The Protected Zone Joint Authority has remade the Torres Strait Fisheries (Furnishing of Logbooks) Instrument 2024. The Logbook Instrument requires the master of a licenced boat using that boat in the course of commercial fishing (other than community fishing) to complete a Daily Fishing Logbook. This includes the Transferable Vessel Holder sector of the Tropical Rock Lobster Fishery, the Sunset Licence sector of the Finfish Fishery and the Torres Strait Prawn Fishery.

The new instrument replaces the old logbook instrument. There are two changes to the Instrument. The first is to introduce the new TSF01b logbook for the Finfish Fishery. This new logbook includes some changes to the information being collected. The second is a minor revision to the electronic logbook completion fields. The instrument and explanatory statement detailing the changes can be found at www.pzja.gov.au.

Our Flag, Our Story – a 32-page children’s story that captures the symbolism, significance and representation of identity embodied in the Torres Strait Islander flag – has won a major prize at the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year awards.

“Thomas and I couldn’t be prouder to have claimed the award in this particular category,” Bernard Jnr said.

“The Torres Strait Islander flag means so much to so many people and I’m really happy that the book has resonated with such a wide readership.”

Speech Pathology Australia president Kathryn McKinley told ABC radio they were looking for great books that nurtured children’s reading and language

skills in each of the six categories.

“They are all judged by certified practising speech pathologists for their ability to do that, as well as their pictures and how they engage the reader and promote language and literacy development,” she said.

“I have read all the books and they’re amazing and very engaging.

“I’m really proud of my colleagues and the work they do promoting language and literacy development, and grateful for all the authors and illustrators and the role they play in developing children’s reading, and a love of reading too.”

Lola Digital wins national award

Waiben’s own Lola Digital has won a national innovation award which was presented in Sydney last week.

The Innovate with nbn awards night offered a total prize pool of $125,000 over seven categories and was presented in partnership with the Regional Australia Institute. nbn Chief Development Officer, Regional and Remote, Gavin Williams said their purpose was to recognise those who had lifted digital capability.

“In 2024, we have again uncovered a plethora of passionate regional innovators from across the country, harnessing the benefits of the nbn® network to improve digital participation, productivity and social outcomes,” he said.

As nbn Commercial Indigenous Business winner, Lola Digital was recognised for their support for businesses and organisations in amplifying their key messages, with culturally safe and strategic marketing efforts, in website design and development, graphic design, copywriting and across social media platforms.

“For me, it is validation that Lola Digital is on the right path and now we’re looking to pivot and grow.

“I wish to thank all of our previous and existing clients for believing in us and our services, for trusting our crazy ideas and for always supporting us.

“To potential new clients, we’ll be open for work in 2025 – reach out for a yarn.”

She said their long-term goal was to create sustainable remote work for First Nations people.

“I want to bring quality work into our region through the power of digital connectivity and with NBN’s support, it starts with digital literacy and improving our digital capacities, here lo ples,” she said.

“So the short-term goal for 2025, although it’s already shaping up to be a big year for us, is that we will look to deliver workshops, bring on potential interns and trainees, as well as hire new team members.”

She said anyone interested in marketing and familiar with graphic design should get in touch.

The coordinators learned about digital skills development and promoting IKCs to enhance residents’ digital capabilities and personal skills by using digital programs and learning about digital storytelling, digital art, eSports and pocket cinema.

“Workshops like these were an opportunity for our IKC community coordinators to gain the relevant knowledge about all things digital, which in turn fosters digital inclusivity and along with that preserves, promotes and maintains culture, history and language,” TSIRC CEO James William said.

Pacific Nights a night to remember in Cairns

Pacific Nights, which featured 8/11 Torres Strait performers, was a big hit in Cairns last weekend.

Community assets counted as TSIRC looks to improve services A comprehensive valuation inspection of Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) assets in 15 communities, including Waiben and Cairns, over 13 days has been completed.

TSIRC CEO James William said the inspections incorporated quantitative and qualitative analysis, as well as engaging with residents and local businesses.

“These inspections were led by a Finance

project team of six, which included external valuers, as well as senior management teams, housing officers, regional managers, divisional managers, engineering managers, multi-skilled administration officers, and other council staff,” he said.

“They worked closely with residents and local stakeholders to gain vital infrastructure knowledge for each community.

“In the coming months, the team will collate

the data and conduct workshops with asset class managers to review the findings of the external valuers and validate the information.

“This data will then be sent for audit endorsement prior to its presentation at the council meeting, followed by an update to the council’s financials.

“By combining quantitative data with firsthand insights, we’re laying the foundation for improved services and governance.”

BY HERON LOBAN A new phrasebook for the Kala Lagaw Ya language has been created to help record and preserve the Mabuyaagi dialect.

The phrasebook was part of a project funded by a grant from First Languages Australia and designed to create a resource for adult nonspeakers living away on the mainland.

Elder Gehamat Loban said the phrasebook, to help people learn and connect with language where there was limited access to fluent language speakers, was years in the making.

He said he wanted to learn his language as an Elder living away in Brisbane, a journey which began after attending a series of Kala Lagaw Ya language classes in 2019 and contributing to the creation of another language booklet for a workshop in 2021.

“The phrasebook and audio recordings are an important step in preserving Mabuyaagi, which is listed by the United Nations as a critically endangered language,” Mr Loban said.

He said the phrasebook was created with the help of Mabuyag Elders and community members, language speakers and non-speakers in the

The resources included a phrasebook and companion audio recordings with phrases, modern words, and cultural explanations, making it a tool for both learners and teachers.

“Every person who contributed to the book was a Mabuyag person, making it a truly special project,” he said.

The 2024 Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Conference last week was the largest RAP conference ever hosted

by RA with nearly 900 attendees, Reconciliation Australia (RA) CEO Karen Mundine writes...

The conference was an opportunity to reframe, redesign, and reimagine how we achieve reconciliation justice for First Nations people.

The way we have done things, the things we thought we knew, are now challenged.

First Nations people know what we are doing.

We know what works.

This was reinforced in so many sessions, from so many people.

Fiona Jose, from Cape York Partnerships, demonstrated that we have solutions and we see what can be achieved when communities are empowered, and collective strength enabled.

Former Torres Shire Mayor and Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Chief Executive Officer Vonda Malone,

and current member of the Queensland Government’s now halted Truth-telling and Healing Inquiry, spoke forcefully on the community empowerment structures in place in the Torres Straits.

Ian Hamm, Chairperson of the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation, First Nations Foundation, and President of the Community Broadcasting Foundation spoke on Equity and Economic justice for First Nations as a fundamental right.

He challenged RAP partners ‘to use the economy to the benefit of Aboriginal people’.

The conference was a safe and respectful place to discuss the many challenges facing Australia and the reconciliation movement. Education, Indigenous cultural and intellectual property rights, improving partnerships to realise Indigenous-led outcomes, organisational approaches to truthtelling and building better futures for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth were all addressed.

A lively plenary session on Australia’s problem with racism and our responsibility to act saw a panel of experts from the education, media, and

corporate sectors discuss the courageous actions necessary to confront and address issues of interpersonal and systemic racism.

The conference included the 2024 Indigenous Governance Awards.

Nine small medium and larger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations wowed the conference goers with their stories of success, innovation, and strong governance, proving again that our people are practicing self-determination every day across this huge continent.

The winners, from Tasmania, Western Australia and the top-end of the Northern Territory exemplified how good governance, grounded in culture and pride are creating a brighter future for our peoples.

Disappointingly, this year there were no applicants from Torres Strait Islander-led organisations.

I really want to encourage all organisations in the Straits or on the mainland to consider applying for the Indigenous Governance Awards in 2026.

Let the rest of the country witness Torres Strait excellence!

Kaziw Meta boarders finding their wheels on Waiben

Kaziw Meta boarders are rolling around town on brand new bikes thanks to funding from The Heart Foundation’s Active Australia Grant for their Kaziw Ailan Pedal Power Project.

The students from the Outer Islands have been taking to the streets in the afternoons and weekends, enjoying the thrill of cycling and the health benefits that came with it.

Torres Strait Kaziw Meta CEO Thomas Dunsmore said the bikebuilding sessions were a chance for the Kaziw Meta boarders to show off their practical skills and enthusiasm for learning about bike mechanics.

“As they geared up for their first rides, boarders also took time to discuss road safety, ensuring they hit the roads confidently and responsibly,” he said.

“We would to say to our community and drivers to please keep an eye out for young bike riders as they learn road safety.

“They may make a few mistakes and we thank you in advance for your support and encouragement.”

He said it wasn’t just about keeping their students active.

“This is also about fostering a healthy, active lifestyle that aligns with the spirit of the Mobilise TI movement,” he said.

“The project, managed by

Torres Strait Kaziw Meta, goes beyond the fun of cycling, it addresses important health concerns in the Torres Strait, such as heart disease, diabetes, and mental well-being.

“It also builds valuable technical skills that could lead to career pathways.

“In fact, there’s hope one of these young future bike mechanics might soon take on more training to support bike servicing right here on the island.”

He said support from Alister and Kate Cook of 99Bikes ensured the boarders got handson experience assembling and maintaining their new wheels.

He also offered special thanks to Sarah Tedder, who volunteered her time to support the entire program, helping ensure the initiative was both engaging and impactful for the students.

“Kaziw Meta would also like to extend a huge thank you to John Palmer from Enver Partners, who provided invaluable assistance with the grant-writing process, ensuring this initiative could come to life,” he said.

“This project is more than just about bikes — it’s about building healthier, more active futures for these young islanders and inspiring them to ride strong for many years to come.”

Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ) celebrated the official opening of its new Community Home and Hardware (CHH) store in Bamaga on Monday.

Located next door to the organisation’s IBIS Bamaga Supermarket, the new CHH store leveraged the buying power of leading groups such as Mitre 10, Sportspower and Betta Home Living, offering hardware, outdoor and sporting goods, furniture, whitegoods and electrical appliances.

“We want local trades doing the deliveries, local trades building the furniture, and local people working in the store, with six new jobs already created for the store opening.

“We continue to want to be a partner in community and support local business.”

The official opening began with a Unity Prayer by Pastor Titom Tamwoy, followed by a Welcome to Country and opening remarks from CEQ executives and local leaders, including Northern Peninsula

The CHH store was developed using the space from the previous IBIS Bamaga store and designed as a new concept store to enhance the retail experience for both residents and tourists.

CEQ Chief Executive Officer Michael Dykes said CHH Bamaga’s extensive renovations featured vibrant new colours, updated signage, and a refreshed internal layout aimed at delivering a welcoming shopping environment.

“This new store is a

testament to our commitment to supporting remote communities,” said Mr Dykes.

“By utilising our partnerships and buying power, we can offer a diverse range of products at competitive prices, reducing the costs typically associated with shipping goods to Cape York.

“We’ve also created space in the store for local enterprises to come and sell products they have produced, and we’ve positioned that space right at

Mr Dykes said they had utilised “strategic partnerships and innovative shipping solutions” to reduce the cost of delivering bulky items to the region.

communities,” he said.

“This new store complements the new concept IBIS supermarket we opened last year in Bamaga and represents CEQ’s ongoing commitment to our vision of Caring, every day, always across our remote Far North Queensland locations.

“This store is part of our broader vision to redefine retail in remote Queensland.”

Support for mothers Sherry* was battling substance abuse and suffering from depression when she reached out to FWS, through a local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service. Her family had been impacted by domestic violence (DV) and she could barely afford to buy food or clothes for her children.

FWS helped Sherry create a budget and find support for her mental health through counselling. Sherry’s support worker helped her to improve her self-restraint and develop skills to manage her anger, and they created a family safety plan to prevent further DV issues.

Sherry’s younger kids are now in day care, and they attend playgroup, while the older kids are part of a homework club.

The kids are all thriving as they love learning and being in contact with other children.

“I can now reach out to people, feel supported and know that I am not on my own,” says Sherry.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Wellbeing Services (FWS) support families to safely care for and protect their children. FWS is a culturally safe and free service for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families who have children under 18 living in their care.

The service covers the whole of Queensland, including the Torres Strait Islands and Cape York Peninsula.

Each year more than 4,000 families attend FWS for support with parenting and family issues.

Available to all family members including parents, grandparents, and other kin, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations deliver support based on the family’s strengths and local community needs.

Families facing challenges are encouraged to reach out to their local FWS as support is readily available and only a phone call away. FWS can assist with common parenting issues such as day-to-day care needs, family routines and structure in the home. FWS providers are also experienced in supporting families affected by drug use,

counselling from a local Murri support service.

Sherry now attends yarning circles with community Elders and listens to them pass on their cultural knowledge. She has also completed a course in Mental Health First Aid and is studying for a traineeship to help her get a good job.

Overcoming obstacles Alex* was struggling with homesickness, language barriers and financial issues, while her teenage daughters were having issues engaging at their new

school due to cultural conflicts.

When she first reached out to FWS, Alex was seeking school engagement support for her children but they were able to help her with so much more.

A FWS worker met weekly with Alex’s family in a safe and comfortable space with an interpreter present, so the family could tell their story in their first language instead of English, which is actually their third language.

After Alex also spoke to her FWS worker about her partner’s mental health concerns, they

navigated through the NDIS application process and organised a mental health assessment.

Now Alex attends a women’s group, which has helped her make friends in her new community. Her FWS worker has supported her daughters in their school transition and was able to refer her partner and son to further support for men.

As of this week, the Executive Unit and Business Unit of Tagai State College have temporarily relocated to the other school sites on Thursday Island due to renovations occurring at our Hargraves Street offices. The relocation of the Business and ICT Units has been happening for a few weeks and we have been able to ensure that our services have only been minimally disrupted. We will return to the office site around Easter next year.

Recent campus visits to Warraber and Marbuiag have provided me with further insight into the needs of our outer islands and how the college can provide a better service our many sites.

Kadhego Ngurpay Lag Business Manager Mrs Nolly Griffiths has been spending time with each of our Heads of Campus to ensure a more streamlined approach to budgeting and operationalising the office practices in conjunction with campus Business Managers. This process is designed to build on the capabilities that already exist and to raise the professionalism and service right throughout the college.

I also went to Northern Peninsula Area State College (NPA) recently to affirm the long-standing relationship between Tagai and NPA. This is a much-valued relationship with the sharing of human and physical resources between the two colleges for the mutual benefit of the students. With the recent retirement of their college Principal Ms Leanne Fox, it was also an opportunity to meet with the incoming Principal Mrs Andrea Killen.

The visit was successful and also aligned with the day the Year 7s from Thursday Island secondary were going over for the three-day camp at Loyalty Beach.

Whilst there, our secondary students used NPA’s tents which is an example of cooperation and resource sharing between the colleges.

Our primary campuses are all having their graduation/ award ceremonies and other celebrations as our eldest primary students complete the first phase of their formal education. This is both an exciting and challenging time for them and their families as they look towards 2025 and their new secondary schools.

Congratulations to all Year 6 students from Tagai and all the very best for the new year.

If your child is born in blue, they will be eligible for Kindergarten in 2025.

Indigenous entrepreneurs graduate from TSRA’s You Sabe Business program Last month 13 aspiring Indigenous entrepreneurs from across the Torres Strait graduated from the Torres Strait Regional Authority’s (TSRA) You Sabe Business course, gaining valuable skills and confidence to launch and grow their own business.

The TSRA proudly hosted the You Sabe Business graduation ceremonies in Bamaga and on Thursday Island, marking a significant milestone for these emerging business leaders as well as Indigenous Business Month.

Through a series of free workshops, participants had the opportunity to explore their business ideas, learn essential operational strategies, and gain insights into market engagement.

One of the graduates, Salu Wailu, shared her vision of launching a women’s diving business on Mer, aspiring to provide an alternative income opportunity for women in her community.

“The You Sabe Business program is a great opportunity and opened doors for me in the business space.

I just want to make a difference for my community and give

women other options,” Ms Wailu said.

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM praised the graduates for their commitment and drive.

“TSRA continues to empower Indigenous businesses within our region,” Mr Stephen said.

“I want to congratulate each graduate on completing the TSRA You Sabe Business program.

“Completing these workshops while balancing the demands of family, culture, and community can be challenging, but their commitment demonstrates their passion and drive to succeed.

“The You Sabe Business graduates are paving the way for a brighter future, not just for themselves, but for yumi people.

Bruce looks to inspire with graduation successes Fifteen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander year 12 students from some of Queensland’s most remote communities have been celebrated as the latest cohort of graduates to emerge from Townsville’s awardwinning NRL Cowboys House.

Their achievements and those of their peers were acknowledged in front of the House community including students, staff, family and partners at the annual Awards Night last week.

Bruce Baudu from Yam Island graduated from Ignatius Park College this week.

He was recognised with multiple awards including the Senior Academic Award, Gold Award, Interact (club) Leadership Award and Most Outstanding Senior Boarder (Senior Boys).

Bruce said he hoped his achievements at the House would inspire his siblings and the next generations in his community.

“My family tells me how proud they are and what a role model I am for the community where I’m from and I hold that really close to my heart,” Bruce said.

“I want to go into marine construction or be an auto electrician after I graduate.

“My goal is just to work hard in the years to come to support my family and keep showing the younger generation to never give up and just keep striving for success.”

This was the sixth group of graduates from NRL Cowboys House.

Kirwan State High School graduate Makeilla Gibson, from Cooktown, has been at NRL Cowboys House since Year 7 and was among the first group

of female students to complete their full six years of secondary schooling while at the House.

“The experience of coming to the House in Townsville was very different to home, the community and the schooling was much bigger,” Makeilla said.

“The support of the House staff has been amazing, and the other students are like family, being here has created a lot of opportunities for me.”

NRL Cowboys House General Manager Rochelle Jones said it was a proud day for everyone at the House.

“Some of these young people have been with us since year seven and we have watched them grow into the wonderful, kind and confident young men and women they are today,” she said.

“It’s days like today we truly understand the positive impact the work we do at the House is having on the lives of our students, their families and their communities and we look forward to seeing all they achieve in the future.”

Connie reaches unexpected heights in Nepal

BY CHRISTINE HOWES Two years of preparation have paid off for Waiben-based water policeman Connie Pedro who successfully climbed the tenthhighest mountain in the world earlier this month.

Annapurna Base Camp, which is a 20-minute flight or 10-hour bus ride northwest of Kathmandu, is 4130 metres above sea level in the Himalayas.

He said he and a group of six others did the trek to celebrate former TI policeman’s Shane Mortimer’s 50th birthday.

“It was a birthday trip and it’s a party I’ll never forget,” he said.

“It was his thing, he’d done this before and he wanted to share it with his friends.

“I put my hand up wanting to experience it and didn’t know how it was going to turn out.

“It was an adventure in a lifetime, a once in a lifetime experience.”

He said they had worked on a two-year plan to get there and that preparation was mostly about fitness – Annapurna was well-known for its difficulty and danger.

“There’s a lot of steps and a lot of steep, steep mountains,” he said.

“So it’s more on the fitness side, mainly with your legs.

“Surprisingly on the trek there were older people, pretty much any age group can do this, but you’ve got to be on the fitness side of things.

“But it’s a good experience, I mean it’s not a race, but it’s a busy time of the year – peak season for tourists so there were people on the tracks.

“We went through a company called Take on Nepal, that does a lot of touring to the mountains.

“It was basically from Brisbane to Singapore, Singapore to Kathmandu and then to Pokhara, which is close to the Himalayas.

“From there we went to another little community and we started trekking from there.

“It was a five-day trek all the way up to the base camp, which was very exhilarating and a very good experience.”

He said they were lucky to be there at the best time of year.

“November is probably the best time to go over because it’s autumn, winter kicks off at the end of the month, so it was a bit chilly,” he said.

“The higher you go, the cooler it gets, but it was a very good experience, it was a little bit snowy but only got down to zero, it didn’t go down to minus anything, which was pretty good.”

Overall he said it was fun.

“It was very fun,” he said.

“I mean, I would do it again if I was younger, but I encourage people to do it because it’s a good experience.

“It’s not only the hiking, but it’s going to see places like Kathmandu, they said the population is 10 million and beyond, because every single street, even the side street was just packed with people.

“It was just a bit of an eye-opener, being in a Third World country.

“It’s an experience coming from Australia and you are grateful for what you’ve got and how this country looks after you.

“But I encourage my people to get out there and experience places like this, I even got the chance to take the Aboriginal and Torres Strait flags and put them on the welcoming sign up on the base camp.

“I don’t know if I’m the first TI person there, but there was another lad with us, Quentin Barba, he did Everest base camp and Annapurna as well, so he’s been up there.

“But yeah, I think from me, from my community, I think I’m the first one ever to plant foot up in the Himalayas.”

Barracudas faves for Christmas Cup

BY ALF WILSON The rugby league season may be over but many Torres Strait Islander players and supporters will compete in the Christmas Cup on Palm Island in early December (13-15).

A total of 14 men’s and six women’s sides have already nominated, with visitors to billet with relatives on Palm.

It’s a rich carnival, with $35,000 on offer for the men’s comp if 24 teams compete and $15,000 for the women with six sides.

Barracudas Green team, with several Torres Strait players

and officials, were one of the favourites to take out the carnival.

Fred Bulsey was coach and Evelyn Billy the manager of the side with others including Walter Geia, George Dabea and Esrom Geia.

“We will have a very strong team and the carnival will be good but there will be many great sides,” Fred told the Torres News.

Also lining up for Barracudas Green was former Cowboys back Obe Geia jnr, Queensland Cup star Darnell Geia, Fred Billy, Isaac Bulsey, Germaine Bulsey and others.

Obe jnr was still one of the

most talented rugby league players in the north and Darnell and Isaac were powerful forwards.

Other sides expected to have quality players were Northern Crocs and Descendants.

Visiting sides will come from as far away as Cherbourg, Woorabinda, Yarrabah, Cairns and Mackay.

The carnival was organised

by Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Councillor Telstan Sibley.

The games will be livestreamed and it is expected many footy fans from the Torres Strait and NPA will tune in.

Twenty-one-year-old Dudley Dotoi (pictured) has the “key to the door” of an NRL career after earning a train and trial deal with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Known as “Deadly” Dudley, he will come under the watchful eye of super coach Wayne Bennett, who was widely regarded as one of the best.

Renowned for his sheer speed, Dudley has Boigu connections, an island that has produced many fast footballers.

Elders from Boigu may tell you that was because youngsters ran along the mud near the mangroves.

Dudley might hope to follow in the footsteps of another Boigu Islander – Cowboys forward Reuben Cotter – who was a Queensland State Of Origin and Test representative.

At the Island of Origin last year Dudley played for the Roxin Eagles.

The flying outside back had a great 2024 season with the Townsville Blackhawks where his already uncanny skills were fine-tuned by coach and former NRL star Terry Campese.

Dudley has already started preseason training with the Rabbitohs and could earn a contract for 2025.

The rising star got his first taste of international rugby – and showed good form – when he represented the PNG PM’s XIII against Australia.

Dudley came up against NRL champions Damien Cook (St George Dragons and former Rabbitoh), Luke Brooks (Manly Sea Eagles) and Alofiana Khan-Pereira (Gold Coast Titans) who were members of the Australian PM’s side.

During the 2024 statewide 15-club Hostplus Cup competition,

Dudley scored scoring 11 tries in 13 Blackhawks appearances while averaging a line break and 4.6 tackle busts per game.

In the 2023 season Dudley shone for the Blackhawks Colts side which won the QRL Statewide grand final under coach Roy Baira.

When training with the Rabbitohs Dudley will be guided by wingers Alex “AJ” Johnston and Jacob Gagai.

During the 2024 NRL season Jamal Shibasaki was drafted by the Rabbitohs for one NRL match from feeder Queensland Cup club the Mackay Cutters.

Townsville Blackhawks football operations manager Adrian Thomson told the Townsville Bulletin the two months in an NRL environment would be a huge positive for the young outside back.

“It’s a tremendous experience for him. He’s had a good year, and he’s got himself settled in life. The only way is up for him now that he’s matured, and we hope that the seven-week stint with South Sydney will be really beneficial for him. Coming off the back of the PNG Prime Minister’s XIII game gives him confidence going into that as well,” Thomson said.

League great Wrench Mau’s sons keeping it in the family STORY & PICS BY ALF WILSON In his heyday Dauan Islander Wrench Mau was one of the toughest rugby league forwards from the Torres Strait.

Now his sons Vincent, aged 19 and Naiama, 23, are genuine chips off the old block and following in their dad’s footsteps.

Fleet-footed Vincent played in the Roosters ZKRL premiership side two years ago and also lined up for the club which was eliminated in a semi-final this season.

Vincent has since moved to Townsville and will be snapped up by a club in the strong competition there.

Naiama is a private in the Australian Army based at Darwin and plays for Nightcliff Dragons in the comp at the NT capital.

“Dad is a role model for me and I remember watching him play for Argun Warriors which won the 2013 Island of Origin on Badu,” he said.

“I was in primary school then.”

I first met Wrench back in 2008 at the Badu Island of Origin when he lined up for Western Bears which had a combination of players from the outer islands.

I spoke to the now 52-year-old Wrench on 9 November when he had just returned from fishing on Duaun.

“I speared a couple of big sea mullet and also got red emperor, barramundi and king salmon,” he said.

“There are also plenty of mud crabs in the mangroves.”

Wrench said he started playing rugby league on Waiben for Roosters at a young age.

Asked who he rated amongst the best players he had seen in the region he answered quickly.

“Back Steven Singleton and forward Garreth Smith,” he said.

Wrench has been a PLO on Dauan for more than 20 years and

said he loved the job and his island.

A highlight of his career was being in the police side which took out a carnival at Mount Isa in the early 2000s.

“There was some good footballers there but also being in the Argun Warriors team which won that Island of Origin,” he said.

Wrench’s mother Margaret Mau, a respected Dauan woman, was a Health Co-ordinator for the Top Western region.

These days Wrench helps with Dauan teams which compete in Allblacks carnivals.

He also keeps in close contact with his sons and follows their football careers.

“I am very proud of both my sons,” he said.

NBL takes on ‘innovative’ reconciliation plan The National Basketball League has announced two key new initiatives to help strengthen its reconciliation journey in the wake of the season’s Indigenous round.

The initiatives were: • The commissioning of a new official NBL Indigenous Artwork, painted

by Luke Penrith, a proud Wiradjuri, Wotjobaluk, Yuin, and Gumbaynggirr Nations man.

• The NBL was also proud to launch its new Innovate RAP. NBL First Nations and Inclusion Manager, and proud Palawa woman, Kellie Langmaid said the new initiatives were significant.

“We have been on a journey to ensure the

NBL makes a significant, meaningful, and lasting impact on First Nations communities and these new initiatives are an important step in our path,” Kellie said.

“Our Innovate RAP carries on the lessons learnt from our Reflect RAP and is about implementing change.

“The RAP outlines a deep understanding of how the NBL can help positively influence the First Nations community, and the actions we have committed to in order to reach those outcomes.

“Identifying and fostering future talent is a key theme of the RAP and has been the driver behind two important initiatives.

“We are proud to have launched a talent identification program in Queensland, while

Sareka follows in the path of greatness

BY ALF WILSON Former Queensland State of Origin representative Stephanie Mooka is certain the best form is yet to come for her talented niece Sareka Mooka.

That’s high praise when you consider Sareka played for the Cowboys NRLW side for the past two seasons, was a member of the Mackay Cutters which took out the 2023 BMD Statewide women’s premiership, represented PNG at the Pacific Championships and the Indigenous Allstars.

Speaking to the Torres News from her home in Cairns earlier this month, the 33-year-old Stephanie had no doubt Sareka would go on to bigger and better things in the game.

“The Cowboys have been playing Sareka in the front row when she has mainly come off the bench,” she said. “PNG has her in the second row and I think that is her best position – she is one of the hardest runners and best tacklers around.”

Stephanie kept in close contact with Sareka and had played for and against her in recent years.

“We lined up in different sides in a Goldstars trial a while ago and I can attest to how well she tackles,” she said.

“Then in 2023 I went down to the Koori Knockout in NSW where we both played for the Newcastle Yowies.”

Sareka was also glowing in her praise of Stephanie.

“Aunty Steph is my role model,” Sareka said.

Gifted sportswoman Stephanie has excelled at rugby league, Australian Rules, basketball, netball, volleyball and running, and even shone in rugby union and football (soccer).

Stephanie has played at numerous rugby league carnivals such as Waiben’s Zenadth Kes, Badu’s Island of Origin, Townsville’s Bindal Sharks, Redcliffe’s Arthur Beetson Foundation Murri Knockout, the NSW Koori Knockout and at the Mackay and Cairns Allblacks.

Stephanie also played in the NRLW women’s comp and represented Queensland

NBL referees also wore Indigenous uniforms designed by the family of Abraham Knox, a much-loved young man lost too soon, and Nathan Patterson, called Yeeram Nyoo – just one more day.

A special Spalding basketball featuring Luke Penrith’s artwork was used during all games.

She was also with the NQ Goldstars in the Statewide ladies rugby league comp.

Stephanie started as a runaway back and later on moved to the forwards with equal skills.

But along the way she has suffered some bad injuries including a ruptured MCL in her right leg back in 2021.

“At the recent Indigenous Allstars carnival in Cairns I played for a Boigu side and had another injury,” she said.

She said her highlights were many, but one stood out.

“It would have to be making the Elite Top 30 rugby league Squad with an opportunity to play in a world cup,” she said.

“I ended up pulling myself out of the elite top 30 in 2020 to help my family through a tough period.

“So I took a break to refresh my mind.

“During 2021 I was trying to see if I can have another crack at NRLW then I ruptured my MCL.” I can fondly recall first seeing Stephanie

She was a tearaway speedster with exceptional rugby league talent and won the sprint up the football field to claim the fastest woman in the Torres Strait title.

Stephanie started off playing in the centres but as the years progressed she switched to the forward pack with equal determination.

In 2019 she lined up with the St George Dragons for the NRLW competition playing one game.

The Brisbane Broncos ladies side also tried to sign her up.

Stephanie hopes to get back to Mabuaig in December to catch up with her family and friends.

“I haven’t been there for a few years,” she said.

U15 Sapphires undefeated champions

BY VELMA GARA The Sapphires are U15 Oceania Cup Champions after defeating New Zealand 93-44 on Saturday.

They were undefeated in the weeklong tournament, with convincing wins against Guam and Samoa. They just beat NZ by three points, 71-68, then defeated Tonga in the semi-finals.

The Australian boys’ team, Crocs, defeated New Zealand, 96-68, and were crowned Oceania Cup Champions.

The Oceania Cup was an opportunity for national federations to claim the title of champion, with the two top finishers securing a position in the 2025 U16 Asia Cup. The games also serve as qualifiers

for the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup. IN OTHER NEWS Kerry Williams celebrated his 100th game as an assistant coach for the Cairns Taipans in Round 8 of the National Basketball League.

He coached Cairns Marlins in the NBL1 competition and was a former Taipans player and junior representative at Cairns Basketball.

Williams also holds an assistant coach role with the Australian Boomers team who have travelled to Thailand for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifying Tournament.

They will play Thailand tonight and the Korea Republic on Sunday (24 November). Games will be live-streamed through the FIBA World Cup webpage.
