Waiben celebrates Fiji Day STORY AND PIC BY CARLI WILLIS Culture and contribution were celebrated at a Fiji Day event last week, which was organised by community members who raised funds and ran the event themselves. Respected Zenadth Kes Elder and Rotuma descendant John Abednego said it was an important way of strengthening culture. “We normally celebrate Rotuma day, and now with this Fiji day, it strengthened the two countries,” he said. “Rotuma and Fiji – one Polynesian side and one Melanesian side, they come in and share here. “There are language and cultural protocols here in Torres Strait, which is good because there’s a lot of descendants here.” Mr Abednego said he encouraged all Melanesian and Polynesian families in the Torres Strait to ‘relive’ their customs and culture. “That’s an important part of recreating, reliving for those families that came here a long time ago,” he said. Mr Abednego said he was worried about cultural erosion in the Torres Strait and in Indigenous cultures across the world.
