Calls for better school security STORY & PICS BY CARLI WILLIS Queensland Police Service are appealing to witnesses who may have any information about “significant damage” caused to nine classrooms at Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh (Tagai State College primary school) last weekend. The break-in was thought to have occurred late last Friday or early on Saturday. TI Community Justice Group Coordinator Amos Lewin said while crime often spiked during

school holiday seasons, the community felt it was escalating and it was time to act. He said he had been calling for a locally-led night security service, separate from the police, for a decade. “I think it’s very important, and the police agree with the concept,” he said. “It’s just having the funds to get it off the ground and then the community [to] support [it] as well. “I think it’s a need, it comes up all the time, we hear it all the time.” Whilst the age of the group responsible was not yet known,

he said the same issue came up nearly every school holiday. He said youth services should be a priority and would benefit the whole community. “One of the other important things is to have an established hub that will require all the services to put in and provide services to the kids after hours, or whatever that may look like,” he said. “Not just when stuff goes bad, but also for interest wise or whatever the kids need support within the community.” Continued PAGE 6 N
