STORY & PICS BY ALF WILSON Torres Strait and Aboriginal culture was showcased during the three-day Corroboree 2023 celebrations held at Townsville’s Central Park last weekend. Aboriginal people, Torres Strait Islanders and many non-Indigenous people enjoyed the event, organised by Big Eye Theatre as part of the North Australian Festival of Arts, which attracted by lots of locals and tourists from around the globe. There was lots of entertainment with performances by several dance groups, stalls including arts and crafts, great food and more than a liberal
sprinkling of yarning and meeting with family and friends. Big Edie’s Kai Kai food stall served up a variety of Ailan kai kai and was well-patronised. The Torres News was there on Saturday and saw excellent performances by the Komet TS Dance Group on a circle filled with sand just in front of the main stage. “It has been great to create a big corroboree where we spend time sharing our great culture,” Ms Sailor said. Former NAIDOC person of the year Professor Gracelyn Smallwood was also there with family, including her brothers David and Alfred.
