Sharing language and ailan kastom in Darwin Zenadth Kes leaders, traditional dancers and rangers travelled more than 1300 kilometres to sunny Larrakia Country to share language and ailan kastom at the PULiiMA Indigenous Languages and Technology Conference in Darwin this week.

The biennial First Nations-led event, has been running since 2007 and attracts language speakers from across the continent and internationally.

This year’s Conference included the official launch of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL) 2022-2032 and the release of Australia’s action plan, Voices of Country, which was developed in consultation with the IDIL Directions Advisory Group.

Advisory Group member and Badu woman Leitha Assan was MC for the event, alongside Aboriginal comedian Sean Choolburra.

As a Torres Strait language and arts advocate, Ms Assan was also a member of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation Board and the Coalition of Peaks Languages Policy Partnerships Committee.

She said the action plan was crucial for restorative justice and survival of First Nations’ traditional languages.

“The IDIL was a key outcome of the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, steered by the Global Task Force established by UNESCO,” she said.

“In Australia’s action plan, Torres Strait Islander voices are prominent to ensure equal representation of both First Nations cultures and our many languages and dialects.

“The plan features an incredible Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Case Study following the success of the Malu Kiai Boigu Rangers and their efforts in Caring for Country using traditional methods passed down through generations.

“Arts and culture also play a significant role in maintaining our languages.

“Expression of culture and language – through music, literature, visual arts, theatre, multi-media and dance – is at the core of our lifestyle.

“It’s embedded in our culture and defines who we are today.”

Several Torres Strait linguists and community language educators were also at PULiiMA to facilitate discussion, and Mer’s Neguam Dance Troupe was selected as part of a TSRA-supported delegation to share ailan kastom.

The program included a presentation cohosted by Torres Strait language champions Lala Gutchen and Kapua Gutchen, who lead conversations on the presentation new technologies which fostered communitydriven, governed and managed First Nations’ language revitalisation, maintenance and teaching.

Ms Gutchen won this year’s NAIDOC Caring for Country and Culture Award for her efforts in language preservation and climate change in the Torres Strait.

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said the importance of Torres Strait representation at PULiiMA was vital to the region’s language preservation plans.

Histories ‘highly commended’ Leah Lui-Chivizhe’s book Masked Histories has received a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the NSW Premier’s History Awards, just missing out on being a finalist against more than 70 entries in her category.

NSW Premier Chris Minns announced the shortlists for the 2023 awards earlier this month.

Eleven judges considered 186 entries across the six prize categories.

Ms Lui-Chivizhe said she was excited.

“It recognises the significance of my research for working differently with museum collections and for writing new histories of the Torres Strait,” she said.

“And I’m looking into translating sections of the book into educational materials for high schools and maybe a short film.

“In the short term, hopefully it will also mean more book sales.”

Judges said Masked Histories celebrated “the remarkable Torres Strait Islander turtle

shell masks that were taken or traded by Europeans throughout the nineteenth century”.

“In elegant and spare prose, Lui-Chivizhe reveals the significant work of these masks in Torres Strait history, both ancient and recent,” the judges said.

“Her book stands as an inspiration to historians seeking ways to centre Indigenous agency via studies of the more-than-human.”

NPA gears up for rodeo fun

Rodeo events and horse races, best dressed, kids sack races, dashes for cash, thong and boot throwing, and a bike parade are just some of the events big crowds are expected to enjoy at this weekend’s annual NPA Rodeo and Races.

The three-day extravaganza will be held at the Yusia Ginau Oval in Bamaga.

Free buses will run from NPA communities for most days until 9.30pm.

Competitors can register at the Nominations Tent.

They must have completed paperwork, and have boots and shoes for the rodeo and horse racing events.

A long list of sponsors included Bamaga Enterprises, Top End Plumbing, NQ Builders, Seisia Enterprises, Umagico Supermarket, NPARC, Lamont Transport and Rio Tinto.

The Opening Ceremony will be held tonight at 6pm along with the first event – the 5-12-year-old poddy rides – sponsored by Coastal Rotors.

Far North patients receiving timely care

For the second quarter of 2023 all Category One patients who visited Emergency Departments, across the Cairns & Torres Hospital and Health Services (TCHHS), were treated within the clinically recommended time of two minutes.

Across all TCHHS facilities the median waiting time was 13 minutes, and 90 per cent of all presentations were seen within the clinically recommended waiting times for their category.

TCHHS Interim Chief Executive Dean Davidson said a total of 6,659 people were seen in emergency departments across the Torres Strait, Cape York and Northern Peninsula Area in the quarter. ““The percentage of patients requiring hospitalisation, who were admitted to hospital within 4 hours across all 5 categories in the June quarter, was 84 per cent, which was above the benchmark standard of 80 per cent,” he said.

“For patients who did not require hospitalisation, 94 per cent across all categories were in and out of emergency within four hours during the June quarter – well above the target of 80 per cent.”

He said also in the June quarter, a total of 67 patients received their elective surgery.

“At 30 June, no elective surgery patients had been waiting longer than clinically recommended for their procedures,” he said.

Outer islands take Yes campaign info on board

BY CARLI WILLIS ‘Yes’ campaigners have travelled thousands of kilometres to reach 11 outer islands and spread the word about the Voice.

Yes23 organiser for Far North Queensland Stacee Ketchell, a Wakaid and Meriam woman, lead the project with support and guidance from Reconciliation Australia and Torres Strait Islands Regional Council (TSIRC).

Reconciliation Queensland CEO Erin Lang – a Minjungbal woman of the Bunjalung Nation – said the idea was sparked by a conversation with local leader and TSIRC representative Ella Kris.

“Aunty Ella Kris wanted to host national reconciliation week events across the region,” Ms Lang said.

“There wasn’t much funding that was accessible to her at the time so we ended up

“We were talking to this year’s national Reconciliation Week theme, which is be a voice for generation.

“It just made sense for us to reach out to Stacee and have Stacee be a part of coming out and talking about what the Voice is, what that means and what impact it will have on community.”

Ketchell were joined by Ms Kris and supporter Elizabeth Hosea on the trip.

Ms Ketchell said even though time was limited on each island due to logistics, discussions were positive and constructive.

“A lot of families and communities appreciated a visit, sharing more information and understanding,” she said.

“It was mostly questions around the structure, around

the detail and the representation from the region and what that looks like.

“We all know that that work is yet to be confirmed because the Voice structure and details aren’t set yet.”

Ms Ketchell said she had done her own research and in her lifetime seven different representative bodies had been abolished by governments.

She said if the Voice was successful, it would

be enshrined in the constitution and could only be abolished by another referendum.

Ms Ketchell said she felt the Voice to parliament could be an important conduit for helping communities, such as the those on the outer islands, have a say in places where laws and policies were made about them.

“We know best what happens on ground and in our communities, we know what needs to

happen,” she said.

“We want to influence at the highest level the decisions that are made about us.

“We don’t want to keep repeating history, we need something that’s sustainable, that is able to address our issues consistently, without being fearful of the government of the day.”

Ms Ketchell said communities had connected with the information so well that on each island people

had come forward to volunteer to help continue discussions.

“We were able to identify key volunteers and community champions that will able to continue these yarns on the outer islands,” she said.

Earlier this year the TSRA launched the Torres Strait Traditional Languages Association aimed at progressing the region’s language aspirations.

“Torres Strait languages have been reported by UNESCO as being severely endangered, survived

primarily through song and dance practices,” Mr Stephen said.

“With support of the TSRA, the Association will continue to facilitate the revitalisation and maintenance of traditional languages across the region.

“Participation at events like PULiiMA will inspire and guide the Torres Strait Traditional Language Association, and drive outcomes for our communities.

“TSRA also continues to support traditional dance teams to perform on national and international platforms that elevate and showcase Torres Strait culture and language.”

Community gets behind kindy-prep transformation

Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh Head of Campus Rick Cass, his wife Trish Lehmann and a host of helpers began transforming Paru Kindy-Prep playground into a colourful, interactive play space on Saturday.

Inspired by their success at Susri Kindy, staff and families chipped in to build a new stage, colourful garden beds and the beginnings of a gross-motor track.

Lead teacher Michelle Martin said the working bee “filled her cup” to see so many adults and kids volunteering their time.

“Such a heartwarming day, so many happy faces, splashes of colour, gardening and a barbecue – wow, what a day,” she said.

A ‘worthy’ celebration as NPA school turns 50 STORY BY JEN ENOSA & CARLI WILLIS PIC SUPPLIED Northern Peninsula Area State College (NPASC) is about to turn 50, something community teacher Jeffrey Aniba says is worthy of a big celebration.

The NPASC Senior Campus, formerly known as ‘Bamaga High School’, was planning to honour their 50-year history next month with a three-day celebration from Tuesday 19 September to Thursday 21 September.

“There’s stories that need to be told about the legacy of the school,” he said.

Mr Aniba has been a passionate support to students and the school through his work for more than 20 years, in several roles, from Education Council chair to his current position.

He said celebrations would include food stalls, entertainment and possibly some films.

“We’ll have like novelty games, maybe the old sports we used to play before – it’s going to be fun,” he said.

“Previous teachers that have been in the college have been getting in contact with us to get involved.”

He said the community was also holding a working bee on Saturday 2 September, and invited anyone in the NPA and Torres Strait with spare time to join in a clean up.

“Whatever we need to do will be washed, the walls, do a bit of gardening and all that” he said.

He said he was always looking to the future and to encourage his community to take the reins on their education, as generations once did in the past.

“I did a bit of a NAIDOC talk at the school here, a couple of weeks ago,” he said.

“If we project another 50 years from now, to 2083, what will the school be like?

“What will the school look like?

“What will the community look like?

“What are we doing about our communities, our school, the people, the students, the generation we’re not

seeing yet… all of that will carry on.”

Mr Aniba said he did not finish school himself, but when he was younger the community was much more involved in developing the school and its relationships.

“It’s a systemic approach most of the time now, which I mean by saying that is a westernised education, or curriculum,” he said.

“I haven’t seen enough balance, in my experience, in my time.

“If you are balanced in school, you will have a community school that is being proactive, functioning and looking at Indigenous perspectives in schools.”

He said the status quo wasn’t a desirable fit for the region, where most of the students were Indigenous and English was their second or third language.

“My experience over time now, is that it’s the generation of parents have changed,” he said.

“Today, you don’t have enough parents in schools, there’s a little bit of a disengagement, or just not educated enough to participate in the child’s education.”

He recalled during the 70s and 80s teachers were culturally adopted by families “The main thing that happened before was the teachers were out in the communities, the relationship was built in the classroom first with the student and the teacher,” he said.

“The teacher is able to walk out to the community and be part of the island adoption or just a friend or whatever.

“But that hasn’t happened for the last maybe thirty years or so.”

Mr Aniba said he would keep working with the community and school toward a better future.

He encouraged everyone who celebrated the anniversary to come with an open mind to yarn and learn from each other.

Referendum

This year a referendum will be held on whether to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

The last referendum was held in 1999. It’s the only way the Constitution can be changed. The Constitution sets out how Australia is governed.

All Australian citizens aged 18 and over must vote, and the government must act on what Australia decides.

Why ‘Malungu Yangu Wakay – the Voice from the Deep’ matters ...

BY JEN ENOSA AND CARLI WILLIS Celebrations were held across Zenadth Kes this week for the 86th anniversary of the first Island Council meeting that paved the way for the formation of the Masig Statement.

But why is this day so important?

Elders and leaders called for yumi to listen and remember what those who came before stood for, and went through, to get us here today.

As the result of the maritime strike in 1937, Elders and community members met on Masig Island for what would be known as the first Torres Strait Island Councillor’s Conference.

At the time, thirty years before the 1967 referendum, Indigenous Peoples were not counted towards Australia’s population in the census, and they were not allowed to vote.

Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC) Deputy Mayor Getano Lui Jnr said he had advocated for a better quality of life for his community and region throughout his political life.

He said it was all

made possible by that first Island Council, and those from the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Areas who stood up to governments, against all odds, and for their communities.

“Everything I say is in memory of thempla and the vision that they had for our future,” he said. “We still got the minutes for 1937 and onwards, and when you look at the strength of them Elders blo yumi me at the time, when all be standup to carry that mantle forward.

“To lay the foundation, blo yumi where you be stand up today, and how you need building on it today for future generations to come.”

That first Torres Strait Island Councillor’s Conference was recognised as the start of the push for regional autonomy.

Councils of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area gathered once again on August 23 last year and renewed their call for regional sovereignty in The Masig Statement Malungu Yangu Wakay (the Voice from the Deep).

He said Torres Strait Islanders were negotiating autonomy – and making headway – with governments in 1958.

In 1984, the Island Co-ordinating Council (ICC) was established and, he recalled, there was a jubilee in 1987 which celebrated 50 years since the formation of the first Torres Strait Island Councillor’s Conference.

“The year after, 1988, Torres Strait be call for sovereignty through the ICC at the time,” he said.

“Why did we call for sovereignty?

“We became the Forgotten Race because we be out of sight out of mind, it’s a small patch and nobody would take notice.

“From that cry blo sovereignty things did start to happen here in the Torres Strait.”

Mr Lui said it wasn’t an easy road, but there were many achievements that were born from their efforts, including the formation of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and the establishment of the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA).

“I might add that when ATSIC was created, for the first time [we were] given the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders,” he said.

He said before that time there was a refusal from governments to acknowledge the calls of Torres Strait Islanders to be recognised as their own People, as distinct from Aboriginal People.

“We had a Torres Strait Islander changing and challenging the constitution of this country on the basis of the doctrines of Terra Nullius, removing the notions of a belief that this country belongs to no man,” he said.

“The government introduced a Commonwealth Parliament Act, the Native Title Act, but they didn’t put in the Constitution that this land belongs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

He said the message carried over the past 86 years had remained the same and was as strong as ever: that Torres Strait Islanders needed to practice self determination, and have autonomy and control over the region.

“In terms of a national movement for First Nations people through the Voice and the referendum coming up, in 1967 we asked Australia at the referendum that as First Nations people we be counted,” he said.

“So in 1967, the Australian people went to the polling booths at the referendum and supported that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders should be counted.

“Here in 2023, we are asking Australians now to recognise, to give us a Voice to Parliament.”

Tagai State College reaches a crucial juncture this week as it concludes an extensive School Review, a stride towards achieving equity and excellence. This unprecedented approach by the department, was conducted by a team of 25 proficient internal and external reviewers. On Sunday 13th, they embarked on their task by absorbing presentations about the college’s Explicit Improvement agenda. During the week they journeyed to each primary island campus, to evaluate their alignment with the college’s overarching direction. This methodical review was punctuated by interactions with leaders, staff, parents, students, and community partners.

The review’s outcomes echo with positivity as the feedback received from the team has been encouraging. Affirmations, refinements and constructive recommendations have emerged, underscoring the progress achieved. The recognition of the college’s commitment to its purpose is a reflection of the ongoing dedication of the entire school community.

As we eagerly await the final written report, we look forward to unpacking its insights with staff and the community.

Throughout their journey, the team engaged with a diverse spectrum of stakeholders—leaders, staff, parents, students, and community partners. This inclusive dialogue not only enriched the review process but also attested to the college’s holistic approach to education. Commendation is extended to all contributors for their active participation in this college review.

Thanks to the unwavering efforts of the Parents and Citizens (P&C) association, the playground became a reality through a $35,000 gaming grant. The endeavour also saw collaboration between the P&C and the college, with both entities sharing the freight costs equally. The installation expenses of $65,000 were supplemented by a $15,000 contribution from the college funds, culminating in the successful completion of the project by Matt Birney Builders.

In other news, a standing ovation is in order for the year 3/4 class, celebrating a remarkable 99% attendance during Week 5. Their dedication and commitment to their education is remarkable!

The purpose of his visit was to conduct the official blessing and inauguration of the newly constructed Queensland Government Accommodation facility on Division 10 Warraber Island.

A heartfelt acknowledgment and gratitude is extended to Aunty Clara Tamu, who, during her tenure as the Chair of the Parent and Citizens (P&C) Committee, championed the cause of establishing this essential accommodation facility several years ago. Thanks to her persistent advocacy, the fruition of this project has become a reality.The Head of Campus will be living in this residence so the College can extend its scope in recruiting suitable and dedicated teachers. The removal of accommodation constraints provides a favourable environment for educators to our campuses, allowing them to focus solely on teaching our young people.

Literacy Every morning on Poruma our students take part in our PLD literacy program. They begin in a whole group setting and are then split into smaller groups based on current spelling and reading ability levels.

Our teachers and Teacher Aides deliver content targeted to each specific group.

At Poruma we have eight small groups working across two classes with targeted interventions for individual students occurring daily.

Visit from Mr Daniel Churches Poruma campus has many visitors throughout each school year. We were blessed to have had pre service teacher Mr Daniel Churches visit in the first three weeks of this term.

The students loved having a different teacher for this period and Mr Churches had a teaching and lifestyle experience that he will long remember.

Visit from Mayor Phillemon Mosby At the beginning our this this, St Pauls Torres Strait Regional Council, hosted representatives from across the Straits. On the last day, the school invited our Mayor Phillemon Mosby to a Question and Answer session with our upper school student group.

The focuses are chosen from collaborative staff discussions about observed behaviours in all settings and implemented over a fortnight. These questions will be adapted to suit the next focus, whereby we may change the content but adhere to the same structure, therefore maximising uptake through familiarity.

Specialist referrals on average STORY AND PIC

BY ALF WILSON A total of 389 patients from the Torres Strait, 64 from the NPA and 801 from Cape York are referred to Cairns Base Hospital on average per year, for a range of specialist treatments according to official statistics released to the Torres News.

Services (TCHHS) spokesman said the main conditions for which patients were referred included: • orthopaedics, • respiratory/sleep, • gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures, • gastroenterology, • urology, • neurology, and • geriatrics.

“Those figures are the average annual referrals to Cairns Hospital with the main conditions provided,”

the spokesman said.

He said Torres Strait, Cape York and NPA residents were referred to Cairns Hospital or elsewhere, such as Townsville, for complex or specialist treatment not available locally.

“When patients are referred outside the region for specialist treatment, they receive support with transport and accommodation costs through the Queensland Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme,” he said.

Mrs Peters, who was walking with the aid of crutches, had the support of her husband Tony in Cairns, where she also had many family and friends.

New pregnancy health study to roll out across most of Queensland

BY CARLI WILLIS The health and wellbeing of 400 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families through their pregnancies will be studied by Mater Research and the University of Queensland thanks to a $4.7 million grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council.

A pilot study with 65 families at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane was already underway, to be completed by the end of this year.

Mater Research said an Indigenous governance team would then look at study outcomes and how best to roll out the rest of their research across the state.

Principle Research Fellow Associate Professor Kim Rae, who helped lead the project, said the purpose of the study was to observe factors that helped babies become strong healthy adults.

“It’s not just about what mum and dad are doing,” she said.

“It’s also about the environment that mum and dad live in, the climate mum and dad are exposed to – if Mum and Dad are exposed to toxins in their environment.”

She said results from the pilot study would help their Indigenous governance team design the Strong Families Study with the grant.

Mater Research said there would be a focus on Far North

Queensland and they had formed partnerships with existing Indigenous health organisations including Wuchopperen Health Service in Cairns, Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Services (TAIHS) and the Palm Island Community Company (PICC).

Ms Rae said the research team had already met nearly 200 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members.

“We’ve asked them about what they think is really important for families and what should go into a study like this,” she said.

“The big things that they really talked to us about is that they really want us to make sure that there’s a strong focus on social and emotional wellbeing, and interventions that support parents with social and emotional wellbeing.

“They really wanted to focus on children’s health and to be able to support families with interventions for kids that may be at risk of neurodevelopmental outcomes for cerebral palsy or foetal alcohol syndrome, or autism.

“They also want us to talk about some of the amazing deadly programs that are happening in community, because strong culture brings strong health.”

Ms Rae said unfortunately the grant wasn’t enough to extend research into the Torres Strait region, but they intended to seek more funding to do this.

Parents reminded to vaccinate kids for pneumococcal disease

Flu season well underway with more than 50 hospitalised More than 700 confirmed cases of influenza have hospitalised more than 50 people across the Torres & Cape Health Services (TCHHS) region Public Health Medical Officer Dr Allison Hempenstall says.

“Being vaccinated every year is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu,” she said. “With the seasonal flu vaccine now readily available, everyone should take the opportunity to be vaccinated.

“It’s a safe vaccine for children and is offered annually to everyone older than six months of age.

“But as well as vaccination, good hygiene also is very important in preventing flu, just as it was during the COVID–19 pandemic.

“The best way to prevent the spread of flu is to wash your hands, cover your coughs, put tissues straight in the bin and stay away from other people if you or they are sick.

“Practising social distancing by staying at least 1.5 metres away – as recommended during the recent COVID-19 pandemic – will mean coughs and sneezes don’t reach another person’s face.

“Wearing a mask also is highly recommended to avoid transmitting the flu to others, or to protect yourself from people around you who might have the flu.

“If you get the flu, you should stay home and rest and drink plenty of fluids until symptoms have resolved, which is usually five to seven days.

“All these measures can help prevent the spread of flu.”

Dr Hempenstall said the flu could be a serious illness, especially for high-risk people like young children, old people, pregnant women, and people with some illnesses – like breathing problems or diabetes.

“While healthy adults usually recover quite well, influenza infection can lead to other medical complications such as pneumonia,’’ she said.

She said two types of pneumococcal vaccine were provided free under the National Immunisation Program for different age groups and circumstances: • Children at two, four and 12 months of age (three doses in total) • an extra dose at six months for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who live in Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia, or South Australia, in addition to the

three doses for all children (four doses in total) • children under 12 months who have certain medical conditions that put them at higher risk of getting serious pneumococcal disease (six doses in total over a number of years) • all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years or over (three doses in total) • all non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 70 years or over (one dose) • all people 12 months and over who have who have certain medical conditions that put them at higher risk of getting serious pneumococcal disease (three doses in total).

Dr Hempenstall said pneumococcal disease was caused by the bacterium

Streptococcus pneumoniae (also known as the pneumococcus).

“These bacteria are commonly carried in the nose and throat without causing any health problems,’’ she said.

“They are easily spread by coughing or sneezing.

Sometimes, when people get this bacterium, they go on to develop disease.

“There are several strains of the bacteria, some of which are more likely than others to cause disease.

“The serious diseases they can cause include meningitis, (infection of the covering of the brain), septicaemia (blood infection) and pneumonia.

“These diseases most commonly affect children aged under two years and people aged over 65 years, but vaccination can help protect you against the disease.”

Cape York, Torres Strait, and Northern Peninsula Area parents and vulnerable people are being urged to take up the pneumococcal vaccine, with six cases of pneumococcal disease already reported in the region so far this year.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Public Health Medical Officer Dr Allison Hempenstall said the region recorded eight cases in 2022 and five in 2021.

She said anyone who wanted to protect themselves or their children against pneumococcal disease should talk to their vaccination provider or local primary health care centre about getting vaccinated.

BY ALF WILSON Tough centre Dane Gagai gained bragging rights over Alex Johnston when his Newcastle Knights beat the South Sydney Rabbitohs 29-10 at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Sunday.

Knights centre Dane had a good game in attack and defence whilst Alex, who has been a try scoring machine for the Rabbitohs, had few opportunities.

Alex didn’t add to his impressive tally of 21 tries for the 2023 season and was well-held by the Knights.

Dane had been a team mate of Alex at the Rabbitohs before joining the Knights.

The Knights led 12-nil at halftime, making it seven wins in a row and moving them up to seventh spot on the ladder.

Knights fullback Kalyn Ponga was dynamic and Greg Marzhew scored three of the Knights six tries.

Next week in round 26, which is the second last before the finals series, the Knights meet the Cronulla Sharks on Sunday and the eighth placed Rabbits have a bye.

The Hammer is expected to line up for the Dolphins next weekend when they take on the Cowboys in a Queensland derby on Friday at Suncorp Stadium.

Cotter tireless in Cowboys loss Determined forward Reuben Cotter was tireless in defence when the Cowboys lost 32-12 to the Cronulla Sharks at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium on Thursday night.

Reuben made 24 tackles early in the first half which helped the Cowboys roll to a 12-6 lead.

Forward Reuben and Cowboys hooker Reece Robson got through a mountain of work in defence with 84 tackles between them.

However the Sharks dominated to roll to a 18-12 lead at the break with Cronulla halves pairing Nicho

centre Jasmine was given a great cut-out pass by five eighth Tahlulah Tillett, and charged 45 metres down field to evade several defenders to score.

That was at the 27th minute just before halftime when the Sharks led 24-6.

Jasmine ran for more than 100m to be amongst the best on the ground and was one of the form centres of the 10 club comp.

Northern Pride have charged into seventh spot on the 15 club Queensland Hostplus Cup competition ladder, with a hard fought 28-26 win over the Dolphins at Barlow Park in Cairns on Saturday night.

The game was a thriller in round 22 and the Pride side included back Dantoray Lui, who has been a Erub United player, and Saemus and Denzel King-Smith from Cape York.

Try scorers for the Pride were Daniel Woodhouse (two), Will Partridge, Justin Frain and Matthew Egan whilst Will Partridge kicked four goals.

The Pride bolted to a 22-10 lead at half time and held on despite a second half blitz by the Dolphins.

Amongst the best for the Dolphins was Brenton Baira, who scored a try at the 78th minute and kicked four goals.

Brenton was the son of former Canberra Raiders player Royston Lightning, who still lines up at North Queensland Allblacks carnivals and holds his own against much younger opponents.

Now aged 45, Royston played 15 A grade matches for the Raiders between 1996 and 98 during which time he scored five tries.

Blackhawks down to Bears The Blackhawks were not disgraced when they lost 20-12 to minor premiers the Burleigh Bears at Townsville’s Jack Manski Oval on Saturday.

The Blackhawks side included Jayden Hodges,

the Sharks scored seven tries to two with Emma Manzelmann scoring the other Cowboys four pointer at the 56th minute.

Cowboys have won two from four matches in their debut NRLW season but are yet to taste victory at home.

It was the second win from five games by the Cowboys who were still searching for their first home victory.

Cowboys coach Ben Jeffries was disappointed, which showed at the press conference after the loss.

AFL’s Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre Cup hits the NPA Residents and staff from AFL Cape York House for Girls, AFL Cape York Cape York House for Boys and Mount St Bernard College were in the Northern Peninsula Area last week, in preparation for the Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre (CJAN) Cup. The four day AFL Game Development event included everything from a community colour run and barbecue through to a visit to Pajinka and interschool AFL carnival.

AFL Cape York Development Coordinator Kieran Sciberras said they arrived last Wednesday, after an overnight stay at Bramwell, and the 80 person travelling party split into groups, wasting no time before heading out to each of the NPA State College Campuses to run sessions with students.

“The visits from AFL Cape York House residents are so engaging for the students at the schools,” he said.

“They have regular visits from our Game Development team this term, so having AFL house coming in and reiterating the importance of going to school, doing the right thing and staying healthy and active is really motivating for them.

“It’s even better as some of the residents are former NPA State College students themselves, so they’re role models for the younger ones.”

AFL Cape York Development Coordinator Matt Mellahn said after the in-school visits the travelling contingent was back on the road, headed for Pajinka.

“A lunch time visit to the most Northern point of mainland Australia has become a must-do as part of the lead-up to the CJAN Cup,” he said.

“To be able to share in the experience of travelling up here with the young people from the House is something that we always look forward to as it’s a mid-term freshen up for both staff and students and can reconnect them with family, country and culture.”

More than 170 students from across the NPA descended onto Yusia-Ginau Oval for the free ‘no-school, no-play’ AFL Colour run, barbecue and AFL Kickaround on Wednesday afternoon.

“The colour run is one of my favourite events of the year, seeing that many young people from prep students through to grade 12, is so heart-warming to see,” AFL Cape York Programs and Participation Coordinator Jake O’Halloran said.

“For us to be able to use

an event like this, not only to engage the community, but to also reiterate the importance of going to school and showing positive behaviours is great for our program.”

On Thursday students from AFL Cape York House for Boys, AFL Cape York House for Girls, Mount St Bernard College, NPA State College and Tagai State College took to the field for the annual Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre Cup, which has been running for over 15 years and is AFL Cape York’s longest running Participation and Talent Program.

Jake said games were played in a competitive spirit with good sportsmanship on display, throughout the Gala day event.

“The event is used as a selection process for National Indigenous programs, Gold Coast Suns Academy programs and for our Crusaders representative program,” he said.

“There is so much talent across the NPA and Torres Strait, so being able to have representatives from across the regions, coming together to play football is something that you absolutely love to see.

“To have Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre travel with players up from Cairns, work in each of the schools and present the awards to our winning teams is also really special.”

The AFL Cape York House for Boys team won the Chris Johnson Cup and the AFL Cape York House for Girls team retained the Angie Nadredre Cup after a solid performance again this year, Kieran said.

“At the end of the day, the CJAN Cup and the whole week are about a lot more than just football,” he said.

“It’s about reinforcing the importance of attending school, encouraging positive behaviours and giving young people an opportunity to develop life skills.

“We just use AFL as a tool to help develop our future leaders of tomorrow.

“We wouldn’t be able to run these programs without the amazing support from our partners and sponsors at Rio Tinto, Peddells Ferry, Loyalty Beach Campgrounds, NPARC and the Queensland Government.”

He said AFL would continue across the region with visits to NPA State College campuses and Tagai State College campuses ongoing to the last day of the school term.

Footy grand finals ready to play out for NPA teams

BY ALF WILSON Arch rivals Alau Eagles and New Mapoon Warriors will meet in a blockbuster Northern Peninsula Area Regional Rugby League competition grand final at Bamaga’s Yusia Ginau Oval on Saturday week (2 September).

Spectators from far and wide were expected to watch the showdown between these talented teams at the climax of what has been a successful season.

New Mapoon Warriors earned their spot in the decider with a 36-30 victory over a gallant Injinoo Crocs in the preliminary final at the venue last Friday night.

Try scorers in the hard

fought encounter were Adagi Lifu (two), and Justice Walsh, Zengery Nona, Mauga Nona, and Alexander Ishmael (one each).

Zengery Nona kicked six goals for a match personal tally of 16 points.

Injinoo Crocs try scorers were Windsor Bowie, Simeon Woosup, Mickey Pablo, Henry Woosup and Brendan Magala.

With his five goals Brendan Magala had a tally of 14 points.

The two semi finals matches, two weeks ago at Bamaga, produced some entertaining football with many highly skilful players on show.

Alau Eagles earned an armchair path to the decider, with a 22-16 win over Injinoo

Crocs in the qualifying semi final.

Try scorers for Alau Eagles were George Mudu, David Mooka, Eli Anau and Sherwin Young whilst Charles Baira booted three goals.

Injinoo Crocs try scorers were Daniel Nona, Robin Pablo and Henry Woosup with Manu Wigness and Jeffrey Neliman each kicking a goal.

In the elimination semi final, New Mapoon Warriors 36 defeated Bamaga Roos 12.

For the Warriors flying winger Ky Gowa scored three tries, with singles to Manai Madua, Xavier Neliman, Zengery Nona and Alexander Ishmael.

Zengery Nona had a great game chipping in with four goals.

For Bamaga Roos Wesley Agie and Timothy Tamwoy scored tries and Alex Pablo booted two goals.

Opinion amongst keen judges about the outcome of the grand final was divided, with both Alau Eagles and New Mapoon Warriors both given a great chance of holding up the much sought after trophy.

The Alau Eagles will have a three week break, an advantage for any players who need recovery from any niggling injuries – or will the match hardened Warriors triumph, given their two weeks of football in a row?

NPARRL, NPARC, QRL and volunteers deserve great praise for their efforts in organising remote community rugby league.

Boomers win critical warm-up games

The Australian Boomers have claimed two key scalps leading into the upcoming FIBA World Cup. First up they defeated fifth-

ranked France in a lead-up game played in Tokyo last Sunday night.

NBL legend Andrew Gaze said the Boomers were in “all sorts” after falling behind early, but bounced
