Ailan artist the Premier’s pick at CIAF BY BEL LUI Bamaga-based Saibai Island artist Joel Sam is this year’s winner of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair’s (CIAF’s) Premier’s Award for Excellence. Local Cairns MP Michael Healy and Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch presented the award. His very excellent exhibition was of a mawa (mask) he created which tells of a dreamtime story of the Umai (Dog) clan from Saibai Island. His family’s paternal lineage was from a character Wamaladi, who disguised himself (not good-looking) to attract females. But his true identity was revealed and he was driven out from the community. The horns on the mask indicated the birds (crows) trying to eat themselves out, and the story goes that he himself, when hunted, turned into a crow (bird) and flew away up to the Western Province of Papua New Guinea.
