Remote jobs program into second stage of consultations About 200 remote communities and more than 2000 people, including community, employers, corporations, councils and other stakeholders, offered feedback to the Remote Jobs and Economic Development (RJED) Program consultation over the past few months.

The new program was set to replace the current Community Development Program (CDP) in the second half of this year.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Minister for

Indigenous Australians Linda Burney announced the new scheme in February.

They said the new program was about self-determination through economic and community development.

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) member for Warraber Iris Billy represented the Torres Strait on the First Nations reference group who have worked with the government on the process of setting up the new program.

Early findings from the first

round of consultations included: • There was a positive response overall to the new program and how it could contribute to jobs in remote communities.

• Communities were interested in a range of jobs from hospitality and trades to tourism and community services.

• There was a need for capacitybuilding of community organisations and a strong desire for youth engagement and local control of job creation.

The next step in the process was to accept feedback on the guidelines for grant opportunities – known as Grant Opportunity Guidelines (GOGs) – to create jobs in remote communities.

“The RJED program will be run through a grant process,” the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) said.

“Potential eligible employers will be required to apply for a grant to create jobs in remote communities.

“Jobs proposed under the RJED

program will need to support community priorities and be a new position that cannot be supported through other Government funding.”

New renal dialysis unit for Badu

Badu will get a new renal dialysis unit under round two of the Australian Government’s Better Renal Services for First Nations Peoples initiative.

Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians, and for Indigenous Health, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, made the announcement late on Tuesday, saying the Badu facility and two others in remote WA would make a significant difference to the lives of people needing dialysis and their families.

“Dialysis saves lives” Minister McCarthy said. “[These] new renal dialysis units will help to reduce the distance patients have to travel to receive dialysis and

ensure people receive the care they need while remaining on Country close to family and community.”

The combined funding for the three new units was $10.35 million.

Each would have four dialysis chairs and be supported with workforce accommodation.

They were the latest to be funded under a $73.2 million investment by the Government to support up to 30 dialysis units throughout the country.

Elder Robert ‘Bongo’ Sagigi Snr helped to campaign for a dialysis unit on Badu and welcomed the announcement from Assistant Minister Malarndirri.

Treaties Committee to examine AustraliaPNG security relations The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties held public hearings on Monday this week for its inquiry into the Agreement Between the Government of Australia and the Government of Papua New Guinea on a Framework for Closer Security Relations.

Committee Chair Mr Josh Wilson MP said the agreement would build on existing arrangements and would enhance bilateral ties between Australia and PNG as security partners, friends, and near neighbours.

“The proposed agreement would create a legally binding framework for the two nations to work more closely on mutual security interests such as defence, policing, border security, cyber security, and climate change,” he said.

The Committee heard from witnesses from the Department of Defence, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Australian Federal Police.

Views sought on how to close the digital divide

BY KIRSTIE PARKER Torres Strait residents are being strongly encouraged to share their views on local needs and priorities – and ways to help close – the big ‘digital divide’ experienced

by First Nations people.

Digital inclusion was about having access to affordable internet and an appropriate connectable device/s, and knowing how to use the internet for things like accessing government services, doing homework, online shopping, connecting with friends and family, on-country employment and streaming entertainment.

But First Nations people generally experienced poorer access to the internet, higher related costs and lower levels of digital ability than other Australians.

Members of the First Nations Digital Inclusion Advisory Group (FNDIAG) met with local organisations on Waiben this week but said they wanted to hear from everyone on better ways for government and industry to work with communities to address challenges.

Target 17 of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap sought to close the digital divide by 2026 – something FNDIAG CoChair and Noongar woman Dot West OAM conceded would be challenging because of a lack of baseline data.

For her, digital inclusion was all about self-determination and empowerment for First Nations communities.

“Digital inclusion is a human right, especially in this new age of connectivity,” Ms West told the Torres News on Monday.

“We can’t afford to be left behind.”

She said since FNDIAG released its interim report last year, the Australian Government had provided $68 million towards free community wi-fi in 23 Indigenous communities via the National Broadband Network with the potential to expand depending upon technology and establishment of a ‘digital mentors’ program and a digital tech hub to support communities which had issues.

Manager of Koori Mail newspaper – said if the Government was serious about delivering digital inclusion, it needed to step up and support the First Nations media sector too.

“The bottom line is we cannot do one without the other,” Ms Moran said.

She said every community was different, “so hearing about people’s local challenges is really important” – for example, the experiences of media organisations like the Torres Strait Islanders Media Association (TSIMA).

She said urgent backups had to be available if the technology failed.

“How does it impact things like people out during the day on the boats, access to information on the weather and tides and people’s safety,” she said.

“We know that’s a real risk to people’s livelihoods in places like the Torres Strait if they don’t have that instantaneous access to important information.”

Ms West said FNDIAG was emphasising to government and telecommunications companies (telcos) that for digital inclusion, “you’ve got to provide place-based solutions that are led by community”.

The FNDIAG had two Torres Strait Islander

members –Talei Elu, a Saibai Koedal woman from Seisia at university in Canberra, and Mabuyag Malu Ki’ai woman Dr Heron Loban, who had family connections to Mabuiag and Boigu and was on the First Nations Clean Energy and Emissions Reduction Advisory Committee.

Food security, vegie gardens and safe driving covered The RACQ Foundation’s Community Grant Program has partnered with the Torres Shire Council (TSC) to work on several opportunities with the potential to make a difference in the lives and resilience of our Zenadth Kes communities.

The RACQ Foundation’s team was in the Shire last week assisting with building an aquaponics project on Ngurupai, restoring Frog Gully on Waiben, helping to safeguard the museum’s original artefacts and documents from weather events, and running several road safety education programs across three school campuses.

Mayor Seriat said the commitment of the RACQ Foundation to these projects was heart-warming and “of good pasin”.

“They are funding and donating equipment, trades and a volunteer workforce for all the projects,” she said.

“They are sponsoring one of the 2024 NAIDOC Awards, and their volunteers will assist Council staff in setting up the NAIDOC awards ceremony event.

“Their volunteers and staff will first undertake a cultural awareness program here in

the Shire.

“I welcome this support and their enthusiasm on behalf of our Shire and our people.

“A big Eso. “It is also a great example of Council working in partnership with organisations for the benefit of the entire community.”

Aqua-what?

On Ngurupai, the Foundation team worked with TSC in an in-kind partnership to build an aquaponics project on Horn Island.

The demonstration project was aimed at addressing food security and involved combining the two fields of Aquaculture (fish farming) and Hydroponics (plant raising) into a true ecosystem within a greenhouse built for food production.

TSC worked with Tagai State College for the benefit of the school children, their families, the school and the community.

Staff and students have access to the Aquaponics Facilities and project resources for educational programs with the opportunity to develop a curriculum to teach students about science, technology, engineering, arts, agriculture

and maths subjects from biology to physics.

Tagai students were also able to access the facility during school days and holidays provided there was a local supervisor present.

Student involvement in the project may also result in the produce being used for the tuckshop and contributing to a generational change in healthy eating habits and choices.

Frog Gully restored The restoration of Frog Gully on Waiben was something TSC was aware the community had wanted for some time.

The facility once provided space with irrigation and adequate soil for growing fruit and vegetables.

The benefits of a community garden included getting participants active, allowing the growing of fresh vegetables, aiding resilience

and allowing for social interactions that connect the community.

The project involved re-establishing the run-down Frog Gully Community Gardens by replacing or fixing existing infrastructure on-site, including an old shed, improving the soil and installing an irrigation system.

The land was available and approved for this use and the construction of a very simple shade sail/ gazebo and a process for soil enhancement.

TSC planned to budget for a Frog Gully Community Gardens Coordinator position and the committee that was established in 2013 to be re-formed to implement and promote the program.

Road safety education The RACQ Education Team said they were thrilled to be returning to the Torres

Strait to deliver a variety of our road safety educational programs to students in three schools.

Each school enjoyed 12 individual lessons taught across four days to Prep – Year 12 students from across six campuses.

The schools involved were: • Northern Peninsula Area College: Students from all three campuses (Years 5 - 12) • Our Lady of the Sacred Heart: Students from both Waibeni and Kerriri campuses (Prep – Year 6).

• Tagai Secondary State College: Students from Waibeni campus (Years 10 – 12).

The programs were delivered through ageappropriate interactive demonstrations, activities, videos, and discussions.

RACQ Streets Ahead lessons taught to Prep – Year 9 students covered essential road safety themes for students, including pedestrian, passenger (ferry/ car/bus), and wheel (bicycle/ scooter/motorbike) safety.

Year 10 – 12 students engaged in the RACQ Driver IQ Learner Program and RACQ Docudrama Program which were road safety awareness initiatives aimed at educating senior secondary students.

Several proactive strategies were discussed and explored to equip the students with real-world skills for navigating and maximising their time in the learnerdriver phase and transitioning from learner to provisional driver.

Students also explored the ‘Fatal Five’ road safety issues – Drink and Drug Driving, Fatigue, Not Wearing a Seatbelt, Speeding and Distraction – which were the leading causes of incidents and crashes.

Students were encouraged to use the strategies discussed and explored, if, and when, they found themselves in a potentially dangerous driving situation.

Pedal power pick up for Kaziw Meta boarders Waiben’s Torres Strait Kaziw Meta (TSKM) school boarding house has picked up a $50,000 national grant to acquire bikes, racks, helmets and locks for its boarding students.

TKSM looked after more than 60 children from remote islands in the Torres Strait and planned to apply the funds to its Kaziw Ailan Pedal Power Project, which promoted physical fitness and addressed prevalent health issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mental health problems.

The grant would buy 25 bikes for organised riding sessions led by boarders and house parents.

TKSM CEO Thomas Dunsmore said he was very proud of boarding students Mark David from Yam Island and Brian Pearson from Warraber Island, who successfully presented the project idea to the board of Active Australia and The Heart Foundation.

“It’s inspiring to see our future leaders achieve such great things at a young age,”

“Their success highlights the potential within the community and reinforces the importance of these initiatives.”

The grant was awarded under the Active Australia Innovation Challenge (AAIC), a collaboration between The Heart Foundation and the Federal Department of Health and Aged Care, aimed at supporting people who didn’t

meet Australia’s Physical Activity Guidelines, were at risk of chronic disease and lived in communities with high levels of physical inactivity, including rural and remote regions.

“This funding will not only enhance the physical fitness of the youth but also introduce them to the mechanics and maintenance of bicycles, potentially sparking an interest in manual labour trades and future

employment pathways,” Mr Dunsmore said.

“It’s a step towards a healthier and more empowered future for our students. “…Our boarders and their families will greatly benefit from this initiative, and we are excited to see the positive impact it will have on their well-being and overall development.”

The day was hosted by the Warringnu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Corporation last Wednesday at Shirl’s Centre.

Ezra drops in on Innisfail Brisbane Broncos player Ezra Mam added some extra star power to NAIDOC Week celebrations at Radiant Life College in Innisfail last week.

The vibrant event, held last Thursday, featured cultural dance performances, opportunities to meet with representatives from various Indigenous and environmental groups, stalls, and a buffet lunch showcasing Indigenous food flavours.

Ezra took part in a Q&A session and offered encouragement to youngsters present, including many sports enthusiasts.

After the formalities, students lined up for photos and autographs with their special guest and visiting school groups took the opportunity to learn traditional spearthrowing techniques from the Goondoi Rangers.

Principal at the non-denominational, independent Christian school, Nathanael Edwards, said the event was a resounding success and “a day of joy”. “(It) was a wonderful celebration of our First Nations peoples,” Mr Edwards, a MaMu man, said. “We are proud to have hosted such an inclusive and educational event that brought our community together to honour and learn about the rich cultures and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

Wuchopperen Health Services in Cairns hosted a community day last Wednesday afternoon at their Manoora address to acknowledge NAIDOC Day for 2024.

A large crowd attended and enjoyed the entertainment, lunch, food, some great giveaway prizes, and good company.

The outstanding performances from the Minjil Aboriginal dancers, Torres Strait Boigu Island dance group and individual artists were very much appreciated by everyone until late in the afternoon.

One fabulous summer day a girl named Lila went out with her lovely family to go exploring in the forest near the river. They went deep into the forest. It took them one hour to get to the middle of the forest, which was near the river. “Mum can I go to the river?” said Lila. “Yes but only stay for two minutes and then come back because we are going to go back home very soon,” Mum replied. Dad said, “Be careful - it looks like a storm is coming and we don’t want to get soaked.”

“Okay,” said Lila.

So brave Lila walked very fast to the river. When she got there she saw the most mysterious creature swimming in the river. At first, it looked like a dragon but when Lila looked closely it had a huge tail, fins and gills like a fish. It was green and had dark red lines on its back. She had no idea what type of creature it was because she had never seen anything like it. Lila stayed for a bit too long because she was watching the mysterious creature swimming around in the river. It started to rain and Lila was getting worried that she wouldn’t find her way back to her family. Suddenly the mysterious creature splashed its huge tail and Lila fell into the river. Lila realised that unlike other humans she could breathe under the water and could stay as long as she wanted under there.

Meanwhile, Lila’s family had started to look for Lila. They couldn’t find her near the river where they thought she should be because Lila was swimming deep in the river. “Where’s Lila?” said Lila’s little brother Max. Max was three. Max was sleeping when Lila went to the river. “We can’t find Lila anywhere,” said Lila’s dad. Max was very sad and started to cry. “Don’t worry Max we will find her soon,” said Mum. When Lila saw the creature more closely it actually had wings. She couldn’t see them before because they were camouflaged in the water.

Lila realised that the mysterious creature gave her powers to breathe underwater. She knew it gave her this power because the mysterious creature could talk.

Lila walked out of the river all wet and found sticks to make a hut.

She stayed in the hut for the night. Lila’s family had left the forest and went home for the night and came back early the next morning to look for Lila.

When Lila woke up in the morning she walked for two minutes and then found her family. Lila told her family all about the mysterious creature and her adventure. Lila’s mum said, “Are you for real?” Lila’s mum and dad did not believe her. Max walked away to the river and saw the mysterious creature. He walked back to his Mum and Dad and said “Dagon, dagon.” Mum said “What are you talking about?” Max replied “Dagon, dagon”. Lila’s parents finally believed that she saw a dragon.

They then walked home together.

THE 2024 TORRES STRAIT The loudest cheer at last week’s NAIDOC Awards on Waiben went up for the winner of the 2024 NAIDOC Torres Strait Person of the Year Award, Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) Mayor Phillemon Mosby.

Only six months ago Cr Mosby was diagnosed with – and defeated – cancer, but Torres Shire Council (TSC) Mayor Elsie Seriat OAM said there wasn’t a dry eyein the house when Cr Mosby invoked the national NAIDOC theme to urge everyone to ‘Keep the Fire Burning – Blak, Loud and Proud’.

“Everyone was honoured when Phillemon spoke of his commitment, to not only the Masig Statement that guides us to selfdetermination but to the repatriation of cultural artefacts back to their rightful place in Zenadth Kes,” Cr Seriat said.

“He encouraged us all to Keep the Fire Burning – Blak, Loud and Proud, a fitting conclusion to the 2024 NAIDOC Torres Strait Awards evening.”

The Awards night was held at the Thursday Island Sports Stadium last Wednesday after it sold out within three days.

There was a palpable sense of joy, pride and celebration in the air as MC TSC Cr Gabriel Bani welcomed everyone to the event, Father Tom Stephen said an Opening Prayer and blessing, and Cr Seriat delivered the Welcome to Country and an Opening Address.

Performers included the inspirational Bamaga Dancers, sponsor the RACQ Foundation provided servers in the form of a ‘blue army’ who worked side-by-side with TSC staff, and the Night Shift band entertained well into the night, but not before the much-anticipated formal proceedings – presentation of the coveted Torres Strait NAIDOC Awards.

Samuel (Benji) Sagigi and Gavin Bin Juda received a Special Recognition Award for bravery for their quick thinking and selfless actions in responding to a helicopter crash into the Prince of Wales Island channel.

Marsat Ketchell, who has worked for many years with TCHHS helping vulnerable communities,

was recognised for excellence in community and health services.

Solema Luffman was next to be recognised for extending her community advocacy by learning to sign in traditional languages to help preserve them.

Betty Tekahika was recognised with a community tribute award for excellence in community and cultural services in the preservation of the Meriam Mer language, and for her weaving, singing and story-telling.

This year’s Elder of the Year was Robert (Bongo) Sagigi who has spent many years stressing the importance of a healthy lifestyle so as not to become captive to dialysis.

Congratulations Dyral Lui, Torres Strait NAIDOC Youth of the Year.

An inspiring young person, Dyral travels the islands of the Torres Strait as a transition officer for Kaziw Meta in partnership with staff from Tagai Senior Campus, Dyral helps recruit students to attend Tagai and stay at Kaziw Meta College.

As a singer, he was also part of the Ep Karem Beziam Dance Team that travelled to Sydney for the DanceRites in 2023.

A multi-talented jack of all trades, he loves to cook and has his own signature dishes. A positive role model for the younger generation.

Congratulations Alick Tipoti awarded the Torres Strait NAIDOC Artist of the Year Award.

Alick continues to tell cultural stories through art while promoting culture as a family dance team through song and dance. Bringing stories to life: Dhamuw Koedal Dance Team, the only team representing Maluyligal nation (mid-western) at the 2023 Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival.

The team also represented both Zenadth Kes and Australia at the Melanesian Art and Cultural Festival 2023 in Vanuatu. Torres Strait NAIDOC Elder of the Year has been awarded to Robert ‘Bongo’ Sagigi Snr. An active community elder who goes above and beyond to ensure that the community is heard.

It is fitting that his commitment and service to the community over many years is recognised, especially for his advocacy regarding the importance of a healthy lifestyle and not being a victim of dialysis.

Robert was recognised for his Strong Community Advocacy.

Robert accepted the Elder of the Year Award among family and friends to a standing ovation.

Congratulations Robert for your achievement as the 2024 Torres Strait NAIDOC Elder of the Year.

Torres Strait NAIDOC Community Event of the Year was awarded to The Igiliyawa: Custodians of Life 2024 Program (Professor Jaquelyne Hughes and Adjunct Professor Phillip Mills).

20 Torres Strait Islander doctors and medical students recently attended a five-day program here on Country (Waibene) with a ceremony bringing together health leaders, academics and officials including Assistant Minister and NT Senator Malarndirri McCarthy.

This program is a true celebration of the strength and growth of the Torres Strait Islander medical workforce. The program ended with a community engagement morning tea that shared their experiences and journeys as an Indigenous doctor. Today, there are 127 First Nations medical doctors. This momentous gathering is worthy to receive the award. Accepting the Award on behalf of Dr. Hughes and Mr Mills was local resident Ms Deidre Whap.

Business of the Year Award

Torres Strait NAIDOC Sports Person of the Year Award is awarded to Samson Zitha.

Whilst excelling on the rugby league field, Samson is also recognised for his contributions off the field as both coach, referee, mentor and volunteer in both school sports programs and community sports.

Interim club president for Zenadth Kes Rugby League and referee, Samson is an inspirational role model who loves his community and sport.

Torres Strait NAIDOC Business of the Year Award was received by David and Melaney Nona, DNM Cornerstore, Badu Island.

David and Melaney Nona are local Indigenous business owners at Badu Island who operate two small businesses – DNM Cornerstore since 2022, and this year (2024) a coffee van called DNM Expresso, both established without any government funding or support. Theirs is a great story of successful Indigenous free enterprise in a very remote part of Australia challenged by the excessive cost of freight and high cost of living.

David and Melaney were also crowned this year’s NAIDOC King and NAIDOC Queen – a double congratulations to you both.

Introducing Joanna Mari, proud recipient of the Torres Strait NAIDOC Trainee of the Year Award.

With encouragement from her parents Newman and Cheryl Mari, Joanna reached out to Shooting Star Youth Career Services who assisted her in realising her ambition to work in the hospitality/ housekeeping industry.

Taking a leap of faith, Joanna left her home of Warraber in 2023 and is actively undertaking her traineeship interstate and will be completing her traineeship in August this year.

Congratulations to Phillemon Mosby, Mayor of Torres Strait Island Regional Council, being awarded the Torres Strait NAIDOC Person of the Year Award.

Mayor Mosby has worked tirelessly over the last two decades advocating for action on global warming and protection from the devasting effects of climate change on the island communities of the Torres Strait. Phillemon has devoted his life to the preservation of cultural practice, dance and traditional languages, regularly representing the region and speaking at many national and international forums. He is a strong advocate for the repatriation of cultural artefacts back to their rightful place in Zenadth Kes. A strong advocate of the Masig Statement, Mayor Mosby seeks to reclaim the region by retaining Torres Strait islanders’ enduring identity and by regaining Ailan Kastom and cultural practice. An inspirational young leader and a worthy recipient of the 2024 Torres Strait NAIDOC Person of the Year Award.

Veteran Ketchell is a retired serviceman and an active contributor of long standing, particularly to the veteran community, Marsat has worked for many years in the health sector helping vulnerable communities by addressing both their social and emotional well-being. A fantastic role model and mentor for the younger generation, Marsat is justly recognised with the 2024 Torres Strait NAIDOC Community Tributes Award.

Congratulations to ZK Fitness – Harold Matthew who received a NAIDOC Community Tribute Award for Excellence in Promoting Healthy Lifestyle and Fitness in our community.

Harold volunteers his time to run fitness training for the community twice a week for free. Having run the New York City Marathon with the Indigenous Marathon Foundation 10 years ago, today he continues to carry the baton as an advocate committed to Closing the Gap in health outcomes. She has demonstrated extreme excellence in her art, promoting women and the Torres Strait culture across multiple art genres, including fashion, jewellery and painting both domestically and internationally. NPA CULTURAL FESTIVAL 15

NPA unites cultures for a strong future STORY AND PICS BY FLORA WARRIA The sixth annual Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) Cultural Festival was held last weekend, bringing Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal peoples and cultures together in unity and harmony once again under the theme of United Cultures = Strong Future.

The event began with a welcome dinner for visitors on Thursday night, followed by the torch ceremony on Friday.

The Torch Ceremony started at Injinoo, with a customised metal torch, engraved with the names of participating communities, taken through to Umagico (Alau), then Seisia, New Mapoon and finally to Bamaga where it was exchanged between representatives from the two First Nations groups of the NPA. The main street of Bamaga featured beautiful colourful displays of coconut palm and fabric decorations leading onto the festival ground at Geoynaw Yusia Oval.

The 2024 national NAIDOC theme Keep the Fire Burning: Blak, Loud and Proud featured prominently in the march towards and into the festival grounds for the Opening Ceremony led by the Guba Markhai dance team from Bamaga.

A large and enthusiastic crowd was there to greet the torch and witness the exchange under the shade of a famous Ironbark tree which holds very deep cultural significance within the history of Bamaga and neighbouring communities.

The weekend was packed with additional performances by the Coen Band and Dancers, the Neguam dance troupe from Mer Island, the Lagaw Titui (Island Star) dance team from Waiben, Black Koral from NPA, X-Baw from Boigu, ADO from Saibai, Mr Mac from Injinoo.

Special guest appearances

by First Nations comedian and dancer Sean Choolburra, and headline act Kamilaroi singer Mitch Tambo and his band finished the performances and led into vibrant fireworks that lit up the night sky of NPA. The festival was enjoyed by all.

Thanks were made to all the organisers including the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council (NPARC), the workers who toiled tirelessly behind the scenes, stakeholder organisations who held stalls and displays, and other stallholders selling tasty meals.

A particularly significant anniversary was the Mabo Day commemorations. This event is a cornerstone of our region’s history, and we were honored to celebrate it across our campuses. These commemorations not only honour the legacy of the late Mr Eddie Mabo and the Australian landmark decision that recognised the land rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples but also serve as a reminder of our ongoing commitment to reconciliation. The activities and events held during the week reflect our dedication to fostering a deeper understanding and respect for First Nations cultures and histories within our school community.

Thank you once again to all who made Reconciliation Week and Mabo Day a memorable and impactful time for Tagai College.

Departing Tagai College for the final time in August, will be Di Gretton, currenlty Acting HOC at Poruma – all the best Di and thanks for your wonderful contribution with us!.

For those who may be unaware, I will be finishing up at the end of this term on September 12, which will mark almost three years in the role for myself. I will be taking an extended period of carer’s leave and moving to Kingaroy permanently to live with my parents. My final reflections and messages will be shared with you in this column in eight weeks time.

The selection and recruitment process for a new permanent College Executive Principal has already been completed, which included local community input. Mr. Jeff Jones is the successful applicant, currently Principal at Greenbank State School. Mr. Jones will undertake a comprehensive handover process intermittently in the early part of the term, and will move here to begin the role in tandem with me from week 7.

During this time he will accompany me on some of my campus work, attend relevant meetings and spend some time with us at the office. Mr. Jones is excited and motivated about the privilege and challenge ahead and I look forward to introducing him to you.

The Executive Principal position was highly soughtafter, attracting 20 applicants.

Our work remains on track, and I again thank you all for keeping our core business prominent in your focus and valued. Our college priorities remain the same and will continue to guide and sharpen our work – Literacy, Positive Culture for Learning, Collaborative planning and Pedagogy.

Attendance continues to be a concern, so I ask our community to support the college in every way to ensure our young people are at school learning every school day. Throughout this term, our campus communities will celebrate NAIDOC 2024 in various different ways. This is a special time to focus on culture, pride, community and the future for First Nations. Thank you to all who will contribute to these key events.

This term is ten weeks long and concludes for the Spring break on Thursday 12 September due to the public holiday the following day. Note also, that all of our campuses will be closed for the statewide student free day on Friday 30th August. I look forward to seeing many of you as I travel across the college to work with our teams in these weeks ahead.

Masig Students Shine at Regional Principals’ Roadshow Last term, our Masig Muysaw Ngurpay Lag campus dance team delivered a performance that filled us with immense pride at the Regional Principals’ Roadshow. Performing before an audience of all principals in Far North Queensland and senior officers from Central Office, the students showcased their cultural heritage with pride, strength and enthusiasm.

The theme of this performance highlighted the impact of climate change on our communities. Many principals spoke to us during the break, congratulating the college on the performance and emphasising that this important message needed to be shared with other principals and schools across Queensland. The performance carried a message that resonates beyond Queensland and must be shared widely. The passion that our students have for their community was clearly felt by everyone in the audience.

This event is part of a deliberate effort to provide our talented students with opportunities to share their culture with pride to a wider audience. The Masig dance team’s exceptional performance not only highlighted their skills but also celebrated the rich cultural traditions of our community.

A heartfelt thank you to the Masig community, families, elders, Mr. Michael Nai, Mr. David Grant, Ms Laura Billy, Mr McFarlane Warria, Mr Yessia Mosby, Mrs Nicole Van Leeuwen and Ms Kathleen Morries and staff, and all of our students for making this powerful performance possible.

I am incredibly proud of our students and look forward to more such opportunities in the future.

Wongai scores round in Endeavour Cup games TI (Wongai Basketball Association) was victorious over NPA (Kittyhawk Basketball Association) in women’s and men’s games for Round 1 of the basketball in the Endeavour Cup Challenge last weekend.

The games were held at the Thursday Island Sports Complex on Saturday morning with the women’s scorecard ending up at 43 (TI) to 16 (NPA) and the men’s game closer at 54 (TI) to 40 (NPA).

Players expressed their appreciation to organisers and committee members of the Wongai Basketball Association for their support with transport, kaikai and refreshments.

The remaining Endeavour Cup Challenge series games are due to be played on Saturday 3 August at Bamaga.

Mistee wins ‘Best on Ground’ at national talent pathway

Mistee Sagigi was one of 38 Indigenous players selected for the AFL’s 2024 national Woomeras development program.

The program, hosted in Brisbane, showcased some of the top female Indigenous and multicultural talent on display at Brighton Homes Arena, Springfield, last Saturday and was a key step to the national talent pathway.

“The (Woomeras) program aims to provide a platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander females to improve their football and leadership skills through physical training and personal development activities,” AFL Indigenous Programs Talen Lead Ben Davis said.

“The top talent in these games will be selected by an external panel and invited into the AFL 2025 National AFLW Indigenous Academy.”

Mistee performed strongly throughout the game, with her effort, hard-tackling style and confidence a standout.

After sealing the Woomeras win with the final goal of the game, Mistee was awarded the team’s ‘Best on Ground’ honours.

Crusaders in action at North Queensland Community Carnival Last weekend 20 of the Cape York and Torres Strait’s best U14 female AFL footballers travelled to Townsville to compete in the North Queensland Community Carnival.

The Crusaders played four matches against teams from Cairns, Townsville, Capricornia and Mackay in a round-robin style tournament.

The team finished with two wins from four games, a great effort after having met only one day before the event.

The Crusaders’ involvement in the program was proudly supported by the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA), Torres Shire Council (TSC) and Bamaga Enterprises Ltd (BEL).

After going through the Cairns event undefeated the team will take on winning schools from Mackay, Rockhampton and Townsville at Riverway stadium on Tuesday 23 July with the winners progressing to the State Championships on the Sunshine Coast (October).

“The girls have worked so hard to get to this event and they’ve been training well since the Cairns competition,” AFL Cape York Development Coordinator Kieran Sciberras said.

“There were over 300 school teams involved in the program across the North Queensland region, so for this team to even be playing at the North Queensland Championships is a huge achievement.”

Fifita inspires Gold Coast Titans win

A superb performance by barnstorming second rower David Fifita inspired the Gold Coast Titans to a 24-16 win over the Parramatta Eels on Saturday.

Snubbed by Queensland Maroons selectors for all three State of Origin games, David had a point to prove.

David ran for 127 metres with the ball, produced six tackle

breaks and made 23 tackles, including a try-saver on his own line which was vital considering the close margin.

That was despite David being forced from the field for an HIA midway through the second half after a tackle but was cleared to return in the dying stages.

Rated amongst the best forwards in the NRL, David dominated in the first half running more metres than any other player.

A large crowd watched the game at Cbus Super Stadium and it was the Titans’ third win in a row.

Ezra sparks Broncos A try by five-eighth Ezra Mam in the 55th minute sparked a Brisbane Broncos comeback when they went down 30-26 to

St George Dragons on Saturday.

The Dragons had bolted to a 22-6 lead when Ezra crashed over for his try.

The win lifts St George Illawarra into the top eight, while the Broncos languish in 13th spot after six consecutive defeats - a losing streak from which no team has recovered to win the premiership.

Broncos fullback Tristan Sailor dropped a couple of early balls before making numerous breaks after that to be amongst the best.

Both sides were without their Origin stars and 34,224 watched the match at Suncorp Stadium.

Wingers fly x 5 A hat-trick of tries by Jacob Gagai and two by

his wing partner Alex “AJ” Johnston were not enough for their South Sydney Rabbitohs which lost 36-28 to the Dolphins at Kayo Stadium on Thursday night.

Jacob scored in the 22nd, 58th and 79th minutes whilst AJ crossed at the 64th and 74th minutes.

AJ’s second fourpointer was his 193rd in the NRL and he is second only to Ken Irvine who scored 212.

Ironically Jacob left the field in the fifth minute for an HIA which he passed and was one of the Rabbitohs’ best and played out the game with a headband.

Jacob has scored nine tries in nine NRL games including the triple and two doubles.

Deadly Dudley’s last minute match saver

BY ALF WILSON A try by deadly Dudley Dotoi, with just 15 seconds remaining in the game, enabled the Townsville Blackhawks to secure an 18-all draw with the Burleigh Bears on Saturday.

When Dudley crossed, the Blackhawks trailed 18-16 and the Bailey Biondi-Odo conversion levelled the scores.

That was one of two tries speedy winger Dudley scored and his other was in the 10th minute.

Hooker Jayden Hodges, a regular Erub United player at Allblacks carnivals, crossed in the sixth minute.

Jayden has missed games due to injury and made a welcome return for the Blackhawks who are in ninth spot on the 15-club ladder.

Gehamat Shibasaki lined up in the centres for the Blackhawks.

The previous week in round 17 Dudley ran for 230 metres in a tireless performance which earned him an honourable mention in the QRL team of the week.

BY ALF WILSON In one of the most exciting games of the Island Roosters Cup season, leading teams Mulga Tigers from Badu and Suburbs played a 26-all draw at Ken Brown Oval on Saturday.

Both sides scored five tries and kicked three goals as spectators were held in awe and on the edge of their seats.

Mulga try scorers were fullback Belano Lui (two), Thomas Holland, Mauga Nona and Zawa Guligo.

Zengrey Nona kicked the goals.

For Suburbs, winger John Mosby scored two tries, with singles to Ricky Macri and Manuifua Nona.

The other score sheet was not available, but Malachi Songoro booted the three goals.

In the other match at the Rock, Pioneer Knights defeated an under-strength Roosters

12-nil.

Centre Talis Mairu and forward Edwin Aniba scored the Knight’s tries whilst Tremayne Asera slotted the two goals.

It was a courageous effort by reigning premiers the Roosters who had just seven players named on the team sheet.

Next Saturday at headquarters, Suburbs take on Roosters in the first game starting at 2pm, and Mulga Tigers meet Pioneer Knights in the main match with kickoff at 4pm.

After that, one week of fixtures remained before the semi-final series commenced on Saturday 10 August.

The elimination and qualifying semi-finals will be held, followed by the preliminary final a week later on 17 August.

The much anticipated grand final will be held on Saturday 24 August.

Baira shines The second-placed Norths Devils narrowly beat the Dolphins 40-36 on Sunday.

row flying Dolphins winger Brenton Baira was a solid scorer.

Brenton scored a try in the 49th minute and booted four goals for a personal tally of 12 points.

Both sides scored seven tries with the difference being two extra goals by the Devils, a conversion and a penalty kick.

For the second time, Brenton was named in the QRL team of the week for round 17.

“He knows how to find the try line. In eight appearances this year he has scored 10 tries, including another two from the weekend. Against the

Tigers he also ran through 204 metres and recorded two tackle breaks,’’ the QRL website reported.

Hunters win at home The seventh-placed PNG Hunters hammered the CQ Capras 42-28 before a big parochial crowd in Port Moresby.

Hunters try scorers were Joshua Lau (three), Judah Rimbu, Alex Max, Brandon Nima and Valentine Richard.

Jamie Mavoko kicked seven goals.

The Capras side included winger Edrick Lee who didn’t score.

As expected, the last round of the NBL1 North competition saw many teams play their best basketball to get ready for the finals playoffs for 2024.

Darwin Salties defeated South West Metro Pirates by more than thirty points, 113-77, and favourites Mackay Meteors beat Southern Districts Spartans, 112-85.

Townsville and Cairns finished their season on a high with wins – the Heat defeated Ipswich Force 113-85 and Marlins defeated the Force also but on last Friday night 95-87.

Rockhampton have men’s and women’s teams in the finals playoff which was great for the association in central Queensland.

Townsville Flames were the only northern women’s team to continue to the finals playoffs, with Darwin, Cairns and Mackay not successful this season.

This weekend there are only four games.

Tomorrow night, the Flames will host South West Metro Pirates.

On Saturday night: Women – Southern District Spartans host North Gold Coast Seahawks.

Men – Brisbane Capitals versus Rockhampton Rockets and Logan Thunder plays against Spartans.

U15 Goannas win Aus c’ships This year’s Under-15 First Nations Goannas have won the Australian Secondary School’s championships in Port Macquarie.

“What a great way to start NAIDOC Week,” proud dad Bernard Sabadi said of the boys’ achievement.

“The U15 First Nations Goanna’s team won the Pool B grand final against a bigger stronger Victoria Team that beat them a few days earlier.

“They played with all heart for their people.”

He said the team was captained by Badu Islander Kaedyn Ketchell, who was also ‘Player of the Pool B Championships’.

Head coach Dustin Stewart said he was very proud.

“Words can’t express how proud I am of this group of young men,” he said.

“The resiliency and toughness they showed throughout the championships paid off today.

“You all should be proud of the young men you are raising.

“It has been an honour to coach and work with them both on and off the field.

“Congrats again to the boys and families.

“Go the Goannas!”

Deadly Choices a round to remember

Ten children from the Torres Strait experienced a dream come true when they took the Suncorp Stadium field alongside their favourite Brisbane Broncos players at the NRL Deadly Choices Round on Saturday night.

The first-time experience was made possible by Torres Health who chaperoned children from Warraber, Poruma, Kirriri, Ngarupai and Waibene to Brisbane for the electric weekend.

Torres Health CEO Renee Williams said the opportunity was more than just a chance for the children to meet their favourite players, it was a powerful reminder of the possibilities that lie ahead when they made healthy and positive choices.

“It’s a fantastic way to enhance their understanding of the importance of health and encourage positive changes in their communities,” Ms Williams said.

“It’s also a reminder to their families at home that our next generation is dreaming big, and seeing what’s possible when they care for their health and wellbeing.”

The children not only participated in the match, but they also attended the Broncos Captain’s Run on Friday, where

Pic courtesy of Deadly Choices. they received new footy boots and gear from Kotoni Staggs and Ezra Mam. Taye Sagigi was asked to lead the NRLW Brisbane Broncos run-in, alongside Captain Ali Brigginshaw.

Taye’s father Jack Sagigi said these experiences were limited in the Torres Strait, so he welcomed any opportunities offered to his family.

“As a parent, we don’t wait,” he said.

“We strive to give our children every opportunity that we didn’t have growing up.

“What Torres Health and Deadly Choices have done is identify a gap and work towards closing it by giving our next generation inspiration and attainable goals.”

Mahina Nona’s mum, Tahlae Nona travelled alongside her daughter and watched Mahina play against Kowanyama at halftime during the Broncos and Dragons clash.

“Nothing can compare to witnessing your daughter’s dream come true!” said Mrs Nona.

“Mahina is a huge Broncos fan - even against her father’s wishes - and for her to have the opportunity to meet her idols, and the team on their home ground is something she will never forget.

“Watching her take the Suncorp Stadium field and embracing her culture and identity was one of my proudest moments.
