Health congress meets on Waiben The Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives (CATSINaM) Regional Congress 2025 was held on Waiben last week. CATSINaM is the national peak body representing and advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses, midwives and students. The Congress invited healthcare professionals, researchers and academics, policy makers and government representatives, and community and advocacy organisations to join their members from last Tuesday to Friday. A packed program of speakers and workshops included a meet-and-greet BBQ, keynote presentations, panels and cultural events. Speakers included international guest Alisi Vudiniabola from Fiji; Mayor Elsie Seriat as an advocate for health and community fitness; CATSINaM President Vanessa Browne, an experienced Nurse Practitioner focused on mental health services; Torres & Cape Hospital and Health Services (TCHHS) Chief Executive Rex O’Rourke as an advocate for health equity in Aboriginal communities; Chief Nursing Midwifery Officer Adjunct Professor Alison McMillan, an expert in health system reform and women’s health; Professor Doseena Fergie, an Indigenous health advocate, academic leader and nursing researcher with numerous accolades; and, local practitioners Sam and Yoko Mills, representing the Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives Indigenous Corporation.
