BY CHRISTINE HOWES Premier David Crisafulli and Member for Cook David Kempton visited several islands in Zenadth Kes last week. The visit was an opportunity to have “broad-ranging conversation” about issues of concern in the Torres Strait
with locals on Horn, Thursday, Saibai and Mer islands. They also met with the Mayors, Cr Elsie Seriat, Cr Phillemon Mosby and Cr Robert PoiPoi, and Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Chairperson George Nona. As part of their visit, they took a walk around the Waiben CEQ supermarket, spoke with local border and quarantine
officials on Saibai and did a tour of Mer’s health facilities. “Last week we got the opportunity to spend more time in this beautiful part of the state,” Premier Crisafulli said. “Local member David Kempton and I were able to listen directly to communities, so our Government can deliver what matters to this region.
“It’s also great to hear firsthand that all three councils are working together to better their communities and boost tourism opportunities.” Mr Kempton said it was very much a listening expedition by the Premier. “He didn’t go up there to make any grand announcements or make any big promises,” he said.
“Whilst up there we talked about the cost of living, issues around the cost of constructing houses, health, transport is a massive issue, together with the cost of transport and the on-flow [that has] into housing and cost of living, and so on.”
