02 NEWS Ezra goes into rehab facility

Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam has entered a rehabilitation facility after being involved in a head-on collision while allegedly driving unlicensed last Friday.

Ezra was taken to hospital after the car he was driving collided with an Uber carrying three people. He allegedly returned a positive result to a roadside drug test as police await the results of a second test using blood samples.

The 21-year-old, who has family on Waiben and Hammond Island, has played 57 matches for the Broncos since 2022. A genuine rising NRL star, Ezra scored three tries for the Broncos in last year’s grand final.

Ezra has the support of family and friends, as well as former Broncos champion Corey Parker, who has urged the club to stick by him.

Feedback invited on TSRA’s draft youth strategy

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) is excited to announce the release of a draft Zenadth Kes Inner Island Youth Strategy, aimed at capturing the voices and views of our young people aged 12 to 25 who are living, studying or working in the inner islands of the Torres Strait.

The draft provides a strategic framework for enhanced opportunities, strength and support in the delivery of culturally responsive and youth-centred programs, services and policies to improve options and opportunities for young people in the region.

This work was the culmination of input, advice and information received from extensive community consultations, including the voices and views of young people submitted through the Zenadth Kes Youth Survey in August 2024.

The draft Strategy’s foundational principles of Culture, Identity and Well-being were identified as core priorities and enablers for success across key areas of focus, including cultural knowledge and guidance, voice and

change, exploration and participation, opportunities and options, being connected and holistic health.

TSRA’s Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen encouraged all community members and stakeholders to submit feedback on the draft strategy.

“Your input is invaluable as we work together to create a supportive environment for our young people,” he said.

“We believe that by actively listening to our youth, we can develop a strategy that not only meets their needs but works to mobilise effort by all respective agencies and departments delivering or supporting youth services in the region.”

All community members and stakeholders were invited to provide their feedback via the TSRA website by 5pm next Thursday 31 October 2024.

BY CARLI WILLIS Wakaid Tribal Council is set to be the first grassroots organisation in Queensland to establish a remote haemodialysis or renal unit for their community.

The federal government has signed an agreement with them and committed $3.5 million toward the project build.

A historic meeting, hosted by the Tribal Council on Badu Island on Monday brought

stakeholders and community together to discuss the next phase of the process.

Project partners Flinders University, KPMG, Barbara Schmidt & Associates, Federal Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health Ged Kearney, Queensland Senator Nita Green, Cook Labor candidate Matt Smith, the TSRA, health workers and other government reps were among those who were there.

Kempton raises freight questions

BY CHRISTINE HOWES Several claims by LNP candidate for Cook David Kempton – including that freight charges have increased by 42 per cent and the IBIS store was receiving $800,000 a month since freight subsidies were introduced – have been disputed by Sea Swift and Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ).

In a statement received by Torres News on Sunday evening, Mr Kempton said there had been overall increases in the cost of many essential items since the subsidy was introduced at the CEQ-managed IBIS store on Waiben.

“The catch is, that not only essential items but everything from cars, boats, building products, goods and equipment are freighted to the islands by sea and the only freight company is Sea Swift which is 100

“Sea Swift freight charges have increased by 42 per cent ... a boat owner was recently quoted $22,000 to freight his leisure craft from Cairns.”

Sea Swift Executive Chairman Chris Pearce said they were a commercial organisation, not a Queensland Government body and nor were they Australian Government-owned.

“There was not a 42 per cent price rise for our general customers,” he said. “Sea Swift’s scheduled rates have

increased on average 5.4 per cent per year over the past five years, due to inflationary pressures, cost of goods and operations, and the deterioration of infrastructure in the Outer Torres Strait Islands.”

He said the personal vessel mentioned by Mr Kempton, “took up the space of eight containers, including length, width, and height”.

Mr Kempton also said the IBIS store on Thursday Island had been receiving “about $800,000 per month since the subsidy was introduced”.

CEQ CEO Michael Dykes said that was inaccurate.

“Under the Remote Communities Freight Assistance Scheme, CEQ is reimbursed for the savings we pass directly to customers at the cash register,” he said.

“Claims that the IBIS store on Waiben (Thursday

Island) is receiving around $800,000 per month since the subsidy was introduced are inaccurate.”

Mr Dykes also said the claim that costs had risen due to the implementation of the Remote Communities Freight Assistance Scheme was false.

“All food retailers who elect to participate in the approved locations, not just CEQ, are part of the Remote Communities Freight Assistance Scheme and all must follow strict cost reporting rules to prevent price increases,” he said. “This ensures transparency and guarantees that customers receive the full benefit of the freight subsidy. Any price variations customers may have noticed on some goods are due solely to manufacturer or supplier cost increases, which are passed on to CEQ, just as they are with any other retailer.

“Any claims that the cost of essential items at IBIS stores has increased due to the implementation of the Remote Communities Freight Assistance Scheme are false.”

Mr Kempton said it was time for “double dipping” to stop.

“The final insult to injury was when I saw a receipt from IBIS for a loaf of bread and six rolls for $25, which included a freight rebate, where in fact the bread and rolls were made on Thursday Island,” he said.

Mr Dykes said some bread and rolls sold in the IBIS store on Waiben were sourced locally.

He said they included in the freight discount “because local suppliers still face freight costs to bring goods to the island”.

“Excluding these local products from the discount would harm their competitiveness,” he said.

Countdown to polling day as Torres Strait and Cape communities gear up for 2024 State election STORY BY TALEI ELU An early voting centre at Port Kennedy Hall on Thursday Island has been offering all Queensland residents the chance to vote early in the 2024 Queensland State Election, regardless of their home electorate.

The booth was open this week from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, after opening for early voting last week.

Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) rep and Torres Strait Islander Quentin Barba said it was important to have an early voting centre in the region, particularly for the transient population.

“We know a lot of people in

the Torres Strait move around frequently, so having an early voting centre here helps ensure everyone gets the chance to vote,” he said. “I encourage everyone to take advantage of early voting and avoid the last-minute rush.”

The 2024 Queensland State Election was set for this Saturday, 26 October,

and voting was particularly important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who could help shape Queensland’s future.

Remote polling teams travelled to the outer islands over the past two weeks to ensure outer island communities also had the opportunity to cast their vote.

If you need assistance to vote due to an impairment, or insufficient literacy level, or you cannot physically attend a polling place, you may consider telephone voting.

Call 1300 912 782 within Australia to register if you are eligible. Telephone voting will be open from 8am to 6pm AEST until tomorrow.

Registration for phone voting closes at noon AEST on Election Day, so don’t delay if this is the best option for you.

An important thing for everyone to remember when voting is to number every box on the ballot

paper in the order of your preference.

If you don’t, your vote will be considered informal and won’t count.

On Election Day, polling booths will be open at four different places in the region from 8am to 6pm.

Screen Qld signs up to reconciliation agreement

Screen Queensland has launched its first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) alongside its new 10-year Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Screen Strategy, Beyond the Screen 2024–34.

Speaking at the launch event in Brisbane last Thursday, Screen Queensland’s Head of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit Danielle Ah Boo said it was the start of a new momentum.

“Together, Beyond the Screen and our Reflect

with the wider sector to open doors, create pathways and amplify First Nations talent across all areas of the industry.

“Doing so not only creates more opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practitioners, it enables us all to build a stronger, more resilient and representative screen industry for Queensland.”

To develop Beyond the Screen: a 10-year Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Screen Strategy, Screen Queensland conducted

RAP are more than documents, they represent our commitment and our blueprint for a new beginning,” she said.

“Today is where Screen Queensland invites the sector to step into this vision with us, one where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices don’t just join in – they lead, innovate and inspire.

“We welcome and encourage the industry to join us in ensuring that First Nations screen practitioners and games developers aren’t just represented, but that

they are elevated.”

Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said the development of the agency’s first RAP and the creation of Beyond the Screen had been a pivotal part of her time with the organisation.

“Today we are putting words into action and setting a benchmark for the sector as to how we can better support and celebrate First Nations voices in film, television, online content and digital games,” she said.

“Our agency’s role over the coming decade is to work

extensive industry and community consultation over 12 months, initiated by First Nations consultant Cameron Costello before the strategy was completed by Danielle Ah Boo. The resulting strategy was developed by Screen Queensland with a focus on empowering and elevating Queensland’s First Nations practitioners through the four pillars of creative pathways, igniting potential, enabling creators and shaping the future.

Traditional language possibilities were explored in depth at the third annual Queensland Indigenous Languages Symposium; Yuuingan Dhilla Yari (meaning friends, basket, talk in Yuggera language) held in Meanjin in August this year.

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) representatives John Morseau and Amanda Manuel from the Culture Art and Heritage Program joined First Nations language speakers, language workers, academics and cultural leaders for a full day of keynote presentations, panel discussions and workshops.

John facilitated a key session and was a panellist on Protocols for using Indigenous Languages where he shared successful outcomes from the Zenadth Kes Language Symposium, hosted by the TSRA in May. “Bringing our languages into everyday use is about more than words - it’s about keeping our cultures alive and empowering the next generation,” Mr Morseau said.

“This event was an incredible opportunity to share the work we’re doing in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area regions, and learn from other language leaders across Queensland, “It is our privilege to promote and prioritise the integration of First Nations Languages into

literacy programs for all ages.”

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said collaborative effort from cultural leaders and Governments was crucial for traditional languages to survive.

“The TSRA is committed to supporting our language leaders in navigating the evolving protocols for the ethical and respectful use of Indigenous languages,” Mr Stephen said.

Sessions allowed for discussion around common challenges, including the ethical use of traditional language in publications, media, and community programs.

“Similar challenges were raised at the Zenadth Kes Language Symposium,” Mr Stephen said.

“The TSRA has actively supported initiatives like the Torres Strait Traditional Languages Association (TSTLA) to help in developing education and policy to increase the awareness and usage of our traditional languages.”

Amanda described the atmosphere at the event as similar to a family reunion.

“This symposium reminded me that the work of maintaining our languages is something we do together, as family and community,” Ms Manuel said.

“Together, we are paving a path forward to ensure our languages continue to thrive.”

BY CHRISTINE HOWES Locally-owned air charter company Torres Strait Air celebrated a couple of milestones last week.

Typically low-key, the celebrations drew interest at federal level with guests including Hallmark Aviation director and Tecnam sales executive Michael Loccisano and the National Australia Bank’s (NAB’s) head of Indigenous Business banking services, Noel Prakesh and FNQ Business Banking Executive - Regional & Agribusiness Division Coen Heslop.

“We were a little bit concerned with the fires that we had there,” Torres Strait Air director Daniel Takai said. “But it was a beautiful day.”

Last year, Torres Strait Air committed to acquiring eight new aircraft and transitioning to a predominantly net zero carbon emission fleet within the next five years.

“Last Tuesday, we had the official launch of two new Tecnam Traveller aircraft, they are multi-engine 11-seater aircraft,” he said.

“So we can carry up to 10 passengers, and we’ve been introducing these aircraft into our operations in the Straits, focusing on Kubin, Badu and Yorke Island, where they’ve got the longer of all of the strips in the Straits.

“That’s so our team can demonstrate to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) the performance of the aircraft, and we’re working with them to introduce the aircraft into Saibai, Yam,

“And these aircraft will out-perform our existing aircraft type, the Britten-Norman Islander, in that we’re uplifting nine adult passengers out of those ports.

“Whereas with the other aircraft, even though they had nine passenger seats, we could only uplift six.

“So there’s a huge savings for our clientele as well.”

He said they had also opened a new hangar.

“And we also officially opened the hangar because we’ve also got aligned with our flying operation, a new maintenance organisation,” he said.

“I was so proud the other day to be standing there with my family and all of those that were associated with it.”

He said the NAB had supported their growth, as had Gold Coast-based flying school, White Star Aviation.

“So we can grow our own pilots,” he said.

“We have a successful cadetship program and we had nine of our pilots present at our ceremony – five of whom were a product of our cadetship program.

“And we have just been advised by the

flying school that we have the application of our first female cadet, and she is Indigenous.”

He said it had been a long journey.

“It has been such a fantastic journey,” he said.

Daniel’s own family – his wife Rhonda (Chief Financial Officer) and daughters Naomi (Head of Aircraft Airworthiness and Maintenance Control) and Larissa (Quality Safety Manager) – were integral to the business.

“Naomi is the person responsible for the safety of our aircraft in ensuring that they’re airworthy and safe to fly.

“Our second daughter, Larissa, is our Quality Safety Manager.

“They’re both qualified auditors, and they’ve done the necessary courses.

“Naomi is not an aircraft engineer, but she did the interview with CASA and they approved her for the position.

“To my knowledge, she’s the first First Nations person in such a position.

“I’ve got no qualifications other than a CEO of my own companies and director shareholder.”

He said their aspirations moving forward were for the company to become an asset for all Torres Strait Islanders in the form of a collective ownership.

“For it to become one hundred per cent owned by the Torres Strait, not myself as a Torres Strait Islander/ First Nations person, but maybe a local Council or another public company,” he said. “In five to 10 years, I want to have the company in a position where that entity will be able to take on the full ownership of all of the assets and the operational businesses behind them.

“I’m not in it for me.

“I’m trying to just ensure we’ve got the right foundation for the future of the Torres Strait because there are only two ways that we can travel up there.

“It’s either by air or by sea.

“And we’ve identified over the years that the safest way and the most efficient way is by air.”

He said their priorities were passenger comfort and reliability, and also carbon emission reductions by having more efficient engines and newer engines.

“I’ve been looking at opportunities with electric propulsion and also hybrid and hydrogen for years, but of course, we’re still many years away from that,” he said.

“I don’t think I’m special or our company is special.

“But what we’re trying to do, and I think what we have been able to achieve, is we’ve opened the eyes of those who can see this potential to provide a high level of aviation safety up in the Straits.”

A decade of Indigenous Business Month and Blayk Coffee First Nations-owned and operated business Island Stars Café was the perfect setting to honour the growth of Indigenous entrepreneurship over the past decade with a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Indigenous Business Month and Blayk Coffee on Waiben last Friday.

More than 26 stakeholders, local business owners, and aspiring entrepreneurs gathered for the occasion, coming together across various industries from construction to arts and crafts.

Members of the Department of Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities & the Arts (DSDSATSIP), Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA), TI Community Justice and the Office of the Commissioner Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa (OCMOKK) were all there to support the local business community and hear about how Indigenous businesses have “made their mark”.

TSRA and participants of the You Sabe Business Workshop also attended, which included businesses and entrepreneurs from outer island communities.

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen said economic development in the region was important, as was the ongoing need to support Indigenous business.

Executive Message Jeff Jones, Executive Principal Over the first two weeks of the term, I had the opportunity to visit five outer island campuses. In the first week, I traveled to both Kubin Ngurpay Lag and St Paul’s Ngurpay Lag campuses. At Kubin, I met with the P&C and TSIREC to discuss future initiatives aimed at improving campus infrastructure. Head of Campus, Mrs. Jodie Whelan, made sure I understood the urgent need for action at the campus. At St Paul’s, HOC Soozi Wilson treated me to a performance by their combined orchestra, led by Mrs. Helen Saveka, along with some delightful dancing and singing. I also had the chance to engage with the P&C and council, and it was heartwarming to witness the students’ enthusiasm for their learning at both campuses.

Last week, over two days, I visited Kadhego Ngurpay Lag (Saibai), Malu Kiyay Ngurpay Lag (Boigu), and Dauan Ngurpay Lag campuses. Accompanied by Head of School Yolanda McLean and Deputy Principal for Inclusive Education Zoe Molgaard, we had a productive visit to Saibai. The newly appointed Head of Campus, Ms. Myree Sam, organized a large group of community representatives to discuss what is working well and potential opportunities for the campus.

I was thrilled to visit Kadhego Ngurpay Lag on Thursday, October 11, for my first campus visit this term to see the newly appointed First Nations leader, Head of Campus Ms. Myree Sam, who hails from the community. Jeff and I were able to witness the aftermath of the recent fire that roared through the community, damaging a vehicle and impacting the water pipes essential for the area. We also explored the little dams where small crocodiles reside, reminding us of the importance of safety and the need to build positive relationships within the community.

The highlight of the visit was the energetic start to the day, where we joined staff and students in a parade and dance as part of the Exercise, Breath, Blow, Cough, Wash routine that kicks off each morning. Following this, we walked through all four classrooms and observed students engaged in their literacy blocks with the incredible support of their teachers and staff. The calm atmosphere in each classroom was a demonstration to the effective routines established by the teaching teams.

Well done to everyone involved!

As the Head of School, this was my first direct line management experience with Kadhego, and I was eager to hear from elders and community members about “what was going well” and “what we could improve.” It was a privilege to listen to their aspirations for the campus, particularly their desire for it to be fully immersed in their language, culture, and traditional learning methods passed down through generations.

During our discussions, the importance of bilingual education was emphasised. Research shows that bilingual education can enhance cognitive skills, promote cultural awareness, and improve academic performance among students. By integrating local languages into the curriculum, we can create a more inclusive learning environment that respects and celebrates the rich heritage of the community.

I learned so much in the brief time spent with the elders, parents, and community members, and I am eager to return and support Myree in bringing their vision to life. A special thank you to Myree for facilitating this visit and to the staff for their warm welcome, allowing us to engage meaningfully in your learning environment.

Addressing Attendance Challenges: A Guide for Parents At Boigu, it was impressive to see students demonstrate a deep understanding of their Positive Culture for Learning initiatives, which are clearly woven into the successful framework led by HOC Mr. Keith Pabai. The visit to Boigu was unannounced, and I plan to engage more formally with TSIREC and the P&C during my next visit.

The following day, I spent time on Dauan, where I met with Councillors and other community leaders. Arriving early allowed me to witness the students’ leadership during their morning routines, which set a positive tone for the day. HOC Mr. Ben Malpas articulated his advocacy for the campus and outlined the support needed from the college to assist staff effectively.

I was pleased to observe consistency in the implementation of Systematic Synthetic Phonics across all three Top Western campuses. This approach is foundational for literacy using Standard Australian English. Additionally, I received feedback from the community expressing a strong desire for traditional languages to be taught, ensuring that the rich culture of each community is integrated into the schools’ practices.

The leadership team of the college, along with TSIREC and central office staff from the Department of Education, held a well-attended consultation meeting at Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Lag (Thursday Island Primary).

This meeting addressed the potential extension of hours for State Delivered Kindy (SDK) on Thursday Island.

There will be no changes to the structures in 2025, with a further feedback session scheduled for October 31st at 5 PM in the library to explore future possibilities. Any decision to extend SDK hours at any campus of Tagai State College must be made and implemented before the end of 2026 to ensure continued funding.

As we review our attendance statistics, we want to share some important insights and encourage your involvement. Currently, four of our campuses have maintained an attendance average above 80%, while seven campuses have averages above 70%. While this is encouraging, we have observed a concerning decline in overall attendance across the College.

This year, we have seen a drop in attendance of 5.3% from Term 1 to Term 2, 3.8% from Term 2 to Term 3, and 4.5% from Term 3 to Term 4. In total, this equates to a year-to-date decrease of 13.6%. Such a significant change in attendance performance indicates that we need to take proactive steps to improve the situation.

To address these challenges effectively, it is crucial for our Heads of Campus, Teachers, Teacher Aides, and Student Welfare Officers to collaborate closely with specific students and their families. We believe that by working together, we can identify the root causes of attendance issues and implement targeted interventions.

We encourage you, as parents, to engage in open conversations with your children about the importance of regular school attendance.

Your insights into any challenges they may be facing can help us provide the necessary support.

Our collective goal is to achieve an attendance target of 90% for each campus. This will require a united effort from the entire school community, focusing on the factors within our control that can influence attendance positively.

Let’s work together to ensure that our students attend school regularly, giving them the best opportunity to succeed. Your support is essential in helping us achieve this goal. Thank you for your commitment to your child’s education.

Literacy We’re excited to report that our literacy program at Dauan is making great strides! In the latest round of assessments focusing on reading skills, over 70% of our students demonstrated improvements in at least one area, whether it be accuracy or fluency. Even more encouraging, the majority of these students showed progress in both categories, with no students experiencing an overall decline. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of both our students and teachers!

Our students engaged in thoughtful discussions about how these sounds interfere with their focus and learning opportunities.

They came up with insightful challenges and practical solutions to minimize these distractions, fostering a more conducive learning atmosphere.

AFL Visit to Dauan Campus We were thrilled to welcome back Kieran from AFL QLD during Week 2. Kieran has been a consistent visitor to our Dauan campus for the past three years, bringing valuable insights and support to our program.

A special thank you goes out to our incredible teaching team and supportive parents for encouraging our students throughout this journey. Your unwavering commitment and enthusiasm are invaluable in fostering an environment where our children can thrive.

NAIDOC Celebration We are excited to share that we celebrated NAIDOC Week at the end of Term 3! This special event provided our students with a wonderful opportunity to engage in various cultural activities that highlight the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and achievements.

Additionally, we recently completed our reading screeners, and we are pleased to report progress in this area as well. Our focus remains on enhancing both accuracy and fluency in reading.

This term, we are excited to delve into the topic of sustainability. Our students will engage in persuasive writing, learning how to effectively convince others of the importance of caring for our environment. We look forward to seeing their creativity and passion shine through in their writing!

Throughout the week, students participated in a range of creative workshops, including weaving, painting, collage, and cooking. These activities not only allowed them to express their creativity but also to learn more about Indigenous traditions and practices.

We are proud of the enthusiasm our students showed during NAIDOC Week and the valuable

ISLAND TRANSFERS Queensland Government takes steps towards land BAMML directors and families attending the handback in Cairns.

Resources and Critical Minerals, highlighted that the hand back is an important step in the government’s commitment to reconciliation and healing.

Witnessed by Cairns families, Susanne Stone, Executive Director of the Department of Resources handed to BAMML directors a leather-bound folder with the legal documents that show that the BAMML PBC now owns the islands on behalf of all Badulgal and Mualgal People.

Torres Strait Islanders already consider that they own their uninhabited islands. However, under Queensland law, uninhabited islands are owned by the State of Queensland, even if there is a native title determination of exclusive native title over the islands.

The 11 islands were part of the Badu and Moa People # 2 native title claim which was determined in April 2006.

BAMML is the PBC for the determination.

Under Australian law, • The Queensland government is the trustee and owner of the uninhabited islands • The PBC holds native title rights on behalf of native title holders; and • The Torres Shire Council is the local government.

BAMML was only the second PBC in recent years to receive a transfer of islands from the Queensland government. A couple of weeks earlier, on 24 September 2024, Masigalgal PBC was handed over ownership of 8 islands.

Yessie Mosby, at the Masigalgal PBC handover said that the transfer of ownership is what Koiki Mabo was fighting for when he went to the High Court. The High Court only recognised native title, not ownership under Queensland law. The transfer gives the native title holders full say over the uninhabited islands.

Maluwap Nona, chair of BAMML, thanked the State and GBK for their work on the hand back and noted the importance of economic independence and working together on planning for the future.

GBK Chair Ned David congratulated the PBCs on behalf of GBK’s full board. “All islands, uninhabited and inhabited were owned by our forefathers, and are rightfully the property of today’s Traditional owners. No middleman, they belong to Yumi” Looking ahead, the Department has earmarked a total of 40 uninhabited islands for transfer to Torres Strait PBCs.

Culture and dance highlighted at DanceRites

Mackay Torres Strait Islander Cultural Group, organised by Frank Cook, has won the 2024 DanceRites competition in Sydney.

Boigu Island’s Koey Poeypiyam Dance Group was a shared winner of the Rites of Passage awards which acknowledged outstanding contributions to revitalising cultural knowledge and practices.

Last week Mr Cook told the Torres News their entry was made on the spur of the moment.

“It was really a spontaneous entry as our group was doing so well promoting our culture throughout the year in various events,” he said. “[They included] NAIDOC and Mabo Day in and around the Mackay, Whitsunday and Issac Region, and some of our members thought it was a good idea to enter.

“So here we are promoting, influencing and empowering our rich culture to the world.”

He said they had plenty of help with their preparation.

“We have significant Elders in our group that observe and assist with directing the songs and dances,” he said.

“We wouldn’t be here without our Elders guiding us through this journey.

“Our group is made up of different clusters throughout the Torres Strait and of all ages, ranging from a few months old to 70+ years.

“It is a very unique and dynamic group which makes this journey so special as we’re all learning together the different dialects and customs

through stories, songs, dance, cooking, arts and crafts.”

The win was the end result of two days of high-energy competition at the Sydney Opera House.

More than 300 dancers performed in front of record crowds.

An expert panel of judges – Berthalia Selina Reuben (Peiudu and Samsep, Darnley Island), Gary Lang (Larrakia), Sani Townson (Koedal, Dhoeybaw, Samu Saibai Island Zenadth Kes) and Tara Gower (Yawuru) – marked the competitors on their dance skills and engagement with culture, language and song.

The weekend also featured guest performances from Native American group Native Pride Productions, previous DanceRites competitors Maruku Arts Dance Group, and the overall winners of DanceRites 2023 Mui Mui Bumer Gedlam.

Sydney Opera House Head of First Nations Programming Michael Hutchings said it had been an incredible weekend.

“Congratulations to every group and performer who showcased their culture on the Sand Circle and thank you to every member of the community who helped make the event happen or joined us to watch online or on the Monumental Steps,” he said.

“Bringing mob together from far and wide to share stories, song, dance and our living history is a true honour and privilege.”

The next DanceRites competition will be held in 2026.

Townsville High’s 100th celebrates commitment

BY VELMA GARA Townsville State High recently celebrated its 100th anniversary with a sold-out gala dinner and tour of the school.

By the early 1960s, the City Campus, at the corner of Walker and Stanley Streets, was getting many more enrolments so a new secondary school was established on Boundary Street in 1964.

Gubba Nation, Dorothy Savage, was the school’s longest-serving Community Education Counsellor (CEC) from 1979 to 1994.

She became an advocate for the improvement of Indigenous Education and wellbeing and campaigned for curriculum changes and various programs such as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tertiary Aspiration Program.

Finals action After the qualifying rounds the top eight sides were: Goemu Bau Raiders, United Warriors, Coastal Balaz, Northern Chiefs, Erub United Yellow, Dirringhi, Tagalaka Waangu and Malu Kiwai. The Aragun Warriors were 15th, Erub Black 17th and Urapun Thayak 19th.

In the semi-finals Erub United Yellow 20 d Goemu Bau Raiders 10 and Coastal Balaz 32 d Dirringhi 10.

In the quarter-finals Goemu Bau Raiders 28 d Malu Kiwai 6, Dirringhi 30 d United Warriors 20, Erub United Yellow 20 d Northern Chiefs 14 and Coastal Balaz 24 d Tagalaka Waangu 6.

The quarter-finals also produced some entertaining football.

One of the matches of the carnival was a quarter-final between Mabuiag

side Goemu Bau Raiders and Boigu’s red army Malu Kiwai, not reflected in the final score at 28-6.

Goemu Bau Raiders star centre Windsor Bowie celebrated his 30th birthday with two tries.

Robert Amber was dangerous from dummy half for the Raiders who led 12-6 at halftime.

The games were live-streamed and had thousands of viewers from the Torres Strait and NPA communities, Cape York and as far away as WA, Sydney, Brisbane, New Zealand, the NT, Barcelona and Canada.

Hammer nails Player of the Match for Kangaroos

BY ALF WILSON A Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow masterclass performance was a highlight of the 18-0 win by the Australian Kangaroos over Tonga in game one of the Pacific Championships on Friday night.

A crowd of 33,196 was on hand at Suncorp Stadium and millions watched it on the box.

Hamiso was a deserving winner of the Player of the Match award, after scoring his third try in four Test matches.

He was also a thorn in the

side of the Tongan defence, making seven tackle breaks.

The Saibai Islander, known as the Hammer, was tenacious in defence and didn’t miss his chance to score a try in the 52nd minute.

Speedy Hammer brushed off an opponent to cross for

his four-pointer.

That propelled the Kangaroos to a 12-nil lead and they were always going to be difficult to run down.

Forward Reuben Cotter came off the interchange bench at the 29th minute and made many strong runs.

Kangaroos winger and

PNG International Xavier Coates made 23 runs for 246 metres.

The Kangaroos fielded six test debutants and meet the Kiwis in Christchurch next week – they could secure a place in the Cup final with a win.

They will be eager for

sweet revenge after the Kiwi side beat them 30-nil last year.

One of the best for Tonga was lock and Cowboys player Jason Taumalolo who made eight runs for 82 metres in his opening 30-minute stint and finished the night with 125 metres.

Busy Ailan visit for ex-Cowboy Ray Thompson Last week the Cowboys Community team, including former Cowboy Ray Thompson, visited Torres Strait as part of the team’s commitment to connect, engage and give back to the communities who support them.

Mr Thompson travelled with Development Coach Joe Cockshott for three busy days which included a visit to four schools on Waiben and Horn Island, sharing footy skills and the Cowboys’ Way with more than 450 students.

They also delivered a community clinic to the Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) as well as a Try Time! Road to Success module, presented by Streetsmarts and Toyota, to educate young and new drivers about road safety.

Mr Thompson said they were warmly welcomed by the community.

“It was clear that Rugby league, NRL and the Cowboys have a strong connection with the Torres Strait community, and this bond was reflected with how we were welcomed by the community,” he said. “From the moment we arrived, at each school, and at every engagement, there was a sense of excitement and enthusiasm from students, staff, and people of all ages.

“A highlight was witnessing the energy, passion, and talent for rugby league within the schools and the community in general, especially among the youth.

“The students’ energy and enthusiasm were contagious, and it was amazing to see them showcasing their skills.

“There definitely are some future NRL and NRLW Cowboys players within the Torres Strait community.

“These visits help strengthen our ties with the Torres Strait Island community and its residents whilst also inspiring the next generation through positive messages of respect, gratitude, and participation.”

Mya selected for Australian U15 team

BY VELMA GARA Talented basketballer, Mya Moke, has been selected for the Australian under-15s team in the upcoming biennial Oceania Cup – crediting hard work and family support for her success.

When it was announced she had made the squad, Mya’s initial reaction was excitement, but then knew she had to work hard from there to make the team.

She said her parents had kept her on track with her training and given her the right opportunities.

“I would attend individual and group sessions, have a personal trainer and conduct fitness training at home,” she said.

Mya was a key member of the Queensland South U16 team who were crowned national champions in July this year, making her eligible for the selection.

She played either the point or shooting guard roles.

Her strengths are shooting and a high basketball IQ on the court.

She has worked extra hard on her ball-handling skills too.

It was to be her second training camp in Canberra this year, so she was already familiar with the facilities and could focus better on the training camp.

In August, she was one of eight Queensland First Nations

athletes who attended the inaugural National Indigenous Performance Camp at the Centre of Excellence.

Basketball Queensland (BQ) Diversity and Inclusion Officer – First Nations Simon Taylor said there was a high representation on the BQ High-Performance Program, all with promising futures ahead of them.

He said they all had the potential to play College Basketball, NBL1, WNBL and even higher.

Australian teams, the Sapphires and Crocs, will attend the Oceania Cup tournament, hosted at the Australian Institute of Sport on 11 – 16 November and featuring teams from Guam, Samoa, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Fiji, New Zealand and Tonga.

The tournament was last held in Guam in 2022 and Australia is the reigning champion in both men’s and women’s competitions.

Erub United Yellow runners-up in Gordonvale

BY ALF WILSON A well-drilled Coastal Balaz defeated Erub United Yellow 31-16 in the grand final of the Gordonvale Allblacks carnival on Sunday.

A total of 24 men’s teams competed at the QRL-sanctioned carnival held at Alley Park Gordonvale against the backdrop of the Pyramid.

The winning team pocketed a juicy $30,000, while the runners-up

claimed a handy $10,000.

Erub United Yellow and Black were two of six Torres Strait teams in the competition who were Malu Kiwai, Goemu Bau Raiders, Aragun Warriors and Urapan Thayak.

The star-studded Coastal Balaz included many of the players who were in the Elsie Thompson Memorial team who won the Bindal Sharks carnival in Townsville the week before.

The prime movers in the victory were crafty back Addo Waianga,

forward Jordon Ah-One Remfrey, dummy half Kierran Moseley, Aidan Day and centre Bernard Lewis.

Veteran Addo kicked to perfection in general play, Kierran created scoring opportunities, Jordon made many strong runs including several line breaks and Bernard’s speed was dynamic.

Best for Erub United Yellow were clever back Julian Christian who shone throughout the carnival, hooker Jayden Hodges, James Frazer, Wallace Charlie, Joshtel

Charlie and Gideon Gela-Mosby.

It wasn’t long into the final before Coastal Balaz scored through rampaging forward Jamaine Stanley.

The final was played over two 30-minutes halves with drink breaks during each because of the hot conditions.

By the 19th minute Coastal Balaz, organised by Celestino Ross, had scored another converted try and led 12-nil.

At half time Coastal Balaz led 16-6 and it was game on.

Flier Bernard Lewis showed great pace to cross for Coastal Balaz and the lead blew out to 20-6 before an Erub try reduced the margin to eight points.

But Coastal Balaz scored two more tries to one, and just before full-time Addo potted a field goal to make it 31-16.
