TSRA support for communities to live long and healthy lives

Torres Strait Regional Authority’s (TSRA) Healthy Communities Grants are now open, with grants starting from $10,000 available to support healthy and active communities across the Torres Strait region, including Bamaga and Seisia in

the Northern Peninsula Area.

TSRA Chairperson George Nona said the grants would go towards local activities to support better access to affordable fresh and healthy foods, and initiatives to encourage more active and healthy lifestyles in communities.

“TSRA’s Healthy Communities Grants will help more local people kick health goals, keep active and enjoy happier, healthier lives,” Mr Nona said.

“We hope to receive

plenty of applications with ideas, initiatives and projects to support healthy and active communities, including from sporting and community organisations across the region.

“I encourage individuals, groups and organisations to bring your ideas to the table and apply now.”

Example activities include: • Innovative health and wellbeing initiatives to support Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people to live long and healthy

lives through: – regular participation in a healthy lifestyle and physical activity – better access to healthy and affordable food for all families – more information and awarenessraising to enable families to make healthy choices.

Calling all creatives: Zenadth Kes Creative Arts Your North Queensland airline survey extended

An opportunity for artists and creative practitioners to raise their voices and have a say has been extended by the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA).

The Zenadth Kes Creative Arts Survey will be online for First Nations artists, businesses and creative practitioners in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) until Sunday, 18

May.

The landmark survey was to help the TSRA measure the economic value of the region’s Creative Arts Industry.

TSRA Chairperson George Nona said the extended closing date was in response to strong community interest.

“Eso to all of our creative and cultural practitioners who have completed the survey,” Mr Nona said.

“We have extended the survey’s closing date to ensure we provide enough time for even more people in creative industries to have a say.

“Your voice matters and the survey findings will guide TSRA in restructuring support packages for yumi creative arts businesses.”

The survey was for First Nations people who worked in the arts, created artworks or sold art in any capacity,

including as a hobby, and for those who were: • Visual artists, painters, sculptors, printmakers; • Performing artists, musicians, dancers, theatre practitioners • Writers, poets, filmmakers, designers; • Craftspeople, jewellery-makers, fashion designers, digital media artists; • Working in an arts centre, radio station or arts business; and, • Any aspiring or existing Zenadth Kes creative professionals looking to grow their career.

The collected data was to inform the TSRA how it could continue to ensure arts businesses – including sole traders and artisans – received better funding, stronger support programs, and greater national and international opportunities.

The survey was quick and easy to complete online at www.

surveymonkey.com/r/ zkcreativeartssurvey or in person at Gab Titui Cultural Centre, NPA Arts Centre, Moa Arts, Erub Arts and Badu Art Centre.

Participants go into the draw to win one of 10 x $50 CEQ vouchers.

Election contenders’ flying visits STORY BY CHRISTINE HOWES PICS SUPPLIED Greens candidate for Leichhardt, Phillip Musumeci and Queensland Senate contender for the Indigenous Aboriginal Party of Australia (IAPA), Wayne Wharton, were on Waiben last week and into the weekend.

Mr Musumeci said he was committed to being the best candidate he could be.

“After the election was called, I arranged time off work to attend a community forum in Weipa in April and later the ANZAC Day ceremony on Thursday Island,” he said.

“On both trips, I made it a priority to meet with local government members and to talk with as many community members as possible.

“For Zenadth Kes, I knew I needed to learn more about present-day climate change effects on life and also get a first-hand experience of food prices, although I had some idea through CEQ contacts.”

He said he also spoke to many people about the climate change issue.

“I learnt about problems with seawall foundations deteriorating and one guy I chatted to on ANZAC Day simply summed up the situation as ‘Saibai has real problems’,” he said.

He said the ANZAC Day ceremony was the best thing he did while he was here.

“I really wanted to experience the pride shown for the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion in an ANZAC ceremony, as I had recently read some WW2 history of the north,” he said.

“For me, the TSLIB is a guiding light and I appreciated the dawn service and march in their honour.”

Mr Wharton said it was important to him to cover as much ground across the state as possible as he campaigned for a “voice for sovereignty and justice”.

“I think I can change the housing crisis and address employment as well as bring more procurement to the community,” he said of his visit last weekend.

“Real contracts, not just jobs, not just about fishing management of port harbours, but shipping management and maintenance.”

He said he had a plan to take health and aged care to the outer islands, and to coordinate health patients with hands-on health workers who were from community.

“Self-determination in practice,” he said.

“Empowering families to take up business where they feel they can make a profit, not on CDP or working for the dole.”

He said having a greater say in the environment and things such as deep-sea mining was a real threat.

“If there is a table, we should have a seat at it,” he said.

He said he was the most impressed with the number of local workers at the airport – from in the air to on the ground – and the pride they had in what they did.

Earlier this year, Matt Smith (Labor) and Jeremy Neal (LNP) also made visits to Zenadth Kes, before this Saturday’s election was called.

Which way Thursday Island Post Office?

The license to run the privately-owned Thursday Island Post Office was held by Wyatt Lemke, who has provided a written statement to Torres News in response to the allegations.

He said much of what was circulating on social media was misinformation.

“We assure the community that all staff have been, and continue to be, paid,” he said.

“Following a full internal audit completed late last year, no major payroll discrepancies were found.

“We are also working with an external auditor to maintain the highest compliance standards into the future.”

Mr Lemke said a recent Facebook post showing a garage door with a sign that said, “shop closed due to excessive underpayments” was fabricated and untrue.

Mr Lemke said he had reached out to several Facebook groups moderators to have incorrect posts removed, but some had not yet responded.

He also said there have been no closures of the Post Office other than for public holidays and outside of normal business trading hours.

Customers have also noticed the declining state of the larger store the post office was situated in – the second part of Mr Lemke’s business – where a foodery had closed and shelves were largely empty.

Mr Lemke said the business was reviewing its processes.

“Freight costs, skill shortages and historical business practices are being reviewed and adapted to ensure sustainability moving forward,” he said.

Ombudsman complaints Postal Industry

Ombudsman Iain Anderson said 14 complaints had been received by their office.

He said nine of those had come in December 2024, concerning the Post Office being closed, and five of them in March 2025, in relation to unreliable parcel delivery.

“Australia Post contacted the complainants – the complainants have not come back to our Office, suggesting that the complaints may have been resolved,” he said.

“We are yet to receive a further update.”

Mr Anderson said if the complaints could not be resolved, the Ombudsman would consider whether an investigation was necessary.

“We will also continue to monitor complaint numbers to inform decision making,” he said.

Mr Lemke said he was aware of all of the complaints.

“We can confirm that all investigations have been completed and the matters are now closed,” he said in his statement.

Important letters missed Community members said the alleged postal delays have caused them to miss important mail, including medical appointments.

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) and the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TSHHS) said they had moved to a text-based appointment notification method.

TCHHS Executive General Manager North Marita Sagigi said there had been some complaints that patients had missed their forms for specialist clinics.

“We regret any inconvenience caused, and we always work with patients who have missed their appointments, [to] reschedule their

appointments to suit,” she said.

“We are able to provide updates to patients for their appointments through SMS from our electronic medical records system, and we encourage them to opt in for these.

“As a further back-up, we will be working with our medical specialists to develop additional alternative ways to communicate appointment details to our community members.”

Where is Australia Post?

Australia Post has confirmed they were aware of the allegations and was monitoring the situation.

A spokesperson for Australia Post advised that staffing issues must be dealt with by the owner, as the licence was privately owned.

“In recent months, we have had regular contact to address these issues with the licensee, who operates this outlet as an independent

small business,” the spokesperson said.

“All licensees are required to abide by national employment law in addition to fulfilling the requirements of their contract with Australia Post.”

Australia Post said they had also held a community meeting with stakeholders in the region.

“We continue to monitor the situation closely while considering next steps,” the spokesperson said.

“We assure the community Australia Post will work to ensure continuity of service on Thursday Island.”

Staff issues Community members also expressed their frustration with inconsistent service from Post Office staff.

Roles filled by international workers who were new to the role had too much to learn, they said.

M Continued from P4 Mr Lemke said last year some of his most valuable long-term staff moved on to other “excellent career opportunities”.

“We are proud of their achievements and grateful that many continue to support us in various ways,” he said.

“While some new team members are currently on working visas, our long-term goal remains to recruit and retain local, full-time staff.

“Discussions with prospective local employees are ongoing.”

Customer Bertha Natanalui said the new staff were rude and had once failed to send her mail.

“I’ve got a granddaughter who’s in uni who needs some of her stuff because her

mail comes to me, but I’m frightened to send it there, because I don’t know whether it’ll reach her,” she said.

Delays Ms Natanalui said the Post Office staff often blamed Sea Swift for postal delays.

Sea Swift said mail was considered essential freight and was never held at the depot.

“We rectified the issue in March following your post, for an example, and have had no problems with Australia Post delays since,” a spokesperson said. “We have not been approached by the community directly outlining these problems either.

“We do work very closely with the Thursday Island community on all of their freight requirements.”

Committed Ms Natanalui said community members had also long complained about the state of post office boxes, many of which were rusted or had doors falling off their hinges.

“I have to pay the box for $51 for one and because I’ve got two boxes – that’s about $102 altogether,” she said.

Mr Lemke said he was aware repairs to the post office boxes were needed.

“Parts have been ordered and discussions with Australia Post about upgrading facilities are underway,” he said.

He said he would soon create a Facebook page to share important community information and service updates.

“Our commitment remains strong – as it has been since 2016 – and

we are focused on building a resilient and responsive service for the future,” he said.

“Although, like many businesses, we faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are committed to operating sustainably and are not at risk of closure.

“There is no plan to sell the business or the post office licence.

“Our primary focus remains strengthening post office operations to serve the community long-term.”

The Torres Shire Council and Torres Strait Regional Authority were contacted for comment, but have yet to respond.

Local Member for Cook, David Kempton said he was looking into the matter and would come back to Torres News with a response.

The new Torres Strait island takeaway food business in Townsville’s main street is a genuine family affair run by Florrie Schwartz, her partner Stephen Tom and with help from their children Joyce, 15, Airen, 12, Sonja, 10, and Rhonda, eight.

They have been assisted and mentored by Flo’s mother, Naianga Mabo, who for many years has been renowned for cooking tasty traditional food.

Flo’s Torres Strait Island Takeaway started operations in Flinders Street East in mid-April to serve up a variety of dishes such as seafood boils, coconut curry chicken, pig blood and others.

When the Torres News walked into the front door just after 4pm

last Thursday, the food aroma was tantalising.

“We have been busy since opening and have a continual flow of customers,” Florrie said.

“Lots of elders come in here as well and the children help after school.”

Opening hours were from noon until 8pm daily, with extended late-night hours on the weekend to cater for foot traffic from hungry nearby night club patrons.

As I was taking pics, Waiben man Nawia Nomoa walked in to pick up some food.

“It smells delicious and it is good to have a place like this,” Nawia said.

Naianga said the business was a “dream” of Florrie, who was an excellent cook.

“I love this, as I get to be with my daughter and grandchildren and see all the people who come

in,” Naianga said.

Last week the family was hard at work preparing for an influx of Torres Strait Islander customers headed for an event at the local military museum.

Aboriginal customers were also well catered for at the business, which was in an ideal location.

“When the Palm Island ferry arrives in Ross Creek, not far from here, many of the passengers walk past heading for the CBD and come in and pick up some food,” Flo said.

Florrie was also in a position to cater for Cowboys home game crowds at the nearby Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

A comfortable sitting area is located towards the back of the shop and a soon-to-be-open upstairs section will offer views of the creek and Flinders Street.

Maiem: Sew Ngapa On Thursday 24 April, the inaugural Waybeni Combined Schools Commemorative ANZAC Service was held at Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh, marking a significant milestone in the island’s schools’ history. The event brought together over 500 students, along with more than 150 staff members, parents, and community members, all gathered in the Multipurpose Hall for a truly special occasion that honoured the ANZAC spirit.

The service was thoughtfully led by the student leadership teams from the three

schools on Thursday Island. School captains Hunter, Titus, Jaylan, and Tymani from Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh; Kunio and Emily from Waybeni Koey Ngurpay Mudh (WKNM); and Madoc, Areti, Esta-Ann, and Ryanjade from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School (OLSH) showcased their exceptional leadership skills, guiding their peers through a respectful and solemn ceremony.

Adding to the event’s emotional depth, the Language and Culture Group from the secondary school delivered a heartfelt performance of the song “Jack Jacky,” while students from OLSH recited the poignant poem “In Flanders Fields.” These performances underscored the collective recognition and celebration of the ANZAC legacy, reinforcing the importance of

remembering those who served and sacrificed.

The service was further dignified by the presence of key figures who brought their expertise and support to the event. These included Marsat Ketchell, Cultural Advisor (RSL); Major Michael Kiting from the 51st FNQ Regiment (ADF); Torres Shire Council Mayor Elise Seriat and Deputy Mayor Toshi Nakata; Father Michael Symanski; and bugler Christopher Graham, whose presence added a sense of reverence to the proceedings.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the individuals who played a crucial role in the success of this special event. Special thanks go to Deputy Principal of WKNM, Derek Wood; Principal of OLSH, David Graham; Tagai State College Business

Cultural Training Empowers Educational Leaders: Insights from Brisbane Session On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Myree Sam – Kadhego Head of Campus and I led a pivotal Cultural Capability session in Brisbane, attended by the K-2 Strategy team from the Department of Education.

This session, titled “The Big Picture – A Hidden History,” aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of Australia’s history through a First Nations perspective.

The workshop explored the profound impact of historical laws, policies, and societal attitudes on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities since colonisation.

Last term, we were thrilled to witness the success of the Warraber Ngurpay Cross Country event.

Our Kindergarten students have been thriving through our free fruit scheme this year.

Our children have been engaging with a variety of texts, learning to express their ideas and thoughts in both verbal and written forms. In addition to reading narratives and sharing their insights, they are also developing critical thinking skills by analysing characters and plot developments.

It was heartwarming to see the entire community come together to cheer on our young athletes. The children demonstrated remarkable perseverance and sportsmanship, making us immensely proud.

It’s been an excellent opportunity for them to learn about healthy eating and the importance of nutrition. Each week, they explore different food groups, discovering new fruit and incorporating them into their daily meals.

The project,

scheduled for the 2025/26 financial year, would address significant damage to the existing ramp to ensure safer and more reliable freight and transport access for the island’s residents and businesses.

During the April Council meeting, the Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) formally resolved to enter into a funding agreement with TMR to secure the $2.21 million grant.

The Dauan Barge Ramp Upgrade would deliver a robust new structure to replace the deteriorating ramp.

Key works included: • Replacing damaged panels on the lower section of the ramp.

• Building a durable, solid concrete ramp, designed to withstand daily use and severe weather conditions.

• Reinforcing the ramp’s abutments with imported rock to add strength and stability.

The improvements addressed years of wear and tear, and ensured the ramp would meet the growing transportation needs of the community.

The funding was part of the State-wide ATSI TIDS program, which supported transportation infrastructure projects in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Queensland.

By investing in critical infrastructure, the program aimed to improve safety, accessibility, and overall quality of life in remote areas.

Mayor Mosby said the funding announcement was a welcome and significant win for the Dauan Island community.

“This upgrade is crucial for Dauan,” Mayor Mosby said.

“The barge ramp is a lifeline for residents and businesses, and these improvements will ensure it remains safe and reliable for years to come.

“This is about supporting our community’s future, and we are grateful to the Department of Transport and Main Roads for recognising the importance of this project,” he said.

With funding now secured, planning and preparations for the upgrade were set to start in the coming months.

Erub Roads TSIRC has also secured more than $2.7 million in Disaster Recovery Funding to reconstruct roads on Erub after the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper and associated flooding in December 2023. The grant, approved under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DFRA), was to help

restore essential public assets in the region.

The funding was deemed eligible by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) and jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments in an initiative aimed at helping local governments recover from the impacts of natural disasters.

Mayor Mosby welcomed the funding and said it was important to the community’s recovery efforts.

“The people of Erub endured significant challenges due to Cyclone Jasper,” he said.

“This funding will ensure the reconstruction of essential infrastructure that our community relies on daily.

“It’s a critical step in helping us build back better and stronger.”

TSIRC CEO James William said the funding reflected a collaboration between governments and local communities.

“This funding is a testament to the strong partnership between TSIRC, the Queensland Government, and the Commonwealth,” he said.

“It will allow us to repair critical infrastructure and ensure the safety and connectivity of our communities.”

Hospital rescue plan excludes Waiben and Bamaga

BY CARLI WILLIS In what has been touted as “the largest investment in hospital infrastructure Queensland has ever seen,” the State Government has announced a Hospital Rescue Plan that has excluded ongoing work to the Thursday Island Hospital.

It also excluded a major expansion planned for Bamaga Hospital for many years, but never started.

The new plan, which incorporated an additional 2600 beds across the state, made use of funding allocated by the previous government to upgrade or build health infrastructure across the state.

It was the result of an independent review, announced in December last year by Health and Ambulance Services Minister Tim Nicholls, into the previous government’s Capital Expansion Program (CEP).

The review looked into the progress, delays and costs of developments across the state.

Under the new plan, Zenadth Kes Primary Health Care centres to be replaced include Bamaga, Horn Island, Badu and Boigu.

However, the new plan excluded the Thursday Island Hospital, which Torres News understood was already in need of repair since a $56 million-dollar upgrade was completed last year.

Torres News contacted Queensland Minister for Health Tim Nicholls for a reply about the missing hospitals, but did not receive a response in time for our print deadlines.

Member for Cook David Kempton

said the new plan was based on the previous government’s budget.

“We have responded to the Sangster [independent] report that had a lot of condemnation about [the CEP], “ he said.

“There was a lack of consultation, a lot of cost overruns and a lack of planning.

“So, whilst it was a good idea, and they certainly had a good team of people backing it, it just wasn’t implemented in a way that was going to bring outcomes.

“All we’ve done is taken that basket of money and put it around a plan, and it’s called a Hospital Rescue Plan, that is going to get those particular clinics and services on track to be delivered within budget and on time.”

Under the plan, Torres and Cape staff accommodation was also earmarked for replacement, however, Mr Kempton was not able to provide additional details on this.

“People who live in and are connected with the community are far better equipped to deliver health services and, in fact, do deliver a better service than people who come and go, because they become part of the community,” Mr Kempton said.

“I think across the board, the problem is with the delivery of front-line services at every level is accommodation suppression, especially in the remote areas.

“We’ll be making sure that there is sufficient accommodation to attract [staff].”

He said he would look into repairs needed for the Thursday Island Hospital and update the Torres News.

Restitution on Senate contender’s agenda

BY ALF WILSON About 30 people attended a meeting at St Theresa’s Church in Townsville last Thursday in support of the Indigenous Aboriginal Party of Australia (IAPA) candidate for the Queensland Senate, Wayne (Coco) Wharton, in the upcoming Federal Election.

Mr Wharton, who lives in Brisbane and is a Koomi elder, was raised in north Queensland and lived in Townsville for many years.

He was a star rugby league player for the now defunct Estates Club in the Townsville and District competition.

As a prominent Indigenous activist, he has been a vocal

proponent of land rights, cultural preservation and reparations for the enduring impacts of colonisation, including the Stolen Generations and dispossession of traditional lands.

He said he was stepping forward to represent the voices of First Nations people in the fight for justice, selfdetermination, and truth.

A key aspect of his vision was how restitution could directly empower Indigenous communities, closing the gap by providing resources and opportunities that address systemic disadvantages.

Mr Wharton said he believed the Senate should be used properly and “not just a rubber stamp”.

“The Senate should be about checking and balancing the incumbent government,” he said.

Mr Wharton said he was also working to establish embassies in Harlem and Dublin, taking the fight for justice to the international stage and building networks of resistance and solidarity across the country, demanding the truth.

Prominent North Queenslander Randall Ross was at the meeting to hear Mr Wharton speak.

“It is good to have a candidate who we know and has proven for a long time that he stands up for our people and their communities,’ Mr Ross said.

Mr Ross said Mr Wharton had spoken to many First Nations and non Indigenous people, telling them what he stands for.

“Wayne is about the interests of our people and that is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders,” Mr Ross said.

Albert Abdul-Rahman said it was important to have such a candidate.

“The meeting was historic for our people and constructive, Wayne has proven integrity and determination to help the causes of Indigenous people – he wants justice for our people,” Mr Abdul Rahman said.

As puddles continue to form around Zenadth Kes, thanks to ongoing rain, residents are reminded once again to take precautions against mosquito bites.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Heidi Carroll said it was common to see mosquito numbers increase after wet and warm weather, and the rise in numbers raised the risk of contracting mosquitoborne illnesses, such as Ross River virus and Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV).

To date, three cases of JEV have been reported in Queensland, with two tragically resulting in death—the state’s first recorded fatalities from the virus since 2022.

JEV is a rare but potentially serious illness spread by infected mosquitoes.

While not everyone infected by JEV will get sick, it can cause serious illness in some people, including inflammation of the brain.

Additionally, a total of 223 Ross River virus cases have been recorded this year.

Dr Carroll said Queensland Health has been working closely with local governments and other stakeholders to conduct mosquito surveillance activities this mosquito season, with testing ramped up in light of recent JEV human cases and positive mosquito samples.

Dr Carroll said making the JEV vaccine free for at-risk

communities – which include the Northern Peninsula Area and the Torres Strait – was part of Queensland Health’s efforts against the virus.

“We are continuing to expand eligibility for free JEV vaccination to communities determined to be at greatest risk of JEV, whether this be due to JEV detections in mosquitoes or pigs,” Dr Carroll said.

The Department of Primary Industries has also worked with Queensland Health regarding detections in pigs to help inform human vaccine eligibility.

Pigs can serve as amplifying hosts for JEV, with mosquitoes becoming infected after biting infected pigs or wading birds.

Dr Carroll stressed the importance of taking measures to avoid mosquito bites.

“It’s important to remember that not all mosquito-borne diseases have vaccines. The most important message I have for Queenslanders is not to be complacent and to protect yourself against mosquito bites,” Dr Carroll said.

“Any mosquito could carry a mosquito-borne disease, but if you don’t get bitten, you can’t get infected.

“All campers should be especially vigilant against mosquito bites, given you will likely be spending a lot of time outdoors, including at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.”

Waiben to host annual Labour Day celebrations Waiben’s Labour Day celebrations and parade will be held on Friday 23 May from 5pm at Anzac Park.

They will finish with a Family Fun evening hosted by local unions at the Thursday Island Bowls Club.

Last year, Queensland Unions celebrated 140 years of supporting workers in the state.

TSLIB leads the way in Townsville march STORY & PICS BY ALF WILSON Hundreds of Torres Strait Islander men, women and children either marched or were amongst an estimated crowd of 30,000 along the Strand as part of Townsville’s ANZAC Day events.

Leading the way were members of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion (TSLIB) committee and supporters.

Between 1942 and 1945, 880 members of the TSLIB were an integral part of Australia’s first line of defence against a much-feared Japanese invasion.

Aircraftswoman Olive-Rose Pearson, now based at Newcastle in New South Wales, held the lead banner, followed by Patrick Neliman and William Blanco jnr, each at either end of a bigger banner.

Several schools, including boarders from local colleges, also participated in the march.

One of the youngest was sevenyear-old Eli Edoni-Cantrell, who

carried the Mundingburra State School flag.

Elders had earlier been picked up in a bus and driven to a marquee along the Strand to watch the march.

TSLIB working committee co-ordinator Therese Cowley said after the march, they gathered at the Jezzine Barracks Army Museum Precinct for singing and a light lunch.

Across town in Thuringowa, a dawn service and second march took place.

A stolen car forced the postponement of the parade for about 20 minutes as organisers moved marchers off the road and onto the footpath for safety.

Queensland Police said initial information indicated a stolen RAM utility had earlier been involved in several hit-and-run traffic crashes in Thuringowa.

BY ALF WILSON Command Warrant Officer Glen Wright and LS Roneld Baragud represented the Royal Australian Navy and HMAS Cairns at the emotional ANZAC Day Dawn Service on Waiben.

Australian Army Reserve soldiers from Sarpeye (Charlie) Company within the 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment, attended a moving service with a Waiben warrior, held at the Green Hill Fort.

A march also began at 8.30am from the old Post Office building before a second service was held at ANZAC Memorial Park from 9am.

During World War II, the Torres Strait was at Australia’s front line when a Japanese invasion was feared.

The 880 members of the famous Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion were ready to defend against any invasion.

LS Baragud was from Yam (Iama) Island and grew up amongst a sea-faring family.

The following year, there was no stopping

him. He saw the Navy as a natural fit.

“My family are sea-going people,” he said. “My greatgreat-grandfather, great-grandfather and grandfather were fishermen.

“We grew up around the sea, it was the main way to make money.”

LS Baragud remembered Navy crew visiting Iama when he was just a child.

He enlisted at age 18 and said he has never looked back. He said he had travelled to many foreign places, including the Middle East but always loved returning to his beloved Zenadth Kes.

Bamaga remembers ANZAC history and spirit STORY AND PICS

BY TALEI ELU A solemn service held at ANZAC Park in Bamaga was attended by locals and visitors in reflection and remembrance, followed by a breakfast at the Cape York Peninsula Lodge last Friday.

Later in the

morning, a larger crowd assembled for the parade led by Captain Ben Kanowski of the 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment, alongside members of the Queensland Police Service, the NPA SES volunteers, students from Northern Peninsula Area College and community members from across the NPA.

At the memorial, wreaths were laid

by NPA Mayor Robert Poipoi, Seisia Councillor Bradford Elu, Queensland Police representatives, SES personnel, community members and students from Northern Peninsula Area College.

Mayor PoiPoi spoke about the history and spirit of the ANZACS.

Blackhawks tame Tigers as good form continues

BY ALF WILSON The high-rolling Blackhawks continued their great form when they rolled the Tigers 22-18 at Totally Workwear Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday.

But the Terry Campese-coached Blackhawks withheld a second-half blitz by the Tigers after leading 22-2 at halftime.

Speedy winger Dudley Dotoi scored a try in the 33rd minute, and the Blackhawks are undefeated.

“Deadly” Dudley received a good ball from halfback Bailey Biondi-Odo, who shone.

Young centre Assariah Lenoy-Sam and veteran hooker Jayden Hodges, were good contributors.

Former Northern Pride player Dantoray moved from Cairns to Redcliffe before the season and has a big following in the Torres Strait.

Hunters trap the Bears

Before a parochial home crowd at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby, the Hunters beat the Burleigh Bears 22-14.

The Hunters led 10-nil at halftime, after laying the foundation with two early tries to five-eighth Gairo Voro in the third minute and winger Solo Wane at the 19th.

After the break,

rampaging second rower Robert Mathias scored twice at the 53rd and 63rd minutes to seal the victory for the Hunters.

Hunters’ goals were kicked by Jamie Mavoko (two) and Trevor Solu.

The Hunters are now sitting in the top eight.

Other games The Norths Devils beat the Western Clydesdales 34-12, and the Magpies defeated the Capras 32-12.

The Queensland competition was the last to start as other conferences – Central, East, South and West – are already into either Round 5 or 6 of fixtures.

Teams are – Brisbane, Cairns, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Mackay, Northside, Rockhampton, South West Metro, Southern Districts, Sunshine Coast and Townsville.

There’s been some changes in the off-season to rosters and coaching staff so I’m looking forward to checking the stats this weekend to see who’s signed where and which teams to look out for.

The girls will attend a camp at AIS this month, and a final team will be chosen to represent in July.

The boys also have an AIS camp with a final team chosen to represent in June.

Gems and Emu will attend the World Cup. Congratulations to the eight Queensland athletes chosen in the national squad and Joel Khalu as an assistant with the Emu team.

However, I’m disappointed that talented guard Teyahna Bond was not selected.

She has the credentials and experience for this age group and was named Defensive Player at the U20 national

tournament held in January this year.

Teyahna may use this as motivation for her game in the NBL1 season, playing with the Cairns Dolphins.

She can now focus on that before starting her scholarship in Hawai’i.

Youth League U23 Northern Mendi League was held in Townsville last weekend with teams from Rockhampton, Mackay, Cairns and Townsville competing.

It’s a great carnival for our younger representative players to have a hit out before the NBL1 season starts, as many of them are on rosters for their regions.

Tournament champions were Mackay (Women) and Rockhampton (Men).

2025 WNBA There are 12 Australian players at training camps for their respective teams, including far north Queensland talented guard Shaneice Swain.

She is with the Los Angeles Sparks and the WNBA season starts this weekend.

Gehamat scores in Broncos’ ambush

BY ALF WILSON It was raining points for the Broncos in wet conditions when they led the previously undefeated and ladder leaders, the Bulldogs, 34-nil at halftime.

The Broncos went on to win the game 42-18, even though they were outscored in the second half.

In the 18th minute, rising star centre Gehamat accepted a pass from fullback Selwyn Cobbo to cross for his try.

Gehamat has established himself as an integral link in the strong Broncos backline.

In good news for the third-placed Broncos, suspended star fiveeighth Ezra Mam will be eligible for selection from round 10.

The Broncos are now fourth on the 17-club comp ladder.

Second half stampede The North Queensland Cowboys overcame a six-point deficit at half time to beat the Gold Coast Titans 50-18 in Townsville on Saturday night.

A touching ANZAC ceremony was held on the field before kick-off.

PNG-born Robert Derby, who moved to Cairns when aged eight, scored three tries for the Cowboys.

Reuben Cotter made an impact from his position of lock.

David Fifita lined up in the Titans forward pack and contributed, especially early on.

It was the fourth straight win by the Cowboys, who are now sixth on the ladder and meet the Warriors next Saturday at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

Late try snares win Centre Seb Kris scored a late and vital try when his Canberra Raiders staged a Houdini-like comeback to beat the Dolphins 38-28 on Sunday.

The Dolphins led 28-10 at halftime but failed to score in the second 40 minutes when the Raiders blitzed with five tries.

Scores had been deadlocked at 28-all at the 72nd minute when Mabuiag Islander Seb pounced on a grubber kick, which a Dolphins player failed to ground, and scored.

At the ninth minute mark, Seb Kris produced a piece of magic when he caught a pass and found a way to throw the ball from over the sideline, with his feet just off the ground, to pass to Savelio Tamale, who crossed.
