Former-department workers reunite in Cairns

More than 50 ex-government department workers from the old Departments of Aboriginal & Islander Affairs (DAIA), Native Affairs (DNA) and Communities (DCS) enjoyed a reunion at the Benson Hotel in Cairns last weekend. Organised by Nigel Tillet (seated far left) and Rosalie Raciti (seated far right), the two-hour event featured displays of old pics, glass floats, Bamaga wood carvings and Yarrabah pottery. Those with Torres Strait connections and memories are in the picture, taken by Christine Howes.

The cost of sports memberships, registration or participation fees in sports can be reduced by a voucher scheme offered by the Queensland Government called ‘FairPlay’, a second round of which was launched last week. FairPlay offered support for up to 50 000 Queensland parents, carers and guardians with children aged five to 17 with a voucher valued up to $150. Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said getting young Queenslanders involved in community sport or active recreation helped improve their long-term health and wellbeing. “We don’t want to see financial circumstances be a barrier to young Queenslanders getting on a team, connecting with friends, and staying active and healthy,” he said.

More than 177,000 FairPlay Vouchers have been redeemed since the program’s inception in 2019. Clubs and active recreation providers participating in or wanting to participate in FairPlay can find more information about FairPlay at www.qld.

SwimStart, as announced in May, was a new program due to open in late 2023 to assist parents to introduce Queensland kids aged 0- to 4-yearsold to swimming. Eligible parents, carers, or guardians can register their interest in SwimStart vouchers, also valued at up to $150. Register your interest and be kept up to date on SwimStart at: www.

Apologies The Torres News would like to apologise for the following: Torres News, 20 July 2023, Edition 90 & Torres News, 27 July 2023, Edition 91. On pages 1 and 8 Kunio Sagigi’s names were spelt incorrectly – apologies to Kunio and family. Torres News, 27 July 2023, Edition 91. Torres & Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) was provided with inaccurate information in a photo caption that ran with our story about malaria cases on Saibai Island last week. The caption incorrectly identified Environmental Health Workers Ezra Kris from St Paul’s community on Moa Island, Jacob Akiba from Saibai Island and Senior Cluster Acting Supervisor Dawson Mau from Dauan Island as being part of the TCHHS Public Health Unit. They are, in fact, Environmental Health Workers from the Torres Strait Island Regional Council.
