CDP changes welcomed Local Community Development Program (CDP) provider Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea & Land Council (GBK) has welcomed the new federal Remote Jobs and Economic Development program announced last week. The program, which would let communities decide what jobs were created and included a $185 million Community Jobs and Business Fund, was set to replace the CDP later this year. GBK chair Ned David said he looked forward to the reform process. “GBK welcomes the announcement from the Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney, and looks forward to working with her and her Department as the proposed changes are discussed further with our community,” he said. “In particular GBK welcomes the commitment to real jobs, enterprise creation and the opportunity for capital investment in our region. “Given National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) will be coming to the region as part of informing the community of the changes, GBK will be ensuring the voices of First Nations people in the Torres and Endeavour Straits are heard, and that the unique challenges we face are considered as part of the reform process.” A NIAA spokesperson said the Minister was committed to developing a new program in partnership with First Nations People and communities. “The detail and timetable for consultation will be released publicly,” they said. “The NIAA looks forward to consulting with Torres Strait Island communities as part of the upcoming consultation process.” NPA CDP provider NPAWS has been asked for comment and we hope for more information in our next issue.
