Waiben enjoys ‘ride revolution’ BY FLORA WARRIA

Waiben community is still celebrating the arrival of 100 new bikes at the boat club on Saturday, thanks to a Mobilise TI community mobility initiative. Organiser, Sarah Tedder, her team and a group of volunteers worked hard last week to put the donated bikes together in time for the official blessing and bike giveaway. Enthusiastic owners of the new bikes took to the streets, as more than 200 people joined the “ride revolution”. Sarah and her team said it was a joy to see. “This project isn’t only about the bikes, it is about the people in general and about getting empowered,” she said. “It’s a way of getting around the Island in a leisurely and fun way at the same time, and not forgetting a way of becoming fit and healthy in the process while enjoying the ride.” Mayor Elsie Seriat joined the celebrations. “This is about encouraging one another

in a way that moves us to relate and connect, with the community, the land, the sea, and the sky, which makes us who we are, in that we are happier, healthier, and free,” she said. “The ride revolution is people power –yumi pipel pawa – we hope this project will continue, to enable more people to get involved.” Patty Solomon has a brand new bike thanks to the project. “It is going to make a big difference to get around town and save on public transport, especially, and to ride around, it is good for your health and to keep yourself fit,” she said. Volunteer Joy Kennedy said she was excited. “It’s exciting now that everybody is going to be out and about on their bikes,” she said. “It will also be a means of saving money, getting fit, having a good time out there and calling out to one another on the road.” More pics on PAGE 4 N
