Sea Swift’s newest - Newcastle Bay launched from Cairns

Sea Swift has launched a new ship, Newcastle Bay, from Cairns.

Chairman Steve Boulton said the boat has almost completed all required checks and should be operational sooner than expected.

He said the new purpose-built vessel was bigger and faster than its predecessors.

“We’re investing in the future, and Newcastle Bay will significantly increase our cargo capacity, especially during Northern Queensland’s wet season,” he said.

The Newcastle Bay arrived in Cairns in September.

Meanwhile, Sea Swift has announced the resignation of Dwayne Freeman, effective immediately, after 15 months in the role.

Mr Boulton said

Chris Pearce would assume the role of managing director and acting chief executive of Sea Swift.

“We would like to reassure the communities that rely on Sea Swift that we are operating business as usual, and there will be no schedule disruptions or delays due to any recent staff departures,” Mr Boulton said.

“We will look to appoint a permanent CEO over time but it is not an urgent process, as from a continuity perspective, we are confident we will continue to deliver our strategy of essential freight delivery to our valued customers and communities.”

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has renewed its contract with OMC International Pty Ltd to deliver an Under Keel Clearance Management (UKCM) system for the Torres Strait.

The Torres Strait UKCM system allowed coastal pilots and vessel operators to plan and monitor the safe and efficient passage of vessels navigating through Torres Strait.

This system has been in place since 2011 and was primarily used by AMSA-licenced coastal pilots when transiting vessels through a defined monitoring area within Torres Strait.

The UKCM system calculated, in near real time, the distance between the keel and the seabed, before and during the transit.

The system took into account the height of the tide, tidal streams, vessel speed and the dynamic motions of the ship.

AMSA Manager of Seafarer Certification and Pilotage Grant Judson said the UKCM system was critical to the ongoing safe navigation of vessels throughout the Torres Strait.

“The Torres Strait is an environmentally sensitive area as well as a vital corridor for global shipping and it’s imperative that we ensure that ships can pass through the region safely,” he said.

“The UKCM system plays an important role in providing pilots and masters with highly accurate information about how close a vessel’s hull is to the seafloor.

“The UKCM system is designed to support seafarers in keeping ships safe, and significantly reduces the risk of grounding.

“AMSA is pleased to continue working with OMC International to deliver this important service.”

The existing contract with OMC International was set to expire in June 2024, and the new contract extended for another eight years.

Disabilities group offers human rights training

BY JENNIFER ENOSA & CARLI WILLIS The first Uncle Lester Bostock – Know your Human Rights training session from the First People’s Disability Network (FPDN) was held on Waiben last week.

Uncle Lester, who died in 2017, was a founding member of the FPDN and the workshop bore his name in honour of his work for First Peoples with a disability.

FPDN Training and Engagement Officer Bernard Namok Jnr (pictured below right), who has worked for the organisation for just over a year, said the Waiben community group operated like a yarning circle to discuss their human rights.

“When I first started [this

work] it opened my eyes to the little things that people with disability faced in everyday life,” he said.

He said layers of disadvantage like housing shortages and general access to services in remote places further exacerbated the experiences of people with disabilities.

“It’s understandable that we live in a remote place, but I think talking about the issues, and highlighting them, is a good thing because it’s having a conversation,” he said.

“When you have the conversation, then you go start something.”

Mr Namok said a dozen people attended the session at the TRAWQ Hall in Tamwoy Town. “[Talking] about wanem laws you got in place for people with

disability and also wanem laws you got for families too,” he said.

“So thempla got that understanding wanem law come from the United Nations.”

Australia endorsed the United Nations declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People in 2009 and released a statement in 2021 to say it would work towards implementation.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was signed by Australia in 2007.

“It’s there to advocate for the needs of people living with disability, and also advocating for families on behalf of person living with disability,” Mr Namok said.

He said he had also consulted with families in Seisia about holding sessions there.

BY DARREN MONCRIEFF A total fire ban is in place across the Torres Straits and NPA following a dry dry-season that has increased fuel loads across the region.

A large fire on Muralag was contained last week by firefighters from the Thursday Island Fire Station.

The team worked with local residents to eliminate the threat to nearby houses and structures.

Smoke from the fires could be seen from neighbouring islands and its northerly drift affected people living on Friday Island for a time.

“The fire on POW that is still burning is no longer a threat to houses as of 9pm last Tuesday,” Thursday Island Fire and Rescue Station Officerin-Charge Luke Smith said.

“Thursday Island Fire Station (TIFS) attended the fire on POW and in conjunction with community members we did some back-burning toward nearby structures to eliminate the threat.

“Ongoing efforts by the TIFS saw the clearing of nearby vegetation to reduce the threat.

“We’re at the end of the dry season now with the curing rate, but there is still a high fuel load.

“So if people need to use fires for cooking, please have a fire extinguisher or a garden hose nearby.”

He said there were no current fire warnings for the Torres Strait or NPA, however a fire ban remained in place across the region.

Meanwhile, the state’s Tropical Public Health Service (TPHS) has warned residents in the far north that recent bushfire conditions have resulted in poor air quality and increased health risks.

TPHS Director Dr Richard Gair said communities must remain alert to the health hazards of smoke from bushfires.

“Smoke can cause itchy eyes, sore throat, runny nose, coughing, and worsen pre-existing conditions like asthma and bronchitis,” Dr Gair said.

“Most healthy adults usually feel better once they leave a smoky environment.

“If you have a pre-existing condition like heart disease, lung condition, or asthma, be extra careful.

“To reduce the risk of smoke irritation, stay indoors and keep your windows and doors closed.”

He said it was especially important for vulnerable people to remain vigilant in the current conditions.

Anyone with pre-existing conditions should follow the treatment plan advised by their doctor and keep at least five days’ supply of medication at hand.

“People with asthma should follow their personal asthma plan,” he said.

“Please assist your vulnerable family members, neighbours and friends if required.

“Some locations have cleaner, filtered air, for example shopping centres, community centres and libraries.

World Diabetes Day prompts healthy choices warning

Diabetes numbers continue to climb across Zenadth Kes, Thursday Island Quality Lifestyle Program Advanced Health Worker Olsen Sailor has warned in the lead up to World Diabetes Day next Tuesday (14 November).

“But while World Diabetes Day is a good way to focus awareness, diabetes and chronic disease are issues residents should be aware of all year round,’’

Mr Sailor said.

Primary Health Care Programs North Director Maleta Abednego said Waiben had the largest concentration of people with diabetes in the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service region.

“Thursday Island is home to 381 people with diabetes – 336 of whom are Indigenous people – which is about 14.6 per cent of the total number of diabetics on our register in our health service,” she said.

“Across our region we need to find ways to reduce both the overall rate of diabetes in our communities and the poor health people experience because of the complications of diabetes.

“Proper healthy choices and physical activity can help you avoid getting diabetes in the first place and can also help you manage diabetes if you do have it.

“If people with diabetes eat healthy kai kai, have a healthy body weight, and are physically active they can be strong and healthy.

“Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent form of diabetes,” Ms Abednego said.

“It can usually be managed by maintaining a healthy weight, with medication when necessary.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are particularly

at risk of developing diabetes and this genetic predisposition is compounded by a range of other factors such as generational disadvantage, poor nutrition, obesity and lack of exercise.

“If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person it is three times more likely that you will have Type 2 diabetes than

your non-Indigenous neighbour.

“The other thing about diabetes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families is that it occurs at a younger age in Indigenous families and can be preventable.

“If not managed properly, diabetes can lead on to end-stage kidney failure, which would then require

people going on renal dialysis for life, unless they can have a kidney transplant.

“It makes sense, therefore, for us to do everything possible to reduce the rate of diabetes in our communities, as well as to assist those with diabetes to self-manage so that they do not develop complications.”

“All air conditioners should be switched to ‘recycle’ or ‘recirculate’ mode.

“If you do not have an air conditioner, take steps to reduce heat stress, especially for the very young or the elderly.”

Dr Gair said if there was a break in smoky conditions,

people should take the opportunity to air out their home to improve indoor air quality, and minimise other sources of air pollution such as cigarette smoke.

“Schools and childcare centres should consider ceasing outdoor activities and children should stay indoors in areas with air-conditioning and/or ceiling fans,” he said.

“Organisers of outdoor events, if possible, should consider postponing the event until air quality improves.

“If you are experiencing any adverse reactions to the dust or smoke, such as shortness of breath, prolonged coughing or wheezing, seek medical advice.

Climate change case to be heard in Melbourne A smoking ceremony was held before the landmark Australian Climate Case resumed hearings at the Australian Federal Court in Naarm (Melbourne) this week.

The focus of the hearings was to be on evidence provided by climate science experts, as a follow on from On-Country hearings in Zenadth Kes earlier this year. Between now and the end of this month the court was expected to hear from leading climate science experts on the impacts of climate change and sea level rise experienced in the Torres Strait.

They would also examine Australia’s contribution to global carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions.

Guda Maluyligal plaintiffs Uncle Pabai Pabai and Uncle Paul Kabai from the Boigu and Saibai islands have made the journey to Melbourne to hear more about the science behind the climate harms experienced by their communities.

In October 2021, faced with rising sea levels and inaction on climate change, Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul filed the Australian Climate Case against the Australian Government for failing to prevent climate change.

Yesterday the Federal Court began hearing from expert witnesses addressing the climate harms being experienced by Torres Strait communities on the frontline of Australia’s impending climate disaster.

Expert witnesses included: • Professor David Karoly (world leader in atmospheric climate science) • Professor Linda Selvey (health expert) • Terry Hughes (marine biology expert) • John Church (sea level rise expert)

• Professor Malte Meinshausen (evidence about Australia’s contribution to global carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions) • Stuart Bettington (evidence on current and future impacts of climate change in the Torres Strait and adaptation options in the Torres Strait)

Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul sought orders from the court that required the Federal government to take steps to prevent this harm to their communities, including cutting greenhouse gas emissions in line with the best available science.

The Australian government had a 2050 ‘net zero’ emissions target, which experts said would not be enough to prevent disaster in the

Torres Strait.

Leading climate scientists on the climate targets panel calculated Australia’s greenhouse emissions needed to be reduced by 74 per cent by 2030 (from 2005 levels) and to net zero by 2035 to keep global heating to below 1.5C and avert the destruction of Torres Strait Islander communities.

The Australian Climate Case was supported by Grata Fund and the Urgenda Foundation, and backed by a strong international precedent.

In 2015, the Urgenda Foundation and 886 people took the Dutch government to court for not doing enough to prevent climate change and won.

The courts ordered the Dutch government to take immediate steps to cut greenhouse gas emissions and, thanks to this groundbreaking legal action, the Netherlands has some of the strongest climate policies in the world.

This case triggered a groundswell of litigation internationally, with more than 80 similar cases filed around the world resulting in real-world emissions reductions in Germany, the Netherlands and elsewhere; meaning that the pressure was on the Australian government to act.

Beware of flying foxes It’s flying fox breeding season in far north Queensland and public health authorities want everyone to know some simple tips.

Public Health physician Dr Richard Gair said the good news was flying foxes and other bats were important native animals and helped with pollination and controlling insect pests.

“The bad news is many people don’t like them and complain about noise and smell around roosting and breeding sites,” he said.

“Councils can sometimes help if bats are creating a nuisance.”

Fear of bats was not justified if they were left alone, Dr Gair said.

“Not touching bats is essential because their complex immune systems tolerate viruses that can make other animals or people sick,’’ he said.

“The big disease is Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV) which is bat rabies.

“Anyone bitten or even scratched by a bat need a series of injections to prevent a fatal illness.”

Dr Gair said that any species

of bat could be carrying ABLV even though the bat may look normal.

“Bats are very cute up close, so people want to rescue them,’’ he said.

“During breeding season, you are more likely to find fallen pups or sick or injured bats, often stuck on a wire fence.

“They will bite straight through gloves or a towel, so don’t risk it.

“Call a trained and vaccinated wildlife carer to help.

“Our message is simple: don’t touch a bat.

“Any type of bat, adult, or pup, sick or well, dead or alive.

“Keep children away too.

“It’s just like snakes: protected native animals, but you wouldn’t pick them up.”

Anyone bitten or scratched by a bat should immediately wash the wound, apply antiseptic and seek urgent medical care.

First Nations engagement advisor wrapped with new role

BY JENNIFER ENOSA & CARLI WILLIS Bamaga man Tommy Sebasio has been appointed to a newly created role of First Nations Engagement Advisor within Ergon Energy Queensland, a role which means he will talk directly to communities about transitioning to renewable energy and managing their electricity Mr Sebasio started his apprenticeship with Ergon in Bamaga out of high school and would eventually go on to manage the power station.

In 2010 he won an unfair dismissal case against the company in what was described as a “publicly embarrassing Indigenous discrimination case”.

More than a decade later, thanks to the company’s Reconciliation Action Plan, he said he was passionate about engaging closely with NPA and Torres Strait communities.

“My job is to make sure, when we have discussions, we are appropriate,” he said.

“We have this cultural sensitivity and respectful protocol in respect to our culture.

“It is the first time this has been

He said he had been tasked to engage with communities about transitioning to renewable energy.

“This thing that’s coming up is renewable decarbonisation, where eventually we will not use diesel but renewable systems will provide us electricity,” he said.

“I play a role locally in land acquisition or leasing and

go-between those groups – our Traditional Owners, Prescribed Body Corporates, councils and local governments, and to engage with our engineers.”

He said he had also been asked to speak to communities about how they could manage their use of electricity better “Another big part of it is also going to the school to give educational talks about being smart with electricity to the young people,” he said.

From a small group of mostly First Nations people in support of a Voice for First Nations people, a community of over 60,000 volunteers grew nationally and from there more than 6.2 million allies put their hands up in favour, Stephen Mam writes ...

We shouldn’t forget that.

One of the key reasons I supported the Voice campaign was I didn’t want to say ‘No’ to our allies.

As a country, if we are sitting around a campfire and 40 percent of the circle are ready to stand beside First Nations people, we should not be walking out on them.

We should embrace them and nurture a relationship that is embedded with as much cultural integrity as we can afford moving forward.

The referendum brought to the fore those who were willing to show their support, those who were silent throughout the campaign (including some who have Reconciliation Action Plans), and those who supported the ‘No’ campaign – we shouldn’t forget them either, as we learn more about who they were.

What is evident is that no matter what political party is in power, the Australian government, as an institution, is inept at being able to properly care for First Nations peoples.

Why would we think otherwise?

Historically speaking, the entire colonial process – including the Frontier Wars – has only ever served to reinforce ‘governments’ who have endorsed acts of racism and genocide using instruments such as the Aborigines Protection Act, the White Australia Policy and the Northern Territory Emergency Intervention.

Why would we expect these same institutions and policy-makers would care for and empower

First Nations people and communities?

The referendum saw money and politics play a central role in deciding the fate of First Nations people.

So how do we create change when the status quo is as it is now?

Or at least as it appears to be?

There may be a need for First Nations people to review the credentials of those non-Indigenous organisations we work with.

If an organisation can’t demonstrate a working partnership with First Nations people, where First Nations people are included, listened to, and are part of decision-making processes, then there should be scope to reconsider where we prioritise our efforts.

Those who fell silent during the call for a First Nations voice included local governments and the education sector, as well as some big businesses who employ thousands of people.

If First Nations people were to disengage from institutions, such as universities for example, until a fully working partnership was established, they would have reason to be concerned.

First Nations people need to reposition themselves at negotiating tables as they continue their campaigns for self-determination, selfautonomy and economic independence.

The inadequacies First Nations people experience demand that large organisations, institutions and governments at all levels be held to account for their responsibilities and commitments.

When people see others wearing a Yes t-shirt, they don’t see a political campaign, they see a community of advocates and allies.

It’s time to connect with that and build on what we have done with those in the community who do support us.

Talei speaks to Pacific parliamentary forum Bus benefit for Kaurareg families

The Kaurareg Native Title Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (KNTAC) will use a community grant to purchase a small bus to help Elders and Kaurareg families better connect.

The organisation won the $30,000 Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant in the recent round of grant allocations.

KNTAC was one of more than 500 community groups from Coolangatta to the Torres Strait who received grants of up to $35,000 as part of a share of $13 million in this round from the Queensland government.

Other recipients included domestic violence services, sporting clubs, multicultural organisations, and other community-based groups.

The funds go towards a variety of projects including purchasing marine rescue and first aid equipment, the purchase of new vehicles, and building upgrades.

“Local clubs and not-for-profit organisations are at the heart of so many Queensland communities,” Attorney-General, Minister for Justice and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Yvette D’Ath said.

“Every one of the grant recipients, whether it be a sporting club, a multicultural organisation, or a domestic violence service, will be able to fund projects that benefit their local community.

“Congratulations to all of those Queensland clubs and organisations who have been successful this round – I look forward to seeing all of the amazing projects come to fruition.”

Saibai Koedal woman Talei Elu was invited a guest speaker to the 40th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Australia and Pacific Regional Conference in Brisbane last week.

The event was themed Representation for the Future: young people and parliaments.

Talei was one of two special guests invited to the parliamentary conference, where she told her community’s Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) project story to 60 delegates from Australia, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, Nuie, Fiji, Samoa, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Nauru and Kiribati.

She said the AEC project had increased electoral enrolment in the region while also employing women and raising awareness around structural issues that impeded residents from partaking in election activities.

Pic courtesy of Queensland Parliamentary Service. many community members that otherwise hadn’t had the opportunity to be enrolled, because there are structural issues like not being able to get a licence or any kind of ID,” she said. “[We’re] also talking about hosting a Youth Parliament next year with funds the Australian Electoral Commission has provided us to try and find ways to increase civics education and electoral participation.”

Ms Elu said she received good feedback

from the delegates on the work being done in her community.

She said other conference delegates presented ways in which their countries had increased youth participation in democratic processes.

“One [spoke] about how that Westminster system and their system of social governance worked together to try and create opportunities for youth to become involved in the parliamentary process or the democratic

process,” she said.

Talei said she was also given the opportunity to ask the delegation some questions.

“I had a few questions around the barriers to access of parliamentary processes,” she said.

“In Queensland Parliament, for instance, you’ve got committee hearings in Brisbane and the parliamentary website has options for E-petitions and starting petitions.

“For us, especially in the Torres Strait and

Cape York, if we’re not able to get online or if we don’t have speedy internet, we can’t really contribute to those things.”

Ms Elu said the purpose of holding a youth parliament in the NPA was to empower young people to be a voice for their region and participate in their own affairs.

“Trying to get some actively thinking about shaping policy and making decisions that might affect them,” she said.

“Often young people don’t have the opportunity to speak themselves about the issues that they experienced. “[It] can be left up to parents with teachers or other people that represent them.

“Having young people being able to share directly those concerns in a way that parliamentarians [understand] would be a really great opportunity for them to go about trying to solve these things.”

Much to be proud of – iconic craft work wins 2023 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Awards

Wagadagam man, and first-time entrant, Thomas Pedro was named the winner of the 2023 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award at celebrations held at the Cultural Centre last Thursday.

Mr Pedro’s winning entry Ngagalaig was chosen out of 52 entries by First Nations Queensland Museum Network Community Engagement Principal Avril Quaill.

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM congratulated Mr Pedro on his achievement and praised the entry for its significance to the region.

“The Torres Strait Headdress unites us, it is the symbol on our flag, and it represents us,” he said.

“To see the Headdress honoured in Mr Pedro’s piece is astonishing and reminds us, that as a people, we are one.

“Mr Pedro has been a contributing Gab Titui artist, and we are thrilled to see his work recognised as the 2023 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award winner.”

In her judge’s comments, Ms Quaill described Mr Pedro’s

Ngagalaig as ‘iconic’ and emphasised the complexity of the piece.

“Made in the form of a traditional Dhoeri headdress – the artist creates a form that is non-utilitarian - it is not meant to be worn,” she said.

“Ngagalaig evokes all – about choreography, of dancers in movement, flight, white capped waves and white fish sustenance, oceans, and seas.

“It is a standout work – iconic in its veneration of the eagle.”

Mr Pedro said he was grateful for the recognition and the opportunity to showcase his work.

“My piece was inspired by an experience back home, in Wug village, where I stood on the wharf and watched an eagle fly from its nest and dive into the water, retrieving a fish,” he said.

“As I watched, I could envisage that eagle as a headdress.

“I am so stoked about winning the 2023 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award.

“I want to big eso the Gab Titui Cultural Centre and the Torres Strait Regional Authority

for the opportunity to enter the awards.”

Runners up went to distinguished artist Harry Nona for his canvas Four Winds of Zenadth Kes, described by Ms Quaill as a “beautiful and profound work”.

“This monumental work on canvas conveys the reverence and respect of nature’s forces and detailed knowledge of cultural and secular life of Torres Strait Islander peoples,” she said.

“Each of the four winds are depicted and within each encyclopaedic knowledge is conveyed.”

Renowned Italgal and Kaurareg Elder Rosaline Tomsana took home the inaugural Best Contemporary Jewellery category prize with her work Sugu Dhmurr, which pays homage to traditional octopus hunting.

The 2023 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award entries are on display at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre until 16 December 2023.

Executive Principal - Michael Ward With only a few weeks to go until we break up for the Christmas-New Year holiday, our college is a very busy place indeed.

I was delighted to host last week, a visit from our new school supervisor Mr Leon Proud who is well known to the Torres Strait community. Mr Proud will be back on a regular basis and I am confident he will be a positive and influential advocate for the Torres Strait in the Department. He is working with a number of schools across Queensland as part of the new partnerships initiative, which promises a greater focus on delivering the Department’s vision of Equity and Excellence through a ‘whatever it takes’ approach for our most remote and disadvantaged schools.

We have engaged closely with our TSIREC board members and with Mr. Proud, to establish a positive basis for moving forward under the partnerships initiative and I am excited about what 2024 will bring.

One of many ways I have allocated significant resources to build the twenty-first century learning capacity of our college, has been to invest in a large number of new devices for students. Over the course of this year hundreds of new laptop computers have been distributed to our campus sites across the Torres Strait and a new order was recently placed for iPads to go into the hands of our youngest students as they begin their more formal learning journey.

This is one way we are delivering on our vision to align our operations to either meet or exceed what you would find in a modern school anywhere else. The opportunities to deliver engaging learning through technology are increasing with every passing year as new developments and innovations change the world. We are deliberately positioning the college to meet this reality with readiness and enthusiasm.

These final weeks will see a range of special events, including graduation ceremonies. Of particular note will be the graduation of our students completing year 12 at Waibeni Koey Ngurpay Mudh – a very special milestone. On behalf of the college leadership, I wish these great young people every success in the future and God’s blessings.Thank you sincerely to all staff, parents, family members and the communities who have nurtured our graduating students on their school education journey.

Bangarra Performance: Wed 15 Nov Tagai is excited to host a free community event, starring one of our own, Elma Kris who is currently working at Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh, on Wednesday 15 November.

This is a free community event, as Bangarra return their children’s show Waru – Journey of the Small Turtle Back to the Incredible Country and Community that has inspired it.

Literacy Our Term 4 Literacy focus is on reading and writing information texts. Students in the early years are learning about sharks and building their knowledge about the appearance, diet and habitat of these awesome creatures. While our year 4-6 students are researching an animal for their own report.

We have also been reading a class novel “Hatch” by a new Queensland author, Judith Stutchbury. It is a fantastic story about a young turtle hatchling. We are loving the themes

Every day a Teacher or Teacher Aide works with each group to help students to develop their spelling and reading skills. We also have one Teacher Aide who works with those students who need a boost to learn their letters and sounds. Every student is working hard to build their capacity to be a successful reader and writer.

Positive Culture for Learning The school’s behaviour focus for every week is determined by observing students in both the classroom and playground. Daily assembly time is used to remind students of the school expectations, with role-playing scenarios, discussing choices, and celebrating positive behaviour.

The current focus is the “High 5 Strategy,” a 5-step problem-solving approach that develops social skills and resilience. The strategy is designed to build self-esteem and

facts about different animals under the headings of classification, appearance, diet, habitat, young, and others. Students from Wakai Class presented some facts about ants at our last parade.

Literacy Our students are diligently engaged in their literacy rotations. At the start of this term, their reading was assessed, and our staff observed improvements across all year levels. Based on the test outcomes, our teachers have designed customized learning plans for both groups and individuals in every class.

The literacy system provides teachers with an opportunity to tailor their approach to every learner’s level of comprehension.

Celebrating NAIDOC Our school and community commemorated NAIDOC Day on Tuesday 8th of August.

The occasion featured a community parade and various activities, including yarning circles, arts and crafts, and music, all designed to honour and celebrate our Elders.

As part of this ceremony, each student composed and presented a brief written piece expressing why Elders hold significant value to them. This enhanced their public speaking skills in a practical setting.

The day culminated in a joyous community gathering, featuring shared kaikai and island dance performances by the students.

Garden Project Our classes have been actively involved in gardening activities. With the assistance of TSRA Rangers and staff, children have been transforming recycled materials into garden beds and signs.

We initiated the project by tilling the soil and sowing seeds. The children are eagerly anticipating the fruits of their labor - the harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables.

As we look ahead, we have a thrilling event in store to celebrate everyone’s hard work in the garden. Our Garden Party is scheduled for Friday November 17th.This promises to be an evening filled with joy, delicious food, and community togetherness.

NAIDOC Celebration On Friday 27th October, we held our annual NAIDOC celebration at Narupay Ngurpay Mudh. A mina big esso to all those who helped make this day possible!

The event was packed with engaging activities such as weaving, storytelling, and cultural games. After the funfilled rotations, a community Kup Muri lunch was served, followed by lively dancing from Kaziw Meta and our talented students.

The Newcastle Bay measures just shy of 100m in length and can travel at up to 16 knots.

The new arrival represents Sea Swift’s commitment to improving cargo capacity and connectivity across Northern Australia, and is set to meet schedules between Cairns, Horn Island and Weipa.

“In fact, it’s more than just a vessel – it represents Sea Swift’s identity and is a critical addition to our business”, Mr Freeman said.

The Newcastle Bay will play a vital role in ensuring food and essential deliveries reach the Outer Torres Strait Islands (OTSI).

TSLIB t-shirts a popular buy for community supporters

BY ALF WILSON Long sleeve shirts to honour the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion (TSLIB) are being highly sought after by residents of the Torres Strait and NPA, as well as other major cities around north Queensland.

The shirt was designed by the Working Committee formed in Townsville to facilitate commemorations for TSLIB’s 80th anniversary held earlier this year in Waiben, Townsville and Cairns, and included street parades and community gatherings.

A total of 880 men enlisted with the Battalion during World War II. Sadly, the last remaining survivors, Privates Mebai Warusam and Awati Mau, who were both from Saibai Island, passed away earlier this year after the 80thanniversary events.

Townsville Coordinator Therese Cowley said, the images and writing printed on the shirt consisted of a Bible verse, images of TSLIB during WWII and words in eastern and western islands language.

She said it took a while for the printing

to be given the all clear due to the use of the Australian Defence Force ‘Rising Star’.

“The eastern islands language was contributed by the late Benjamin Mabo and the western islands language is courtesy of Cygnet Repu, meaning, thank you for your services,” she said.

The Committee was given a permanent space at Jezzine Barracks in Townsville, where a big glass cabinet will be installed to store a mannequin wearing the original Army Uniform supplied to the TSLIB soldiers during WWII, with a few shelves to keep memorabilia of loved ones.

Families and relatives were encouraged to donate any family heirloom for safekeeping within the display.

The TSLIB shirt was printed by Townsville company Design Works Apparel and was displayed in their shop at Townsville’s Willows Shopping Centre.

Ms Cowley said that the shirt could only be ordered online and she had received great interest from Waiben and the Torres Strait Islands, and families living on the mainland.

Achieving your education goals made easier The national Closing the Gap target number five hopes students will achieve their full learning potential by increasing the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attaining Year 12 or equivalent to 96 per cent by the year 2031.

While the percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who finished high school has increased over the past few years, it is still the case that less than 70 per cent will

finish Year 12, or its equivalent, which remained significantly less than their non-Indigenous counterparts.

On that basis the Torres News is proud to present to you our annual education information guide for 2024.

Scholarships providing pathways for First Nations students After initially applying for a scholarship in the hopes of receiving a small bursary to purchase some textbooks, CQUniversity student Dionne Singleton said she could not be more grateful to receive the inaugural CQUniCares Holding Redlich Indigenous Law Scholarship.

“I was so excited to be chosen, I know that there are many worthy recipients and am very appreciative to be selected,” Dionne said.

“I have always prioritised my children’s education, so now I can look forward to doing something for myself.”

and First Nations Advisor Nareeta Davis advocates for First Nations education in regional Queensland and said the scholarship was intended to help support First Nations students to enter the law profession as graduates.

“Australia’s legal profession is in need of more First Nations voices,” Mrs Davis said.

“In the years to come, it’s vital that universities, government and law firms invest in a clearer and well-supported pathway for First Nations law students.”

Summer School sets Grace on path to future In 2022 I applied to the early offer program at James Cook University to study a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences, Grace Andrews writes…

When doing so, Aunty Karen from the Indigenous Education and Research Centre (IERC) contacted me to talk to me about my tertiary study options and have a yarn about a program called Summer School. Summer school was a pre-program for prospective Indigenous school leavers who were applying or thinking about applying to JCU for their tertiary studies.

Aunty Karen told me it would be a really good idea to apply for the program and come spend a week at JCU to see what university would be like.

A few weeks later, after applying, I got an email informing me I was one of the 24 Year 12 students invited to JCU for the program.

I was so excited to see Townsville and the university, but also a little sad cause I was missing the First & Forever, first nations musical festival - I really

wanted to see Barkaa.

opportunity to experience what university life was like as a whole.

I was born and lived all the way down south, in Deniliquin NSW – Koori country.

Choosing JCU Townsville was a really big and definitely life changing decision for myself, I would be moving 23 hours (drive) away from my family and home.

So it was quite the hike, and after a three hour drive and a three hour plane, I finally arrived in Townsville.

We were all being housed at Saints Residential college, which was one of the colleges on campus.

Summer school really solidified my decision and helped me grow confidence in my ability to move away from home and live and study on my own.

We started by meeting everyone, both from the IERC and the other students who had come from all over Queensland.

Meeting and becoming close with everybody who works in the IERC made me feel so comfortable and safe within the space.

During the week we focused on four main areas of study Math, English, Chemistry, and tertiary study skills.

The students and staff have become like family, and I wouldn’t be on this journey without their continued support and warm experiences I had at summer school.

All programs and classes were run by the IERC staff and academic lectures, with the help of a number of indigenous student ambassadors.

I have a distinct memory of when I first arrived in Townsville this year after driving my little MG3, with my whole life packed into it, all the way up here.

The ambassadors were amazing, because they were already students at JCU, and it was really good to yarn with them and learn more about their experiences at university.

I live on campus at the new Burralga Yumba accommodation building right next to the IERC. I have also been able to contribute to the establishment of Bebegu Yumba Wadja Bimbi, the Townsville Indigenous Student Association, helping to organise and promote social and cultural events for our Indigenous student cohort.

I receive so much love and support no matter what and know that without the summer school program I never would have met the IREC staff or any other students and made the valuable relationships I cherish and admire so much today.

Popular Tahlulah visits Palm Island schools

BY ALF WILSON NRLW star back Tahlulah Tillett proved a hit for students when she visited Palm Island last week as part of a program which rewards youngsters for good school attendance.

Tahlulah, 25, was one of the first players signed by North Queensland for their 2023 debut season in the NRLW. As a Cowboys Community Ambassador Tahlulah visited St

Michael’s Catholic and Bwgcolman State Community schools as part of the club’s Try for 5! program.

She was on hand to present prizes at St Michael’s School during school assembly and also took time to connect with students at Bwgcolman Community School., revealing their end of year prize up for grabs for the best performing class.

“It’s important for young kids to ensure they’re getting a good education, but also knowing

school’s a safe place, that they can go there to make friends and have fun, is just as important,” she said.

“Through Try for 5! we have the opportunity to visit the students once every term and also send them prizes.

“This program is excellent for motivating the children to attend school every day, with the added incentive of receiving rewards.

“The staff have been amazing at both schools; they’ve really driven

the program and the community have gotten behind it as well.”

St Michael’s teacher Jonathan Marquez said it meant kids were spending more time in the classroom learning skills for life.

“Taking this program on board this year as a school, we have noticed the excitement in the community and at school, as well as boosting students’ attendance,” he said.

“We needed a program that

would attract students’ attention and encourage them to attend school on a daily basis with the reward of getting a good education, plus the added bonus of winning a weekly or end of term prize.

“Staff alike have really hopped aboard and likewise have enjoyed having this program for our students - it has definitely made a difference this year and has improved behaviour on a whole new level.”

AFL cup to visit Garbutt Magpies

BY ALF WILSON The Garbutt Magpies Australian Rules Club in Townsville will host AFL premiers Collingwood later this month (22 November).

Collingwood defeated the Brisbane Lions in the recent AFL grand final 12.18 (90) to 13.8 (86) before more than 100,000 fans at the MCG to win their 16th flag in the blue ribbon competition.

Players and officials will bring their premiership trophy with them.

Garbutt Magpies has a close association with the Collingwood Magpies and in the past some of their players, including tall

ruckman Mason Cox, have been guests of the local club in Townsville.

Excited Garbutt Magpies official Randall Ross told the Torres News he expected a big turnout of former players, officials and other people for their visit to the Community Grow Centre.

Another official and former player Francis Tapim said it would be a huge event for the local community.

“There will be plenty of people from Garbutt there,” Mr Tapim said.

Garbutt Magpies was a fourth generation club which comprised mostly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders players and two

of the club’s founding members were the late Anastasia Maria Ross (nee Kanak) of Darnley Island descent and her husband Manny Ross of Aboriginal Juro and Kunjuun heritage.

The Garbutt Magpies last competed in an AFL Townsville senior competition in 1988 and won their last men’s premiership in 1982.

Randall Ross was offered a ticket to the AFL grand final by Mason Cox however could not travel because of illness and watched it on the box with other former players.

Former player Gordon Ross jnr, who lives in Melbourne, did attend the match and barracked for Collingwood.

Pacific Cup shock for ‘Roos

BY ALF WILSON Reuben Cotter was one of only a handful of Australian Kangaroos who played well in the Pacific Championships final against New Zealand, while teammate Hamiso TabuaiFidow had few opportunities in the side’s shock 30-0 loss.

Reuben lined up in the second row while Hamiso played in the centres in the Kangaroos’ run-on side.

Few people expected the Kiwis to win after the Aussie team beat them 36-18 seven days earlier in Melbourne.

It was even harder to imagine Australia might be kept scoreless.

Reuben was one of the lightest forwards on the field but was solid in attack and defence.

Several times he was involved in clashes with Kiwi enforcer Nelson Asofa-Solomona, who stood at 200cm tall and weighed in at 120kg, one of the heaviest forwards in rugby league.

Reuben never took a backward step, even though he was dwarfed in size by the giant Kiwi.

At the post-match press conference Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga said he couldn’t question the effort and attitude of his players.

BY KIERAN SCIBERRAS AFL CAPE YORK DEVELOPMENT TEAM Soon-to-be Year 12 graduates from AFL Cape York House, Yehusha and Edna joined the AFL Cape York game development team on the road last week, to deliver sports programs to nine different schools across the Gulf Savannah region.

Having moved to AFL Cape York House from the NPA, the girls recently competed their Year 12 studies in Cairns this year and jumped at the opportunity to work with students from communities across the region.

While on the road, Yehusha and Edna delivered in-school AFL lessons, after-school Auskick sessions, spoke about AFL talent pathways through the Crusaders representative program and talked about the boarding program at AFL Cape York House for Girls.

The communities they visited were Mt Surprise, Mt Garnett, Croydon, Georgetown, Normanton, Karumba, Burketown and Doomadgee.

Poruma and Badu Last week, the game development team ran the in-school AFL sports education and Auskick programs on Poruma and Badu islands.

A visit to Badu is always special, as the school is home to the northern-most Aussie rules football oval in the country.

Big day on Moa This week, the game development team were at Kubin and St Paul’s school campuses on Moa Island as part of our Outer Islands AFL programs.

After two full days of in-school and afterschool AFL sessions, St Paul’s campus hosted the Inaugural AFL interschool gala day, which saw upper-primary

students from the two campuses engaged in an action-packed day of AFL. Students engaged in team-building activities, talent pathways education, training and a footy game.

CEQ-IBIS jumped on board as a sponsor to provide healthy food and drink options for all our young footballers.

The team will head out to Mabuiag Island this week to work with students at the Tagai State College campus.

Deadly times for New York marathon runners M Continued from P28 Mer and Erub Island man Arthur Pitt and Moa Island woman Jade Ware were selected for the NY challenge along with eight other runners.

They worked with Torres Strait Islander and IMP graduateturned-coach Tristan Nelliman-Adams, who also made the trip.

Arthur said it was much more than just running for him, it was about being a good role model for his family and his community.

“Over the years, my mob and my people, especially my siblings, experience a lot of mental health issues,” he said.

“Things like drug alcohol, substance abuse,

and unhealthy lifestyles didn’t help either.

“Unfortunately, I lost siblings, so I want to be a good role model and representative for my other brothers and sisters that are still here – to show them that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

Arthur said it was his first time running the 42km – ever – and he was proud to have clocked the distance in 4h-12m-39s.

“I just want to encourage anybody out there to stick to a nice, healthy lifestyle, keep your body moving, eat good food, and surround yourself with the people that you love,” he said.

“You can do anything if you want to, whether to run a marathon or

even just get a good job and look after your family.”

Jade, who completed the marathon in 5h-35m02s, said she was in disbelief when told she was selected for the New York marathon.

“When I got told those words, I was in denial, I just kept on asking Tristan, ‘are you sure, bala, you sure it’s me, like is it proper?’,” she said.

“I think I asked that many times, I just couldn’t believe it because I tried out a year before and I didn’t get in.”

Jade said she had set out to inspire and lead other Torres Strait Islanders, but once she embarked on the journey she realised she had

work to do within herself first.

“I was putting these messages out that I want to be inspiring and show my mob how to be a leader,” she said.

“But I couldn’t be true to myself if I wasn’t putting the real work in.

“That then slowly turned around into my own self-healing and my own self-development I’ve been able to go through this year.

“I’ll be able to actually turn to myself and say, ‘I’m proud of the commitment I’ve given and the hard work I’ve put in,’ not just for me, but for my squad as well.”

Jade said she wanted to inspire other young people to do great things.

“I think that’s

important for our young people up there in community, to break that cycle of the lifestyle up there,” she said.

Arthur said joining the IMF helped him break his old belief that he wasn’t good enough to achieve such things. “(I thought) my body’s not going to hold up well, especially after having ACL reconstructions (and having) bad knees,” he said.

“Just by doing this, it’s affected my friends, family, my community and my girlfriend.

“By being really disciplined, they’ve noticed and I started to rub off on them, by them coming for a few runs, and a being a bit healthier.”

With the score locked in at 89-all at regular game time, Perth centre Keanu Pinder was fouled out with four minutes remaining.

He finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

NBA-bound Alexandre Sarr, who came off the bench, had to play more minutes and finished with 17 points and six rebounds.

The Wildcats played last Saturday night and defeated Adelaide 36ers, 99-88, and Pinder on 12 points and seven rebounds.

Before this round, Perth was 2-5 for the win-loss and desperately needed to play better and get more wins.
