‘Fantastic’ festive season for police BY CARLI WILLIS

Thursday Island Police have congratulated inner and outer island communities, saying the 2023 to 2024 Christmas break period saw the regions lowest crime rates in three years. Acting-Officer in Charge Cory Stevens said all types of crimes and offences reported were below average compared to previous years.

police were told New Year celebrations had seen some mess from flour on the wharf, but no damage was reported. “I probably could ask some consideration be held for the wharf [as] flour will get slippery,” he said. “We have got to be conscious of that as well, and be conscious of Ports North [as] there are vessels there that need to respond quickly. “But all in all, no malicious damage with flour.

“New Year, I believe there was one incident we responded to,” he said. “New Year was absolutely fantastic and I think community members should be very proud there were minimal calls for service over that period. “From us, we thank you very much for being extremely well behaved and enjoying that family time. “People made the right choices over that period.” Mr Stevens said the

He said it was notable there was less than 10 occurrences of property crime across inner and outer islands. “In relation to previous

years, that is well and truly under the average,” he said. “Over Christmas and holiday periods, generally across the state, we see a spike in property crime. “Willful damage, attempted breaking, breaking in stolen cars – that’s what we classify as property crime. “That’s why I’m so ecstatic to report that the community has been so great over this period.” Mr Stevens also

congratulated the region on adhering to water safety guidelines during the period, and said there had only been one Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) activation. “Fantastic that they had an EPRIB on board and were being conscious of safety,” he said. “There was no incident, they got it back up and running.
