BY JENNIFER ENOSA & VELMA GARA Community yarns have been hosted across Zenadth Kes by Torres & Cape Hospital and Health Services (TCHHS) staff to allow communities to have input into their 2025-2028 Health Equity Strategy (HES).

2022-2025 HES was built on input from consumers, the public, staff and health service partners – and due for a refresh. Six key focus areas were identified to improve the health and well-being of First Nations people by the original HES. They were: • Remove racial

• •

discrimination and institutional racism. Increase access to healthcare services. Influence the social, cultural and economic controls of health. Deliver sustainable, culturally safe and responsive healthcare services. Work with Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander people to design, deliver, monitor and review health services. • Strengthen the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce. TCHHS HES Manager Eva Burns said community input was needed into HES 20252028 to ensure everyone had a fair chance.

“For our people to have the ability to live in their communities and have access to services and opportunities no matter where they live,” she said. She said it was important to make sure community voices were heard. “I think it’s an important communication tool, allowing community stakeholders to understand

how and when we are going to achieve [outcomes] and who will be responsible for driving improvement over the next three years,” she said. “HES also helps to build trust and transparency by making it accessible to all community members and key stakeholders.” Continued on PAGE 3 N
