BY CARLI WILLIS A major leak in the Northern Peninsula Area’s (NPA’s) water treatment plant has been fixed and new filters have been installed, meaning a boil water notice – which has been in place for the past nine months – should soon be lifted, Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council (NPARC) says. The Council said they spent $427,000 on purchasing and installing new membranes into its water treatment plant, and a further $329,000 on repairing the leak at the plant yard. NPARC Executive Manager of Operations Augustus Yates said while the overdue repairs were welcomed by council and the community, there was more work to be done. “We did a similar project before I started with the council in June or July of 2021 and that was $375,000,” he said. “We can’t afford $400,000 every 12- 18 months. “We’ve been on a boiled water notice for nine months, we should have had them replaced nine months ago.” He said their water issues came under more pressure during tourist season. The NPA has a population of around 2781 residents but could see as many as 60-80,000 tourists travel through each year. “We have a high population of tourism during the dry season every year, which also has an impact on what our usage is,” Mr Yates said. “Repairing that major leak is actually allowing us to provide water for the community rather than having it run down the road.” Continued PAGE 5 N
