The Point on Waiben National Indigenous Television’s (NITV) current affairs program, The Point, will be recorded on Waiben on Saturday night.

Hosted by John Paul Janke and Narelda Jacobs, the program will feature a local community panel.

JP – Mr Janke – said he was excited. He said the opportunity to be there during the Cultural Festival was special.

The program – part of their The Point: Referendum Road Trip - series will go to air on NITV on Tuesday night at 7.30pm and on SBS at 10.30pm.

Ailan climate change hearings set for June Hearings for the Australian Climate Case will take place On Country in the Zenadth Kes in June.

Guda Maluyligal plaintiffs Uncle Pabai Pabai and Uncle Paul Kabai, from Boigu and Saibai, will give evidence of the climate harms experienced by these communities on the frontline of Australia’s impending climate disaster.

Faced with rising sea levels and inaction, Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul filed the Australian Climate Case in October 2021 against the Australian Government for failing to prevent climate change.

In this significant next step of the landmark case, hearings will take place so community members can give evidence.

The court will tour the islands to witness the climate damage already occurring: the cultural

sites, food supplies, homes and ways of life already in jeopardy.

The Court will hear from witnesses about their connection to their islands and the consequences if their homelands are lost.

Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul are seeking court orders that require the Federal Government to take steps to prevent this harm to their communities, including cutting greenhouse gas emissions in line with the best available science.

The case is the first time anyone in Australia has argued the whole of the Federal government has a duty to protect people from climate change.

The Federal Government is encouraging carers, the care and support workforce, people who receive care and support and the broader community to have their say on a draft National Strategy to make sure they can provide sustainable, high quality care and support for Australians into the future, and to make sure the people providing these services have decent jobs.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said public consultation on the draft was open.

“Every Australian should have access to high quality care and support, and that means we need to invest in high quality jobs in this sector,” he said.

“The care and support workforce is integral to the Australian economy, particularly as demand for aged care and early education services is on the rise.

“The Australian Government is committed setting a new direction for this sector through an accessible and sustainable care and support economy.

“To do this, we need to hear from those directly impacted by it.

“I encourage people to have their say on the draft Strategy so we can ensure it reflects the needs of the community.”

The Strategy focused holistically on improving the quality of care and support jobs within four key sectors – early childhood education and care, disability support, veterans’ care and aged care.

It also considered how the Government can make sure investment in these sectors was as effective as it can be so it supported Australians’ quality of life and our economic productivity and prosperity.

Torres Strait Flag Day a nod to proud history Warmed by the sun with the smell of the salt air and the blue waters of the Torres Strait framing the ceremony, Torres Shire Council hosted the 2023 Torres Strait Flag Day on Monday, MC’d by Deputy Mayor Cr Gabriel Bani.

The day began with the raising of the flag on Victoria Parade by the son the late Bernard Namok (Senior).

Bernard Namok Jnr reminded everyone the flag his father designed had flown in the Federal Parliament in Canberra and State parliaments throughout Australia, in government and public buildings throughout the length and breadth of the country, as well as on Australian embassies around the world.

“I was at the United Nations in New York and am very proud that the flag is flown there and that Dad’s vision has been realised in bringing our flag, the Torres Strait flag, to the world,” he said.

The sounds of the bu shell then went with a march to ANZAC Park where Torres Shire Council Mayor Yen Loban welcomed the community to the ceremony.

He reminded everyone of the importance of the upcoming national referendum to enshrine the Voice to Parliament in the constitution.

“I invite you to join with me and vote ‘Yes’ at the referendum,” he said.

Other speakers included Torres Strait Island Regional Council Deputy Mayor Cr Getano Lui, who was an original member of the Island Coordinating Council (ICC).

He explained the history of the fight for self-determination from the ICC until this day: from the 1936 maritime strike to the first Islanders Conference at Masig Island in 1937, to the creation of the only entirely Indigenous battalion in the 1940s to defend the Torres Strait during

the Second World War, to the Masig Statement, expected to be discussed at length at this week’s Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival, from Tuesday until tomorrow night.

“We are at the beginning of the beginning,” he said.

He told the school-age children present they were the leaders of tomorrow who would carry the fight forward.

Torres Shire Council Cr John Abednego, with Cr Bani, was a member of the Indigenous Advisory

Committee (IAC) who helped develop this year’s theme and content for the Winds of Zenadth Cultural Festival.

He said the theme – The Masig Statement - Malungu Yangu Wakay (Voice from the Deep) – was important.

The final speaker Phillip Mills talked about sovereignty and made it clear it was never ceded.

“We do not need to ask for sovereignty,” he said. “It is ours.

“It cannot be given by a colonial power, when it had never been given away.”

After the cake was cut, the community were given a taste of what was to come during the Cultural Festival, with performances including Neguams Dance Troupe from Mer, Dhamuw Koedal from Badhu, and dancers from Masig Islands.

“This flag day truly feels like we are not only celebrating our culture and our history, but we are at the beginning of a change the peoples of Zenadth Kes have struggled for so long to achieve,” Mayor Loban said. “It feels very special and important.”

Hearing Aus on the line Hearing Australia has taken a major step forward in helping close the First Nations hearing gap, with the launch of a new, dedicated First Nations Telephone Support Line, making it easier for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to access hearing help.

Operating since March this year, the Support Line has been

accessed by people across the country looking for information and advice.

Hearing Australia First Nations Services Unit’s Sherilee McManus said it was a dedicated service.

“Our First Nations Support Line is a dedicated service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as health and education providers

working in First Nations communities,” she said.

“It offers general ear and hearing health information and support to help increase access to culturally appropriate, timely and accurate ear and hearing health information.

“It was a key deliverable under our three-year Action Plan and after trialling and refining the service, we’re pleased

that parents, health professionals, educators and others working with First Nations communities, can now access the support they need by simply giving us a call.”

a timely reminder to residents to look after their safety and health.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Public Health Medical Officer Dr Allison Hempenstall said all Far Northern residents should be aware of the increased risk of infection if people came into direct contact with polluted waters.

Wound infections, dermatitis, conjunctivitis, and ear, nose and throat infections can occur.

Dr Hempenstall said all wounds should be immediately cleaned, disinfected, and kept covered.

“You should also consider avoiding flood water and mud if you

have broken skin or wounds, especially if you have diabetes or other chronic diseases,’’ she said.

“And please see a health professional or your doctor early for severe wounds, especially if the wound is dirty or becomes red, sore, swollen, or painful.’’

Wet conditions may also increase the risk of diarrhoeal conditions and diseases such as leptospirosis and melioidosis.

“For instance, we have already had five cases of leptospirosis across the health service region so far this year, compared to the one or two cases we might normally expect for year

to date,” she said.

Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria, which is found in urine from infected animals including rats, mice, cattle, pigs, and dogs.

“The bacteria can enter the body through skin cuts or abrasions or through the lining of the mouth, nose, and eyes by exposure to water, soil or mud contaminated with the urine from infected animals,’’ Dr Hempenstall said.

Dr Hempenstall said symptoms of leptospirosis may include fever, severe headache, muscle aches, chills, vomiting, and red eyes, and usually develop after five to 14 days following infection.

Deadly Badu drivers ready to hit the roads

The Queensland Government’s Deadly Drivers Program has helped more than 25 Badu Islanders on their way to attaining their Provisional Driver’s Licence (P1 and P2) over the past few weeks.

The program, supported by Meriba Ged Ngalpun Mab (MGNM), delivered training and licence testing support, including road safety education, to more than 30 participants in the community.

Facilitated by Barry Lea from the Indigenous Driver Licensing team, the program has achieved remarkable results including: • 10 participants completing the Hazard Perception Test, a prerequisite for the Practical Driving Test.

• 15 individuals completing practice tests for heavy vehicle licensing.

• Five individuals completing their birth certificate application and registration processes.

• More than 30 community members seeking general information on licence renewal, learner licences, documentation requirements, blue card photographs, and related procedures.

Barry said the program had been well-received by the community and said face-to-face support in regional and remote communities was critical.

“Having a local presence allows community members to receive first hand guidance from someone well-versed in dealing with various

departments,” he said.

“The Indigenous Driver Licensing team works closely with community groups on local road safety initiatives to increase licence ownership of First Nations peoples and provide pathways to positive social, economic and wellbeing opportunities that come with licence ownership and safer road use behaviours.”

MGNM Training and Programs Manager, Jillian Bowie agreed.

“Many people in our communities are unaware of the required documentation and prerequisites for progressing from their Learner Licence to Provisional Licence,” she said.

“There are other barriers such as outstanding fines, birth certificate registrations, and applications that often create further challenges when trying to secure a driver’s licence.

“Holding a valid driver’s licence will support people in securing quality employment.

“Having Barry and his team provide one-on-one assistance has helped people to work through their barriers and become eligible to sit the test for their Provisional Licences.”

She said the program filled a crucial gap in the Torres Strait with the success of the Badu program bound to support its return to other communities in the region.

More to be done on social and emotional wellbeing STORY BY JILLIAN BOWIE PICS SUPPLIED BY DEBRA NONA & MARTINE SLEVIN Expert guest speakers and attendees from across the country and surrounding communities were welcomed to Badhu Island for Ninu Wakainthamam Midhikidh – The State of Mind: Wellbeing Symposium, a mental health and social and emotional wellbeing workshop held over three days last week.

The idea was for services to sit together to try to understand how to bridge the service delivery gaps through listening and workshopping with community.

“There is still a lot to do,” Event Facilitator Debra Nona said.

“We need the whole community to come together and participate in these workshops so that they gain a better understanding of mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, and the services that are available regionally and nationally.”

She said it was important to include keynote presenters who were First Nations

experts, who knew and understood Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders and the daily challenges they faced – mentally, emotionally, physically, socially, and environmentally.

Keynote presenters included Black Dog Institute Psychotherapist, a Yawuru and Bunaba woman, Vicki McKenna, and the daughter of Mabuyag Elder Mr Patrick Whop, Nephrologist Associate Professor Dr Jaqui Hughes BMed FRACP PhD. Ninu Wakainthamam Midhikidh, or What are your thoughts?, was the theme of the event, which was aimed at addressing overall mental health and wellbeing, and how it affected our everyday lives.

“All services need to gain ownership of the future,” Debra said.

“We have received a lot of positive feedback from participants and are pursuing to begin organising another one in the near future.”

Also at the State of Mind Wellbeing Symposium held on Badhu Island last week was the launch of the Biznis Blo Yumi Project, marking the end of Queensland Small Business Month.

Meriba Ged Ngalpun Mab (MGNM), in partnership with Department of Small Business and Training (DESBT) and Gr8Motive Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation, launched the Project with a consultation workshop to identify the needs and support required by local small business owners, or those thinking of starting a business.

The session also introduced Deadly Business 2032 – a key action released under DESBT’s First Nations training strategy Paving the Way. Deadly Business 2032 was initiated to create an evidence-based, understanding of Indigenous small business strengths, capacity,

opportunities, and aspirations in Far North Queensland.

The Strategy was to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses looking to improve opportunities for partnership, business improvement, sustainability, or expansion.

MGNM Training & Programs Manager, Jillian Bowie said employment played a key role in mental health and wellbeing.

“The significant impact that employment plays in enhancing the mental health and wellbeing of an individual and their families is important to note,” she said.

“Creating employment within our communities though enterprise development is paramount not only to an individual’s life but to the community’s overall wellbeing.”

The Biznis Blo Yumi Project was a collaborative approach of government and non-government stakeholders who were committed to contributing to the Project leading up to a much bigger event planned for Indigenous Business Month in October.

One Business returns to Waiben for Small Business Month A commitment to empowering small businesses with tailored training and pitch-ready support saw Advance Queensland’s One Business return to Waiben for the state’s Small Business Month in May. One Business founder Leesa Watego (Iscariot Media Pty Ltd) and One Business trainer Tiare Kelsall (Kurnakoo iSolutions) joined local One Business trainer Kantesha Takai (Lola Digital) at the Thursday Island TAFE Precinct to deliver the final phase of the One Business program: the Meet the Buyer Expo Preparation.

Through the program, a handful of small businesses and entrepreneurs were able to prepare their pitch decks and scripts for an upcoming ‘Virtual Pitch Day’ scheduled for 20 June 2023.

Tiare said the opportunity to return to Thursday Island was vital to build relationships with

local buyers and stakeholders.

“We were able to meet with stakeholders such as Department of Youth Justice, Employment, Small Business and Training (DYJESBT) and Meriba Ged Ngalpun Mab (MGNM) to discuss ways we could further support local small businesses,” she said.

“Being on the Island was also helpful to understand the challenges that local small businesses face on a daily basis; internet being a major issue.”

Kantesha said she was excited to see the return of the One Business program.

“It gave micro businesses the confidence in taking the next step in their business journey,” she said.

“Transitioning from idea to start up or micro-business is a very scary leap for many people, especially because you don’t know what you don’t know, and

you don’t know where to go for support.

“One Business bridges that gap, giving valuable startup and foundational support, whilst nurturing business development.”

Over the course of three consecutive days, Tiare, Kantesha and Leesa designed logos, capability statements and other foundational resources required for small businesses to be eligible to pitch to potential corporate and government buyers.

In addition to training, they celebrated Small Business Month with a Blayk Coffee event at Lagaw Titui (Island Stars) Café; which provided a networking space for small businesses to connect and collaborate.

One Business has invited local stakeholders to attend the Virtual Pitch Day in June and confirmed that registrations would open soon.

Roadhouse offers friendly comfort has been told staff are amongst the friendliest you might meet, and always try and please their customers.

General Manager Tom Kelly said as well as locals, there were aways a lot of visitors from as far away as Cairns coming through.

“There is a lot of construction work going on up here and the trucks come from south, and we also get local Council vehicles and tourists buses here,” he said.

With the tourist season winding up into full swing the BP Bamaga Roadhouse now employs about 25 workers, 90 per cent of whom are local.

The popular roadhouse services those living in sister communities, Bamaga, Injinoo, Umagico, New Mapoon and Seisia, and has the largest fuel tanks in the NPA. The Torres News

“We have fuel tanks with the biggest capacity and stock more than we need to but want to be sure we have enough at all times.”

He said many of the staff had worked there for a long time, including roadhouse manager Bewan Idai.

“Bewan has been there for 10 years and the roadhouse has been around for 15 years,” Mr Kelly said.

“Staff are well known to locals.”

Being under the BP banner, that is also of great benefit to staff who receive the latest training.

“They get the latest online training which assists greatly,” he said.

The roadhouse has a café and mini mart restaurant which serves up tasty food, and also some is cooked at the nearby lodge run by Bamaga Enterprises Limited.

“We serve up fresh food as much as we can and try and keep it as healthy as possible.

The staff often do health kicks, ” Mr Kelly said.

It is open between 6.30am and 8pm daily

and customers take advantage of 24/7 services and re-fuel around the clock with a 24-hour outdoor payment terminal, offering unleaded petrol (ULP 91), premium unleaded (PULP 95) and diesel.

A 24-hour ATM is also on site so customers can top up on cash at their convenience.

The café offers hot take-away food ranging from dim sims and hot dogs to daily specials including hot and spicy chicken and crab claws.

Also some of the favourites include burgers, fish and chips, pizzas and sandwiches and these mostly sell out daily.

Whilst a lot of supplies are road transported to Bamaga along mostly red corrugated roads six months of the year, in the wet season it has to come by sea.

I asked Mr Kelly this thoughts on why the roadhouse was so popular.

“It’s like being in a successful football team, you want to be part of it,” he said.

“This may cause them to seek out information that confirms their decisions to make a purchase, while ignoring any evidence that suggests they should reconsider, or to be influenced by the original price of an item even if the actual price is still relatively high.”

She said it was important to be aware of these biases and take steps to avoid overspending.

Sydney Uni goes deep into Torres Strait culture STORY & PICS BY VELMA GARA A Torres Strait Immersion Day was the first time Torres Strait cultural knowledge was presented to students studying nutrition and dietetics at the University of Sydney last month.

Lecturer in Dietetics, Dr Alyse Jai Davies, said there was a need for more information about the Torres Strait.

“There was a lack of understanding and knowledge of history, cultural diet and health,” she said.

After organising an Aboriginal Cultural Immersion Day in 2022 she said she felt it was appropriate to conduct a similar program this year for Torres Strait Islanders.

She was supported by colleague, Dr Bobby Porykali.

NAMU Consultancy and 2 Footprints were approached to conduct the Day, which involved cultural workshops on cooking, creation stories, weaving and dance.

Consultant, Genus Passi said the day was a success.

“It was an awesome day of raising awareness of our eastern islands cultural practices, protocols and customary lore to 80+ Dietetic, local and international students, and staff at the Uni of Sydney,” he said.

Mr Passi organised family members from Sydney and Townsville to conduct the workshops.

He said he felt honoured and blessed to work with his sons, Genus Jnr and Xavier, along with other family members who were all recognised as emerging leaders of our Torres Strait Island community.

BY ALF WILSON Waiben-born Professor Martin Nakata, vicechancellor Indigenous Education and Strategy at James Cook University in Townsville, has been appointed to the board of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, due to be held in Townsville from 27 July to 6 August.

Thirteen international artists will make the trip to Townsville for this year’s Australia Festival of Chamber Music, five of whom are making their Australia debut.

His current research work includes two longitudinal studies of the academic preparation of Indigenous students for university studies, and the academic performance of Indigenous school students in maths and science.

NPA State College team kicks goals in Cairns Fifteen students from Northern Peninsula Area State College made the trip down to Cairns last week to take part in the 2023 AFLQ Schools Cup. The students, from the school’s Bamaga and Injinoo Primary campuses, took on some of the best schools in the Cairns region at the all day AFL Gala day event.

“All of these students have been playing AFL in-school with our Game Development team, so it’s good to give them an opportunity to show off their skills in a full contact competitive AFL setting,” Cape York Development Office Kieran Sciberras said.

“The teams we bring down from Cape York and the Torres Strait are always known for their steps, speed and hard tackling and this team was no exception.”

Sulia Ingui (Injinoo Junior Campus) took home the Most Valuable Player award after dominating across the ground all day, while Clarence Kulla Kulla (Bamaga Junior Campus) won the Coaches Choice award for solid performances both on the field and during camp.

“The students also had the opportunity to train with the U13 Cape York Eagles at AFL House for Boys, where they also had a tour of the boarding facility,” he said.

“It was great to have NPA Students from AFL house on hand to present our younger ones their playing uniforms.

“All of the primary school students are either friends or relatives with our AFL House residents, so they’re amazing role models for the younger ones, showing them what can happen with hard-work and the right attitude.”

Other highlights of the trip included a dinner and tour of AFL Cape York House for Girls, attending a National Sorry Day Dinner at AFL Cape York House for Boys, watching the Indigenous South Pacific vs Cairns All Stars match in Cairns and playing for the Cairns Eagles U13 on Sunday’s match against South Cairns Cutters on Sunday.

“Three of the students selected for this team will also make the trip to the Sunshine Coast next week as part of our AFL U12 Crusaders,” he said.

“They’ll join their 19 other teammates from across the Torres Strait, Cape York and Gulf Savannah regions.

“The Crusaders team is set to take on the best young AFL players in Queensland at the State School Championships.

“These opportunities wouldn’t be possible without the support of our program partners at Hinterland Aviation, Torres Strait Youth Sport and Recreational Association, Bamaga Enterprises Ltd & CEQ.” Three debut for the Cape York Eagles After attending the AFLQ Schools Cup in Cairns last week, three NPA State College players were selected to play for the U13 Cape York Eagles side in the AFL Cairns competition.

Dolphins win off the bye

BY ALF WILSON Indigenous cricket teams performed well at the Super 8’s cricket carnival held at Cape York’s Musgrave Roadhouse, with Mt Garnet men taking out the title and their women’s side finishing runners up.

The comp had 12 teams who played on three concrete pitches near the historic roadhouse.

Players from around Cape York, some from the NPA, the Atherton Tablelands, Cairns and remote communities participated.

Mt Garnet team organiser Josh Henry, who works in Weipa, said he was delighted with the great effort by his teams.

“Nikkalayla Collins and Noah Henry won the best junior players of the weekend awards,’ Josh said.

Junior boys were not allowed to compete in the men’s comp but played with the women.

Carnival organiser Will Rofe said games were played in great spirit.

“Batsman had to retire after the ball in which they reached 50 and bowlers were restricted to two overs,” he said.

“Next year we plan to have 16 teams and will put in two more pitches.”

Nominations for AFL’s Chris Johnson & Angie Nadredre Cup open Students are invited to put up their hands to participate in this year’s Chris Johnson & Angie Nadredre Cup in August.

Open to boys and girls turning 15-17 years of age in 2023, the Cups are back up and running after last year’s COVID disruptions.

The program will run from 15–18

August with teams travelling from Cairns, Tagai College and, of course, NPA. AFL Cape York staff will coordinate all logistics.

Cairns Dolphins had a successful weekend of games in Round 9 of the NBL1 North competition.

The bye over the previous weekend had the team energized and ready to play on the road, with great results and wins against Mackay (82-73) and Rockhampton (83-80).

They were down for most of the game against Rockhampton Rockets last Sunday, however, second half was a different story.

Cairns fought back and with about 13 seconds left, a successful three pointer by guard Teyahna Bond put them ahead by one point for the first time in the game.

Rockhampton had a chance to score but centre Lara McSpadden missed the shot, Dolphins had position, and Taylor Mole was fouled and shot two free throws which were successful.

Mole had 36 points with eight 3-pointers made.

Bond had 8 points and LJ Williams had 7p and 8 rebounds.

New Cairns import guard Jennifer Coleman, had 16p 5r and 9assists.

In the Saturday game against Mackay, Bond had 17p, 5r and 2 assists with Williams getting a double-double, 19p and 11r.

Shaneice Swain had 9p 4r but didn’t finish the game due to injury and sat out the game against Rockets due to the concussion rule and Jennifer Coleman, did well off the bench with 20p 7r and 6a. For Mackay, Denesha Bobongie had 12p, 7r and 4a.

SPLIT RESULT FOR MARLINS Cairns Marlins split the results of their games with a loss to Mackay (107-76) but backed up for a close win to Rockhampton (82-79).

South West Metro are continuing to win games but this one against the Southern District Spartans was a close one, 68-67.

Guard Alana Fraser came off the bench for the Pirates with 5 points, 3 rebounds.

Pirates men’s team also got the win against Spartans, 10683. Chris Cedar also came off the bench and scored 15 points and made three 3-pointers.

IN OTHER GAMES …

Darwin Salties were at home for their game against USC Rip City and won – 113 to 101.

Guard Deba George has been shooting well beyond the arc

and this game was no different.

He shot five three pointers and ended up with 21p 4r and 6a.

Forward TJ Diop was solid off the bench for the Gold Coast Rollers, with 8p 9r and shot 100% from the free throw line with 4 from 4, in his team’s win against Red City Roar, 86-60.

With games to be played this weekend as Round 10, Townsville needs to get ahead.

The teams had byes after an unsuccessful three-game road trip to South East Queensland, so they will travel to Darwin to play hard and hopefully get the wins.

Lee, Reuben & Baira cross the line for their teams

BY ALF WILSON Speedy Torres Strait Islanders Edrick Lee and Jon Reuben each scored two tries in round 11 of the Statewide Hostplus Cup rugby league comp last weekend.

Winger Edrick scored his double for the CQ Capras which beat Norths Devils 36-25.

Jon crossed for two four pointers for the Devils at Rockhampton’s Browne Park on Saturday.

Jon is also an outside back and is one of the fastest players in the 15

team comp.

Both have played numerous Allblacks carnivals with Edrick having lined up for Badu team Kulpiyam and Jon for Erub United.

Edrick has played one NRL match for the Redcliffe Dolphins this season and should have more games for the team in coming weeks.

That fine effort by Edrick follows his two tries for the Capras the previous week.

Meanwhile the Cairns based Northern Pride scored a 22-16 victory over the PNG Hunters.

Christian, who has been a regular Erub United player, was impressive.

The Mackay Cutters went down 30-28 to Brisbane Tigers in a close encounter at BB Print Stadium.

Townsville Blackhawks had a bye and are placed 10th.

CQ Capras are sitting fourth, the Northern Pride ninth, the PNG Hunters 11th and Cutters 15th.

HASTINGS DEERING COLTS PREMIERSHIP ROUND 6 Rising young star Brenton Baira shone for the Redcliffe Dolphins in the 54-12 victory over Souths Logan Magpies Colts.

Brenton scored a try and with radar like accuracy also kicked nine goals for a wonderful personal total of 22 points.

CQ Capras drew with Norths Devils 26-all with both teams scoring five tries.

Mackay Cutters went down 30-14 to Brisbane Tigers and the Townsville Blackhawks had a bye.

Brenton’s Dolphins are top of the table in the division with Blackhawks fifth, the Cutters eighth, the Capras 12th and the Northern Pride 13th.

In round seven, Townsville Blackhawks v Wynnum Manly at Townsville, and the Pride travel away to meet the Ipswich Jets.

Rookie Sailor works with Mam in hard-to-beat combination

Playing his first match for the Broncos, the 24-year-old Tristan lined up at fullback in place of Reece Walsh who was in the Queensland State of Origin team.

Tristan has the ideal pedigree to be a quality NRL player as the son of former Broncos, Queensland Maroons and Test great Wendell Sailor.

The speedy Tristan previously played five NRL matches for St George Dragons back in 2020, and has been shining in the Queensland Cup this season before his promotion to the Broncos.

Tristan and Ezra produced incredible try-saving tackles in the opening 30 minutes against the Warriors in New Zealand.

Tristan got his hand under a ball of a Warriors player who had crossed the line and was awarded a try by the referee.

However the bunker overturned the decision and replays showed that Tristan has saved a four pointer.

“That’s no try! What an effort. Well done, that’s the tackle of the season that one,” Fox Sport commentator Steve Roach said.

Five eighth Ezra’s miraculous save came afterwards when he held up Warriors winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in the corner.

Fox Sport commentator Warren Smith said “What a tackle that is. Tristan Sailor and now Ezra Mam, both saving tries for the Broncos in the exact same piece of the field.”

Ezra topped off a fine performance with a try in the 53rd minute.

He relished lining up next to champion halfback Adam Reynolds and the win saw the Broncos sitting on top of the NRL ladder.

The depleted Broncos were without Origin players Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo, Payne Haas, Thomas Flegler and Pat Carrigan.

BRENKO SOLID FOR DOLPHINS Powerful centre Brenko Lee was solid in attack and defence for the Dolphins in their 26-12 win over St George Dragons in NRL round 13 last Thursday night.

Brenko made numerous strong runs and fired out precision passes to set up two tries and made many tackles. One of the biggest centres in the comp, Brenko is a key member of the Dolphins backline.

They now sit sixth on the NRL ladder and meet the Warriors at Auckland in the next round.
