STORY ALF WILSON & CHRISTINE HOWES As Labour Day was celebrated in Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane and across Queensland last week, Australian Council of Unions (ACTU) Secretary Sally McManus says she is looking forward to celebrating the day on Waiben later this month.

The Torres Strait march was scheduled for 5pm on Friday 19 May from ANZAC Park.

Supporters will march to the Thursday Island Bowls Club for speeches and a seated Ailan feast from 6pm onwards.

Ms McManus said unity was strength.

“I’m really looking forward to joining the Thursday Island community for the Labour Day march,” she said.

“Labour Day is about coming together as a community as we celebrate past wins and call for a

better tomorrow. Our unity is our strength.

“I look forward to talking with and listening to Torres Strait Islanders, as we support a ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming Voice referendum.”

Ms McManus told the Labour Day march in Cairns last Saturday unions across Australia were getting behind the ‘Yes’ vote.

“We are just so honoured that we live on a country which has the oldest

living culture in the world, 65,000 years, and it needs to be recognised in our constitution, something all Australians could be proud of, and the least they deserve is to be consulted on things that affect them,” she said.

The forthcoming referendum was also a strong theme in Townsville, where Maritime Union of Australia life member Patrick Neliman (pictured) also called on the crowd to

vote ‘Yes’ for the Voice.

“I urge everybody to vote ‘Yes’ for the Voice,” he said.

His view on the forthcoming referendum was echoed by Letitia Murgha, a member of the Queensland Teachers Union.

Ms Murgha has worked at Weipa on Cape York and Palm Island.

“Every single one of those here today supports the ‘Yes’ vote and that is so good to see,” she said.

member Jeffrey Abednego said it was great to get together to fight for workers rights, while Phillip Alley from Older Persons Community Service said he was delighted with the huge turnout.

Fairer rental laws under examination Public consultation is open for Stage 2 rental law reforms, which aim to increase fairness for renters and provide certainty for rental property owners.

The consultation started last month and closes at 5pm on Monday 29 May. All Queenslanders have been urged to have their say, Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch said.

“Many people in Queensland right now are facing housing pressures, none more so than the over a third of Queensland households

who rent,” she said.

“To tackle these pressures, we’re pursuing Stage 2 rental law reforms which build on the rental reforms we successfully delivered in 2021.

“Our reforms aim to strike the right balance between the needs of the community, while also supporting continued investment in the housing market.

“We welcome input from the public and stakeholders on our Stage 2 rental law reforms and encourage them to have their say over the next six weeks.”

The Stage 2 reforms cover five key priority areas, including: • making it easier for renters to install safety, security and accessibility measures they need in their rental property; • supporting parties to negotiate about making minor personalisation changes to rental properties; • better balancing of renters’ rights to privacy and quiet enjoyment with property owners’ entry rights; • ensuring rental bond

settings provide appropriate security and parties are transparent and accountable about any claims against the bond when the tenancy ends; and, • ensuring rent payment, utility and reletting fees and charges are fair and reasonable.

Heart Week is Australia’s national heart health awareness week held in the first week of May each year, providing an opportunity conversations about heart health and taking three simple, positive steps to reduce their heart disease risk.

The three steps are: 1. Measure your blood pressure 2. Calculate your heart age 3. Book a Heart Health check This year the Heart Foundation will focus on blood pressure and the need for a heart health check, which takes just 30 minutes and can save your life.

Monash School of Biological Sciences Associate Professor Francine Marques said high blood pressure was the number one risk factor for death.

“Yet, it is a preventable disease,” he said.

“We can work together to raise awareness about high blood pressure and help our community to understand what they

can do to reduce their risk.”

Monash Victorian Heart Institute Head of Healthy Lifestyle Research Program Associate Professor Lisa Moran said they were studying the effects of nutrition on the occurrence of diseases, including heart disease.

“Many of the key risk factors for heart disease are called behavioural risk factors which means that we can improve them ourselves,” she said.

“These include diet, exercise and smoking.

“By targeting these behaviours, up to 80 per cent of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided.”

Monash University Department of Surgery (School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health) Head Professor Julian Smith said health checks were vital.

“Health checks are vital in detecting heart disease especially in the early stages, because if treated early and successfully, the patient may not need surgery,” he said.

Medical supplies a concern under new policy

BY JEN ENOSA & CHRISTINE HOWES Existing concerns about pharmaceutical supplies have been heightened by a recent government commitment to double prescription lengths in next week’s Federal Budget.

The changes, supported by the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), follow a 2018 recommendation

from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee that said 60 days’ supply and 12-month scripts should be available for some medicines.

TI Pharmacy pharmacists David Paulmert and Carli Berrill have produced an online video outlining their concerns about the changes, which they say will cause major supply issues and shortages for the 3000 – 4000 Torres Strait patients they service.

“And while it sounds like it might be a good

idea, in practise we expect it to be pretty disastrous.

“There already are a lot of medication shortages, so we expect it to make them a lot worse, and we see that affecting everyone in

the Torres Strait and the NPA region.”

He said the effect would be almost immediate when the policy was phased in from September this year.

“The shortages will probably happen immediately,” he said.

“As people down south get two months of their medication, other people are going to be left with nothing.

“Unfortunately, I’m worried that we are the ones left with nothing because we are the ones that are furthest away from supply.”

He said most of their revenue came from dispensing medications.

“Now the government is removing money from that aspect of our business, we may have to re-evaluate the way the business operates,” he said.

“We may have to charge more for different services, reduce staff, add fees or change.”

RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins said the proposal meant, “improving access to the GPs by not clogging up the system by having to go back for scripts that

people are on long-term, such as for hypertension or high cholesterol”.

David said he could see the government was trying to make medicines more affordable.

“Which is great, I think medicines should be more affordable for people,” he said.

“There’s not much I can say except there’s going to be shortages – I don’t see a modification to this being the answer, I think we need to go back to the drawing board about this policy.”

He said unions had previously fought for payment of Stolen Wages and the removal of laws that forced many First Nations People to

work for free or below the minimum wage.

“The upcoming referendum is an opportunity to make change, and it is also a time to stand shoulder to shoulder with them and vote Yes for meaningful, practical change across all areas of their lives,” he said.

Local cadets supported by HMAS Cairns on ANZAC Day

BY ALF WILSON ANZAC Day on Thursday Island was a huge event with members from HMAS Cairns and local Navy cadets turning out with hundreds of locals for the commemrorations.

PO Gordon Adams told the crowd their Commanding Officer of HMAS Cairns, Commander Santos CSC had sent his apologies.

“Four other Navy members behind me make up the catafalque party – Leading Seaman Wosomo, Leading Seaman Curry, Leading Seaman Weazel and SMN Mudu,” he said. “I would like to thank you all for having us here today.”

PO Adams said he served in the Royal Australian Navy for almost 17 years as an Electronics Technician.

“My grandfather, William Joseph Hodges, was born and raised here on TI,” he said.

“Working on the pearl luggers as a young man, he had a number of jobs before eventually moving to Bowen to cut cane, this is where he met and married my nana, Mary Elizabeth Nicol, a strong Aboriginal woman from the Juru tribe of the Birri Gubba Nation, which is Country between Bowen and Ayr. “My Grandfather’s Uncle, Private Daniel Hodges, who was also born here on TI, served in the First World War, embarking on 20 April 1916 attached to the 47th Australian Infantry Battalion.

“As for myself, and my brother and sisters behind me here today.

“We represent a small number of Indigenous men and women who continue to serve not only in the RAN, but across all three services of the ADF. “And we can continue to do this because of the sacrifices made by the men and women named on the Honour Roll wall behind me of whom we guard today.

“But not only them, it’s all of you here today, and all of our families and friends in communities around this Country who continue to sacrifice and support us wherever our duties take us, so thank you.”

He said he wanted to thank Belford Lui and the Thursday Island RSL, 51st FNQR and all those involved for extending the invitation and allowing them to be there.

“All five of us Navy members here today have been a part of ANZAC Day ceremonies across this Country and across the world during our time serving in this uniform,” he said.

“But there’s nothing more special than coming back home, back to community, being able to honour our Indigenous and non-Indigenous men and women, who have served and continue to serve, and doing this in front of our family and friends is something that we are very thankful for.

“Hopefully it is something we can continue to do for many years to come. Big Esso.”

HMAS Cairns Commanding Officer, Commander Alfonso Santos said in a statement that it was an “absolute privilege” to be represented by proud Indigenous serving members.

“These men and women are exceptional in their roles within Defence and the trip to the Torres to represent their people amongst other Indigenous Australians was of great importance to our command,” Commander Santos said.

“HMAS Cairns boasts a large number of Indigenous sailors and officers who serve our country with dedication and selflessness.

“Recruitment of Indigenous people into Defence is always a focus and there are several entry pathways for those interested including the Navy Indigenous Development Program which is situated in Cairns.”

51FNQR recruits qualify 51st Battalion, Far North Queensland Regiment (51 FNQR) conducted a presentation of Slouch Hats to recognise the completion of initial training at Porton Barracks in Edmonton near Cairns late last month.

Recruits were from remote communities across Far North Queensland including Yarrabah, Mareeba, Napranum, Weipa and the Torres Strait Islands of Murray, Stephen and Darnley.

The new recruits successfully completed four weeks training which included the Regional Force Surveillance List (RFSL) recruit course and initial employment training

as either a patrolman or combat support operator.

The recruits are now qualified Privates for the conduct and/or support to reconnaissance and surveillance patrols across the Far North.

MEANWHILE 51 FNQR congratulated the newest Sarpeye CPL Talei Elu who enlisted as a Local Observer Element (LOE) last week.

Talei was in Canberra due to study commitments but said she did it for her deep sense of obligation to protect her home.

“I’ve joined the Regional Fire Services and State Emergency Service, and wanted to contribute and challenge myself more, to learn to

be more resilient and to be part of a team again,” she said.

“I would encourage more women in our region to consider joining Sarpeye, at present there are only a few of us girls enlisted as reservists, this is an incredible way to become more skilled and to be part of something greater.”

Former Commanding Officer of the 51st FNQR Clare O’Neill was at Talei’s enlistments ceremony and presented her with a 51st FNQR Medallion and gift.

She congratulated Talei, and said she was proud to have another female enlist in Sarpeye to contribute her skills to the protection of the region.

Frontier Wars remembered For the seventh year in a row Traditional Owners and the Cairns community have come together on ANZAC Day eve to acknowledge and remember battles and massacres in the Frontier Wars that happened across Cairns and the region.

The wreath they made for the event was then laid at the dawn service the next morning, as it has been since the event was first conceived in 2016.

“We do have a gathering every year and it’s getting bigger,” local Gimuy Walaburra Yidinji Elder Theresa Dewar said. “It is very important for us to meet on that day to remember what went on in the war that was in this country first – it involved our ancestors, it involved the early settlers, and it was on both sides.”

Her sister Elaine Thomas, also a local Elder, said the early Frontier Wars were often forgotten.

“These events are appearing all over Australia now,” she said. “We’ve got Indigenous and non-indigenous people gathering with us, and they’re getting more understanding of what we’ve been saying for years – it happened here, and it happened across our region.”

Rachel Repee Sailor’s tombstone unveiling STORY AND PICS BY BEL LUI Despite the very hot recent Saturday morning, a big crowd of the family and friends of the late Rachel Sailor participated in the unveiling ceremony of her gravestone to mark the ending of the cultural grieving process.

A big contingent travelled from Thursday Island and the Torres Strait, and other centres on the mainland.

The Late Rachel Sailor was a member of a very big family who came from Seim Village, Erub (Darnley Island).

The ceremony was officiated

by Pastor Mua Sailor and assisted

by MCs Tommy and Reggie Pau. Afterwards everyone retired to the Cairns Band Hall on Mulgrave Road for an evening of traditional celebration feast and entertainments that was very much appreciated by all who attended.

Grandiose statements such as these often get thrown around, aiming to inspire and motivate and often do, albeit temporarily.

The concept Malcolm X discusses in the above quote is “preparing for the future today, through education”.

So how do we prepare, and how do we encourage our students to prepare for their future?

Firstly, it’s belief.

Belief, that they matter, that they can achieve to their potential, that the hard work is worth it.

But belief and confidence comes from consistently succeeding in achieving our goals.

How then, do we achieve our goals?

One step at a time.

Discipline.

Commitment.

Success is a marathon, not a sprint.

BY VELMA GARA A great friendship was forged when Townsville Fire basketballer Steph Reid met a small six-year-old girl from Dauan Island who stole her heart.

Late last year Bethany Fell-Mau wasn’t feeling well and had to be medivac’d to Thursday Island hospital before being flown urgently to the Townsville hospital.

Mother Annette Fell said her daughter had contracted meningococcal and meningitis – infections which can become extremely serious very quickly.

It was Boxing Day in 2022 that Annette and Bethany made their way down to Townsville from the Torres Strait and they were to stay at the Ronald McDonald House until the end of

Steph has signed with the Townsville Flames in the NBL1 North competition for the rest of 2023.

Spotify has announced the next iteration of its First Nations platform, Dreaming Loud.

First launched as a standalone playlist titled Blak Australia in 2017, Dreaming Loud is an evolving suite of playlists and programs that remains true to its original mission – amplifying the perspectives, stories, and music of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians with global audiences.

Adding to its suite of playlists that feature Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians, last month saw the launch of a new hip-hop playlist called Proppa Bars, a new mood playlist called Big Ancestor Energy and two new kid’s playlists: Too Deadly Bub for younger kids and Blak Hits for Kids, for slightly older kids.

Spotify Australia said these exciting additions were joined by new monthly Music + Talk show OUSS HITS, which sought to amplify the stories behind new music releases featured in its suite of First Nations playlists.

First northern girl’s team to try for AFL Cup PICS BY CHRISTINE HOWES For the first time in history, a junior girls team from further north than Cairns has competed in the AFL QSchools Cup in Cairns this week.

The team of 18 students from Years 7, 8 and 9 at Tagai and NPA state colleges will make the 2000km+ return trip down south to take on Cairns high schools in an AFL carnival.

AFL Cape York Development Officer Kieran Sciberras said it was ‘first contact’ for many of the girls.

“For a lot of students it will be their first full-contact AFL game on a full-size AFL oval,” he said.

“It will be great to see students put the skills they’ve learned at school to use into a more competitive environment.

“The team was selected based on behaviour, attendance and their effort shown

during in-school AFL sessions.”

The carnival kicked off at Cairns North on Tuesday, after arriving on Monday night for pizza and jersey presentations (pictured).

“We wouldn’t be able to offer opportunities like this for young people from the Far North without the help from our partners, so a massive thank you to AFL Queensland, Hinterland Aviation, Torres Strait Youth Recreation and Sporting Association, Bamaga Enterprises Ltd and CEQ for their support,” he said. “The playing kit worn by the girls was designed by AFL Cape York house for Girls resident and former NPA State College student Edna-Grey Muhammad from Seisia.

“Whilst down in Cairns, the team will visit AFL Cape York house for Girls for a tour and will be involved in team-building and leadership activities.”

CLASS ACTION ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE TORRES STRAIT ISLANDS

This is an important notice ordered by the Federal Court of Australia

What is this notice about?

Two Torres Strait Islander leaders have brought a legal case against the Australian Government on behalf of all Torres Strait Islanders. The case is about climate change and its effects on Torres Strait Islanders.

If you are a Torres Strait Islander, and believe you have suffered loss or damage as a result of the Australian Government not doing things to protect Torres Strait Islanders from the effects of climate change you are automatically part of the case. You can: 1. Stay in the case by doing nothing; or 2. Leave the case by sending a form called an opt-out form, or by emailing Phi Finney McDonald and telling them you want to opt out, by 4:00pm AEST on 26 May 2023.

You do not need to pay money to stay in the case.

Information about the case Uncle Pabai Pabai and Uncle Paul Kabai from Boigu and Saibai Islands in the Torres Strait have brought a legal case in the Federal Court against the Australian Government.

The case is about climate change and its effects on Torres Strait Islanders. The Australian Government is defending the case.

Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul's lawyers are a firm called Phi Finney McDonald. They are helping Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul to bring the case.

What do you need to do to be part of the case?

The case is called a “class action” because Uncle Pabai and Uncle Paul have brought the case on behalf of everyone who is Torres Strait Islander (by descent or by customary adoption) (Torres Strait Islander) and who believes they have suffered loss or damage as a result of the Australian Government not doing things to protect Torres Strait Islanders from the effects of climate change. In legal terms, everyone who meets this description is a “Group Member”.

If you meet the description, you are automatically a Group Member and you don’t need to do anything to be a part of the case.

What do you need to do if you don’t want to be part of the case?

If you don’t want to be part of the case, you need to tell the Federal Court. This is called ‘opting out’ of the case. There are two ways you can opt out: 1. Download the opt out form from www.climatecase.com.au, fill it out and post or email it to the Victorian Registry of the Federal Court at 305 William Street, Melbourne VIC 3000 or vicreg@fedcourt.gov.au.

2. Email Phi Finney McDonald on climateclassaction@phifinneymcdonald.com and say you want to opt out.

TORRES SHIRE COUNCIL To lead, provide & facilitate a sustainable, safe and culturally vibrant community

PUBLIC NOTICE ANIMAL MANAGEMENT – COMPLIANCE BLITZ Throughout Queensland, local governments are dealing with dog attacks or breaches of the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 (QLD) or local laws due to irresponsible pet and property owners.

All Queensland Councils have expressed their concerns regarding animal management. Laws may change in the event of serious injury or fatality due to dog attack in light if a recent death due to dogs attack of an Ergon meter reader in the Redland area and the injuring (requiring hospitalisation) of a number of young children due to dog attacks elsewhere in Queensland.

Therefore, Council seeks all dog owners and residents to carefully read this notice and comply with it.

This Public Notice is to advise the community of relevant details regarding animal management and that a compliance blitz will commence from Monday 8 May 2023.

Council has received and acted upon complaints about dogs wandering at large and dangerous dogs. Council has been very disappointed that dog owners are being so irresponsible by not ensuring that if their pet leaves their property, it is on a leash and under the control of a person who can control the animal as required by law in this Shire (and every Council for its Local Government Area (LGA) in Queensland).

Local Law No 2 expressly states at Section 14: A person who keeps an animal must maintain a proper enclosure to prevent the animal from wandering or escaping from the person’s land. Maximum penalty for subsection (1)—20 penalty units. (2) The local government may, by subordinate local law, prescribe requirements for a proper enclosure for an animal or species or breed of animal. (3) The owner of the animal must ensure that it is not wandering at large.

Council reminds the community that it is prohibited to keep any of the following breeds anywhere in the Shire (local government area): American pit bull terrier or pit bull terrier; dogo Argentino; fila Brasileiro; Japanese tosa; Perro de Presa Canario or Presa Canario.

It is prohibited to keep more than 2 dogs over the age of 12 weeks in any Multiple Dwelling Premises; to keep more than 2 dogs over the age of 12 weeks on an allotment with an area less than or equal to 600m2.

Council will continue to enforce the local laws that are publicly accessible on the Council website and have been accessible for the past 10 years.

Accordingly, Council is committed to keeping the community safe and making it possible for families, the elderly, young children, indeed everybody to move round the Shire without fear of injury or attack.

Council also wants to publicly acknowledge and thank responsible dog owners in the Shire.

Council has provided this Notice so that the community is aware that if there is/are any dog or groups of dogs off leash, they will be impounded and the dog owner (if known) will be notified and must pay a pound fee, sustenance fee, and if the dog is not registered, a registration fee. The dog owner (if known) will have 3 days to retrieve their

Additional requirements apply to keep a declared dangerous or menacing dog, including fencing and signage requirements.

Prior to making a declaration, Council will provide the registered owner with a proposed declaration notice, which gives the owner an opportunity to respond to the proposed declaration. The registered owner will have 14 days to make written representations in response to the declaration notice.

Destruction Orders The Local Law No 2 allows an authorised person to make a destruction order under certain circumstances, stating that Council intends to destroy an animal within 14 days after the order is served on the registered owner. The registered owner will have an opportunity to make a review application of the destruction order within the 14 day timeperiod. If there is no registered owner and the owner is unknown, Council will destroy the animal.

Kuiyam Pride reunion A spontaneous reunion between former Kuiyam Pride representatives happened at the NBL1 North game held in Townsville last Saturday night.

Darwin Salties players Deba George and Nate Jawai, and assistant coach, Michael Maclean, were a part of Kuiyam’s roster in 2002 – the first year the Indigenous team played in the Queensland Basketball League.

21 years ago, George and Jawai was

in the U23 Development Team and Maclean played in the men’s team.

They caught up with former inaugural Kuiyam Pride women’s coach, Velma Gara.

Torres News understands Kuiyam Pride only played a handful of seasons in the semi professional league before disbanding, but not before making a mark in the basketball world with George recruited to the National Basketball League club Cairns Taipans in 2004, and Jawai in 2007.

Organisers said the event was held annually to ‘kick off’ Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.

“Biggest and massive thank you to Jimmy O‘Cloudy and the President of TSYRSA Allan Filewood for their continued support in hosting this event, Wally Shibasaki and William McKeown in assisting in organising the refs and DV Prevention Month

march, and being the voice over the weekend and managing the Battles Official Tent,” they said.

They said sponsors included CEQ, VITI Painting, TI Motel, Strait Fitness, The Coffee Department and Mrs Ethel Millett with children and grandchildren.

“Last but not least, a massive thank you to all teams with their sponsors and families that have participated in this year’s carnival,” they said.

“Without youpla, this event wouldn’t have been possible or successful.

“We look forward to seeing you all again at our next Battle Of The Islands Touch Championship Carnival.”

Close game for Cutters

BY ALF WILSON CLASSY back Jasmine Peters and rampaging forward Lyrech Mara shone for the Mackay Cutters, who lost Saturday’s top of the table clash 28-26 to Souths Logan Magpies in Townsville last weekend.

Cutters lost no admirers before a large crowd in round seven of the BMD Ladies Statewide premiership, in a game that could have went either way.

The 21-year-old Lyrech told the Torres News there was not much between the teams.

“We were down on the scoreboard then fought back and hit the lead at one stage before they got in front late,” she said.

“It was a tough game and I feel we can beat them next time.”

Lyrech started the game, playing 16 minutes in the first half and about 20 in the second half.

Two other Torres Strait girls, second row forward Sareka Mooka and halfback Tahlulah Tillet, also were in good form.

“Sareka made lots of post contact

metres and ran straight and hard and Tahlulah always goes well,” Lyrech said.

She said the side had a lot of support from family and friends at the Jack Manski Oval.

“I had uncles, aunties, nan, sisters and others there and the support was great,” she said.

Cutters coach Marco Peters described the game in Townsville as “a real good ding dong battle all the way through”.

“It was a pretty of good game of footy to watch and I was impressed with how prop Lyrech Mara and fullback Jasmine Peters performed,” he said.

MEN’S HOSTPLUS CUP In round seven of the men’s Hostplus Queensland Cup competition the PNG Hunters defeated the Mackay Cutters 18-10 at Port Moresby.

At Townsville the Souths Logan Magpies belted the Townsville Blackhawks 30-4 in a five try and one performance.

Cairns based Northern Pride lost 48-nil to Norths Devils in the match at Brisbane’s Bishop Park.

Foley Shield lands for Cairns

BY ALF WILSON A master class performance by former NRL Dally M Medal winner Ben Barba enabled Cairns to break a 15-year drought and win the Foley Shield competition after they beat arch rivals Townsville 38-18 in Monday’s decider at Barlow Park last weekend.

Cairns, Townsville and Mackay battled it out over three days in both men and women’s division in the prestigious rugby league comp, which started in 1948 with six teams.

It has been a long time between drinks for Cairns, who last won the Foley Shield in 2008.

The 33-year-old Barba played 168 NRL games between 2008 and 16 for the Canterbury Bulldogs, Brisbane Broncos and Cronulla Sharks.

Townsville scored three quick tries in the first half to lead 18-6 with the second coming after a

clever 40/20 from the boot of star back Shaun Nona.

Just before halftime, Bradley Stephen who played with Erub United in their excellent carnivals wins this year, scored a try.

Townsville led 18-10 at halftime.

However in the second half Cairns dominated, scoring four tries in the first 20 minutes to put scoreboard pressure on Townsville.

Barba mesmerized the Townsville defence scoring two tries, one in each half.

Cairns’ forward Aidan Day was named player of the series.

At the completion of the games Cairns led the points table with four points followed by Townsville on two and Mackay zero.

TOWNSVILLE WINS WOMEN’S In the earlier game Townsville took out the women’s competition with a 24-10 victory over Cairns on Monday.

The Townsville ladies had beaten Mackay 28-14 a day earlier and after three days led the points table with four to take out the champion team title.

Mackay finished with two points and Cairns on zero.

Townsville coach Rothana Baira has played at numerous carnivals on Waiben and said she was delighted with the win.

Round 5 produces mixed results for travelling NBL1 teams

BY VELMA GARA Chris Cedar’s South West Metro Pirates hit the road last weekend and won both their games in Round 5 of the NBL1 North competition.

Firstly, against Rockhampton (99 to 64) and Mackay (97 to 87), which gave the Meteors their first defeat.

Cedar came off the bench for totals of 12 points 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals over the weekend.

Alana Fraser’s Pirates team split the road trip with a win against Rockhampton in a low scoring game, 51 to 48, but a loss the following night against Mackay – 55 to 71.

Also tripping away were the Darwin Salties mens team, who had a loss against Cairns Marlins, 90 to 73, but dug deep to defeat the Townsville Heat, 91 to 86.

The Salties were without centre Nate Jawai, although he travelled to support his teammates. Guard, Deba George, started in both games and had a

great shooting night in Townsville.

In other games, Deshawn Ross-Paiwan’s Northside Wizards had a one point win against the USC Rip City, 92 to 91.

The game was won with less then 10 seconds remaining as Wizards’ Andrew White made a fade away shot.

On the ladder for the men’s competition – Ipswich are still undefeated.

TJ Diop’s Gold Coast are 4th, Northside are 5th and Darwin are 7th.

Shaneice Swain, Teyahna Bond and LJ Williams, collectively,

Flames were looking to continue their good form from last weekend’s triumphant three game road trip but turnovers late in the fourth quarter may have cost them the game.

The women’s competition ladder shows Northside Wizards and Darwin Salties undefeated and sitting in 1st and 2nd respectively. Fraser’s South West Metro are 4th, Cairns 9th and Townsville 12th.

Brisbane Capitals won against Sunshine Coast, 97 to 65, and she had 20p 2r 4a 3s.

Her team is sitting at 3rd position on the ladder.

A great match should be played this Saturday night between Darwin and the Capitals.

Both teams are in excellent form.

Another game to watch will be South West Metro hosting the Ipswich Force.

Southern District Spartans are on a road trip to play Townsville tomorrow night and then Cairns on Saturday night.

RISE rugby league camp draws wide support STORY ALF WILSON More than 70 new match officials can officiate junior rugby league games as a result of a RISE rugby league camp held on Waiben late last month.

Twelve of them will

become RISE coaches themselves once they complete their online modules.

They were: Ella-Faye Hosea-Peters, Lavinia Mabo, Samson Zitha, Sam Joe, Mopwalle Mabo, Thomas Dunsmore, Michael Loban, Kiwat Abednego,

Anthony David, Roy Auda, Luke Doxanakis and Aaron Guligo.

The weekend was a great success with a huge turnout from the local community.

Many young rising stars of the future participated in the event, which ensured

continued strong Torres Strait senior men’s and women’s sides in the future.

An Australian Government initiative, the RISE program provided aspirational rugby league players and coaches elite training and education through

a holistic rugby league development approach.

Unlike the mainland program, delivered over several weeks, the Waiben program was offered as a focussed weekend ‘camp’ for participants, led by former Queensland Maroons, Canberra

Raiders and Cowboys coach Neil Henry.

QRL official Koko Quirke, who did all the Life fit sessions with the kids, which were infield activities around Social and Emotional Wellbeing, teaching the kids concepts such as gratitude, respect, intent, pride, trust and resilience.

Caitlin Knox did sessions around strength and conditioning, which allowed the participants to learn about warm

up, warm down, recovery, how to do weights, dowel and band stretching.

Denise Weir delivered a Foundation 1 Referee course, with kids doing theory and then on field practice of being a referee.

Everyone got to practice what they learned on Sunday afternoon with some scratch-match practice games.

Perhaps some future NRL players were there.

Wongai tries for FNQ comp spot STORY AND PICS CHRISTINE HOWES Wongai Rugby Football Club “put in a good first half show” against Cairns Thunder on Saturday night in Cairns.

Coach Belford Lui said they had definitely highlighted their case to be included in the Cairns Rugby competition in the future.

He said the game was an invitational for all Torres Strait players, some of whom had travelled from Townsville and beyond to join the team.

“We’d only got together two or three days ago, but I think we gave a good account of ourselves,” he said.

“In the first half we held Cairns to only a lead of two tries.

“In the second half, I knew we’d get gassed, and we didn’t have that many reserves, so we just dropped off.”

He said standouts for the team included Torres Strait-based Laurie Elisala, and Cairns-based David Lui and Naiama Mau. “Really have to give a big shout out to the boys from Dauan,” he said.

“Torenzo, and boys who made the trip down, big thank you, awesome effort.

his first time in a rugby Union scrum, which was a great effort, especially at short notice.

“It was a great turnout for us to build interest for our cause to get a team in the Cairns competition.

“I’m glad the boys had a dig.”

He said they hoped to host a re-match later in the

year on Waiben.

“We’re trying to do is grow the sports throughout the North Queensland, and actually we’re in the process of getting help to put a team, if possible, into the FNQ competition,” he said.

“And that will involve us travelling from the Torres Straits and the Cape and outlying areas to Cairns every weekend, possibly for a whole season, which is close to 16 weeks.

“So I’m basing this on something similar that happened with Tiwi Islands going into the NT AFL Aussie Rules, they did it.”

He said he was grateful for all the support they had.

“A big thank you to all the boys and the staff and others who just turned up and helped out on the night,” he said.

“It’s hard enough organising something here in Cairns, it’s 10 times harder to organise it away from Thursday Island.

“It’s not as easy as just you’re travelling down the road for a game of footy, boys have got to catch helicopters or you get dinghies from one island to another.”
