A fire – thought to have been deliberately lit – passed through the car dump causing toxic smoke over the Waiben community on Sunday night. Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) Chief Superintendent Adam Gwin said a call to report the fire came through
at 8.20pm on Sunday night. By 6am on Monday a ‘prepare to leave’ text was sent to residents on Summers, Loban, Milman and Douglas streets. He said the fire, which was mostly along Milman Hill, was contained but expected to be a smoke hazard for several more days.
“There are certainly some aspects of this fire that would indicate it has been lit,” he said. “We’re currently putting some staff onto aircraft to get them up to Thursday Island. “We’ll conduct an initial investigation into that and see if we can locate where it started, and how it started.” Mr Gwin said it was the second
fire the team had been called to on the island that day, and the causes would be investigated. A fire also burned on Muralag for seven days last week. Emergency services said they expected heightened bushfire conditions to return across the state in the coming days. Local QFES Station Officer
Luke Smith said firefighters used multiple techniques to try to contain the blaze on Waiben. “On arrival, we were met with the front edge of about 400 metres, and it took crews a while to gain an upper hand on the fire,” he said. Story continued P2 N See also CFES call for staff P3 N
