Consulate-General joins Obon celebrations

BY CARLI WILLIS Dignitaries, including the Consulate-General of Japan Mr Gomakubo Junji, joined the descendants of Zenadth Kes Japanese pearl divers for this year’s Obon ceremony on Waiben on Tuesday.

Obon is Japan’s national day for commemorating and remembering ancestors, and has been celebrated here since 2006.

Prominent pearl diver Tomitaro ‘Tommy’ Fujii’ was commemorated on the island with a statue, his daughter Chiomi ‘Chi Chi’ said.

“My father was awarded

a medal from Japan for his outstanding work in relationships with the Australian Government, the community and the pearling industry,” she said.

Priest Tetsu Yu said Obon was a very important national holiday in Japan.

“For a week or so a lot of businesses close,” he said.

“Obon is a time for us to pay our respects to our ancestors.”

Ms Fujii said she was proud this year’s event had been organised by the younger generation.

“You can see a second generation putting their hands up, and I think that’s wonderful,” she said.

“If we don’t tell our other younger descendants where we come from, our heritage will get lost.”

Bill Shibasaki, whose father was also a prominent pearl diver, said the Japanese divers didn’t get much recognition in their time and couldn’t speak English well enough to speak up.

“I think they should have got a lot more attention, they certainly did a lot of things around the place,” he said.

He said ceremonies like Obon, which the wider community was invited to attend, were a way of bringing people and cultures together.

Electrical business celebrates first apprentice

BY CARLI WILLIS A Waiben-based electrical and air conditioning business has graduated its first electrical apprentice.

Advanced Torres Strait Services business owner Tai Ward said he was proud to have young go-getter Nicholas Sabatino-Garnier on his team, now fully qualified in what was considered to be one of the hardest apprenticeships to complete.

“Nicholas finishing his time is definitely a benefit to the community and an example to locals that there is more out there for us,” he said.

Nicholas said his natural curiosity for fixing things drew him to the trade.

“I started wondering how lights

and fans work,” he said.

“Seeing them not working, you get this urge to fix things.

“I usually did a bit with cars and installing stereos.”

He said learning the required math calculations and formulas wasn’t without its challenges.

“But as soon as you keep progressing through each block, you start to get a better understanding of how things work,” he said.

“Word of advice is, even though things don’t seem to come your way, they will eventually, it does take time.

“Just don’t give up, keep pushing.

“And if it gets too hard, just take a step back and then try that out it again.”

Local author seeks to inspire young writers

Local children’s author Katherine Robinson seeks to inspire another generation of writers by running writing competitions at both Sacred Heart and Tagai Primary School this term.

With several entries already in, she said she was “blown away” by the quality of work students have submitted.

“The stories have been of a very high standard,” she said.

“Many have island settings, some are humorous, while others are heartfelt and moving.

“It’s inspiring to see the children’s creativity and passion come through in their writing.”

Ms Robinson, who writes under the pen name Lynelle Kendall, arrived on Waiben early last year.

In 2022 she visited 10 classes as a volunteer to run writing workshops and talk about the history of Book Week.

This year she said she hoped to double that

number, in addition to co-ordinating the writing competitions.

She said the support and collaboration with the schools was invaluable, and particularly thanked Tagai Primary School Principal Rick Cass and Head of Department Early Years Tamara Taumafai, and Our Lady of Sacred Heart Acting Principal David Graham and Acting Leader of Learning and Teaching Peta Mawn, for their support and expertise.

“I’m also grateful to the students for getting involved and sharing their stories with such enthusiasm and joy,” she said.

The winners of the Sacred Heart Writing Competition will be announced at their Book Week parade next Thursday, 24 August.

The Tagai Writing Competition entries close the following day and the winners announced during their school assembly in Week 9 on Friday 8 September.

Zone authority needs local leadership

BY CARLI WILLIS Zenadth Kes leaders have renewed calls for a nongovernmental, grass-roots presence on the Torres Strait’s Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA) after a recent visit marked the Authority’s first face-to-face meeting in eight years.

Legislation specifies the PZJA was to be made up of the Commonwealth Minister, the Queensland Minister and the TSRA Chairperson.

Gur Baradharaw Kod Sea and Land Council (GBK) chair Ned David (pictured above left) said he believed the third position should be filled by a First Nations person or body independent of government.

“I was part of the negotiation for the third seat on the PZJA, which is now the TSRA,” he said. “That position isn’t there to represent the TSRA, that position is there to represent fishermen and First Nations people who are in the protected zone.”

Mr David said he felt engagement with stakeholders on the ground was lacking.

“I’m sitting here talking to you about reforms that have been talked about before

2000,” he said. “25 years in the making, this is ridiculous.”

Mr David said a fourth seat on the PZJA would go a long way towards rebuilding relationships on the ground.

He said the Malu Lamar Registered Native Title Body covered a similar area to the Protected Zone and was the best candidate for the seat.

Zenadth Kes Fisheries board member Frank Loban (pictured above right) said he was passionate about ensuring Torres Strait Islanders were engaged in fisheries. He said he felt a rearrangement of PZJA management could benefit the region.

“To try and improve or enhance some of the islanders decision-making aspects in the fisheries,” he said.

“What I’d like to see is in the future [is] the fisheries managed

by Torres Strait Islanders and that Torres Strait Islanders are participating at all levels.

“We are a majority of the fishermen, we are a majority of the people who are buying the produce and selling it to domestic and international markets.”

Mr Loban said he believed those goals were still on the table and communities had never stopped working towards them.

TSRA chair Napau Pedro Stephen AM told the visiting ministers the aspiration of Zenadth Kes fishers was 100 percent ownership of fisheries.

“This has been a call since 1936, a lot of people know about the maritime strike,” Mr Loban said.

“There has been leaders in the past that have aspired for islanders to look after our own office, invest in the fisheries.

“Uncle Pedro has been a good person to pursue this.”

Mr David said the frequency of meetings of the PZJA and its outcomes was also questionable.

“How many actual policy reforms [have] they endorsed at those meetings,” he said.

“I believe this is the flaw in the current framework – the engagement between where the decisions are made and people on the ground.”

In a statement to Torres News the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) said the PZJA “generally” met three times a year and was bound by the Torres Strait Fisheries Act 1984.

“Changes to this membership, including additional members, would require amendments to the Act and none have been proposed at this time,” an AFMA spokesperson said.

“The PZJA actively seeks the views of Traditional Owners, including seeking formal advice from Traditional Owners on decisions that may affect Native Title rights. Traditional Owners are also active members across PZJA consultative forums, providing advice to the PZJA to better inform its decisions.”

High school pathways redesigned

BY CARLI WILLIS Course pathways for senior campus students in 2024 have been redesigned to better align with job industries in the Torres Strait region Tagai State College says.

Head of Campus Matt Tully (pictured) said six pathways would be offered: university (ATSAR), services (hospitality, education, tourism), trade (construction, engineering), marine (conservation, land management), health, sport and recreation (specialising in rugby

league) and cultural arts (music, visual arts).

“Exciting times at Waibene Koey Ngurpay Mudh with big changes in senior schooling,” he said. “Students will be able to study Certificate III qualifications whilst at school, and that’s a significant step up.”

Mr Tully said

previously the school was only able to offer to Certificate II level, and had fewer courses available.

“For example, previously we’ve offered a subject called Hospitality Practices, which is assessed every term with either an assignment or an exam or practical,” he said.

“We’re moving towards a Cert III in Hospitality, which is competency-based, which our kids succeed at far in far greater numbers than if they do an exam at the end of the term.”

Mr Tully said he hoped the adjustments would mean greater success in students’ areas of interest and better align with employment opportunities after school.

“Every school chooses those subject offerings based on their context and based on their area’s particular strengths and needs,” he said.

The school will also begin a scholarship program called Excel for students in Year 7 about to embark on their senior schooling.

“Our school motto is ‘strive to excel’ so we’re

starting, in essence, an academic excellence program,” Mr Tully said.

“They receive a uniform pack and a laptop, where they complete all their learning, and there will be heavy focus on twenty-first century skills.

“The goal of it is to eventually to have those kids really empowered to succeed at university, right along that academic pathway.”

He said the scholarship program would be open to students from every island of the Torres Strait.

‘Coding’ project makes interactive map of local seasons In an exciting intersection between culture, education and technology, students from 5A and 5/4B at Waibene Buway Ngurpai Mudh (WBNM)

have showcased their creativity and cultural knowledge through Telstra’s Code Club Australia (CCA).

The coding project was led by former WBNM teacher Kaye

North, now CCA’s Community and Engagement Manager, who said she was very excited to come back for the second year in a row to share her coding skills with students.

Students were given the challenge of making an interactive Torres Strait Season Map to align with their Humanities and Social Science unit.

“Students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, designing Scratch code that vividly depicted the distinct seasons of the Torres Strait,” teacher Jodie Harman said.

“Through their code, they were able to share insights into the environment around them, painting a digital picture of the cyclical changes in nature that shape their lives.

Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh held what was possibly Thursday Island’s biggest ever picnic on Friday afternoon, with hundreds of children and families enjoying an afternoon of delicious picnic food and great company.

Head of Campus Rick Cass said the whole-of-school rewards day activity was in celebration of the students achieving a collective total of more than 1000 Positive Behaviour For Learning (PBL) tickets.

He said the event was organised by the campus PBL team and Student Council – and was a huge success.

“This event was such a big hit with everyone – kids, staff and families alike, so much so, we might need to have them more regularly,” he said.

“Attendance on the day was up to 94 per cent, our highest for the year.”

Online sellers cancel deliveries

“I’m not making a massive living, it’s just enough to provide the service,” she said.

She said she’d like to see some competition, “so we have another option, whether it’s cheaper or not”.

Freight and Trade Alliance Australia - a representative body for the international supply chain sector - said while international freight costs were dropping, the dynamics in remote Northern Australia presented unique challenges.

Head of International Freight and Logistics Tom Jensen said in addition to no competition in the region, specialised vessels were required to suit to ports with no ship-to-shore cranes.

“The presence of a single dominant player in the region largely disconnects the local market from the broader trend,” he said. “This exclusivity has created an environment with limited competition, while global factors like inflation-driven cost hikes, persistent high fuel costs, and geopolitical challenges undoubtedly contribute to any price inflation.”

Regions were also waiting to hear how a $64 million dollar state government commitment

would target freight disadvantage.

The funding was announced five months ago at a Cost of Living Summit held on Waiben, and was to be invested over five years.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the Department of Transport and Main Roads had consulted with the relevant local governments.

“Supply chains in these areas can be complex, with significant distances and operational challenges impacting freight costs, which can make essentials like food, clothing and other goods more expensive,” she said. “The strong feedback received from the consultation made clear that the subsidy should be delivered directly to users on the ground.

“Minister Bailey has written to each of the mayors whose community will receive this subsidy, and I look forward to working with them as this program is rolled out.”

Sea Swift, said they were also waiting for the subsidy arrangement details.

“We are hoping the announcement will aid in easing the cost of living for these remote communities by reducing the cost of everyday essentials such as food, fuel and vital supplies,” he said.

A Zenadth Kes business owner with a small store on Waiben says freight costs have impacted their business, causing prices to rise.

Kelly Beckley’s shop runs 24-hours a day with vending machines full of a mix of essential goods and snacks.

In March, Amazon cancelled shipments to the Torres Strait, a bulk-buying source that Kelly said offered free freight on some items and supplied about one third of the items she was selling at the time.

She said the loss, coupled with high freight costs, had forced her to pass the cost on to customers.

“I’m only a small buyer so my freight rate is not at a discount,” she said. “It’s just at a regular rate and then you’ve got all your other fees that are included in that as well.

“Some carriers charge more for heavier and bigger, bulkier items.”

In a statement to Torres News, Amazon said delivering to the remote Australian islands had been a challenge since its inception in Australia five years ago.

They said deliveries were stopped at five remote island post codes including Thursday Island, Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, Lorde Howe Island and West Island Cocos (Keeling).

“Due to increasing transportation costs and limited logistical options, after careful consideration we took the difficult decision to discontinue deliveries,” an Amazon spokesperson said.

Earlier this month catch. com informed shoppers OnePass customers, who had also taken advantage of a free delivery option, would no longer have access.

For paid monthly memberships, free delivery would end for orders placed after 2 September.

Ms Beckley said she also took advantage of this service which supplied another third of her business.

Deadly Women’s success celebrated in Cairns PICS SUPPLIED Last Friday afternoon marked a significant milestone for 17 north Queensland Indigenous women from Cairns to TI who celebrated their graduation from the Indigenous Women’s Leadership & Development Program (Deadly Women) in Cairns.

Each received their graduation VET accredited certificates for Certificate I in Workplace Skills and Certificate I in Tourism (Australian Indigenous Culture).

The free two-week program was held in various locations over a two-year period and was open to any Deadly First Nations Women over the age of 18 years who had a desire to learn and grow new skills, meet other Deadly Sisters and achieve nationally recognised qualifications.

Reef & Rainforest Research Centre Managing Director Sheriden Morris said some graduates had already gone on to establish their own businesses and progress their careers.

“We admire these graduates’ willingness to learn and succeed despite the family commitments and demands many of

them faced,” she said.

“It is testament to their resilience and desire to become leaders in their communities.”

Graduate Georgina Dorante said she was able to move her business idea on Kirriri (Hammond Island) forward with her

new skills.

“My experience attending this workshop has really made a big change for me,” she said.

Graduates Leah Warrior and Rosemary Loban were already employed at Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Thursday Island in back-of-house roles.

Thanks to their new training, both have the skills required to greet tourists and run tours of the galleries.

“The Deadly Women Program helped greatly, it provided an opportunity for Indigenous women to learn, build and gain knowledge of basic workplace procedures and practices as well as business in tourism,” Leah said.

She said the course was, “a fantastic opportunity to build on my skill sets as well as self or personal development, especially as a woman who would one day like to take lead

in some form in my community, surrounding communities and my workplace”.

Senator Nita Green said the program was about giving a hand up.

“The fact is, living in Regional Queensland does come with some challenges,” she said.

“We don’t always have opportunities on our doorstep, whether that be education, training and services, any number of things.

“This program is about investing in the women, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties and grandmothers and providing a chance to gain some important leadership skills to women in some of the remote parts of our country.”

Deadly Women Program Director Lydia Miller said inspirational women were important because they offered an aspirational and empowering message for young girls and women.

“They provide a positive example that can make all the difference,” she said.

“Role models provide

a face and identity to the goals and ambitions that many women may have.

“They inspire us to believe that it is possible to realise those goals and dreams and not be defined by the expectations that society has set for them, but to strive for greater things and achieve their potential.

“Inspirational women offer a needed message of hope and ambition to women everywhere.

“We are the change.”

Throughout the program participants were inspired by guest speakers and site visits as well as theoretical study.

The many positive outcomes included: • An agile and flexible learning and leadership program in a community setting, to enable women over 18 years of age to have access and participate in an entry-level program to acquire skills and qualifications.

• Since commencement of the program in 2022, some 30 women aged 21-61 years of age have participated and achieved completion of the nationally recognised VETaccredited Certificate I in Workplace Skills and Certificate I in Tourism (Australian Indigenous Culture) delivered in four locations Cairns, Thursday Island, Mapoon and Napranum.

• Participants have gone on to further learning and leadership opportunities and have felt confident to apply to other leadership programs, knowing that they can achieve their goals.

Call for Indigenous voices to lead Australian response to climate crisis SOURCE: UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY Australia must address historic and contemporary systemic racism to better tackle the climate crisis – that was one of the key conclusions of a paper recently published in a special edition of the international publication, Science, which examined Australia’s environmental challenges.

The paper, co-written by leading Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research organisations, said Indigenous people held the knowledge to reform our relationship to the environment.

Authors included researchers from the University of Sydney, University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH), the Healthy Environments And Lives (HEAL) network, and the Lowitja Institute.

They said current Australian laws and policies limited the application of Indigenous knowledge for improved climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The review examined existing studies on Indigenous-led climate and health relationships and built on the work of a 2021 national

roundtable discussion on climate change and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, centred on the voices of Indigenous community leaders and advocates.

University of Sydney Leading UCRH researcher and Co-Lead Investigator for the CRE-STRIDE Network, Associate Professor Veronica Matthews said the paper highlighted the need to undo historical legacies of colonisation for the benefit of a healthier future.

“We already know how important it is to listen to and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities for placebased solutions around health outcomes,” Associate Professor Matthews said.

“What health and climate researchers are exploring now is how the same principle applies to climate change.

“The planet’s ill health has largely come about because humans have forgotten their relationship and responsibility to Country.

“Imagine if we could tap into the way First Nations cultures focus on deep, holistic connections to the environment to help us rethink environmental and health policies.”

network Professor Sotiris Vardoulakis said climate change provided an immediate opportunity to weave together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Western science to better inform government policy and direction around climate change action.

“We need to embrace diverse knowledge systems and be open to different perspectives,” he said.

“The reality is that tapping into Indigenous ways of holistic thinking will require different approaches to research and policymaking.”

A key point made in the paper was the need to address power structures and provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities equitable governance over their traditional lands.

After this was achieved, communities could revitalise and strengthen cultural practices that protect Country and simultaneously build respectful collaborations around climate change and planetary health for the benefit of all.

Lowitja Institute CEO, Adjunct Professor Janine Mohamed said the collaboration reflected the seriousness, not only of climate change, but also the significance of the upcoming Australian

referendum which, if successful, would enshrine an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice in the Australian Constitution.

“A Voice to the Australian Parliament, we believe, will unlock the wisdom held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that could help us tackle very real environmental issues,” Adjunct Professor Mohamed said.

“Australian Indigenous communities have adapted their ecological knowledge over millennia, yet our work shows this enormous well of knowledge is being overlooked.”

The paper concluded that in the Australian context an important first step in shifting policy processes to embed genuine and open engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities would be a successful referendum on the Voice.

“We have a long way to go in redressing past wrongs and embracing the strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture,” Professor Vardoulakis said.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) joined Far North Queensland artists and communities in celebrating the successful 2023 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) last month through their sponsorship of the popular the People’s Choice Award.

It was an opportunity for the TSRA to commit in a greater capacity to CIAF and to partner with the art industry to promote Indigenous Art. Among the many exceptional artists, Douglas Tamwoy stood out and captured the hearts of visitors and art enthusiasts alike, winning the coveted award for his stunning artwork Trade Wind.

TSRA Culture, Art, and Heritage Program Manager Charles (Chicka) Turner presented the award and congratulated Douglas on his achievement and recognition.

“We are thrilled to announce Douglas Tamwoy as the recipient of the 2023 People’s Choice Award at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair,” Mr Turner said.

“His artwork Trade Wind truly resonated with CIAF patrons and we congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”

Mr Tamwoy said winning the People’s Choice Award was an honour, solidifying his future as a recognised artist.

“I am deeply humbled to receive the People’s Choice Award for my artwork Trade Wind,” he said.

“My creations are a reflection of my identity and the stories of my people.

“Trade Wind tells the story of ancient trading practices in the Torres Strait.

“Stories like these are vital for my kids and the next generation to learn and understand, as it is their responsibility to carry on our traditions and stories.

“I am grateful to the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and the Torres Strait Regional Authority for providing a platform for new artists like me to share our stories with the world.”

Mr Tamwoy said he was a proud Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal man from Bamaga, with bloodlines to Badu and Erub.

As a FIFO worker, he said he balanced his work roster with creating art that celebrated cultural stories shared with him from his grandparents.

“I have started work on a new 3D piece, which I plan on submitting into the CIAF 2024 Awards,” he said.

“I look forward to revealing it next year.”

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said the TSRA had a longstanding partnership with CIAF in support of the positive benefits it had on artist careers.

“Since its inception, CIAF has provided a vibrant marketplace for our local artists to participate in, and connect with collectors, galleries and art enthusiasts,” Mr Stephen said.

“TSRA is a proud sponsor of CIAF, which for many of our artists is their first national exposure and opportunity to share their works with international visitors.”

Entries for the 2023 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award (GTIAA) have closed with artwork judging underway to select winners who will share in more than $37,000 worth of prizes.

Leading the judging panel this year was Nunukul woman and esteemed curator Ms Avril Quaill.

Ms Quaill has held significant curatorial positions with the National Gallery of Australia and the Queensland Art Gallery.

As a first-time GTIAA judge, Ms Quaill commended the calibre of entries and expressed her delight at the high standard and diversity of the submissions.

“The Award entrants have utilised variety and diverse media, woven with tradition,” Ms Quaill said.

She said she was particularly moved by the innovative approach taken by artists, especially in the realm of 3D sculptural works that skilfully conveyed ancient ancestral narratives

while remaining deeply connected to the Torres Strait.

“It’s not until you actually get up here and see the colours in the landscape, the animals, and even the winds and the patterns on the water, that you realise you’re learning about the Torres Strait through these artworks,” she said.

During the judging process Ms Quaill was supported by respected Cultural Advisors Flora Warrior and John Armitage, who provided essential cultural context in key decisions.

“I was impressed with the quality of works submitted by our young people for the Secondary Student Work category,” Ms Warrior said.

“It was heartening to see their inclusion, as it not only develops their abilities and confidence, but also ensures the continuation of our artistic heritage.

“I look forward to seeing more talented young artists emerge from outer islands, as they are inspired by the works submitted in this year’s Art Award.”

Mr Armitage said he was honoured to be a cultural advisor, working alongside Ms Quaill and Ms Warrior.

“Being of Indigenous heritage herself, it was very easy to work with and advise Ms Quaill during the judging process,” Mr Armitage said.

“When we explained the context of the artworks and the story associated with them, she immediately connected with the pieces and identified what made each submission special.

“I was very humbled by the variety of works submitted, especially seeing art from all regions of the Torres Strait, including the Northern Peninsula Area region.”

GTIAA was established in 2008, by the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) as an initiative to gather a thorough representation of works being created in the remote communities of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area.

Napau Pedro Stephen AM acknowledged the judging panel for their dedication to maintaining cultural integrity and impartiality.

“It is a mammoth task to judge more than 50 high-calibre entries, and we thank our 2023 judging panel for their invaluable time and expertise to ensure the Award stands as a testament to the exceptional artistic talents within the Torres Strait community,” Mr Stephen said.

“As the anticipation builds to unveil the winning entry, the TSRA extends its gratitude to all artists who have participated in the 2023 Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award.

“We look forward to celebrating the richness and diversity of our art and culture at the Award’s ceremony and opening night.”

The 2023 Award exhibition will open on 2 November 2023 with all works on display until Saturday 16 December 2023.

Jimmy picks up second Telstra art award Artist Jimmy John Thaiday has - for the second time - won this year’s Telstra Multimedia Award for Just Beneath the Surface 2023.

The work was a five minute video depicting the artist’s connection to the ocean, the waves and the wind, which explores the way the ocean creates cycles of life, death and rebirth.

“I am exploring the way the ocean creates cycles of life, death, and rebirth,” he said on his entry.

“If we resist these forces, life can be tough, and we can suffer.

“When we let go, then we can let nature take its course,

and things will be in balance.”

Judges said the video was “ethereal and emotive”.

“The imagery of Jimmy John Thaiday being caught and strangled by the ghost nets is haunting,” they said.

“The artist’s work is a testament to our responsibility in protecting Country, the ocean and all living things, because without our natural resources there is no human life.

“The viewer is drawn to a series of imagery that reveals just how vulnerable island life is today.

“We need to ensure that it is preserved and maintained for future generations.”

The incumbent will also provide administrative support to the Badu Island Interagency Group based on Badu Island.

This role will call for an individual who has time management skills, organisational skills, effective verbal, written and listening communication skills and basic administration skills.

As staff housing is not available, intending applicants must have the ability to live on Badu Island and we encourage locals to apply.

The successful applicant will be placed on a three-month probation period.

Salary will be in the range of Level 1 – Year 1 to Level 3 of the Clerks Private Sector Award [1 July 2023] subject to relevant experience.

Rabbitohs win over Dragons

Pride wins a nail biter at home

Alex “AJ” Johnston scored two tries in the South Sydney Rabbitohs 26-14 win over the St George Dragons in front of a big crowd at Barlow Park in Cairns last weekend.

AJ has scored 21 tries for the season and 187 for his career, just 25 behind the game’s all-time leading try scorers Ken Irvine on 212, and three behind Queensland State of Origin coach Billy Slater with 190.

Fleet footed winger AJ scored his tries at the 10th and 71st minutes and will be a key player for the Rabbitohs in the coming finals series for which they should qualify with three rounds remaining.

The Rabbitohs’ 12th win of the season lifts them to 28 competition points and into eighth ahead of a clash with the Knights in Round 25 and a guaranteed two points from a bye in Round 26.

Ezra shines yet again Five eighth Ezra Mam was one of nine Brisbane Broncos players who scored tries during the side’s 54-10 thrashing of the Parramatta Eels at the Gabba on Friday night.

The Broncos led 24-nil at halftime and look to have cemented a top two spot for the looming finals series.

Classy Ezra scored his try at the 46th minute and could easily have had a second six minutes later when he allowed hooker Billy Walters to cross.

Ezra combined well with halfback Adam Reynolds who scored 22 points for the game in a wonderful performance which also saw him kick his 1000th career goal.

Fullback Reece Walsh also worked well with Ezra in several attacking moves.

Gagai’s ‘masterclass’ performance Experienced centre Dane Gagai had a blinder in his Newcastle Knights sides 42-6 win over the Sydney Bulldogs on Sunday in front of a big home crowd at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Dane scored the Knights first try at the sixth minute and was dangerous in attack and powerful in defence.

Enari Tuala who has lined up at a Gordonvale Allblacks carnival scored for the Knights at the 38th minute.

The Knights led 30-0 at half-time after enjoying 60 percent of possession in the first half and completing at 85 per cent.

Fifita contract extended David Fifita has extended his contract with the Gold Coast Titans until the end of season 2026 and was one of his side’s best in Friday night’s 36-6 loss to the Cronulla Sharks.

David made numerous strong runs and had one try disallowed by the bunker and

saved two others with strong defence.

The Sharks led 20-6 at halftime and look set to figure in the finals series.

Initially the referee awarded a try to David after he jumped high to steal a bomb kick from the Sharks fullback.

On review, it was ruled out by the Bunker that Fifita was found to have knocked the ball forward on his way to scoring.

Dolphins star back Hamiso “Hammer” Tabuai-Fidow played well for the Dolphins which have now won only two of their last 11 matches.

Next week the Dolphins will be looking for a win against the bottom placed West Tigers in round 25 at CommBank Stadium.

The Northern Pride scored nail biting a 22-20 win over the Clydesdales at Barlow Park in Cairns on Saturday in round 21 of the Hostplus Queensland Cup. The Pride led 16-6 at halftime and held off the fast finishing Clydesdales before a parochial home crowd.

Edrick Lee scores again Torres Strait islander Edrick Lee scored a try for the CQ Capras who lost 32-26 to the Redcliffe Dolphins at Kayo Stadium.

Edrick is one of the best finishing outside backs in the competition and looks set to return to the Dolphins NRL team in coming weeks.

Hunters fire at Port Moresby Before a massive crowd at PNG Stadium in Port Moresby, the Hunters scored a 22-18 win over the Townsville Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks had led 10-6 at halftime but the local Hunters surged in the second 40 minutes.

Hunters try scorers were Morea Morea, Joshua Lau, Whallan Tau-Loi and Jamie Mavoko who kicked three goals.

Tristan shone for the Souths Logan Magpies in their loss to Brisbane Tigers and produced some amazing statistics.

Peters-Tillett combine to lead Cowboys women home for a win

A try with less than two minutes remaining by centre Jasmine Peters, after a pass from Tahlulah Tillett, helped lead the Cowboys ladies to a 16-12 win over the West Tigers in round four of the NRLW on Saturday.

Brisbane’s Totally Work Wear Stadium, and the Cowboys finished strongly to record their second win in four matches.

Five eighth Tahlulah was making her Cowboys debut after being injured and was

crafty during general play with many clever tactical kicks.

Jasmine had limited opportunities earlier but gleefully caught a precision pass from Tahlulah at the 68th minute to give the

Cowboys a 14-12 lead.

The conversion by Kirra Dibb gave the Cowboys the hard earned win.

Early on at the 10th minute, Tahlulah showed her class with a radar like pass to China Polata who

crossed for a try.

Jasmine and Tahlulah lined up together for the Indigenous Allstars and the North Queensland Goldstars in the Queensland Women’s Cup in previous years.

Inspirational Tallisha had to leave the field midway through the second half with a knee injury.

Essay was powerful up the centre of the ruck and it mostly took more than one Tigers defender to tackle her.

Previously the Cowboys had beaten the NRLW premiers Newcastle Knights 31-20, and lost 16-6 to the Titans, and 40-12 to the Brisbane Broncos.

On Saturday, at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium, the Cowboys ladies take on the Cronulla Sharks for round five of the competition.

Lions visit for AFL house students Three residents from AFL Cape York House for Boys were lucky enough to visit the Brisbane Lions last week.

Troydan, Jerome (Torres Strait) and Grayson had the opportunity to learn first hand what it was

like to be a professional Brisbane Lions player.

The boys met players, toured the new facilities at Brighton Homes arena, and even had Brisbane Lions gun – Charlie Cameron – face-timing their family back home.

AFL calls NPA home … for now The AFL action is all happening in the NPA this week with the annual Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre Cup kicking off on Bamaga Oval today.

Young people from Tagai State College, NPA State College, AFL Cape York House for Boys and AFL Cape York House for Girls will take each other on in the senior high school event.

The free no-school, no-play AFL Cape York Colour run also took place yesterday for our primary school aged students.

Garbutt Magpies hosts junior AFL carnival for national children’s day

Action at the Garbutt Magpies junior AFL carnival in Townsville.

BY ALF WILSON Thunder and rain didn’t dampen the spirits of hundreds of young Torres Strait Islander boys and girls who competed in the Garbutt Magpies Cup junior Australian Rules carnival in Townsville earlier this month.

The comp was contested by 24 primary school teams at Townsville’s Queen’s Park Touch fields on Wednesday 2 August, and organised by local Indigenous Club Garbutt Magpies.

Official Randall Ross said the event was to celebrate National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, the

“As many as 50 per cent or half the teams had Indigenous players,” he said.

“There were over 400 children playing on the day, and for the first time Bowen, which is 200km south entered a team, and Palm Island had one as well.”

He said there had been drizzling rain early on, but all the kids still wanted to play.

“At around noon there was severe thunderstorms and we had to take the players from the fields but that was only for about 20 minutes then the semi finals were held,” he said.

A young Matty Bowen showed

great football ability, the son of former champion rugby league player Matty Bowen Senior, playing in the rival code of Australian Rules.

The youngster lined up for winning team Ryan Catholic School, who beat Willows State in the final, and won the Wally Tallis Memorial Player of the Final.

Girls champion Queensland at AFL under 12s

BY VELMA GARA Three young girls have aspirations to playing in the AFLW in future after attending the School Sports Australia (SSA) Australian Football U12 Girls Championships in Albury, New South Wales, last week.

Sulia Ingui, Lathisha Waia and Nahla Moke were members of the Queensland Blaze team who competed against other states and territories in the week-long competition.

Sulia, from Injinoo’s Northern Peninsula Area State College, has connections to Boigu Island.

She hasn’t played club football but loved her fishing, camping and has performed at different festivals around Australia.

Nahla Moke has connections to Senpol Moa and Mer Islands.

She played with her school AFL team, due to commitments with basketball and netball.

Only Lathisha has played club football for North Lakes Eels in North Brisbane, and has connections to Saibai and Mer Islands.

The Nationals were very competitive, as the results showed, with NSW and VIC tied for first place, SA and WA tied for third, followed by Queensland.

AFL Cape York Development Officer Keiran Sciberras said the Queensland team did well to record two wins from six games, including a massive 69-6 win over the Northern Territory in the last game of the carnival.

“Sulia competed well throughout the tournament and kicked a goal in the final game,” he said.

“Sulia is proudly supported

by Bamaga Enterprises Ltd, NPA State College and the AFL Cape York House Foundation.”

Although Sulia and Lathisha said they would pursue sporting careers with AFLW, Nahla hoped to play WNBL and AFLW, following in Monique Conti’s footsteps.

Conti played for Richmond Football Club and has signed with Melbourne Boomers for the upcoming WNBL 2023/24 season.

BY ALF WILSON Power punching Torres Strait Islander boxers Rocky Savage and Thomas Warria-Utromu won gold medals in the heavyweight divisions at the prestigious Sunstate Amateur Boxing League Golden Gloves tournament in Cairns earlier this month.

The 85 bouts were held at Caravonica State School Hall with boxers from as far away as Tasmania, Orange, Albury/ Wodonga, Bendigo, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Boxers also competed from clubs in Yarrabah, Townsville, Cairns, Home Hill, Babinda, Weipa, Mount Isa, Charters Towers, Tully, Mareeba and Port Douglas.

Rocky, 22, came from Townsville Club Flatenem and has connections to St Paul’s, Darnley and Masig.

He took out the heavyweight novice division for boxers weighing more than 91kg who have had less that six bouts, defeating Dom Pelblast from FTS Club on points in his qualifying bout.

Rocky won a hard fought contest over three rounds, despite fighting with a painful wisdom tooth, trainer and former pro boxer Gonzo Hooper said.

“Rocky planned to have the wisdom tooth removed well before the Gold Gloves

but couldn’t get it done until afterwards,” he said.

“He fought with pain and had the tooth removed two days after winning the final.”

Thomas, who fought for Townsville Club Art of Strength, took out the Heavyweight Open Division beating Nick Ranglu from Redlynch in the final by points over four rounds.

JP to help lead national basketball’s reconcililation plan John Paul Janke (pictured) will join Danny Morseau, Nate Jawai, Kerry Williams and Janelle McQueen on the National Basketball League’s (NBL’s) Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Working Group as a new Co-Chair, in a move aimed at strengthening the League’s commitment to reconciliation.

“Basketball’s growth provides an excellent platform for First Nations communities to be involved across so many aspects of the sport,” Janke said.

Last year he helped the NBL launch its Indigenous Round at Parliament House.

Junior Rugby League makes history STORY BY CARLI WILLIS – PICS SUPPLIED Zenadth Kes Junior Rugby League was joined by Queensland Rugby League (QRL) state officials who presented them with the prestigious Community Club of the Year award in person last weekend.

It was the first time the seven-year-old club had won an award.

QRL State Operations Manager Darren Schoot said the win was a huge feat for the small island club, which had won against 455 other clubs and 67,000 participants.

“They connect to community, they develop kids, not just on the field but to be good people as well,” he said.

“That’s why they won it.”

The club started in 2016 with just 25 players – they now have 140 children and 15 permanent volunteers.

Junior rugby league player Kiyoko Sabatino said she felt the club won because players showed good sportsmanship.

“I feel proud that we got it because we’re in the Torres Strait, so we don’t really get like awards like this,” she said.

“You get to win tries and play with your friends.”

She said she wanted to see the club grow even more and do more trips away.

“I’ve been to the Laurie Spina rugby league championship and to the Peninsula,” she said.

“It’s like an experience I hope I can do more when I’m older.”

Terry Abednego volunteered with the club when it first started, and has been QRL’s League and Club Coordinator for the region since 2018.

He said it made him proud to see the club had come so far and overcome so much.

“It’s been a challenge getting the messages out there to the clubs and to the leagues, that playing safely is the pinnacle,” he said.

“That’s why it’s really important we get all our volunteers accredited and our players registered.

“We’ve come a long way.”
