BY FLORA WARRIA History was made when the Qantaslink plane, Horn Island Ngurupai, made its maiden flight to Horn Island last week. The Dash 8 Q400 aircraft, which was delivered in 2013 and previously operated in Canada, was welcomed to the community with a naming ceremony and blessing.
Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Deputy Chairperson Elthies Kris said the newly named aircraft would bring national attention to the region. âIt tells the nation that we are seen, we are valued, and we are connected,â she said. âThe naming of this aircraft as Horn Island Ngurupai is deeply meaningful.
âTo see this aircraft in our skies will not only make us proud, it sends a message to future generations that our stories matter, our names matter, and our region is moving forward.â Qantaslink CEO Rachel Yangoyan offered her heartfelt gratitude and deepest respect to the Kaurareg Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (KNTAC), Traditional

Ms Yangoyan said their fleet of turboprop aircraft carried the name of regional Australia or community, and now Horn Island Ngurupai would visit many regional towns and cities. âIt will celebrate the proud history and partnership that we
have with this community and region, and I wish to express my deep gratitude to the Kaurareg people and the Torres Strait regional island communities for trusting us with this name and allowing us to do that,â she said.
