Wheels of Change: new bikes roll into Thursday Island for World Bicycle Day In a major win for community health, mobility, and sustainability, 100 new bicycles are rolling into Waiben, just in time for World Bicycle Day, thanks to a powerful grassroots initiative led

by Mobilise TI with significant support from Ports North Community Investment Fund.

The milestone follows the successful grant awarded to Mobilise TI in 2024, enabling the new program designed to boost active transport options and improve local mobility.

Ports North CEO Richard Stevenson said he was delighted to see their Community Investment Fund making a meaningful impact.

“Supporting initiatives that deliver long-term benefits for the communities and regions our ports serve is exactly what the Community Investment

Fund is about,” he said.

“We’re proud to help unlock opportunities, support sustainability, and build stronger, more connected communities.”

The initiative, championed by Mobilise TI founder Sarah Tedder and ambassador Mayor Elsie Seriat, was an innovative step toward improving active transport options for the island’s 3000 residents.

Over the past year, the community has worked together to refurbish and re-home dozens of second-hand bikes.

But this delivery, the largest yet, marked a turning point.

Waiben has a dedicated cycleway, making it ideal for biking, however, without a local bike shop or public transport, many families lacked suitable options for getting where they needed to go.

“They’ll connect families around the island and reduce barriers to education, healthcare, work, and community.”

She said she hoped this important support would inspire others.

A founding partner of Mobilise TI, Mayor Seriat, highlighted a rising number of cars on Thursday Island and said it didn’t make much sense.

“It feels like there

are more cars than people here, and traffic is becoming a serious problem,” she said.

“Encouraging our families to get outside for activities like cycling isn’t just enjoyable – it’s also essential for our health and wellbeing.

“It gives us all a chance to take time out for ourselves.”

Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Ros Bates commended Ports North and Mobilise TI for their involvement in the program.

“This is a wonderful, practical initiative, which will make a world of difference to people of all ages on Thursday Island,” Minister Bates said.

“Not only do Queensland’s ports play a significant role in our state’s economy, they also have a very important role in their local communities.”

Member for Cook David Kempton said improving mobility across the island would benefit everyone.

“The cost of buying and transporting bikes to TI can be quite expensive,” Mr Kempton said.

“Providing these bikes, and the training to maintain them, will not only enable locals to

get around the island, it will also help enhance their health, skills and independence, in an environmentally friendly way.”

The delivery brought 50 adult bikes, 50 children’s bikes, infant seats, and baskets, along with bike repair kits, stands, and spare parts – all essential to set up the “community bike hospital” with the essentials to ensure the bicycles could be maintained for the long term.

99 Bikes, which supplied the bikes and accessories, has generously funded one of their trained mechanics to assemble and provide hands-on maintenance training to build capacity for local resilience.

A project investigating Ancestral Remains and cultural objects from Australia, New Zealand and the broader Pacific in Russian collections is the focus of a visit by two Australian National University researchers this week.

Elena Govor and Hilary Howes are in the Endeavour and Torres Straits until Monday next week for repatriation consultations with communities.

They said they had found evidence that Russian museums hold Ancestral Remains of Kaurareg people and Ancestral Remains from Mabuyag and Saibai, as well as sketches and photographs of people from Cape York, Endeavour and Torres Straits.

“We’ve learned that two scientists visited the area in the early 1880s to make observations, collect cultural objects and remove Ancestral Remains,” Hilary said.

“Their collections were divided between museums in Russia and other countries.

“Some repatriations have already

taken place.

“In 2013 and 2014, Ancestral Remains removed by the German scientist Otto Finsch were returned to the Gudang people and the Goemulgal of Lag Mabuyag from the Charité University Hospital in Berlin.

“I was working at the Australian Embassy in Berlin at that time and helped facilitate these repatriations. It was a great honour to be involved.”

Elena said they were keen to speak to community members.

“The other scientist was a Russian, Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay,” she said.

“Earlier this year, Ancestral Remains he removed from the Rai Coast of Papua New Guinea were returned to their Traditional Owners from the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney.

“His great-grandnephew, Nikolay Miklouho-Maclay Junior, helped make that repatriation possible.”

They said they were working with Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council (GBK), who was supporting their consultations.

13YARN podcast series 13YARN has launched a Strong Minds, Strong Mob podcast series with the first episode featuring QLife.

The podcast series will consist of bringing in First Nations people from all walks of life to have yarns about many different topics and to capture experiences from guests.

In the first episode, a deadly and diverse LGBTQIA+SB group was brought together and yarn about personal experiences as well as the importance of having resources such as QLife and 13YARN available, the struggles we face or have faced, and what we do to take care of our Social and Emotional Wellbeing.

Other topics focused on are suicide and self-harm prevention.

There will be some great yarns around topics that can affect Social and Emotional Wellbeing, along with collaborations to promote support services that are available for all age and gender demographics.

The podcast series was launched on 17 May. Tune into 13YARN’s YouTube channel and follow on social media to keep up to date with the series.

Support to preserve Indigenous languages The State Government has opened applications for the Indigenous Languages Grants program, offering

$285,000 for a wide range of Queenslandbased initiatives to help preserve and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

Applicants were eligible for up to $15,000 each, with community organisations encouraged to apply for a range of cultural activities.

Eligible projects may include art, drama, music and film, Yarning Circles, audio recordings, workshops, signage, books, posters and brochures.

The grants support Closing the Gap Target 16, to achieve a sustained increase in the number and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages being spoken.

Queensland was once home to more than 100 Indigenous languages and dialects.

Today, around 50 are still spoken, but fewer than 20 are used as first languages.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Fiona Simpson said the Government was proud to support community projects which strengthened traditional languages.

“Amidst the United Nations’ Decade of Indigenous Languages, preserving, revitalising and promoting Queensland languages has never been more important – especially as we look ahead to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” she said.

The grants are co-funded by the Department of Education and the Department of Women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Multiculturalism.

National doors open for Zenadth Kes artists

First Nations artists across the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) have been encouraged to submit artworks for exhibit and sale at two of Australia’s primary Indigenous art events.

The 2025 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) is on 11–13 July and the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) from 7–10 August.

Gab Titui Cultural Centre, with the support of the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA), will showcase traditional and contemporary works to ensure the region’s artistic diversity, cultural heritage and visual storytelling are represented and celebrated.

TSRA Chairperson George Nona said the events were important national platforms for Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal artists to gain exposure, attract collectors and curators, and build sustainable careers.

“CIAF and DAAF aren’t just art fairs, they are opportunities for national recognition,” Mr Nona said.

“Each year, Gab Titui proudly supports artists to showcase their works and stand tall on a country-wide stage amongst their peers.

“Whilst yumi region may be remote, our art speaks volumes and has always attracted interest for its uniqueness and ability to share yumi stories and culture through paintings, carvings, weaving, printmaking and more.”

Gab Titui’s presence at CIAF and DAAF has grown.

In 2024, the TSRA proudly sponsored the CIAF People’s Choice Award for the first time.

“We’ll keep investing in initiatives that promote the region’s creative success,” Mr Nona said.

Artwork submissions are now open.

Gab Titui Cultural Centre staff are available to assist artists in preparing and delivering their works to the Centre.

First Nations fashion elevated A decade after designer and creative visionary Grace Lillian Lee established the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair’s (CIAF) fashion performance, the celebrated event will soar with a landmark collaboration between CIAF and First Nations Fashion + Design (FNFD) in July.

Earlier this month, Grace was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Design by the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), marking a major career achievement and as a celebration of her impact on design, fashion and community engagement.

“FNFD is thrilled to ignite its partnership with CIAF in a celebration of creativity and innovation,” Grace said.

“Together, we are embracing this new chapter dedicated to creating opportunities and pathways for designers to share their unique stories with the world.”

This year, CIAF’s Look & Listen fashion performances spotlight 12 First Nations designers influenced by professional development

workshops from FNFD. In the lead-up to CIAF, FNFD planned to deliver five mentoring and capacity-building workshops—both in person and online—covering concept and design development, sourcing fabrics, textile knowledge, pattern making and branding.

CIAF Fashion coordinator and curator of Look & Listen, Lynelle Flinders, said partnering with FNFD was a significant opportunity to build capacity and elevate the presentation and development of Indigenous fashion.

“CIAF, in collaboration with Grace Lillian Lee and FNFD, intends to elevate designers to a more advanced stage in their careers – to help expose them to larger markets and audiences,” Lynelle said.

This year’s Look & Listen performances – reimagined under Artistic Director Teho Ropeyarn – were to be presented as two distinct showcases.

‘Look’ invited audiences to engage with the visual power of six dynamic designers, including Sandra and Shara

Delaney, Robert Tommy Pau, Irene Robinson and Darlene Fell, Hope Vale Arts Centre, Felicity Chapman, and a guest collaboration.

‘Listen’ shifted the focus to storytelling, featuring collections

by Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre, Lisa Lui, and others whose work expresses intergenerational narratives and deep cultural meaning.

Grace’s journey began with CIAF in 2013, when she launched the fashion performance at the Ufla Upla Textile Conference.

Since then, her creative leadership and founding of FNFD – a national platform supporting Indigenous designers and models – have elevated Indigenous fashion to the global stage.

CIAF 2025 will run from Thursday 10 – Sunday 13 July 2025 at Tanks Arts Centre Look & Listen will be performed on Thursday 10 & Friday 11 July.

CEQ offers healthier start with bubs’ kai kai Remote store operator Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ) has reaffirmed its commitment to the health and well-being of children and families in remote communities, with a major update to its infant and toddler food range across all stores.

Driven by CEQ’s vision of Caring, Every Day, Always, the update followed a comprehensive review led by CEQ’s nutrition and buying teams, and prioritised by the CEQ Board, to ensure babies and young children had better access to healthier food options from their very first bites.

The updated range focused on nutritious, iron-rich, and lower-sugar options that support early development – such as meat-based meals, iron-fortified cereals, and vegetable-based meals – while reducing the shelf presence of products high in added sugars, such as sweetened custards and fruit-based purees.

CEQ Nutrition and Health Manager Melinda Hammond said the changes reflected CEQ’s ongoing dedication to improving health outcomes in remote Indigenous communities across North Queensland.

“A healthy start in life begins with good nutrition – and that’s something we take seriously,” Ms Hammond said.

“We know that early childhood nutrition lays the foundation for lifelong health, and our Board made it clear that supporting babies’ health and development is a top priority.

“These changes to our baby food range are about giving parents better options and cutting through the confusion on the shelves.”

CEQ’s review was also aligned with advocacy from the Food for Health Alliance, which continued to call for stronger national regulation and greater transparency in the labelling and formulation of infant and toddler foods.

With current Australian laws placing no limits on added sugars in baby and toddler food, CEQ’s review recognised as many as 72 per cent of products in this category didn’t meet international nutrition standards and many contained unhealthy sugars from fruit concentrates, purees, and syrups – despite often featuring ‘healthy’ imagery and claims.

“We’re making it easier for families to make healthier choices, and that includes making sure the most nutritious options are easier to find and more visible on our shelves,” CEQ Chief Executive Officer Michael Dykes said.

“This is just one of the many ways we’re putting our vision of Caring, Every Day, Always into practice – by listening to the evidence, prioritising community wellbeing, and supporting the health of the next generation.”

Health services equity commitment on show

BY ALF WILSON Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) held their first Health Equity Showcase event at Townsville’s Gill Park last week, allowing health services staff and community partners to show their commitment to health equity by joining together for First Nations People.

Townsville-based elder Francis Tapim said it was a success.

THHS covers one of the most geographically dispersed catchments, extending west to Richmond and Hughenden, north to Cardwell, south to Home Hill and east to Magnetic and Palm Islands.

Mr Tapim was a member of a health committee that provided input to a Health Advisory Board about

the needs of First Nations people in the region.

“This has all been about the health of our people,” he said.

“Issues such as the time they have to wait when going to the Emergency Department.

“There are many Torres Strait islanders amongst Indigenous people living in the region, and we also need more liaison officers so they can relate to

our patients, such as understanding culture and communicating in language.”

There was a mini tent city at the venue and the Wulgurukaba Walkabouts Dance Group and singer Trevor Prior performed.

One of the Wulgurukaba Walkabouts dancers was William Mabo, a grandson of the late and great Eddie Mabo.

THHS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Executive Director Amanda Cooms said the event was an opportunity to reflect on the progress being made in Closing the Gap, while deepening partnerships with First Nations communities.

“Health equity is about people, it’s about the right to live strong, healthy lives, to grow old with dignity, and to pass knowledge and culture to future generations,” she said.

“For millennia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived with strength, wisdom, and resilience on these lands.

“Yet, today, the disparities in healthcare, education, and economic opportunity mean that First Nations peoples are still fighting for basic human rights – the right to equitable healthcare, the right to thrive, and the right to be heard.”

Ms Cooms said the Health Equity Showcase provided a platform for meaningful consultation, feedback, and collaboration with First Nations communities about the Townsville HHS Health Equity Strategy.

Reconciliation Action Plan results more than ‘fairy floss’ The ongoing impact of Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs) across all walks of Australian life has been revealed in a new Reconciliation Australia (RA) report.

The 2024 RAP Impact Report has found the RAP program was not only numerically expanding, but many RAP organisations were deepening their impact through strong governance and accountability.

Reconciliation Australia CEO Karen Mundine said while she was pleased with these indicators of progress, they had to be sustained and built upon.

“There is always more work to be done,” she said.

“The continued economic and social relegation of First Nations people means it is essential that all Australians, particularly our RAP partners, commit to even greater efforts to achieve reconciliation, equity and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

Reconciliation Australia’s RAP program has worked with organisations in the corporate, cultural, educational, and sporting sectors to drive better reconciliation outcomes by providing organisations with a structured approach to advancing reconciliation.

The annual Impact Report was compiled from data reported by more than 2000

RAP organisations for the period from July 2023 – June 2024 and represented the cumulative impact of the RAP program’s benefits across the nation.

Findings from the 2024 RAP Impact Report included: • $4,812,163,387 ($4.8 billion) worth of goods and services were procured by RAP organisations from First Nationsowned businesses.

• 733 First Nations people sat on RAP organisation boards (20+ per cent increase).

• 740 First Nations people in RAP organisations were in executive leadership roles (20+ per cent increase).

• 25,237 contracts were entered into between RAP organisations and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander organisations (42 per cent increase).

Ms Mundine said the impact of RAPs went far beyond economic and employment benefits, and added to the understanding

of First Nations histories, cultures and circumstances by other Australians.

“Nearly a million employees of RAP organisations participated in cultural immersion, online or face-to-face cultural learning activities,” she said.

“The results are encouraging and should help inform the new Government’s policy initiatives.

“Our National Reconciliation Week theme this year, Bridging Now to Next, calls on all Australians to reflect, as a nation, on where we go next on our reconciliation journey, and this report demonstrates that good progress is being made in our RAP program.

“Our work is paying dividends for First Nations people and a more unified, informed Australia.”

Sustainable beef brings a new partnership

Esparq Ventures has formed a new partnership to address an ongoing ecological and cultural threat to the land by developing an innovative, Indigenous-led regenerative enterprise called Normanby Bush Beef.

It was hoped the new venture, with Normanby Aboriginal Corporation (NAC), based on Normanby Station, just north west of Cooktown, would create sustainable beef products while doing good for the land and First Nations communities.

Esparq Ventures founder and CEO Darryl Majid said they were proud to be involved.

“An Indigenous-owned and sustainable beef business that is doing good for the land and the First Nations communities connected to it, used to be unheard of,” he said.

“We’re proud to be supporting Normanby Bush Beef in their early days of running a pilot to bring this seemingly impossible task to life.

“The most exciting thing about this project is it’s just getting started.

“With capital and investment, Normanby Bush Beef could launch and scale its operations across the region.

“Having worked with a range of high-growth startups and impact investors throughout my career, a common misconception is that a scalable business needs to be a tech-based business.

“But the Indigenous-led team at

NAC is bucking this trend, proving that scalable ideas can come from anywhere and still deliver tangible financial and social outcomes.”

The idea was Balnggarrawarra Traditional Owners, together with the Normanby rangers who manage Normanby Station, were addressing the severe impact of feral cattle on the station by transforming cattle and land management, including a transition to ethical mustering, protection of cultural sites and customs and sustainable economic management of the Indigenous estate.

NAC’s mission was to engage in sustainable natural resource management practices to maintain the cultural and environmental values of Country.

NAC and Esparq Ventures were raising funds to launch a commercialisation pilot of Normanby Bush Beef in FY26.

Normanby Station covered over 30,000 hectares, and NAC was aiming to process more than 500 cattle per annum once it reached its final production level, as well as create dozens of jobs for First Nations youth in the area.

Esparq Ventures is a First Nationsled not-for-profit organisation built on lived experiences and a deep understanding of building social enterprises as First Nations people.

Hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people attended a “Uncle Alfred’s Day” in honour of the highly respected Alfred “Bimbo” Smallwood in Townsville last week.

The 70-year-old Uncle Alfred has spent a lifetime helping his people and has been in ill health in recent times.

“The day was to invite people to come along and have a yarn and take some photos with the Man of the Day,” his daughter Toya said.

“This is to say Thank You to my Dad/Uncle Alfred, for all that he has done for our community and surrounding areas.”

The day was held at the Helping Our Mob Everywhere offices on Ingham Road between 10am and 3pm and many popped in to spend time with Uncle Alfred, to have a tea or coffee with him.

The Torres News was invited, and guests gathered around Uncle Alfred under marquees and food for a feast was blessed by Pastor Brad Henaway.

“Uncle Alfred has done so much for our communities,” Pastor

Henaway said.

In 2019, when he was the chairman and coordinator of Uncle Alfred Men’s Group Local Drug Action Team, he received the Townsville Senior Citizen of the Year Award in honour of his work in supporting local Indigenous men.

The Uncle Alfred Men’s Group (UAMG) LDAT supports men who have recently been released from the corrections system to actively engage in the community.

Back in 2015 and 2016, Uncle Alfred was named in the Top 50 Most Influential residents in Townsville by the Townsville Bulletin newspaper.

He has been passionate about helping to deal with the root causes of youth crime by working to keep the Indigenous culture strong, now and into the future.

For decades, Indigenous men would pay Uncle Alfred a visit to talk about their problems, and he never let them down.

It was evident by the number who were at his Uncle Alfred’s Day just what an amazing contribution this great man has made to his community.

SNAICC podcast offers new support A new podcast giving centre stage to the voices, stories and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities across the country was launched by SNAICC – National Voice for our Children – earlier last month.

Kids, Culture, Community – SNAICC Yarns was the first podcast of its kind in Australia, placing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and lived experience at the forefront of national conversations about childhood, family, and culture.

SNAICC CEO Catherine Liddle said the podcast filled a critical gap in Australia’s media landscape.

“We wanted a platform that ensures the stories, knowledge and lived experiences of our communities are shared, received, and echoed across the nation – from grassroots voices to national conversations,” Ms Liddle said.

“Each episode dives into the real-world issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, sharing expert insights and grassroots wisdom through a strengths-based, community-led lens.”

Families acknowledged in 20th Mabo Oration The 20th Mabo Oration, presented by the Queensland Human Rights Commission, was delivered in Gimuy (Cairns) for the first time last week.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Katie Kiss presented the Oration titled One Land – Two Laws – It’s Black and White.

The event was hosted by C’Zarke Maza, Commissioner (Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa – Torres Strait Islander Traditional Child Rearing Practice).

Ms Kiss said she held a special connection to Gimuy.

“Living on this country for 10 years, birthing my son on this place, raising my three children here while working at Cape York Land Council in the early years of Native Title, and now having three of my grandchildren grow up on this country, I hold a special connection to Gimuy – also known as Cairns – and I am always grateful for the opportunity to return to this special place,” she said.

“I am truly humbled and honoured to have been asked by the Mabo Family to give this Biennial Mabo Oration – an Oration that pays tribute to a true visionary.

“A humble man – determined to right the wrongs of a system imposed on these lands and its Peoples by those seeking to extend their empire.

“Conquering lands across the seas. Destroying cultures and waging wars against all those who would resist.

“A man of conviction.

“A staunch defender of the rights of Indigenous Peoples and a man who, through his determination to uncover the truth, used the Western Legal System to recognise the legal status of his people, and their ownership of their traditional lands, territories, waters and resources.”

She said he was a man whose legacy had lived on to play an integral part in: • recognition of First Peoples’ enduring sovereignty, traditional law and custom; • our prerogative to access and exercise our rights to our lands, territories and resources; and • to meet our cultural responsibilities to country, our people and our future generations.

“I acknowledge the man this Oration pays tribute to – Dr Koiki Mabo of the Meriam People – and the landmark High Court Decision which bears his name,” she said.

“A judgement handed down by the highest court in this land that overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius – changing the course of Australian history and the foundations of the Australian legal system forever.

“I pay tribute to those who stood with Uncle Koiki in this collective struggle for rights recognition, Reverend Dave Passi, Sam Passi, Celuia Mapo Salee, Barbara Hocking and James Rice – and the legal team who supported them.

“And to the late Aunty Bonita,

who stood alongside her husband while he was with us – and represented his legacy after his passing.

“I acknowledge the Mabo family, some of whom I have known for many years, working in the native title space.

“It is in this spirit that I have titled this year’s Oration One Land – Two Laws – It’s Black and White.

“I believe that Uncle Koiki’s vision was about rebuilding the village – our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander villages.

“My predecessor as Commissioner, June Oscar AO, spoke of the systematic dismantling of the social fabric of First Peoples communities at the hands of an ongoing colonisation process.

“If we are to progress towards a common purpose – for a future that is strengths-based, self-determining and sustainable for our peoples – we need to re-establish ways of working together to re-centre respect for senior eldership and cultural authority and to rebuild our villages.”

She said villages helped to: • Ground our people in our cultures and our obligations to kin and country; • Provide solid foundations for our young people to develop independence, but provide support when needed, and lift us up when we are struggling; • Expose young people to the older generations talking, planning, and coordinating, and which slowly and organically builds the capacity of future generations; • Connect First Peoples from across Australia and across the globe to come together respectfully and with a unity of purpose to share knowledge and advocate for our rights; and • Instil in us the resolve to never compromise on our rights.

“In the absence of a treaty being signed at first contact, I believe Uncle Koiki’s legacy set us – the old peoples, First Peoples, and the new peoples – who now call Australia home – on a path to understand how our two worlds co-exist,” she said.

“On one land – recognising and respecting each other’s differences, responsibilities, laws, cultures, values, and needs, without destroying each other.

“I believe that for Uncle Koiki it was about making what was fundamentally wrong – right.

“It was about respecting those who came before and securing a fair and just future for those yet to come.

The Mabo Oration, a biennial event presented by the QHRC and Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), provided a platform for First Nations leaders to reflect on Eddie Mabo’s powerful legacy to uphold the human rights of First Nations peoples.

The first orator, Noel Pearson, made his address in 2005.

Argun Warriors beat Saguci in 2011 big dance The 26th Island of Origin carnival in 2011 saw two Badu sides, Argun Warriors and Saguci, contest the men’s finals and Waiben’s Sundown Sirens and Mabuiag’s Bau Au Stingers battle it out in the women’s decider, Torres News footy correspondent Alf Wilson writes... *PLEASE note there are mentions of people who may be deceased in this story and pictures.

It was held on Badu, and Argun Warriors defeated Saguci 20-14 in the men’s grand final.

Sundown Sirens beat Bau Au Stingers also 20-14 in the ladies decider.

Five men’s teams lined up, the others were Badu United, Goemu Bau Raiders representing Mabuiag, and Waur Brothers United from Moa. The third women’s team was Dhikun Gammaz fromBadu.

Special guests at the carnival were former Test and Queensland State of Origin prop Sam Backo and rugby league immortal Arthur Beetson.

“I heard there was a surprise and had no idea what it was, and when I saw Artie at the airport, I knew then,” the late and great Wayne Guivarra said at the time.

Artie Beetson played 28 Tests for Australia and was captain in two, in addition to skippering Queensland in the first State of Origin match in 1980.

He played 235 club matches between 1963-81 in the Sydney and Brisbane first grade competitions.

Argun Warriors’ blockbusting prop Harry Mooka won the trophy for player of the carnival.

Northern Pride players at the carnival included former Cowboys stars Ty Williams and Rod Jensen, and then coach David Maiden, who now runs the Queensland Intrust Super Cup from his base in Brisbane.

The games were heard live on TSIMA Radio 4MK across the Torres Strait, and NITV was there filming the games.

Men’s Finals Saguci had easily beaten Argun Warriors 26-12 on day two of the carnival and then defeated Badu United 36-20 in the semi-final.

In the earlier semi-final final Argun Warriors beat a gallant

Goemu Bau Raiders 26-12.

Both sides had numerous players with Foley Shield experience, and opinion was divided around the ground about which would win the big game.

Fullback Aaron Binawel scored for Saguci first in the 12th minute after a great pass from centre Horace Baira.

In the 25th minute, Jordan Solomon scored for Argun and then in a defining moment in the decider, classy fiveeighth Stanley Daniel kicked a 40/20, giving his team a scrum feed near the line.

Richardo Laza then scored to give Argun an 8-6 halftime lead.

With forwards David Grainer and Harry Mooka making plenty of ground up the middle of the ruck, Argun gained a 14-6 lead.

That extended to a 20-10 lead before Saguci scored late.

Best for Argun Warriors were Grainer, Mooka, Daniel, winger Patock Tamwoy, centre Keiji Bowie who was working at Weipa then, and halfback Steven Singleton.

For Saguci, prop Ben Scheel, hooker Iona Nona, Horace Baira, Aaron Binawel, Dale Pablo and Peter Eseli were stars.

Ladies’ Finals Sundown Sirens went into the decider as underdogs after losing 26-8 to Bau Au Stingers on day two.

The side also had several injuries to key players, but started well and led 16-nil at halftime.

Before leaving the field, star Sirens inspirational halfback Kristy Wilson told her players that Stingers would come back.

“Let’s not take our feet off the accelerator,” she said.

When Lillius Namok scored a try in the last minute in the corner, Sirens had the final, and the celebrations started.

They followed on

the next day when the players returned to Waiben and did a lap of honour along streets in two utes flying the team flag.

Elsie Seriat scored two tries in the final for Sirens and proudly held the flag aloft.

“This was the best ladies’ final I have ever played in,” she said.

Strait Stars on point for Spina

BY ALF WILSON Players from Boigu, Saibai, Dauan, Mer, Masig, Warraber, Ugar, Mabuiag, Badu, Poruma, Iama, Hammond and Moa Islands were members of the Strait Stars team to compete at the prestigious Laurie Spina junior rugby league carnival in Townsville this week.

Strait Stars competed under the banner of the Zenadth Kes Juniors.

Another Torres Strait team, the Stingers, with players from Waiben and organised by the Zenadth Kes Junior Rugby League, was also there.

More than 60 teams featuring under-11 male and female players from around Queensland took part in the two-day carnival at Townsville’s scenic Queen’s Park.

Zenadth Kes Juniors president and former Melbourne Storm NRL player Sam Joe, who is based on Mabuiag, told the Torres News the players were picked after a two-day

“Every island was represented by 10 juniors and it was a great success,” Sam said.

“We are taking a squad to Townsville with all islands represented.

“That will include four girls and rest are boys.”

competed in 2023.

“Our team was one of a few selected to go along to a Cowboys game at Queensland Country Bank Stadium and they loved it,” Sam said.

“We only go every two years because of the cost and funding.”

When in Townsville, the players were accommodated at NRL Cowboys House.

“We really want to thank Cowboys House,” Sam said.

Another bonus for these juniors, some who have never been to Townsville before, was that they will get to meet current Cowboys players, including Reuben Cotter.

Sam said the trip would be more than a sporting event for these youngsters from the remote islands.

“It will also be about their cultural, spiritual and life skills experiences for later in life,” Sam said.

Miela Sowah scored 49 points, Mia Loyd 36 points, and Matt Kenyon 45 points.

What’s even better was that two players had triple-doubles!

Mia had 36 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, whilst Cayla George scored 17 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists.

Cairns were on the road, and the Dolphins lost to Rockhampton but bounced back and defeated Mackay. The Marlins didn’t have any success.

This weekend, Sunshine Coast Phoenix will play games in the north, Mackay will have a bye, and Rockhampton are on the road down south.

The Southern Districts Spartans women’s team are the only undefeated team.

AFL Cape York Ltd has appointed former student Iada Bowie as its first-ever Female Development Coordinator.

Ms Bowie first joined AFL Cape York and the Kickstart Program as a participant representing Badu Island State School, later working as a respected Residential Boarding Supervisor within the Girls House program.

After a year with Queensland Health, Iada returned to take on this new leadership role, where she was responsible for creating new opportunities and pathways for women and girls in AFL across

Cape York Peninsula, Torres Strait Islands and Gulf Savannah regions.

“I’m so grateful for the experience and the opportunity,” Ms Bowie said.

“To have gone through the program and now to be able to go back into community – even going home to Badu Island recently to deliver the program, is so special.”

Ms Bowie said it was an honour to be the first Female Development Coordinator, furthering opportunities for young girls and women from remote communities.

“The next generation is our future,” she said.

“And if we can in

any way have a positive impact on our young people’s journey – well, we’re the lucky ones to be a part of that.”

Iada Bowie’s appointment represented a growing focus on strengthening female participation in sport and empowering young women to follow their passions, on and off the field, and create equality across the sporting landscape.

Her story was testament to the impact of long-term support, mentorship, and community connection – and an inspiring example of what was possible for young women in the region.

Maryke presents uniforms

BY ALF WILSON Proud Torres Strait Islander Maryke Babia presented Firebirds players with special uniforms for when they competed in Suncorp Super Netball’s First Nations Round, which coincided with National Reconciliation Week.

The Firebirds players wore the dresses when they lost 70-52 to the Melbourne Vixens at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena on Sunday.

Maryke, who turned 21 on 4 March, has Mabuiag Island family connections and represented the Australian First Nations Black Swans team at the PacificAus Sports Netball Series in February.

Netball Queensland media and communications manager Edward Jackson said Maryke was one of five Black Swans players who presented dresses to the Firebirds team.

Maryke told the Torres News she was delighted to be part of the presentation.

“It was good and I really enjoyed it,” she said.

Wing defender Maryke played for the Carina Leagues Club Tigers team based in East Brisbane, who play in the HART Sapphire Series, due to start in early June.

She said she was a big Firebirds supporter and hoped to play for the team in the future.

Hatrick hero AJ’s 200th try milestone

BY ALF WILSON Flying winger Alex “AJ” Johnston scored three tries for South Sydney, which included his 200th in the NRL when his side lost 36-30 to the Warriors on Sunday.

AJ’s first try at the 27th minute was one for the highlight reels.

He intercepted a ball and ran the length of the field to score and followed up with four-pointers at the 58th and 72nd minute marks.

For his 200th try, AJ swooped on a pass from Latrell Mitchell.

The only player in NRL history to score more tries than AJ was the legendary Ken Irvine with 212.

Aged 30, if AJ remains injury-free for the remaining 12 rounds this season, he may well pass that record.

Reuben inspires win A Reuben Cotter line break at the 14th minute sparked the Cowboys, which rolled

the West Tigers 32-28 in Townsville on Saturday night.

by Reuben was followed up by halfback Tom Deaden, who passed to second rower John Bateman, who scored to give the Cowboys an 8-nil lead.

Reuben backed up from his Queensland State of Origin appearance three nights earlier and was an inspiration.

But the Cowboys had led 18-6 at halftime and expanded that to 32-6 and looked set for a huge percentage boosting victory.

But the Tigers fought back, and the Cowboys’ defence must be concerning for their coach, Todd Payten.

Many Torres Strait Islander spectators were at the game, including those who walked from the Cowboys League Club in the Townsville CBD with the drum connection.

Mer islander Loretta Zaro and Khalil Zaro,

aged five, were amongst them.

Xavier raids Roosters’ line Classy young winger Xavier Savage scored a try for the Canberra Raiders in their 26-24 win over the Sydney Roosters in Sydney.

Xavier crossed at the 31st minute to continue his reputation as one of the best finishers in the comp.

Centre Seb Kris was also consistent for the Raiders who trailed 12-4 at halftime.

But the never-say-die Raiders rallied, and they are now second on the ladder.

Ezra try Broncs highlight A great try in which Gehamat Shibasaki and Ezra Mam combined was one of the only bright points for the Brisbane Broncos who lost 34-6 to Manly Sea Eagles on Saturday night.

It came at the 14th minute when five-eighth Ezra scored after a

grubber kick from Gehamat.

After that, Manly controlled the game and led 22-6 at halftime.

Once rated a genuine premiership contender under new coach Michael Maguire the Broncos now sit at 11th place on the ladder.

Dane on the run Centre Dane Gagai was a standout for the Newcastle Knights who lost 20-6 to the St George Dragons on Friday night at Jubilee Stadium.

Veteran Dane made 18 runs for 204 metres and made eight tackle breaks, and his battle with champion Dragons centre Val Holmes was a classic.

Dane made many great runs and was tenacious in defence and kicked the only Knights goal.

Other games Melbourne Storm beat the Gold Coast Titans 28-16, the Penrith Panthers defeated the Parramatta Eels 18-10.

Origin game one The Queensland Maroons will be looking for redemption in the second State of Origin clash with NSW on June 18 in Perth after losing game one 18-6.

Queensland included Reuben Cotter and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.

NSW led 14-2 at halftime at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and scored four tries to one.

PNG international Xavier Coates crossed for Queensland at the 45th minute from his wing.

Queensland must win game two to keep the series alive.

Maroons women win game three.

A Queensland side which included Jasmine Peters won the third women’s State of Origin defeating NSW 18-14 in Newcastle on Thursday night.

NSW had won the first two series matches and, even though it was a “dead rubber”, Queensland played for pride and came through.

Jets flying high and playing ‘happy’ footy STORY AND PIC

BY ALF WILSON The Torres Strait duo of winger Jon Reuben and fiveeighth Julian Christian were key players when the Ipswich Jets beat the Clydesdales 42-12 on Sunday.

The Jets led 18-nil at halftime at North Ipswich Oval and have moved to fifth on the 15-club ladder.

Julian told the Torres News there was a great environment at the Jets amongst players.

“It shows, and we are playing happy football,” Julian said.

Julian said he was delighted with being moved from fullback to five-eighth in what was a well-balanced team.

Pride down in cliffhanger Cairns-based Northern Pride made the long trip to Port Moresby on Sunday and lost 20-16 to the PNG Hunters.

The Pride side included second rower Jamal Shibasaki and centre Braithan RobertsonKetchell.

The Hunters led 10-4 at halftime before a large parochial crowd, where visiting teams find it difficult to win.

It was 16-all with seven minutes to go, and anybody’s match, however, the home crowd cheered, and their team snared the win.

Manly Seagulls next Sunday in Brisbane.

Pride ready for debut in ladies comp The Cairns-based Northern Pride will make their debut in the Statewide BMD ladies rugby premiership when they travel to Brisbane to meet the Tigers in round one on Saturday, June 14.

Planning for the debut has been ongoing for the past six months.

It will be an expanded 12-club comp, and the other North Queensland sides will be

the reigning premiers, Mackay Cutters.

The Pride and Cutters will both boast quality Torres Strait Islander players, some of whom will also feature in the NRLW later in the season.

Boigu Islanders Steven Tom, Gary Tom and Colin Aruba along with Badu Islander Igarie Ahmat were in Townsville last Saturday to watch the Cowboys’ NRL win over the West Tigers.

“Whilst here, I got the opportunity to meet some Mackay Cutters ladies players,” Igarie told the Torres News.

Other competing Queensland Cup sides will be the CQ Capras, Tweed Seagulls, Ipswich Jets, Bears, Clydesdales, Wynnum Manly, Falcons, Devils and Magpies.

2nd pro fight on the cards for Warria

BY ALF WILSON Sweet revenge will be the aim of heavyweight professional boxer Thomas “Torres Thunder” Warria when he meets Ricky “The Lumberjack” Sangral in Cairns later this month.

As a power-punching amateur back in 2023, Thomas lost a bout on points to Ricky at the National Titles in Hobart.

Dubbed the Lumberjack because he is a tree lopper, Ricky is based at Inverell in New South Wales and has had two pro bouts for one win after a successful amateur career.

Thomas told the Torres News he has been training hard for his second pro bout after winning his first during February in Townsville, when

he beat Bundaberg’s Ricky Bowles-Brown by a third-round TKO decision.

“I am going to CHOP THE LUMBERJACK DOWN TO SIZE and this is all about sweet revenge,” he said.

“He is a big boy but so I will treat him with respect.”

The bout was a curtain raiser on a No Limit Boxing promotion.

“It will be on Foxtel cable television and Kayo – most of the undercards, including mine, will be screened for free, and then people will have to subscribe for the main events,” he said.

“I have relatives on Mabuiag, Waiben, Badu and many in Cairns where I was born and Townsville where I live now, I will have heaps of support.”

Thomas, who weighs in at 105 kilograms, was trained by Hayden Hooper from Townsville’s Art of Strength Gym. “Ricky was lucky to get the points decision on that occasion in Hobart so it’s square up time in Cairns. Tommy is focused, sharp and hungry,” Hayden said.

Hayden said Thomas was focused, fit and confident and at a comfortable weight.

“The 4 × 3-minute rounds will allow Thomas to show his new hunger and skills,” Hayden said.

The main bout on the action packed card will be between Mackay born Liam Paro and Jonathan Navarro over 10 rounds.

Before that, the support bout will see Liam Wilson take on Ayrton Gimenez.
