Cast and crew of Straight from the Strait, a production by Opera Queensland, Yumpla Nerkep Foundation and QPAC in association with Brisbane Festival, say they are deeply grateful to be recognised with several accolades, including the prestigious judges’ prize, at Monday

night’s Matilda Awards. They were the night’s biggest winner, taking home four awards from six nominations, including The Judges’ Award for outstanding theatrical endeavour. Yumpla Nerkep Foundation chair Anthony Ghee said receiving the

Judges Award was the highlight of the night. “That was so unexpected, we are all still gobsmacked,” he said. “We ended the night

with everyone singing Baba Waiar and had a standing ovation that seemed like it went on forever. “I do hope many of our young Torres Strait Island people who have a story to tell, regardless of

how they think it is of little significance – be encouraged by Straight From The Strait and have a go. “Au Esoau to Torres Strait Regional Authority for believing in this amazing story and providing the

funding to actually assist in bringing this musical to the big stage.” Writer and CoLibrettist Norah Bagiri said she was honoured to have worked with the production, and colibrettist Rubina Kimiia. Story continues + more pics on PAGE 10 N
