Five days, 12 events, nationally acclaimed Indigenous media organisations, movie-makers, singers, dancers, chefs, artists, musicians and, most of all, a good contingent of local youth, Elders and several in between, came together to enjoy the Gathering Voices Media and Arts Festival on Waiben last week. Hosted by Torres Strait Islanders Media Association (TSIMA) and Torres News, CEO, Editor and organiser Diat Alferink said it was an honour to amplify voices from across Zenadth Kes nationally and internationally through the event. “National Indigenous media organisations like Batchelor Institute, the Koori Mail and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School community joined our staff in sharing their skills through a series of shared workshops, activities and events,” she said. “Community members learnt how to interview and be interviewed, take photos and hear about why media is important. “Along with a Youth Arts Day at ANZAC Park, we also had dance classes, choir, music mentoring, art networking events and a media forum.” She said their primary focus was to engage and inspire young people. “We were focussed on young people and encouraging them to tell their stories,” she said. “Our team and supporters did an incredible job bringing together a series of engaging, thoughtful and fun events for the community. “A highlight for all of us was chef Nornie Bero, who brought her high callibre culinary experience home from Naarm (Melbourne) for the first time, with a taste of Mabu Mabu. “And everyone loved our finale Inspiring Voices concert on Saturday night which featured internationally renowned artists from Sarong Samarai made up of Airileke, Sprigga Mek, Jagarizzar, Jugu, Roem Brothers, and performances by Deline Briscoe, Kee’ahn, Joey Tapau, Daniella Williams Jack Bani, Northen Xposure and Christine Anu.” For more pics and yarns see PAGES 12 – 15 inside!
