A community clean-up day on Badu late last month – with more to come across the Zenadth Kes – came with more than just rubbish collection with the engagement of the

Marine Debris Task Force, led by Salty Monkeys and the Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC).

Salty Monkeys founder Dennis Fay said they were keen to make it fun and

engaging, especially for youth.

“The youth are the ones that are going to take it over in the future,” he said. “We want them to be involved and engaged in the day, and make it an event, so

we put on fun games, food and refreshments as a part of the whole thing, and the education behind that.

“It’s part of something good for the environment, so we’re making it a bit fun

and engaging for the whole Torres Strait region.”

More than 50 participants collected more than 320kgs of marine debris on Badu.

“We also engaged

other key players in the community, including the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) rangers,” he said.

Indigenous Business awards up for grabs This October will mark a decade of Indigenous Business Month (IBM) promoting Indigenous businesses and how many of them contribute to better opportunities, relationships and ways of doing business in their communities.

Co-founders Dr Michelle Evans, Leesa Watego and Mayrah Sonter said they were pleased to open applications for this year’s Awards which sought to highlight Indigenous businesses under the theme of

Over the past 10 years, Indigenous business numbers grew by almost 75 per cent.

Applications open for ECQ casual roles Applications have opened for nearly 15,000 casual election staff roles needed to deliver the State general election on 26 October.

Temporary workers play a critical part on the front line during elections, helping millions of Queenslanders to have their say about who they want to represent them in state government.

The thousands of casual roles offer work before, on and after election day.

Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said applications were welcome.

“There will be many more roles to fill at this election at our early voting centres and polling booths across Queensland, as we increase the size of our state-wide team,” he said. “We’re recruiting now, so if you’re interested in helping to deliver democracy on the ground and help people to have their say, one of these roles might be a great fit for you.

“Early voting for the

State election will be extended, running from 8am-6pm on weekdays for two weeks before election day on 26 October, so extra staff are needed to ensure voters get the assistance they need.

“You’ll be paid for your work with us, have the opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills, all while getting the chance to see democracy in action.”

Mr Vidgen said prospective applicants should visit the ECQ website to read more about what’s involved, including eligibility and political neutrality requirements.

“Electoral integrity is something we take extremely seriously, so it’s important that our election officials reflect our principles of fairness, integrity and transparency.”

Students set to deep dive into culture The NAISDA Dance College, based in Darkinjung Country, in Gosford, New South Wales, will embark on its annual week-long cultural residency on Moa Island on Monday.

Earlier this year, NAISDA welcomed Cultural Tutors Dujon Niue, Jeanette Fabila, Helen Anu and Masepah Banu who introduced students to Torres Strait Islander culture, from learning dance, movement and language to crafting props and costumes.

Cultural Trainer and graduate Berthalia Selina Reuben said the residency built on their learning experiences and was one of the most anticipated events on the NAISDA calendar.

“One of the most anticipated learning opportunities at NAISDA is the cultural residency program, which we deliver in partnership with our remote communities, Elders and Cultural Tutors,” she said.

“These unforgettable learning experiences are unique in Australia.

“They provide a strong foundation in cultural dance technique and strengthen students’ understanding and connection with Community and Country, empowering them to develop their contemporary practice as independent artists.”

Mayo offers post-referendum guide to ‘what’s next’

Thomas Mayo’s new book, Always Was, Always Will Be, addresses what is next for an Australia that rejected the Voice to Parliament last year.

Mayo –a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man – was a leader of the Yes 23 campaign for the Voice to Parliament last year.

He wrote about his experiences during the campaign and offered a call to action and suggestions that would build on the work done by the volunteers during the campaign.

In the book, Mayo looks at ways to foster resilience, build movements, and develop campaign tactics and strategies with and without financial backers.

Although the majority of the country chose to vote ‘No’ in the October 2023 referendum, nearly 6

million people voted ‘Yes’, and more than 70,000 volunteers around the country actively campaigned for the Yes 23 campaign.

It was, for many people, the first time they had taken part in a campaign, and the first time they’d had conversations in support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the issues they face.

After the vote failed supporters and volunteers asked for guidance as to how they could continue to support Indigenous recognition.

Mayo’s book seeks to address that.

He reminded readers: ‘We won’t take ‘no’ for an answer; we will find a way’ and discussed what that involved on the path toward creating a fairer Australia.

Year 12 students ready to sail through Friday night event

Year 12 students have finalised their menu for this Friday night’s Kai Kai on Malu fundraising event for their Business and Hospitality classes.

Kai Kai on Malu general manager Louise Mills, a Year 12 student, said they had been hard at work.

“We’ve put in countless hours to make sure everything

is perfect, and we can’t wait to share it with our community,” she said.

“Our Hospitality class, under the guidance of Katie Frize and Teriza Muhamad-Mosby, has gone above and beyond in crafting an exquisite menu.

“After finalising the details, we’re excited to offer a variety of delicious takeaway dishes on Friday night.”

She said for $15 there was Coconut Curry Chicken, Honey Soy Chicken Wings, Pork Semur, Sweet ‘n Sour Fish or Butter Chicken, all served with rice.

“Kai Kai on Malu also features Ms Frize and Ms Teriza’s mouthwatering sushi rolls with options including smoked salmon, tuna and chicken and avocado, also priced at $15 for

two rolls per container,” she said.

“If you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t miss out on our Sticky Date Pudding for dessert.”

She said they owed a huge shout-out to their teachers and classmates.

“The time, effort, and passion they’ve put into making this event happen is incredible,” she said.

“They’ve turned our

small idea into a reality, and it’s been such a pleasure to work with them.

“Kai Kai on Malu are committed and ready to take to the waters with pride.”

She said in addition to the food Friday night’s event would feature family-friendly market stalls and a Father’s Day raffle to be drawn at the end of the month.

“Some Year 11 students studying Early Childhood, along with the Year 12s, will be running stalls like facepainting, chocolate toss, lucky dip, and more,” she said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for senior school students to gain experience in working with children and managing stalls.

“We hope to see the community come out in

full support on Friday night and have a great time.

“We’re excited to see what the weekend has in store, and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.”

She said tickets for the Saturday night cruise had completely sold out.

The Friday night event will be held from 6.30pm to 9pm at the Bowls Club.

Free internet program extends to entire region

BY KANTESHA TAKAI Representatives from NBN Co have visited the Torres Strait to discuss planned infrastructure upgrades and announce an extension of the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) until December 2025 as well as the inclusion of all communities across the Zenadth Kes region.

During their visit, executives from NBN Co met with local stakeholders, business owners and services about connectivity issues and concerns, and to set expectations for NBN’s Fixed Wireless upgrades and network

builds taking place in the region.

In attendance was NBN Chief Development Officer – Regional & Remote, Gavin Williams who recognised the importance of connectivity in such a remote region.

“It’s truly been a privilege to spend time in the Torres Strait, meeting with community and stakeholders to discuss connectivity needs of the communities here,” Mr Williams said.

The group also facilitated community events to share digital literacy and encourage families to register SSBI to access free home

NBN internet to help combat connectivity issues.

Mura Kosker Sorority partnered with NBN Co to promote SSBI, with Neighbourhood Centre Manager Lazariah Nona the local point of contact for families to learn more about the program.

“Interested families are encouraged to contact the Buai Mudh Neighbourhood Centre

by Tuesday, 20 August to register,” Ms Nona said.

“We are looking for a minimum of 10 households per community to ensure the initiative will go ahead across the entire region.”

The NBN team also held community

engagement sessions at Badu, Mabuyag, Kubin, St Pauls, Hammond and Horn Island to provide updates to community, understand connectivity issues and promote SSBI. “We’re grateful to have been given the opportunity to spend time here and we appreciate the openness and the hospitality shown to us,” Mr Williams said.

New recycling project on board A recycling initiative aimed at preventing cardboard and pallet wrap from ending up in limited waste disposal facilities has been launched in more than 10 remote supermarkets and stores across the Torres Strait and Cape York.

Nurupai, Warraber, Tamwoy, Iama, Bamaga, Mer, Mabuiag, Wug, Boigu, Napranum, Kubin, Saibai, Masig and Lockhart River were the first of 20 sites planned as part of the Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ) initiative, known as the Resource Recovery Project.

CEQ Chief Executive Officer Michael Dykes said the project represented a significant step forward in the organisation’s commitment to sustainable practices.

“Tying in with our vision of Caring, Every Day, Always, we see it as our commitment to the communities we service and to care for country,” Mr Dykes said.

“Through collaboration, we have been able to implement a practical solution that addresses waste management challenges in remote communities.

“The support from the Australian and Queensland Governments has been instrumental in bringing this project to life.

“Working with the Queensland Government to manage this project has also enabled the project to respond to the challenges that these types of projects can face.

“We are also appreciative of Sea Swift’s and NQRA’s commitment to this initiative.

“Together, we are making a tangible difference in preserving

the environment for future generations.

“We are proud to lead this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the environment and the communities we serve.”

Key components of the project were: • Purpose-built containers: Constructed to store flattened cardboard and bundled pallet wrap, adhering to bio-security standards.

• Strategic placement: Containers would be distributed to supermarkets and stores in the Torres Strait and Cape York.

• Efficient collection system: CEQ store teams would manage the collection and preparation of recyclable materials for weekly pickups.

• Transportation and recycling: Sea Swift, a key project partner, would transport the recyclable materials to Cairns.

North Queensland Recycling Agents (NQRA) would then process the waste streams into usable products.

Genomics medicine promises health care revolution

BY JILLIAN BOWIE & CARLI WILLIS The role of genetics and genomics in health care research was the subject of an information session hosted by the Central Queensland University’s Jawun Research Centre team on Waiben earlier this month.

The University was one of 25 successful entities to be funded, with almost $2 million allocated to the Centre for its project: Integrated Genetic HealthCare: Improving Access to Quality Genetic Services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Patients.

The focus of the work was on genetic health care and testing, or genomics medicine, which the university said was revolutionising health care, particularly for people with rare diseases and cancer, by offering prompt and accurate diagnosis, identifying a patient’s risk based on their genes, and providing personalised treatments.

Jawun Principal Research Fellow Greg Pratt, a descendant of the Noonucal tribe of the Quandamooka people of Stradbroke Island, said the information session was to introduce to the community what the project was about, what it meant for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and how their research could benefit our overall health through precision medicine.

He said the science could be used

“The science is still evolving,” he said.

“Its purpose is to be able to work out long-term, what medicines people might best be prescribed and what medications people should avoid.”

He said it could take years for people to work with their GP to find the right medicines and doses to take.

Genetics and genomics testing helped to work that out quicker based on hereditary background and genetics, and essentially minimised the adverse side effects of the medications.

This process was called Pharmacogenomics, or the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs.

“Research is a bit of a contentious space,” Mr Pratt said.

“It hasn’t really had the greatest

reputation with First Nations peoples, because it hasn’t always been done the right way, by the right people for the best outcomes.

“The hope is that much of the research we do going forward will be informed and controlled by community.”

He said the goal of any research was to improve our knowledge about something and then inform better practice.

“Genetics and genomics, to put

it simply, is just understanding that basic coding that we have as human beings,” he said.

“We can actually look at people’s DNA and genetic code to work out if they do have a risk and not rely on people’s own memory or recollection.

“This is important because people react to medicines differently.”

He said the promise of genetic health care was that it would improve quality of life and – potentially – life expectancy.

“Essentially, if we are not at the table, everyone else gets the benefit of it and we don’t get any benefit of it,” he said.

“Access to genetic testing provides us with equitable benefits as our non-Indigenous counterparts.

“If we get treatment sooner, we get the tests and diagnosis a lot sooner, and receive treatment quicker, better and more precisely.

“Then we are more likely to see the closing of the gap in terms of life expectancy and better quality of life for First Nations peoples.”

Unique designs from fashion artists across the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) joined Country to Couture shows alongside the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair at the annual showcase of First Nations textiles and fashion design on Tuesday last week.

Four artists from NPA Arts Centre designed Country-inspired tropical collections of silks, linen, and cotton wearable art garments and accessories to strut Darwin’s sold-out catwalk shows for the first time on their road to building a sustainable enterprise.

In its ninth year, fashion designs selected for Country to Couture had to display a strong collection of stories with cultural integrity of fabric innovation, sustainability and ethics, and cultural authenticity.

Artist Renae Nona joined Joy Tapau, Colina Wymarra and Leighann Ober to showcase their designs on the runways.

Renae said she was inspired by the sea, ailan and nature’s treasures.

She said her favourite design influence was the red wongai fruit, which she used to dye silk fabric.

Enjoyed by her family for generations was a dish of Wongai, coconut milk and flour known as ‘sabi wongai’.

She said it was one of her most cherished pastimes and reminded her of a happy childhood with family on Waiben.

“One of my favourite things to do is to collect wongai with Dad,” she said.

Renae started her career as a graphic artist at the Torres News and served as a police officer in Brisbane and Cairns before joining Queensland Health in administration.

Art was always her passion, however, and as a designer Renae featured other influences from nature in her designs, such as trochus shells, which her granddad had collected for years to supply a button trade of the past.

Renae’s collection included a cotton design that showcased her days crayfish diving with her father in Zenadth Kes – a striking tricolour shift dress inspired by marine seas and coral reefs.

NPA Art Centre Manager Dev Lengjel, and a generous sponsorship by Rio Tinto, successfully secured this opportunity for the artists to develop an NPA Design collection for the event.

“The artists are thrilled to be in the Country to Couture shows to showcase the colourful heritage of the NPA,” Mr Lengjel said.

He said the Gab Titui Cultural Centre would host an NPA display at the art fair with local works from Sandra Kaddy, Norman Young and Agnes Mark.

Rise in STIs prompts call for ‘less prudish’ attitudes to testing A rise in Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) has prompted a warning from health experts who have urged anyone sexually active to be tested regularly.

Behavioural Researcher at RMIT

University Dr Margaret Heffernan said more education was needed, along with a ‘less prudish’ attitude.

“Whilst getting tested for STIs is quick and easy by a healthcare professional, the decreasing rates

in testing levels can be partially explained by system and sociocultural factors,” she said.

“Many STIs are asymptomatic, leading to a lack of early diagnosis and treatment.

“Despite calls

for sexual education programs, the sporadic implementation of education and the trivialisation of sexual values through the media indicate the topic is taboo, resulting in embarrassment, shame and judgment for

individuals who acquire an STI. “In essence, Australians are a society of prudes in our attitudes toward sexual activity.”

She said GPs, parents and teachers needed to be more comfortable discussing sexual health.

“Low levels of sexual health literacy in the population therefore leads to ignorance, acquisition, risk factors and perceived loss of reputation,” Dr Heffernan said.

“Normalising and desensitising sexual

health and treatment is the first step.

“It then requires a determination by peak bodies to prioritise funding of resources to educate, inform, and make STI testing accessible and a routine part of every health check.”

More than a thousand North Queenslanders have had their say on the region’s healthcare future after taking part in the Joint Regional Needs Assessment (JRNA) survey to help shape healthcare outcomes and access to services to the region.

The survey, open until tomorrow, was undertaken by the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN).

Torres Health Indigenous Corporation Chief Executive Officer Renee Williams said it was important to be involved.

“The Torres has different health needs to other areas purely due to the vast distance by land and sea,” Ms Williams said.

“It’s important for people in our region to participate in the survey, so we can look at what programs and services are needed, particularly when it comes to preventative health for younger First Nations people.

“The JRNA survey will capture what’s happening in the Torres and give us clear data and more information around the specific services needed for the communities in our footprint.”

NQPHN Chief Executive Officer Sean Rooney said the responses to date had been extremely informative and it wasn’t too late to be involved.

“It’s important for all community

members to have their say on their region’s healthcare because they are the ones using the services,” Mr Rooney said.

“It’s also imperative that we hear from a wide cross-section of people, including those under 24, LGBTIQ+, First Nations, and older persons.

“Through the survey, you can tell us what’s impacting you and your community, and what your health needs are so we can plan better health services and achieve improved outcomes for all northern Queensland residents.”

Ms Williams said the survey was easy to fill out and did not take long.

Information collected through the short survey would help to develop North Queensland’s first JRNA, a collaboration between Northern Queensland Primary Health Network (NQPHN), and Torres and Cape, Cairns and Hinterland, Townsville, and Mackay Hospital and Health Services (HHSs).

Executive Message Michael Ward, Executive Principal Greetings Zenadth Kes community. When we go to print in this edition of YUMI College News, there will be only four weeks remaining for this school term. Our team are very busy with the planned program, in addition to a range of works and projects being rolled out by the Department of Education.

I implore all readers to continue to assist us with maximising school attendance every day. The winter flu season continues to hit us hard and I know many families have made recent trips away to Cairns, however we need to improve where we can to maximise learning. When it comes to education for our young people, the mantra is “every day counts”.

Our local campus teams will be following up with families. Thank you for your support.

In other recent news, our secondary campus celebrated the success of a book publishing project.

The result is outstanding. At the end of last term, eight students travelled down to Sydney as part of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s (ILF) CREATE Program. Students worked with senior editors from Penguin Random Publishing House to write, edit and illustrate a book from scratch. After five days of workshops, students launched an initial run of their officially published book Sika and the Shell .

Students enjoyed exploring Sydney, especially Taronga Zoo and Luna Park, but they also appreciated the skills and experience they gained from this rewarding opportunity. Only 0.01% of the Australian population are published authors so these kids are among great company! Copies of Sika and the Shell will be on sale to the general public at a later date.

Our really big news, which has been reported in a range of media already, is our receipt of confirmation of a Go for Gold grant to the value of $4.88 million to create an enclosed modern multi-purpose centre at the secondary campus on Thursday Island. Across is pictured the initial design that we submitted in September last year. It fully encloses the MPC, and extends towards the oval, building a state of the art gym, kitchenette, and changeroom facilities. The grant application included new lighting, flooring, and retractable stage for events, and incorporates grand stand seating onto the oval.This is an investment not only in our school and students, but the whole community. I’d like to thank the team from EMVER partners that worked with us to produce the submission, and to the many community partners who wrote letters of support. Thanks also to Matt Tully and Karen Wright who worked closely with me, for the work involved in assisting us to bring this to fruition.

I look forward to seeing you when I am working out and about on our campus sites and in the community in the weeks ahead.

Yolanda McLean, Head of School Tagai College Attendance: A Call to Action Our college attendance target is set at 90%. Congratulations to Badu, Dauan and Poruma who achieved this target in term 1. However in term 2 none of our 17 campuses reached 90% attendance. Ugar showed improvements from term 1 to 2, great work! Despite these small gains, our overall college attendance has dropped from 78% to 74%.

To address this, we are implementing the Every Day Counts Improvement strategy, focusing on a 3-step model to ensure regular follow-up on unexplained absences. Twelve of our campuses currently have very high rates of unexplained absences, which need to be addressed to provide the necessary support and intervention for our students. A special commendation goes to Badu, Darnley, and Masig campuses for maintaining just 1% unexplained absences.

We recognise that improving attendance is not something our schools can achieve alone. While we know that our families value education and understand its importance, we are seeing a decline in students attending school daily and on time. Our leaders and staff are dedicated to improving attendance, but this effort requires a strong partnership with our families.

It takes a village to raise a child, and if we are committed to enhancing the economic development and future success of our children, we must work together. Let us unite in our efforts to ensure that every student attends school regularly and receives the education they deserve.

As the term progresses, the Erub Campus looks forward to celebrating even more milestones in our literacy development. We are implementing the literacy block across the week to give our students the best opportunity to develop their literacy skills.

He said they had several other islands in their sights.

“We’re looking at doing a number of community islands across the whole region,” he said.

“We’ve already done Masig, we’ve done the inner island group as well, Friday Island was an example.

“We’re hoping to

connect and work with the other ranger groups as well, to look at other islands, such as Prince of Wales.

“We’ve done some engagement activities around marine debris on TI with the schools.

“And hopefully an eastern island soon, we’re planning to do that as we get closer to the end of the year when the weather’s a bit better to travel and have people involved and engaged.”

He said special mention should go to Apo Foster and family on Gaubuth for their support, TSRA rangers, KJR and special guests Anya, Jules, Serena and Geoff, CEQ for supplying food and refreshments, TSIMA for their promotional support and Nancy for catering.

• The program will target the dengue mosquito Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

• The program will involve the inspection of yards and premises to include residential and industrial areas by authorised persons.

One beautiful night, when the stars were bright, the croc named Fresha emerged from the water. Seeing a light up shore and smelling the smell of fish scraps had lured his attention from the fantastic night. He moved cautiously up the bank towards the light.

“Weird,” he mumbled to himself. He looked at the tent. It did not draw any attention from the smell of fish. He peeked around the corner of the tent to see a platypus eating the fish.

“Hi,” said Fresha.

“Hola,” said the platypus.

“My name’s Perry, what’s yours?”

Perry asked.

“Fresh,” said Fresha.

“Want some fish?” asked Perry. “Yes please!” said Fresha. I wonder what is in that tent,” asked Fresha. “I don”t know, let’s have a look.”

That morning, a man named Dickson woke up with a surprise on his chest, he was lying on his back in the grass when he noticed Fresha and Perry on his chest.

“Aaah!” cried Dickson. “Bob, call the police! Call the authorities! Call everyone!” he yelled. Bob rushed out of the tent with the phone, calling the authorities.

Bob kept Dickson calm and shooed away Perry and Fresha until the authorities arrived.

“Run!” said Fresha to Perry. They ditched the camp and ran.

Perry and Fresha ducked behind a bush while trying to escape the authorities view, but the authorities saw them. They hopped in their cars and started to drive towards them.

“Aaaah!” screamed Perry as they ran.

“They”re gaining on us,” yelled Fresha.

Suddenly a park ranger car came out of the scrub and blocked the authorities dead in their tracks.

“Oi!” yelled a man in the front.

“They’re a protected species, you jerks!” he yelled, “let them go.”

“Who are you?” asked one of the men in the car.”

“I’m Caitlan from Park Kuloompa in Kanabarra and I”ll call the police if you don’t go!” she said. “Now go!”

“W-w-we don’t want any harm o-kay?” he stammered.

“I don’t want any harm either! Now go!” She picked up Perry and Fresha and returned them home.

“He went that way,” I cried.

The police ran after the robber. The robber was too fast. They ran past apartment blocks.

They ran past barking dogs. Still the police couldn’t catch him. But then they found electric scooters and caught the robber. And they took him to jail. And I kept walking to school.

Reuben shines in NQ Cowboys loss to Brisbane Broncos

Tough Torres Strait Islander Reuben Cotter was amongst the best forwards on the field when his Cowboys lost 42-18 to a Brisbane Broncos side without injured star Ezra Mam on Saturday.

Tristan Sailor was on the interchange bench for the Broncos and had an impact when he came on late in the game.

A sell-out crowd watched the match at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium including many who had travelled from the

islands, Cairns and Mackay.

Kristin Ware, her husband Elia and their son Anjelo drove from Cairns to see the action and took part in the drum march to the ground before the game from the Cowboys League’s Club in the CBD. “We are here to barrack for the Cowboys,” Kristin said.

The Cowboys went into the blockbuster a hot favourite and led 18-12 at halftime.

But the Broncos scored 30 unanswered points after the break.

Reuben was a tireless forward both in attack and defence and looked to have scored a try which was disallowed by the bunker on review.

NBL1 finals this weekend

BY ALF WILSON Skilful Darnley Islander Dantoray Lui (pictured), who scored a try for the Northern Pride in Saturday’s 38-18 win over the Sunshine Coast Falcons, is a genuine jack-ofall-trades for the Cairns-based Queensland Cup competition leaders.

Dantoray came off the bench interchange bench in the 54th minute and scored in the 79th for the high-rolling Pride.

That win snared the minor premiership in the 15 club comp, in which two rounds were remaining.

A large crowd, including members of Dantoray’s family, watched the game at Barlow Park in Cairns.

Normally a fast back, Dantoray played as a lock forward after being used in numerous backline positions this season.

Speaking to the Torres News after the win, Dantoray said he happily played in any position Pride coach Eric Smith required of him.

“I have also played on a wing, in the centres and even in the halves at five-eighth,” he said.

“I ran on against the Falcons when Evan Child came off and enjoyed it.”

Dantoray said early in the game the Pride dropped a lot of ball.

“But in the last 25 minutes we got our game together,” he said.

there was still a job to be done.

“We will be training hard for the finals series and next week have a bye and then travel away for our last round game against the Burleigh Bears,” he said.

The Pride scored seven tries to three and were warm premiership favourites.

It was a prized scalp for the Pride as the Falcons were third before the clash and now sit in fourth.

Pride coach Eric Smith said he was really pleased with the result.

“The game was everything we expected... we played a team coming third who is in good form,” Smith said.

A highlight for the Pride team was wearing the club’s 2014 strip in honour of the team who won the grand final that year.

“I thought it was a nice touch from the club that we played in that strip today, making sure we remember past players,” Smith said.

The team was coached by Dave Maiden, who was there at the game to see it last weekend.

Now-QRL Competitions Manager, Maiden was based in Cairns for many years as a senior northern division official.

He regularly travelled to Waiben, Badu island, NPA and Cape York as a referee at carnivals.

Other games The PNG Hunters scored a narrow 42-30 win over the Tweed Seagulls before a parochial home crowd at Port Moresby on Sunday.

Hunters try scorers were Brandon Nima and Sanny Wabo (two each) Judah Rimbu, Valentine Richard, and Joshua Lau. Jamie Mavoko booted seven goals for the Hunters who are in ninth spot.

There were only five matches in the split round and other results were: Dolphins 46 d Jets 6, Wynnum Manly Seagulls 34 d Norths Devils 16, and Tigers 20 d Clydesdales 10.

Townsville Blackhawks (eighth spot), Mackay Cutters (12th) and CQ Capras (sixth) had byes.

NBL1 North Champions Mackay Meteors, who defeated Brisbane Capitals and were crowned NBL1 North champions two weeks ago, will see if they can continue their success at the national finals on the Sunshine Coast this weekend.

Their win, in two straight games over the Capitals, was convincing.

Winners from all the different NBL1 (North, South, Central and West) regions play teams from Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and West Australia at the finals.

On Day 1 (Friday) the Meteors will play Mandurah Magic from NBL1 West.

In the women’s NBL1 grand finals, Rockhampton Cyclones avenged last year’s loss to the Northside Wizards in three games.

However, the Cyclones won’t be attending the national finals so Southern Districts Spartans will take their place.

Basketball Queensland said they were sorry to see the Cyclones pull out in a statement released last week: “BQ regrets to announce that the Rockhampton Cyclones have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the 2024 National NBL1 Championships on the Sunshine Coast,” they said.

“The decision was made after careful consideration of athlete availability and player welfare.

“With the women’s position now vacant, BQ conducted a process based on the National Ladder System implemented by NBL1 to identify a suitable replacement.

“BQ is pleased to confirm that Spartans women’s team will step in to represent the North Conference at the national championship.”

Spartans will play against Central Districts Lions from NBL1 Central in their first match.

In other news, Meteors head coach Joel Khalu (pictured) has resigned from the Mackay Basketball Association to take up a full-time role with the Illawarra Hawks, in the National Basketball League, as an assistant coach.

Khalu held that position with the Hawks last year halfway through the season.

And in more good news for Khalu, he has been appointed an assistant coach with the U19 Men’s Emus team who will participate in the 2024 FIBA Asia Cup in Jordan.

AFL drops in to New Mapoon kids Free NAIDOC fun run supported by IMF

The Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) has travelled to Thursday Island this week to support the free NAIDOC Fun Run on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning hosted by the Thursday Island Deadly Runners.

A 2-kilometre kid’s colour run and BBQ will be a feature of the event, thanks to the Torres Shire Council.

3-, 5-, 10- or 21.1-kilometre runs (or walks) are open for registration online at bit. ly/3X1VmoU All participants will receive a free commemorative 2024 IMF NAIDOC medal.

Tigers/Suburbs win in ZKRL thrillers

BY ALF WILSON In what was a cliffhanger, Island Roosters Cup elimination semi-final on Saturday at the Ken Brown Oval, Mulga Tigers defeated Roosters 22-20 in front of a large crowd, which included supporters from Badu who arrived in dinghies.

Try scorers for Mulga Tigers were Belano Lui, Zengrey Nona, Celestino Nona and Mauga Nona.

Sharpshooter Zengrey Nona kicked three goals.

Best for Mulga were the ever-reliable Zengrey Nona, Lato Harry-Nona and Rashid Nona.

For the Roosters, who have won the past three grand finals,

Myron Ahwang scored two tries with one to Terence Yusia jnr and Laurie Elisala. Terence Yusia jnr and Laurie Elisala landed goals.

Best for Roosters were Terrence Yusia jnr, Stewart Sabatino and Terrence Mosby.

Roosters now drop out of the comp but it has been a great effort by the club in 2024 as they often faced player shortages during the fixture rounds.

Mulga Tigers will meet Pioneer Knights in next weekend’s preliminary final commencing at 3pm.

Suburbs defeated Pioneer Knights 26-12 in Saturday’s qualifying semi-final.

For Suburbs George Gabey and Susami Ketchell were the try

scorers on the official sheets.

The other Suburbs try scorers and goal kickers were not available.

Standout players for Suburbs were Susami Ketchell, Chastyn Bowen and George Gabey.

For the Olsen Sailor-coached Knights, Tremayne Asera and Nabil Warrior scored tries. Nabil Warrior and Dabus Mauga booted goals.

Best for Knights were Tremayne Asera, Nabil Warrior and Edwin Aniba.

Suburbs will have a week off and advance to the 24 August grand final against the winner of the Mulga Tigers versus Knights clash.
