Fundraiser ongoing for shark attack victim More than $30,000 has been donated to a fundraising page set up to support the family of 14-year-old Samuel Nai, who was attacked by a shark while fishing with his friends on Thursday Island last weekend.
Family member Yessie Mosby said Samuel was in a critical condition in Townsville and may be moved to Brisbane. “While Samuel fights to recover, his family is facing overwhelming emotional and
financial challenges,” he said. He said the funds raised would help to cover: • Medical expenses • Travel and accommodation costs for Samuel’s family to be by his side • Household and living
expenses while his parents take time off work • Future recovery needs “Thank you for your compassion, prayers and support during this difficult time,” Yessie said. The Torres Strait has
experienced more than 60 shark attacks since 1855, most of which have been attributed to tiger sharks. Questions have been asked about which authorities were responsible for mitigating shark attacks in the north, where
there were no nets or baits, as in other parts of the State. Torres Shire Council said they were deeply concerned about the attack, which occurred in the early evening on Cook Esplanade. Story continued on PAGE 3 N
