production lines and we have more than 35 machines operating in the region. Thus, India has always been quite a significant market for Domeks. We are mindful of considerations like energy consumption and machine efficiency for increasing competitiveness to serve our customers in a better way.

RN: Our valued customers include Polycab India, RR Kabel, KEI Industries, Universal Cables, Shakun Polymers, Kkalpana Industries, Payal Petrochem, Panasonic, HFCL, HTL, and so on. I would further say that we are optimistic that our number of customers will keep growing. We would now like to focus on expanding our footprint in the country.

WCI: Tell us about your manufacturing facilities and the capabilities of the Company.

OÖ: In 2015, we shifted our facility to the Tekirdağ region which is around 100 kilometers away from Istanbul, Turkey. The facility spans 20,000 sqm for the manufacturing assembly, and testing units and, the joining HDOplast. We are also a compound producer for the HDOplast site. Thus, year by year, we are looking forward to increasing the production capacities.

WCI: What is the future outlook of Domeks Makine in India? What kind of strategies are you going to espouse for the Indian market?

OÖ: In our understanding, the Indian cable industry is growing significantly on a yearly basis. In view of this, we could look for opportunities to establish an even stronger presence of Domeks by setting up a manufacturing base in the country. For instance, three years ago, we achieved the production of a fully-automated line with a capacity of about seven coils per minute. Thus, we assess the requirements in the Indian market

after which we work on bringing distinct solutions keeping in mind the needs and applications of our customers. RN: In our understanding, India is going to be the next manufacturing hub for the wire and cable industry. In the next few years, it is projected that the Indian players would be the prominent suppliers for the wire and cable industry globally. As a matter of fact, a few of our customers have penetrated the European and the US markets where the quality has been well accepted. Thus, there is a great scope for expansion in the wire and cable industry. In particular, in the solar cables segment, there would be a great growth potential driven by the Government of India's initiatives. Thus, there is a great future ahead in the segment about which we are quite enthused.

WCI: Please talk about the future plans of the company.

OÖ: As I mentioned, we have a new project for the coiling line. Our main goal for this project is to present excellent machinery with respect to building wire applications. For instance, for the building wires and cables, most of the extrusion lines' speed is up to a thousand meters per minute. This means that for one line, you would need approximately two pointing lines for equalizing the speed. However, if you increase the speed up to a thousand meters per meter or near this volume, we can match the speed of the coiling line with the exclusion line. This means that even if are working with offline operation or inline operation that gives our customers good results.

Furthermore, I would like to emphasize our expertise in compounding lines. In the next year, we will start for the X HFFR compound which will be especially used for the solar cables. Later on, we would start executive production as a machinery manufacturer. These are the major future plans and strategies for Domeks which we aspire to bring to fruition!

Payal Group: Taking the Steady Road to Bring Innovations for Wire & Cable Industry

Payal Group, started in 1986,

has the single largest integrated manufacturing plant for primary & secondary plasticizers in Dahej (Gujarat). In the chlorinated segment, the group is among the leading manufacturers in India. With its technologically advanced manufacturing facilities at Dahej & Daman, Payal Group produces a wide array of products to meet all requirements of the wire & cable industry, amongst others. Wire & Cable India interviewed Mr. Nikhil Chandra Gupta, Managing Director & CEO, Payal Group, wherein he presents a detailed outline of their business overview, key strengths, manufacturing capabilities, recent developments, and the way ahead.

Wire & Cable India: To begin with, could you please give us a walkthrough of the business journey of Payal Group? Talk about the crucial milestones and the specializations.

NCG: Payal Group was started by Mr. Rajender Prashad Gupta in 1986 with the production of PVC compounds. This was a backward integration of the family business where the extended family was already manufacturing wires & cables. Hence, our

association with the wire & cable industry goes back as long as 5 decades. We started manufacturing in Delhi with a mere capacity of only 100 MT of PVC compounds which were being produced for in-house consumption, followed by the manufacturing of plasticizers, primarily DOP and DBP. In 1998, the Group commenced production in Daman, with a monthly production capacity of 400 MT.

Over the years, Payal Group has started the manufacturing of multiple plasticizers. In 2012, our new plant was set up in Dahej which was the single largest facility in India for primary and secondary plasticizers, with a production capacity of –180,000 MT of plasticizers; 35,000 MT for chlorinated paraffins; and 6000 tons of PVC compounds. In the last two decades, Payal Group has grown from a humble turnover of INR 35 crore to a top-line of more than INR 1500 crore in 2022. With time, the Company has become the 2nd largest player in the country for manufacturing plasticizers having not only general-purpose grades but specialized grades catering to vast customer demand, especially in the wire & cable segment. Around 10 years ago, we collaborated with ExxonMobil to produce DINP in India which is a REACH-compliant product and specialized plasticizer used in the wire & cable industry.

Recently, we've undertaken capacity expansion in the chlorinated paraffins paraffin (CP) plant (the product which is used as a fire-retardant) increasing our capacity to 70,000 tons annually, which makes us India's largest single-location facility for CP. Today, we are the biggest supplier of plasticizers to the top cable companies in India, namely, Havells, RR Kabel, Polycab, Finolex, and KEI Industries. We've become one of the largest manufacturing companies for primary, secondary & specialty plasticizers, having multiple plants

across India, and exporting products to 26+ countries. We are constantly focusing on innovation, high-quality customized products, and customer services. Payal Group has established 30 percent market share in the plasticizers segment; 2000+ satisfied customers in India & overseas; 100+ world-class customized quality products; and over 20 active global channel partners.

WCI: Shed some light on the unique strengths of the product range with a particular focus on your solutions for the wire & cable segment. Are there any plans to diversify your portfolio in the immediate future?

NCG: Payal Group manufactures more than 20 grades of plasticizers catering to the needs of multiple industries from wire & cable, footwear, artificial leather, automotive, underbody coating, etc. Over the years, we have specialized the chlorinated paraffin production, catering to the customized needs of the industry. We're able to make tailor-made products as per customer demand; this has resulted in having more than 200+ grades of chlorinated paraffins to achieve desired properties for the wire & cable industry for their end products.

Most of our key products are REACHcompliant, namely, DINP, DIDP, DPHP, DOA, TOTP, etc. The DOA we manufacture, features flexibility at low temperatures, has resistance to weathering and shows good stability to heat. We produce some specialized chlorinated paraffin grades which make the products flame retardant.

Future products:

We've been adding value to safeguard our environment and making biobased plasticizers for a safe and sustainable future. We are planning to introduce high molecular-weight plasticizers for high-performance wires and cables with low migration and better performance. In the future,

we would continue to innovate and bring more products that are environmentally friendly and sustainable besides being cost-effective for the customers in the plasticizers and the chlorinated paraffin segment.

WCI: Since the Company is a notable provider of a range of plasticizers and other different chemicals, kindly touch upon your strategies for serving the needs of the wire & cable industry.

The group has multi-locational regional sales offices all over India, with a corporate office in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The commissioning of operations at the new plant and the ongoing expansions in Dahej will increase the production capacity to 350,000 MT per annum. changing demands, hence increasing the overall standard of the industry. The company is also coming up with a state-of-the-art R&D centre at the Dahej plant catering primarily to the wire & cable segment.

A highly experienced team helps us achieve several business-centric goals like successful new product launches, effective product awareness, and quality troubleshooting. WCI: Please outline the current strategic priorities and focus areas for the Company. Has there been any recent development at Payal Group that you would like to talk about?

NCG: The overall strategy of the company is to stay focused on our existing customers' needs which are primarily in the wires and cables segment as more than 40 percent of our business comes from the wire and cable industry. We are already manufacturing two of the major products for the industry which are plasticizers and chlorinated paraffin.

While we continuously innovate newer, better plasticizers & grades in chlorinated paraffin, we also intend to develop specialized additives & chemicals and cater to the same industry. As mentioned earlier, with

our upcoming project in Southern India, our goal is to get closer to our customers and deliver the best quality sustainable products. We're also building an independent technology centre for new product development.

RR Kabel to Launch IPO, Expects to File Papers with Sebi in May 2023

Leadingwire&cablemanufacturerRRKabelisexpected to launch its initial public offering (IPO) in the third quarter of 2023-24. According to the reports, the company would file preliminary papers with market regulator SEBI in Maynextyear.

Talking to a leading news agency, Mr. Shreegopal Kabra, MD & Group President, RR Global revealed that the company is planning for its IPO around October-November of2024,whichwouldbesubjecttothemarketconditions.

He further said that the IPO papers would be filed after the company’s balance sheet for FY 2022-23 is prepared. Mr. Kabra added that the company would be investing around INR 1,000 crore as CapEx in the next three years to enhanceitscapacity.

By the end of FY 2026, RR Kabel has ambitious plans to reach a turnover of INR 11,000 crore, which is almost double the current number. The company eyes growth of 25

The new plant replaces an aging, 40-year-old facility and will increase copperrodproductionbyatleast10percentannually.

Leoni has undertaken major expansion at its automotive cables location in Cuauhtémoc, Mexico. To celebrate this expansion, the cable manufacturer organised an event at which many guests marked their presence, including the Governor of Chihuahua, Maria Eugenia Campos, the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, Maria Angelica Granados, the Local Deputy Saul Mireles and the Deputy MayorofCuauhtémoc,EliasHumbertoPerez.

Leoni Cable, which started its presence in Mexico in 1998, has become an important player in the automotive cables business in North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The automotive cables’ portfolio ranges from simple single-core cables to complex multi-core cables for driver assistance systems and data cables for autonomous driving. Additionally, Leoni has added charging and high voltage cables for electro mobility applications which are in hugedemand.

In 2020, the phase I of a project called EMOMEX (E-Mobility Mexico) was concluded. It entailed an investment of USD 27 million in equipment and machines for the design, development and production of high-voltage cables and

cables for charging systems. In 2022, the expansion of the Mexicanfacilitywasannounced.

electrification of the North of Alvheim (NOA) and KraflaoffshorefieldsintheNOAKAareaintheNorthSea

The order has a value for NKT of approx EUR 155m (approx. EUR 125m in std. metal prices) and has been awarded by Equinor Energy AS on behalf of NOA Krafla Power from Shore JV and its owners Aker BP, Lotos and Equinor.

The project comprises design, manufacturing and installation by the cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria of more than 255 kilometres of 145kV high-voltage AC power cables. The project includes both on- and offshore installation and enables full electrification of the fields. NOAKA consists of the NOA, Fulla and Krafla licence groups, and the area is locatedbetweenAlvheimandOsebergintheNorthSea.

NKT President and CEO Mr. Alexander Kara says, “With

this order, we continue our long-term collaboration with Equinor to ensure the electrification of the offshore industry in Norway. When commissioned, our power cable solution willhelpcutemissionsontheNorwegiancontinentalshelf.”

The project comprises an infield cable connecting two main platforms before a joint export cable will connect the fields to the onshore power grid at the Børdalen transformer station located east of Bergen, Norway. The power cables will be manufactured in Karlskrona, Sweden, with productionstartin2024andwithcommissioningin2026.

By sourcing the power cables from the Karlskrona plant the carbon footprint of the cable project is kept at a minimum as it is running entirely on renewable electricity and is strategically located close to the North Sea. Furthermore, NKT will install the power cables using highly fuel-efficient NKT Victoria. n

Sumitomo Electric Secures Contract to Supply 525-kV HVDC Submarine Cable for NeuConnect Interconnector

has been awarded a contract from the Prysmian Group to supply 150 km of HVDC submarine cable for NeuConnect Interconnector, a 1.4 GW power interconnection project betweenUKandGermany.

The NeuConnect Interconnector is a private project financed and developed by a group of international investors including Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, and Kansai Electric Power.

Sumitomo Electric has been nominated as subcontractor to supply a section of HVDC Mass Impregnated cable to Prysmian PowerLink, who secured the main contract with NeuConnect for the turn-key design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning of a 725 kilometer submarine interconnector that will directly link the German and UK

electricity grids for the first time. The submarine cable, which forms part of the offshore cable route between the two countries, will be manufactured at Sumitomo’sOsakaWorksinJapan.

This is the Company’s sixth European

HVDC power link project after MON. ITA (Montenegro-Italy), NEMO (UKBelgium), A-Nord HVDC project (Germany), Kontek (GermanyDenmark) and Greenlink (IrelandGB). groundwork for improving the eco-balance of power cables. In a joint breakthrough development project, the two companies have developed a material with recycled aluminum content for the production of aluminum rod used inelectricalcables.

Trimet and Nexans have developed a new product able to meet the high technical requirements on the mechanical

properties and conductivity of the alloy while reducing the product’s carbon footprint. Until now, power cables have been manufactured exclusively on the basis of primary aluminum.

The collaborative project between Nexans and Trimet aimed to coordinate optimized raw material supply and innovative material development. Nexans has refined the sorting of aluminum scrap at its production sites in Europe through RecyCâbles, a Nexans-Suez joint venture, while

The information was shared Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 6 during the launch of seventh Vande Bharat Express. microduct cables to include an 864f cable. Sirocco HD cables provide world record diameters and fibre densities for blown microduct cables. The new cable boasts 864 fibres in a diameter of 11.0mm, providing a fibre density of 9.1fibrespermm2,andisinstallableintoa13mmduct.

Sirocco HD microduct cables utilize Prysmian’s BendBright-A2 200µm single-mode (ITU-T G.657.D, G.657.A2) bend insensitive fibre, providing a solution that is ready for evolved systems, totally compatible with any already-installed legacy G652 fibre, and truly future-proof.

H, in partnership with ORE Catapult on behalf of the 2Floating Offshore Wind Centre of Excellence, has formulated a qualification framework for floating offshore winddynamicinter-arraycablesystems.

The framework will support a dynamic cable systems technology development and qualification programme, introduced by the Floating Offshore Wind Centre of Excellence at the Floating Wind 2022 Conference in Aberdeen, Scotland. The scope of the framework includes dynamic power cables (up to 132kV), ancillary components such as electrical quick connectors, bend restrictors, and cableprotectionsystems.

2H is using its experience with the mechanical and electrical qualification requirements from International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and other best industry practices from API, ISO, and DNV in formulating a structured framework. The output of this programme will benefit new companies entering the UK supply chain, established cable vendors, ancillary equipment vendors and test houses by providing clear guidance on the steps required to qualify inter-array power cable components for floating windapplications.

India Saves around USD 4 Billion in Fuel Costs through Solar Generation, says Report

Solar generation in India avoided the need for 19.4 million tonnes of coal which would have further stressed an already strained domestic supply.

According to a recently released report by a global

thinktank for energy Ember, India has saved around USD 4.2 billion in fuel costs through solar generation in the first half of 2022 and 19.4 million tonnes of coal. The report further stated that the contribution of solar generation in China, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand - the seven key Asian countries – avoided potential fossil fuel costs of almost USD 34 billion from JanuarytoJune2022.

The report further suggests that the majority of the estimated USD 34 billion savings are in China, where solar contributed to 5 percent of the total electricity demand. The country was able to avoid around USD 21 billion in additional coal and gas imports during the period. Similarly, Japan and Vietnam avoided USD 5.6 billion and USD 1.7

billion fossil fuel costs respectively. While the growth in solar was slower in Thailand and the Philippines, the avoidedfuelcostwasstillnotable. n

L&T will execute projects for the development of the power distribution sector under the RDSS Scheme.

L&T Construction, the construction division of Larsen &

Toubro Ltd. (L&T), has won multiple projects in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) in the Indian andoverseasmarket,accordingtomediareports.

The construction company informed that the renewables division of the business received an EPC order to establish a 90MW floating solar PV plant at the Omkareshwar dam reservoir,KhandwadistrictinMadhyaPradesh.

Also, L&T will execute projects for the power distribution sector in western Uttar Pradesh under the Revamped Reforms-Linked Distribution Scheme (RDSS), as per the statement. The scope of these orders includes asset mappingusingGeospatialInformationSystem(GIS).

In the overseas market, the T&D business has received an order for establishing 400kV and 225kV transmission lines in North Africa. Additionally, the Company has also secured an order for building a 132kV substation in the coastal town ofBintuluinSarawak,Malaysia. n

transmission system operator Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE) to provide inspection, maintenance and repair services for the submarine export power cable links connecting the three offshore wind farms near the French coast of Normandy that will be linked to the mainland using Prysmian cables. The wind farms at St. Nazaire, Fécamp and Calvados are among the largest commercial wind farms ever built in France, and their seamless functioning is essential to achievingFrance'senergytransitiongoals.

The maintenance services provided by Prysmian will reduce the length of any possible supply disruption arising from a power outage of the wind farms, thus assuring a continuous flow of renewable energy to French homes and businesses. The agreement will last 15 years and enters into effect immediately at the already-completed link of St. Nazaire. It will be then extended to the other two links as soonastheyenterintooperation.

The contract will cover the three High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) 220 kV three-core submarine cables with XLPE insulation and single-wire armouring of the Fécamp
