Iris hopes to inspire with TSRA support through rural leadership program The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) congratulates TSRA Board Member for Warraber Iris Billy (pictured) on her selection in the 30th cohort of the Australian Rural Leadership Program (ARLP).

Mrs Billy will join leaders and changemakers with a rich mix of backgrounds in sustainability and innovation.

TSRA Chairperson

Napau Pedro Stephen AM said the TSRA was a proud sponsor of the ARLP, the

flagship program for the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation.

“For over a decade,

the TSRA has funded more than 10 Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal participants based in our region to undertake this unique leadership program,” Mr Stephen said.

“We are proud to connect local people from the Torres Strait with nationwide professional networks and development opportunities to thrive and grow on their leadership journey.”

Mrs Billy said she looked forward to building on her leadership skills and bringing back learnings to community.

“Torres Strait Islander representation is also important in sharing our perspectives and lived experiences, so others can learn about and better understand the needs and aspirations of our region and people,” Mrs Billy said.

“I hope my experience in the Australian Rural Leadership Program encourages more Torres Strait Islanders, including women, to apply.”

TSRA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Vonda Malone graduated from Course 19 in 2014.

In June, the alumna joined participants onboard this year’s launch (7 June) on Sydney Harbour and reflected on her ARLP experience.

“I was sponsored by TSRA to complete the then 18-month program, which provided a great platform to grow, challenge the norm and step outside of your comfort zone,” Ms Malone said.

“The ARLP gives you the opportunity to build leadership capability and to bring leadership skills back to communities and industries.

“Investment in our people is among the most powerful ways we can empower the future leaders in our region and nation,” she said.

Service under scrutiny for NPA toddler’s death The death of a two-year-old child who presented with gastroenteritis symptoms at Bamaga Hospital earlier this month has sparked calls for an intervention into health services by Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council Mayor Patricia Yusia (pictured).

“The loss of any life, especially a child is heart breaking, especially in remote communities such as ours,” she said.

“Our communities are shocked by this tragedy and deeply upset at this moment.

“NPARC understands that the coroner is currently reviewing this case, and strongly urges the coroner considers an inquest to prevent the future loss of life of children

within our communities.

“The loss of a child to preventable illness in 2023 is inexcusable, and this is not the first time that our health system has failed the children of the NPA. “Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service needs to provide some answers to the

community as to how they allowed this tragedy to occur.”

Mayor Yusia said NPARC had raised complaints consistently with leadership at the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service.

“We strongly believe urgent intervention is required to ensure we have a robust health system that can care for our children and communities,” she said.

“Our people have the right to good healthcare and we will not settle for subpar health service delivery.

“Our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and community during this time.”

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Beverley Hamerton also offered her condolences.

“My sincere sympathy goes to the family during this extremely difficult time,” she said.

“Our health service staff are committed to delivering the best possible care at all times and our Bamaga Hospital staff worked hard to save the child’s life when the family presented to hospital.

“Our staff are Bamaga Hospital are providing support to the family during this time.

“Due to confidentiality, and as the matter has been referred to the coroner, we are unable to provide further comment.

“This is not the time for speculation.

“The coroner will provide accurate information on this matter once they have reviewed it.”

The third Lowitja Institute International Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Conference was held on the lands of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji and Yirrganydji peoples in Cairns last week.

The conference, attended by more than 1200 delegates, showcased Indigenous excellence in health research from across Australia, as well as from Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada, Hawaii and the United States.

Hosted by the Lowitja Institute, Australia’s national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communitycontrolled health research institute, key panel discussions at the conference included Voice, Truth and Treat with Australian and global experts, justice and health, climate and health, economic participation, research/data sovereignty and youth.

Speakers included Professors Marcia Langton, Tom Calma, Chelsea Watego, Lester-Irabinna Rigney, Peter Yu, Associate Professor Veronica Matthews, Sue-Anne Hunter, Maggie Walter (Yoorrook Justice Commission), Amy Rust (First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria) and Dale Agius (South Australia’s Commissioner for First Nations Voice), and former AFL champion Adam Goodes.

BY CHRISTINE HOWES Three Torres Strait Islanders – Professor Jaquelyne Hughes, Associate Professor Odette Pearson and Health Worker Betty Sagigi – were honoured for their outstanding health research achievements at last week’s Lowitja Institute International Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Conference.

Lowitja Institute CEO Adjunct Professor Janine Mohamed said the national awards celebrated excellence and contribution to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“Our conference showcases transformational community-led research that is grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, being and doing – our award winners epitomise that work,” she said.

Cranlana Awards for

ENTRIES NOW OPEN Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal artists living in the Northern Peninsula Area and Torres Strait region are invited to submit their artworks (created in the last 12-months) for a chance to share in over $37,000 worth of prizes.

Outstanding Research Leadership went to Professor Hughes, a Gumugul Woman of Wagadagam tribe, Mabuiag Island in Torres Strait, living on Larrakia country.

A nephrologist and inaugural Clinical Research Professor in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Advancement at Flinders University, Prof Hughes told the Torres News the award was a huge honour.

“It means that I feel special and the work that I do is special, and just gives me great encouragement to continue to drive health advancement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on their terms,” she said.

“It’s a huge honour, but also I’m just really looking forward to crafting my leadership skills and being able to see how other people lead and push through.”

Climate and health issues on Lowitja conference agenda M Continued from P3 Prof Jaquelyne Hughes said she was able to present some of that work to the Lowitja Institute International Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Conference the next day.

“So, I’m talking about the National Indigenous Kidney Transplantation Taskforce,” she said. “We’ve put in recommendations to the federal government to seek more support, to drive improvements about sustaining the action that we’ve done, about improving the access of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for transplantation.

“We’ve had three years of work so far and we need to make sure that we can sustain the great work.

“And that’s been terrific because we’ve been working across sectors, across states and territories so that everyone together knows that there’s an objective to remove barriers for people to access kidney transplantation.

“And kidney transplantation is so important, because when your kidneys don’t work well enough, your body doesn’t work.

“People use dialysis as a bridge to that therapy, and if you’ve got kidneys that don’t work, you might not be able to live at home or the country, and there is so much other sorrow around that.

“The other great thing I’m looking forward to doing is working with the Near Western Cluster group about driving kidney health further in that region, and including about situating a dialysis unit out that way so that people can come home.”

The Pat Anderson Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Researcher Awards, recognising emerging leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing research, winners were Associate Professor Odette Pearson, a Kuku Yalanji/Torres

Strait Islander woman who was awarded her PhD in 2013, and Betty Sagigi, a Health Worker for the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service.

Betty was part of Thursday Island’s Primary Health Post- Acute Rehab and Aged Care Program as an Aged Care Assessment Team Coordinator and Assessor.

The effects of climate change on health was also on the conference agenda.

Daniel Billy from the ‘Torres Strait Eight’, who successfully took on the Australian Government for inaction on climate change at the UN, and University of Queensland School of Public Health Indigenous Pathways lecturer Francis Nona spoke at a Climate and Health panel, chaired by Ali Drummond, last Friday.

“Climate change has impacted all of our islands in the Torres Strait,” Mr Billy said.

“Not only the islands but our culture and tradition as all those passed on for so many generations.

“Climate change affected our health.

“Families moving further down south, housing as well, and we don’t want that to happen, we don’t want families to lose their identity and also the rich culture because they’ll move, so, it’s really affected a lot.”

Mr Nona said climate change was a “wicked” problem.

“Now associate that with how we help recipients of poor health outcomes, which are affecting communities,” he said.

“When we think of cardiovascular disease, blood pressures, kidney, renal, we are the recipients of poor health outcomes that have been exacerbated by climate change – and that’s the link that we’ve got to now bring to the forefront with the knowledges of community in there.

“The correlation exists between changing climate poor health outcomes.”

Cook electorate Budget 2023-24 highlights The 2023-24 State Budget has been welcomed by local MP Cynthia Lui as it provides cost-of-living support, targets health pressure points, strengthens our vital education system, and gets on with delivering critical infrastructure, she says.

“I’m proud of how the Palaszczuk Government keeps delivering for the diverse and unique communities that make up my electorate, Cook,” she said.

Imagine a Traditional Owner’s surprise when he received his new passport and found a photo of Dauar and Waier in it.

Mer Gedkem Le Registered Native Title Body Corporate chair Falin Passi’s said he was overcome as he flicked through his new travel document.

“Words couldn’t explain it,” he said.

“I didn’t know what to say, really emotional, thinking about my family and uncles, and I couldn’t believe it.”

He applied for it to travel to the United States, and was one of the first owners of Australia’s new ‘R Series’ passports introduced last year.

The new passport included a stunning photo of Dauar – the birthplace of the Mabo land rights case plaintiffs Father Passi and James Rice – and Waier on its visa pages, as well as pictures of 16 other iconic landscapes from around the country.

The new travel document also included advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting and identity theft, the Australian Passport Office said on their website.

In the Centre of the passport was a picture of Uluru (Ayers Rock).

Under ultraviolet light the sky in each image became a unique nightscape and a local species of native fauna appeared.

The Australian passport was regularly upgraded to protect passport holders’ identity and personal information in line with international best practice.

The ‘R Series’ was said to be even more secure than the previous ‘P Series’, which has been issued since 2014.

The passport was called the ‘R Series’ because R is now the first letter in each new passport number.

People who have old series passports could still use them until they expire.

Georgina’s a deadly Kirriri success story A thriving small business operating a food van that caters to both locals and visitors on Kirriri (Hammond Island) run

by Georgina Dorante (pictured) is just one of the success stories brought about by the Indigenous Women’s Leadership and Training Program or the “Deadly Women Program”, as it is more commonly known.

“Today with all the knowledge I’ve taken on board, I am now a small business owner of a mobile food and drink cart called Kirr-Rock Munchies,” Georgina said.

“I do thank INLOC for this program as it was well worth attending.

“I am very proud of my achievement, and I give a high clap for the ladies who delivered and mentored us through to the end.”

The program fostered the development and leadership potential of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women living in remote areas of Far North Queensland.

(RRRC’s) remote training delivery partner INLOC ensured participants were supported throughout the training program, and mentored on presentation, creation of resumes, and plans for small businesses.

At the end of the training, they achieved a nationally recognised Certificate I in Workplace Skills and Certificate I in Tourism (Australian Indigenous Culture).

Program participants gained newfound confidence and skills, empowering them to pursue their dreams and aspirations, including working in the thriving tourism and arts industries in the Torres Strait.

Women and girls were strongly encouraged to apply for the next round of the Deadly Women’s program, to be held in Napranum in June and July and then in Cairns in late-July until mid-August.

TORRES STRAIT Marine Safety Program Increase your survival time and reduce your rescue time Good preparation is essential for your safety before heading to sea. Good skippers always plan for the journey ahead, but they should also plan for the unexpected, because there’s always a chance that something may go wrong.

Your engine might breakdown, the weather may change for the worse or navigational equipment could fail. Any number of things could combine to create a situation where you need to be rescued.

The two most important rules to surviving in this type of situation are always the same...

Increase your survival time and reduce your rescue time.

We increase our survival time through carrying and using items such as lifejackets, fresh water, food, sun protection and other survival tools. Good skippers carry these things on all voyages.

We reduce rescue time by using devices which alert rescuers to bring you help in the shortest possible time, and one of these pieces of vital lifesaving equipment is a registered 406 MHz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, or EPIRB.

If kept in good condition, and operated properly, the 406 MHz EPIRB will let rescue authorities know that you are in trouble within minutes of turning it on, if deployed correctly. Not only that, the EPIRB, particularly a GPS enabled model, will also tell rescuers exactly where you are, allowing them to commence search and rescue coordination as soon as possible.

This is the most effective way to reduce the time it takes to rescue you!

Please do not throw unwanted EPIRB’s in the bin – they can inadvertently activate if they are not correctly disposed, which often occurs when EPIRB’s are thrown in the rubbish and end up in tips. Every year, thousands of dollars are spent in Australia searching for EPIRB’s in rubbish dumps.

Search personnel and assets which are tasked to look for EPIRB’s that have been inadvertently activated are then unavailable for a real emergency.

EPIRB batteries are hazardous items which should be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

Unwanted EPIRB’s can be handed into the AMSA or Maritime Safety Queensland offices on Thursday Island.

After disposing of your unwanted EPIRB please advise AMSA by updating your online registration account or by phoning 1800 406 406.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority’s (TSRA’s) You Sabe Business workshops wrapped up late last month for 18 graduates aspiring to be local business owners, with more to come as applications for the next round of workshops close soon.

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said the most recent graduates were recognised at a ceremony on Waiben (Thursday Island) during Queensland Small Business Month.

“TSRA’s free You Sabe Business workshops connect local people with business advice, loans and mentors to explore

their business ideas,” Mr Stephen said.

“I encourage aspiring and established business owners to apply for the next round of workshops before applications close on Friday 7 July.”

Former TSRA Board Member and workshop graduate, Frank Fauid, from Poruma, said the business workshops were invaluable.

“We were able to complete the course, graduate and not only create a business idea, but look for economic opportunities to get our business up and running,” Mr Fauid said.

“I would like to thank the TSRA staff and facilitators for their support and giving us this opportunity.”

Mrs Atu said the workshops helped participants of all ages and backgrounds to better understand business.

“You are never too young or too old to get

into business. Whatever your dream or passion is, give it a go,” Mrs Atu said.

“It is good for more Indigenous people to start up their business and this will inspire others.”

On Country hearings in the Torres Strait for the Australian Climate Case wrapped up in Cairns late last week.

Lead plaintiffs Uncle Paul Kabai and Uncle Pabai Pabai have now planned to join iconic Greenpeace ship, the Rainbow Warrior, en route to Vanuatu to stand in solidarity with Pacific communities impacted by rising seas.

The Rainbow Warrior arrived in Cairns earlier this week in support of First Nations and Pacific communities holding governments to account after decades of inaction on climate change.

The ship came from Western Australia where it spent the past two months campaigning to protect the oceans from fossil fuel companies like Woodside.

A joint press conference will be held tomorrow to announce the collaboration.

Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul said they wanted to build a “bridge” from Boigu and Saibai in the Torres Strait to Vanuatu to strengthen mutual support between their communities.

They said they hoped that by working together they could help each other to increase the pressure on the Australian Government, and other countries to take climate action to protect their communities.

Also tomorrow, at 2pm, a panel discussion aboard the Rainbow Warrior about litigation for climate justice will be livestreamed.

The panel will feature Uncle Paul, Uncle Pabai, teen climate activist and lead litigant of Sharma vs Minister for the Environment Anjali Sharma, Greenpeace Australia Pacific General Counsel Katrina Bullock and Grata Fund Executive Director Isabelle Reinecke, moderated by Greenpeace’s Steph Hodgins-May. Australian climate case hearings finish in Cairns Federal Court hearings for the Australian Climate Case on Country were finalised last week, wrapping up in Cairns on Thursday and Friday. Hearings will continue in Victoria’s Federal Court later this year. Here is a summary of what happened last week...

Hearings for the Australian Climate Case continued on Saibai island last week with the Federal Court touring the island to see evidence of the climate harms to food production, cultural sites and burial grounds.

Court began at the burial monument to the last warrior who died in battle with PNG. Uncle Paul Kabai showed the Judge where the land eroded and a new monument had to be constructed.

He explained the bones of that ancestor had washed into the sea due to erosion, and his sorrow that the community now doesn’t know where that ancestor is.

He, Uncle Herbert and Aunty Jen showed the Judge where there used to be a beautiful sand beach, which has now receded more than ten metres, and turned to mud and mangroves.

Aunty Jen explained that as children they would play where the beach now is, fish, and collect shells.

The Judge was shown where the old sea wall was built and where the new seawall (built in 2017) is already breached by king tides.

The Court was taken to the cemetery to see how the beach has eroded and is impacting the graves of loved ones, and showed how mangroves have grown up with saltwater inundation and where freshwater trees have

turned to dead tree trunks.

Next, the Court saw where the community used to harvest crops, how salt water inundation has made this impossible now, how the food source for magpie geese is disappearing and mangroves are growing further and further into the previously freshwater environment.

After lunch, Aunty Jen reflected on some of the changes she has seen in flora and fauna, as she gave her evidence.

“The seasons have changed, I’ve seen this when travelling through the region and in Saibai,” she said.

“It’s devastating to think that this is our home.

“This is where we want to be.

“This is where we want our grandchildren to come and visit us.

“This is our home.”

The Court was then taken to beaches along the North Eastern section of the island, to see where the beach has eroded, coconut trees have fallen down after their roots have become exposed from erosion, and hear how traditional women’s business sites have been affected.

Court was then moved to the Cairns Business Hub for two days of hearings on warm, clear days.

Boggo Billy was called as the first witness and spoke about his childhood on Poruma and much of his later life spent on Warraber.

He explained that when he was young, he was taught traditional knowledge about gardening and the seasons for growing and harvesting.

Changes to the weather and soil have made it very difficult to grow crops, which impacts people’s livelihoods as well as the community’s ability to pass on this cultural knowledge to future generations.

Uncle Gerald Bowie was called as the second witness and said he was from Badu and worked as a Ranger Supervisor.

He spoke about different parts of his work, including the measurement of sea levels, sea life monitoring and school/ community education.

He said the impact of seeing the cemetery on Badu be washed away by the sea and tides was

devastating - it affected him and the community socially, culturally and spiritually.

He also said Dugong numbers had declined significantly and that had affected his community’s traditional way of life for current and future generations, and was also the loss of a totem.

Uncle Frank Fauid, from Poruma, was called as the applicants’ final lay witness and said he had observed the changing weather patterns and the sand being washed away.

He said his and his community’s identity was tied to the island.

He spoke about

the long journey of advocating with the State and Commonwealth Governments for a seawall to be built on Poruma.

A wall was constructed on parts of the island with geo bags in 2022 but does not extend to his home and he felt unsafe, especially

during monsoon season.

A further case management hearing will be listed in two weeks to finalise the dates and potentially locations of the October and November hearings, where the Commonwealth will call its lay witnesses and both parties will call their expert witnesses.

Capital advocacy from Councils at national forum level All three local Councils – Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council, Torres Shire Council and Torres Strait Island Regional Council – sent delegates to Canberra last week for the Australian Local Government Association’s annual National General Assembly and to lobby Federal parliamentarians.

Those they met in their advocacy for the region included Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney, Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Catherine King, Assistant Minister for Climate Change & Energy Senator Jenny McAllister, and Minister for Immigration, Citizenship & Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles.

Issues discussed included climate change, aging marine infrastructure, housing, CDP, Voice to Parliament, health and transport.

Referendum legislation locked in by Parliament Historic legislation to establish the referendum on the Voice to Parliamen, as part of a commitment to the Uluṟu Statement from the Heart, has been passed by both Houses of Parliament to set in place the Referendum process and time line.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the Parliament had said ‘Yes’ to holding the referendum.

“Now, the Australian people will have a chance to say ‘Yes’ to reconciliation and ‘Yes’ to constitutional recognition of First Nations people,” he said.

“I say to my fellow Australians: Parliaments pass laws, but it is

people that make history.

“This is your time, your chance, your opportunity to be a part of making history.

“This change isn’t about detracting from the 122 years of our democracy.

“As the SolicitorGeneral in his written advice says clearly – it enhances that system.

“This has been the culmination of years of discussion, consultation and patient hard work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people themselves.”

Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney said it was not about symbolism or tokenism.

“For too long,

Indigenous Australians have been consistently worse off than nonIndigenous Australians,” she said.

“The Closing the Gap data shows us that.

“It’s a broken system.

“And the Voice is our best chance of fixing it because when we listen to people on the ground and consult with locals, they make better decisions and achieve better outcomes.

“That is why we need a Voice.”

Referedum Working Group member Pat Anderson said it had taken a long time to get to this point.

“We have been calling for recognition, respect, acknowledgement since the first boats came here,” she said.

“Today Parliament did its job and now, as it says in the Uluru Statement: the question is set, the amendment is set and we can go out and talk to the Australian people.”

The counting of votes in Victoria’s Treaty Elections for a new Assembly is complete.

Last year the Assembly hosted over 360 community events and had more than 23,000 conversations with mob right across the state to continue gathering ideas and input about how the journey to Treaty should unfold.

Then-Assembly Members (pictured) reached agreement with the Victorian Government about key pieces of architecture to enable Treaty-making – such as the establishment of an independent Treaty umpire and a Self-Determination Fund to support Traditional Owners to prepare for negotiations.

The Assembly held its second election from 13 May to 3 June inviting all eligible First Peoples to help choose the people who will negotiate with the Victorian

Government a statewide Treaty to tackle the big overarching statewide issues like improving health, education, and justice.

The results are now in and in this second term the new Assembly will help empower the diverse Traditional Owner groups in Victoria to start negotiating Treaties in their areas that reflect their specific aspirations and priorities.

Outgoing Assembly Co-Chair, proud Nira illim bulluk man of the Taungurung Nation, Marcus Stewart, said the Treaty Elections were a watershed moment for the decolonisation of Victoria.

“This is selfdetermination in action,” he said.

“First Peoples in Victoria have spoken.

“These are the people who will represent us mob proudly and will get Treaty done.”

Gagai inspires in Knights loss

Courageous Dane Gagai resembled a wounded soldier in a war zone during his outstanding performance when his Newcastle Knights side lost 18-16 to the Sydney Roosters on Saturday in NRL round 16.

In the second half Dane suffered a head wound which required it to be heavily bandaged.

The star centre was fantastic in defence and also good in attack especially during the Knights second half fightback.

Roosters had led 18-6 at the break but were outscored 10-nil after that.

Several clubs including the Dolphins, Brisbane Broncos,

Titans and Canberra Raiders had byes.

Dolphins back Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow lined up for Queensland in last night’s second State of Origin against NSW. His Dolphins teammate Brenko Lee will have time to recover from an ankle injury and should be fit for the next NRL match.

Broncos five eight Ezra Mam and Raiders fullback Sebastian Kris also enjoyed the break for a week.

Cowboys home in thriller The improving North Queensland Cowboys scored a morale boosting 27-23 win over reigning premiers and second placed Penrith Panthers.

It was a thriller before a huge crowd of 17,277 at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Talented Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater scored the winning try in the second period of golden point extra time.

Both sides were missing five players on State of Origin duty for

last night’s (Wednesday) second match between Queensland and NSW. Watching from Origin camp was Cowboys star forward Reuben Cotter.

In other matches of the split round the Parramatta Eels defeated the Manly Sea Eagles 34-4, Cronulla Sharks belted Canterbury Bulldogs 48-10 and the Melbourne Storm rolled the West Tigers 28-6.

In games this weekend the Dragons v Warriors, Dolphins v Eels, Panthers v Knights, Storm v Manly, Broncos v Titans in a Queensland Derby, 13th placed Cowboys v fourth placed South Sydney on Sunday and Roosters v Raiders.

It will be interesting to see if the Titans champion forward David Fifita lines up for his club after playing in State of Origin game two just four days earlier.

Ladies State of Origin

A capacity crowd, including many Torres Strait Islanders, will converge

on Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium tonight for the second ladies State of Origin match between Queensland and NSW. These will include numerous spectators from the TS Islands, NPA, Cape York and Cairns who have already booked accommodation or will stay with family or friends.

Tallisha Harden is a first reserve for the Maroons side.

One enthusiastic supporter who will be there is Torres News correspondent Velma Gara who said she was looking forward to the match.

The kickoff time will be 7.45pm.

Footnote: Tallisha’s Queensland Ladies State of Origin teammate from the 2019 series, Stephanie Mooka, made a comeback at last weekend’s Island of Origin series on Badu Island.

Stephanie lined up for winning ladies side Kayin Kosals and won the carnival best forward award.

Warria up for next bout STORY & PIC BY ALF WILSON Everybody who enjoys boxing loves to see heavyweights battle it out and big Torres Strait Islander Thomas Warria (pictured) says he is looking forward to his next bout in Babinda on Saturday 1 July.

But the 104kg power puncher with doesn’t know if an opponent will be found to fight him in the sport known as “sweet science”.

“There is a shortage of heavyweights in north Queensland amateur boxing so I will go to Babinda and weigh in and hope that there will be an opponent,” Thomas told the Torres News last week.

Diet has been important for Thomas who has lost 20kg in weight over the past year.

“I eat a lot of seafood and protein and vegetables and that has helped me,” he said.

At his last fight in Townsville earlier this month Thomas lost a narrow points decision to the skilful Lachlan Duncombe over four rounds.

The big crowd which watched the pro-am tournament at Port Quays Terminal Complex cheered loudly at the big boys traded punches.

Cairns-born, 28-year-old Thomas is proud of his Torres Strait Islander descent and wore a t-shirt with the island colours on it with pride.

It was his third bout after an 18-month layoff and Thomas had won his previous event at Cairns in April defeating Mick Rangui.

“I intend having a few more amateur bouts and hopefully will turn professional after that,” he said.

Matty Rooney who promoted and organised the Townsville tournament dubbed the ‘Battle of the Port’ said that Thomas was a big crowd pleaser.

“The crowd just love Thomas and I have no doubt he will be a success when he turns pro,” he said.

“Outside the ring Thomas is a real gentleman.

“I will be offering him bouts at coming events and even after he turns pro.”

Thomas is also a quality rugby league forward, which is not surprising because of his size.

But he restricts his appearances on the football field to Allblacks carnivals where he lines up for Walkabouts team.

“I have played with Walkabouts since age 15 and they are like family to me,” he said.

On the subject of family, Thomas was also a relative of NRL and Queensland State of Origin star forward David Fifita.

“I am a big fan of David Fifita and call his mother from Badu Aunty,” he said.

Ladder changes in NBL1 Sailor named in team of the round

BY ALF WILSON Torres Strait Islanders will be key players when the Cairnsbased Northern Pride travel to Townsville on Saturday in a Queensland Hostplus Cup round 15 NQ Derby.

In round 14 last weekend, the Blackhawks beat the Ipswich Jets 34-18 at Townsville’s Jack Manski Oval.

Flying Cape York back Dominic Macumboy scored a try for the Jets to continue his great recent form.

Meanwhile the Pride played a 12-all draw with the CQ Capras at Barlow Park in Cairns after leading 12-nil at halftime.

Erub United players backs Bernard Lewis and Julian Christian will be vital for the Pride whilst hooker Jayden Hodges will hold the Blackhawks in good stead.

PNG Hunters lost 40-10 to Souths Logan Magpies at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

Hunters try scorers were Benji Kot and Joshua Mire whilst Trevor Solu booted the goal.

Another Erub United back Jon Reuben scored a try for the Norths Devils which defeated the Redcliffe Dolphins 23-22 in a nailbiter at Kayo Stadium.

The Dolphins side included

quality NRL forward Felise Kaufusi who is a former State of Origin representative.

The Mackay Cutters lost 32-28 to Tweed Seagulls at BP Stadium in another cliffhanger.

The Northern Pride sit sixth on the 17-club ladder, the Capras eighth, the Blackhawks 10th, the Hunters 11th, Norths Devils 12th and Mackay Cutters 16th.

MEANWHILE classy Torres Strait Islander Tristan Sailor was named in the team of round 13 announced by the QRL. Souths Logan fullback Tristan was skilful with his gamewinning performance against the Ipswich Jets, earning him Hastings Deering player of the match honours.

Tristan is a son of former NRL, Queensland State of Origin and Test champion Wendell Sailor.

He has already played an NRL game for the Brisbane Broncos this season at fullback filling in for Reece Walsh who was on

Origin duties for game one.

Tristan was the match-winner for the Magpies as he delivered a try and set up another two.

He also recorded 179 run metres, two-line break assists, a tackle break and three offloads.

The speedy Tristan also chipped in with the boot with 119 kick metres in a performance earning him Hastings Deering player of the week and Team of the Week vice-captaincy honours.

Hastings Deering Colts Premiership In round nine Ragarive Wavik shone for the Townsville Blackhawks in their 56-6 thrashing of the Ipswich Jets.

Ragarive scored two tries and booted five goals for a personal tally of 18 points in the match at Townsville’s Jack Manski Oval.

The CQ Capras defeated Northern Pride 38-14 at Cairns’ Barlow Park and Dmitri Ahwang kicked a goal for the home side.

Blackhawks sit fourth on the ladder of the 14-club comp, the Mackay Cutters 10th, CQ Capras 13th and the Northern Pride 14th with the Redcliffe Dolphins on top.

BY VELMA GARA Round 12 of the NBL1 North saw some changes to the ladder with Cairns Marlins entered the top eight, bumping out Sunshine Coast Phoenix, whilst North Gold Coast edged out Brisbane Capitals in the women’s competition.

Cairns travelled down south Queensland on a triple-header and both teams won two out of three games.

Dolphins guard, Teyahna Bond, had a big game on Sunday against Ipswich (98-97) scoring 30 points with three 3-pointers.

Her speed allowed her to score easy layups.

Shaneice Swain also had a big game with 23 points, five rebounds, nine assists and three steals.

Results for Marlins against Ipswich Force (111-98), Logan Thunder (68-108) and Red City Roar (93-79).

Other results for Dolphins - Logan (68-

108) and Roar (81-69).

Cairns guard, Curt Ah Wang, didn’t travel with the team, however, Anthony Mundine III played limited minutes off the bench.

Mundine III didn’t score against Roar but had 2 rebounds, an assist and a steal.

His first two points came in the game against Logan.

In the Ipswich game, Cairns guard Ky Stattmann scored 52 points and nine rebounds; shot seven 3-pointers.

His 50+ points is only the sixth in the current NBL1 league nationally.

In other results last weekend, Southern Districts Spartans won against Rockhampton Cyclones, 79-69. Jessica McDowell-White had 17 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists.

It was the third game for Rockhampton, they had won against Brisbane and inflicted Northside Wizards first loss.

Mixed results for the South West Metro Pirates teams – the men defeated Wizards (99-87) and the women lost

84-97.

Pirates guard, Chris Cedar, did not play due to visiting family in Townsville.

The Flames and Heat teams also had mixed results.

Flames were down by 20 points at half time, 28-48, but changed their defence for the second half which caused many turnovers for the Mackay Meteorettes.

They won by six, 81-75.

Guard Indiah Bowyer scored 16 points.

Heat lost to the Meteors, 94-83.

Going into the half time break, Heat were up by two points.

In the third quarter, they were outscored and couldn’t recover.

Heat’s Michael Cedar had 20 points, three rebounds and five assists; he shot five 3-pointers.

Sunshine Coast Phoenix had to win its game to stay in the top, USC Rip City had other ideas and won that game 100-84. Guard Verle Williams scored 16 points, three rebounds, five assists and five steals.

M Continued from P20 The valiant Eagles, coached by Wrench Mau, enjoyed a 15-minute run in the sun in the second half where they scored two tries that raised a faint hope of a comeback, only for the Raiders to hold them out.

Hard-as-nails Joel Maka was tireless for Eagles, leading his team from the key-position at hooker.

He and Kearney Binawel from halfback led the fightback.

While Eagles enjoyed more than enough height and pace in their forward-pack, Raider’s defence was stellar, led

by Alex Toby and Yaza Stephen.

The team endured the late Eagles surge to record a memorable victory.

It was an emotional

moment for Goemu Bau Raiders’ James Livock-Ronsen when the final hooter eventually sounded at around 6pm on Sunday.

He paid an emotional tribute to his teammates and to the Mabuiag community – on the island and elsewhere.

“I played with this team the first time I came to the Torres Straits 11 years ago, and now I come back here and won it now – it’s just too good of a feeling,” he said.

Livock-Ronsen said the Raiders had a specific plan for the Eagles in the final.

“We targeted them in the middle; they rolled us in the middle when they beat us in our first game [in the qualifying rounds], and good on ’em, they came out firing,” he said.

“But you know, I watched them when they run out [for the final] at the start and they looked so sore, so we come out there with intensity, 100-million per cent.

“We had a whole island behind us so I’m just very happy.

“We both had big forwards but I had belief in our boys that we were fitter; they all A-graders from down south – but where they come from is this island [Mabuiag].”

The Raiders survived an almighty scare from first-placed Wakaid Warriors in their quarterfinal match.

The boys from Badu targeted the left-side defence to great effect – three times the Raiders’ players spilled the ball on their own line, three times Wakaid had a chance to make them pay, only for the Goemu Bau defence to

hold strong and keep the Warriors at bay – 22-18 the final score the Raiders’ way in what was an epic clash.

The home Island boys Wakaid departed the scene with traditional song from their loyal fans, and with a respectful send-off from the Raiders players.

Earlier, the Warriors disposed of eighth-placed Surumau Gladiators 22-4 in the semi-finals.

Fourth-placed Magun Warriors effected the most thrilling finish in the finals.

The team with the loudest and most active fanbase trailed by two points (18-16) with less than a minute to go in their semi-final against fifth-placed Apudthama Brothers.

The Warriors strung together a series of

daring passes after the final hooter sounded and they somehow got through the Brothers’ defence to cross the line for an incredible try to win 20-18, at which our Brothers from mainland NPA could only look around, and at each other, in total disbelief.

Alas, the Warriors ran into a Roxin Eagles brick wall in the quarter-final stage, going down 12-4; that win advanced the Eagles to the final.

The Eagles had earlier accounted for Argun Warriors 12-6 in their semi-final clash.

Kayin Koasals completed a perfect weekend, undefeated to win the women’s division 2023 Island of Origin series.

Kayin had all the answers in the final against the valiant Pioneer Dames, with the final scoreline 32-0.

Mabuiag wins over Dauan in final STORY & PICS BY DARREN MONCRIEFF Raiders from Mabuiag landed at Badu last weekend, intent on staking their claim as one of the best rugby league teams in the Torres Strait – and they did.

Goemu Bau Raiders barnstormed their way to the coveted Island of Origin trophy after snuffing out a plucky Roxin Eagles outfit, 40-12, in a grand final played in front of an estimated 700 people at Joe Mairu Memorial Oval at Wakaid.

The Raiders’ 40 points in the final was the highest score by any team across the three-day weekend, which saw nine men’s sides play out a roundrobin series and finals (with a Top 8 to play finals) .

Raiders placed sixth on the ladder at the completion of the qualifying rounds across Friday and Saturday.

Roxin Eagles placed second.

Sunday’s finals fixtures fell under the ‘McIntyre’ system whereby 1st plays 8th, 2nd plays 7th, 3rd plays 6th and 4th plays 5th.

Mabuiag’s men signalled their determination early in the final.

Fullback Matthew Gibuma, later named Player of the Carnival, was the first to cross for a try, and in the first minute.

The team crossed again not long after to take the early advantage.

Both teams traded blows – hard and legit, however the Raiders showed more polish at the finish line.

Eagles couldn’t get a proper look-in until a late flurry that made the score line respectable.
