A Women’s Week to remember Women of all ages, from all over the Torres Strait, have celebrated Queensland Women’s Week and International Women’s Day with love, laughter and style over the past week, with more to come.

Empowerment was the main theme in a series of workshops and events, some of which are bound to be talked about for many years to come.

A three-day workshop hosted by the Torres Strait Island Regional Council on Warraber was attended by at least two women from every Ailan community.

Royston showed his vulnerable side performing I Won’t Let You Go by James Morrison, a song he sang at his mother’s funeral.

After receiving a standing ovation, all judges applauded Royston for showing a raw and vulnerable side to his artistry.

There was not a dry eye in the house when Ricki-Lee also revealed that Royston’s brother Richard had flown

down for the show, surprising him in the audience.

Sunday night on Australian Idol: it’s make or break as the Top 8 give it everything they have to prove to the nation along with judges Harry Connick Jr, Meghan Trainor, Kyle Sandilands and Amy Shark why they deserve the title of Australia’s next Idol.

Shadow Minister for Northern Australia, Senator Susan McDonald (pictured), has called on State and Federal Labor Governments to outline how – and how quickly – they plan to address reports of foreignowned fishing vessels raiding Torres Strait waters for seafood and crowding out local fishers.

She said Torres Strait fishermen have said foreign vessels were exceeding catch limits and crowding out the local operators.

They said as many as 80 Chinese-sponsored commercial boats from PNG have been raiding the area, taking crayfish and sea cucumber, as well as protected dugong and turtles.

She said there were also reports of an increase in illegal vessels from Indonesia fishing Australia’s northern waters with impunity.

Senator McDonald said the situation made a mockery of the government’s approach to northern border security.

“Authorities have acknowledged the Indigenous fishermen’s

concerns and said patrols would be stepped up, but there needs to be more urgency shown and a clear picture provided, so we have confidence something will be done,” she said.

Senator McDonald said increased foreign activity in the Strait raised questions about biosecurity and overfishing.

“Tuberculosis is a big concern for humans, and lumpy skin disease hitting cattle here from Indonesia would devastate our northern beef sector,” she said.

“And while Australian fishers operate under strict quotas and increasing regulation, it is appalling that foreign vessels can just take what they want.

“Queensland and Federal Labor must do more to protect and support the North.”

Health authorities are managing clusters of influenza cases across Cape York Peninsula, prompting a warning for residents to take precautions to avoid falling ill.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Public Health Medical Officer Dr Allison Hempenstall said 63 laboratory-confirmed cases had already been recorded so far this year.

“We know flu has started circulating in our region,’’ she said. “Being vaccinated every year is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu – once this year’s seasonal flu vaccine becomes available from April onwards, everyone should take the opportunity to be vaccinated.

“If you get the flu, you should stay home and rest and drink plenty of fluids until symptoms have resolved, which is usually five to seven days.

“If you or your family member is getting sicker, they may have fast or difficult breathing, have chest pains, be sleepy or say they are getting worse.

“If this happens, they should go to their doctor or clinic, as you may be suitable to receive antiviral treatment.’’

Dr Hempenstall said the flu could be a serious illness, especially for high-risk people like young children, old people, pregnant women, and people with illnesses such as diabetes.

“While healthy adults usually recover quite well, influenza infection can lead to other medical complications such as pneumonia,’’ she said.

Hundreds came out last Sunday for the inaugural blessing of marine monuments and a memorial church service for the SS Quetta and Cyclone Mahina disaster at Bathurst Bay, Cape Melville.

disaster, which happened in 1899, remains one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded Australian history.

The sinking of the SS Quetta in 1890 was one of Queensland’s biggest maritime operations.

Together, these two historically significant

disasters transformed shipping and maritime operations in the Torres Strait and Australia.

Church-goers enjoyed a blessing and church service followed by a light lunch and traditional feast in the evening at the Anglican Hall.

M Continued from P1 In officially signing the Charter of the TS&NPAROC, the Mayors expressed their enthusiasm for what they said would be a strong collaboration.

They said it would lead to better to shared resources, enhanced service delivery, regional deployment of staff on projects and effective management of projects with other levels of government – all the things Mayors and Councillors have been calling for over many years on behalf of Torres Strait Islander people to support our communities.

NPARC Mayor Patricia Yusia said it was a great opportunity.

“We know that this will provide an opportunity and an avenue for us to be more effective in serving our communities,” she said.

“And in advancing the aspirations of all people in the Torres Strait and NPA region, in controlling our own affairs and in growing the wealth of our economies, and strengthening Ailan Kastom and Aboriginal Traditions of the region.”

TSC Mayor Yen Loban said it was what was needed.

“This is exactly what the region needs,” he said. “Recognition of our geographically and demographically unique location, being the most remote region of Australia, and the only to share an International Border.

“Our region faces challenges delivering services to 24 discrete communities.”

TSIRC Mayor Phillemon Mosby said he was excited.

“I’m excited that following years of discussions, we supported the development of the Masig Statement, Malungu Yangu Wakay and signed on 23 August 2022 commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the First Torres Strait Island Councillors Conference – and now have our own ROC with the opportunities that provides for our region,” he said.

Collectively the TS&NPAROC represents the interests of residents of all 24 communities across the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area.

Leading up to the launch, each local government resolved to endorse the charter for the TS&NPAROC and to allocate initial resources for incorporation and to set strategic direction.

The TS&NPAROC will undertake research and advocacy on key regional issues to State and Federal governments, bring about regional tendering and purchase agreements to achieve economies of scale and better synergies in service delivery through better management of projects, and facilitate cooperative projects between the constituent local governments through shared services and joint Local Government activities.

Local stores commit to caring vision, mission and goals

Not-for-profit remote store operator Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ) has launched new Vision, Mission and Goals, which focus on working closely with the Indigenous communities it services across North Queensland to create a better future for the next generation.

The organisation’s new Vision of Caring, Every Day, Always sets a clear direction for CEQ to reinforce its commitment to be an employer of choice and help communities in the Torres Strait, Cape York and on Palm Island meet their aspirations for a healthier and sustainable future.

CEQ Chief Executive Officer Michael Dykes said the words in an organisation’s Vision statement were important.

“Our Vision of Caring, Every Day, Always sets out our intentions

on how our business will behave every day,” he said.

“Our new Vision statement will influence all aspects of our organisation’s culture, from who we recruit to join the team to how we serve our customers.

“CEQ’s intention is to care about all aspects within its influence, every day and always, and we want others to hold us accountable to that.”

Mr Dykes said CEQ’s new Vision statement was already guiding changes in the organisation.

“We’ve been providing business support to small community-based businesses to help them through some challenges,” he said.

“Our direct support of community events has also doubled, while we have even provided replacement household items for a community member whose home

was destroyed by fire.”

To support its new Vision, CEQ has also updated their Mission and Goals.

Mr Dykes said the launch of the organisation’s new strategic direction was an important milestone and the beginning of a new chapter for CEQ, coinciding with the appointment of new Board members and his own CEO appointment last year.

“We’re not just about putting products on the shelf to maximise sales,” he said.

“There’s a responsibility at CEQ that’s over and above profit.

“Our Board has been very clear about the importance of our role in supporting community aspirations to be healthy and sustainable into the future.

“CEQ is an important employer in local Indigenous communities,

and can play a key role in supporting the community to make healthy choices, creating jobs and developing sustainable enterprise.

“This will be our way of showing that we will care, every day, always.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) hosted the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area Regional Healthy Communities Forum 2023, highlighting the region’s health and wellbeing priorities in Cairns late last month.

Community representatives, Elders, regional leaders, health industry experts and stakeholders attended the three-day forum focused on preventative health and the patient journey.

TSRA Acting Chairperson and Member for Badhu, Horace Baira, opened the forum and said

they hoped to continue to work together.

“The passion, input and perspectives shared across the three days included recommendations and outcomes set to inform the TSRA’s future investment,” Mr Baira said.

“The forum has helped identify how the TSRA can strengthen partnerships across government and community-controlled health care sectors to better help our people.”

Forum participants workshopped key challenges and opportunities to collectively put forward a number of priorities for

the TSRA to consider and action.

“A key element echoed throughout the forum was the need for service providers, policy-makers and government to work together, not separately,” Mr Baira said.

“Moving forward, the TSRA will continue advocating for a collaborative and community-led approach to improve health outcomes in our region.”

The TSRA extended its gratitude to all forum participants and contributors.

Planning for the Townsville event has been ongoing for months and several meetings have been held amongst volunteers.

“We are very thankful for the support from Townsville City Council and these celebrations are for people of all ages,” Ms Cowley said.

Ms Cowley will also be travelling to Waiben for their celebrations on 16 and 17 March and will take with her some banners.

The Chief of the Australian Army, Lieutenant General Simon Stuart, AO, DSC, will attend the Waiben celebrations.

Women of all ages from Saibai, Mabuiag, Badu, Kubin, St Paul’s, Iama, Hammond, Warraber, Masig, Erub and Mer came together for an Empowered Women, Empower Women workshop on Warraber last week.

“The workshop was aimed at empowering women to believe in themselves,” Torres Strait Island Regional Council Health & Wellbeing Manager Ella Kris said.

“I personally believe that women who are empowered will empower others,” she said.

“The workshop included a session on First5Forever, climate change and a smaller session on developing an TSIRC Domestic and Family Violence Action Plan.”

She said over the course of the three-day event, “we witnessed women being empowered to stand up and speak with confidence”.

Participant Lala Gutchen said it was a “wow” experience for her.

“It was really eye-opening, like overwhelming,” she said.

“Lots of different women from different places that have that same mindset of leadership that they want to develop.

“They already have it developing them, but have a workshop like that, really lifted them up to keep on going and people sharing different ideas – it was really like wow.”

The workshop included public speaking, sharing of beliefs, fashion show, calypso band and crafting.

Speakers included WomanSpeak’s Chantal Roelofs and First5Forever’s Jaqui Ruhl.

“These women are the protectors and sharers of cultural knowledge and cultural ways – very unique in this part of the world,” Chantal said.

“These women are weavers, fishers, makers of cultural culinary dishes, story-tellers and the holders of vision of the futures of these islands.

“To witness these women dive into WomanSpeak practices was something to behold – speaking their deep truths and deeply held beliefs.

“The power of these women on the room – whoaaaaa – the Elders and young ones alike.”

Lala said they had learned from their experience.

“We learned about all sorts of things that really help us, especially if you’re doing public speaking,” she said.

“For me, I do a lot of public speaking with the language work that I’m doing in my community.

“So I’m showing leadership as a woman with trying to revive the language and attending forums and other workshops around the region.

“It helped give me tools to stand in front of a lot of people and talk, and I got to share my experience of doing climate action work in Torres Strait.”

She said she was sure more women would step up as a result of their experience.

“More women can be a gamechanger in their region,” she said.

“They thought about stepping up and be leaders one day in their community.

“As a young woman, I do a lot of leadership work and that really helped me to feel I was in a safe area where I could speak up in front of women, especially when you’re in a male dominant area, sometimes you don’t have the courage to speak up.

“But then this kind of workshop reminded us that we are special and we have rights, we can stand up and talk.”

Lala said she was keen to use what she had learned.

“For me as a young woman, I want to use more of the tools and better myself and hopefully be a leader one day,” she said.

“I never thought about going outside of that leadership, but if time comes, and it calls me to do that, then I’ll go take that stand because I know I can do it, yes.”

Chantal said they had seen some amazing results.

“By the end of the time together, every woman was getting up, speaking confidently and clearly and from their heart,” she said.

“I look forward to seeing how these women take this work forward and empower other women.

“To all women across the Torres Strait – find out which women came along to our time on Warraber, seek them out, have a cup of tea and have a yarn.

“This workshop was all about empowered women, empowering women, so these women who came to Warraber, they are empowered with a lot of good information, new skill and technique, and they’re the women that will pass on this knowledge and these techniques to you.”

The workshop saw women representative from across the region work participate in activities and speak openly and honestly about their lived experiences.

It was a fantastic couple of days.

In the evening I was invited to speak to the ladies about our council support for women in leadership, which I think is absolutely critical. Council plays an important role to build community capabilities and capacity.

Understanding the dynamics of the social norms in community and giving a place for women to

not only participate, engage, but to also be actively supporting each other, seeing and recognising leaders among their own selves in their own social groups.

A lot of ladies came out of their shells, they felt empowered.

It was great to fund and facilitate an event that brought women together to not only share their stories but recognise that there was a lot of similarities and common interests and aspirations for the place of women in today’s society, whether that’s politically, culturally, spiritually or economically.

A lot of ladies broke their silence and felt comfortable and supported to be able to express and share their story.

Our Council was proud to support this fantastic event.

A Women’s Week to remember

BY ALF WILSON Badu Ipi-Kazil organised a muchappreciated and fantastic three-day Women’s Week and International Women’s Day event earlier this week on Badhu.

The theme for the Women’s Week event was, Empower Her Voice, Secure Her Future, which celebrated present, future and achievements of our women and girls, group spokeswoman Marie Ah-Wang said.

“We are celebrating our diverse community

by shining the spotlight on some of them,” she said.

“We have asked the women on how they choose to challenge themselves to create a great future?

“To this, it was showcased at the event, acknowledging their achievements.”

The theme for the International Women Day event, held on Tuesday, was Crack the Code, highlighting leaders and changemakers who were redefining innovation, creating new social, economic and cultural

codes for gender equal future.

“The purpose of this project is to highlight women in business and gender equality,” Marie said.

“Women in particular have different sets of life, work experiences and perspective.

“This event is a great way to bring everyone together and making Badhu a nicer place to live in.

“The idea is to bring in like-minded people through shared passion and interest – It’s Time for A Change [is] a great way of promoting and showcasing our culture

and tradition,” she said.

She said the outcome would be a direct and indirect impact of bringing the community together, helping to build community spirt and raising awareness of community issues.

“It will provide opportunities for participation, skills developments, volunteering and has a political and environmental impact,” she said.

“It will give a healthy boost for their self-confidence, selfesteem and a best way to improve our community and make it stronger.”

Celebrating strong women, strong workforce, strong communities The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) is celebrating inspiring women in its workforce as part of International Women’s Day and beyond.

TSRA Acting Chairperson Horace Baira said the TSRA encouraged more women from across the region to consider opportunities including Board, middle and senior management positions, ranger roles, leadership programs and scholarships.

“Women carry knowledge and continue to lift our families, workplaces and communities,” Mr Baira said.

“The TSRA Board currently has the strongest level of female representation since the TSRA was established in 1994.

“Our Board includes six female members, up from three in the previous term and we know there’s always more we can do to increase diversity.”

TSRA Chief Executive Officer Vonda Malone oversees the operations for one of the most remote Australian Public Service agencies and the lead Commonwealth agency in the Torres Strait.

Previously, she was the first female Mayor of Torres Shire Council.

This month Ms Malone presented at the 3rd Regional Conference for Pacific Women in Maritime, jointly hosted in Cairns by the Australian Government in partnership with the Pacific Community (SPC) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

“We voiced challenges, opportunities and our shared optimism for more women to progress and succeed on their journeys in

“We are proud to invest in girls and women across the region to support strong communities.”

Women make up more than half of TSRA’s workforce, including eight female rangers.

As part of Working on Country plans, all TSRA Rangers – men and women – carry out important work including turtle and dugong monitoring, Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) recording, weed removal, surveillance, beach clean-ups and more.

Sene makes NSW finalist for 2023 Miss Universe Australia

BY RHIANNA PATRICK, WITH THANKS TO THE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS RADIO SERVICE. PIC SUPPLIED. A Torres Strait Islander entrant in the Miss Universe Australia competition has made it through to the next stage of the competition.

Sydney-based model Sene Maluwapi (pictured right) will be vying for a spot at the national title later this year.

The proud Malu Kiwai woman of the Samu and Gaidai clans started modelling as a 14 year old in Adelaide and since being signed to Chic Management (Brisbane) and Chadwick Models (Sydney) has become a regular on Australian runways, best known for her striking ‘Afro’ hair.

Ms Maluwapi said getting into the industry was a way for her to push representation of Torres Strait Islanders and the Papuan community into a space they were rarely seen.

“This was a big thing for me and it was a big decision,” she said.

“But given our islands at the moment are currently in danger due to climate change, it really just gave me this extra urge to apply this year, and really put us out there, and get people recognising, and seeing us, and also supporting us, and standing in solidarity with other First Nations of Australia.”

The 19 year old said she had been approached a number of times to apply for the competition but it never felt like the right time.

“I felt like it was a calling, honestly,” she said. “I was just like, ‘yeah’.

“I felt like I had the strength for it, and the voice, and the mana – my people behind me, and so I was like, ‘you know what? I can do this’.

“Honestly, I’ve gone into it with a mindset like, ‘I’m going in this to win up for my community’, and that’s that.”

March to October will be a busy seven months for Ms Maluwapi behind the scenes of the Miss Universe Australia competition, which means a lot of workshops and events with the other New South Wales finalists.

She said she had a lot to learn about pageants

and ‘meetings with brands’.

“There’s going to be a lot of training,” she said.

“What they have given me with that, to get to the nationals, I need to put my all in it, not hold back, be 100 per cent me.

“There’s going to be a lot of things, I know that they’ll talk about how we speak, and we’ll be judged on that.

“We’ll be judged on the way we walk, even our manners, like everything.

“It is a lot of pressure, and it is a huge title to hold, even just being a state finalist, which I’m just overwhelmed with excitement.”

Since being signed, Ms Maluwapi has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar and been lucky to walk some of this country’s biggest runway shows.

In 2021, as part of the Brisbane Festival, she walked in First Nations Fashion + Design’s Walking in Two Worlds show and last year she debuted in Australian Fashion week – walking for Indigenous Fashion Projects x David Jones and First Nations Fashion + Design’s closing show.

Around her work and other finalist commitments, Ms Maluwapi also has fundraising requirements she needs to complete.

“Part of the Miss Universe Australia program is that each finalist fundraises for Toybox Australia,” she said.

“Toybox Australia has been the official charity partner for Miss Universe since 2019.

“They are a children’s charity dedicated to raising funds to assist local, sick, and disadvantaged children nationwide. My mark is $5000 dollars.

“I think it’s a beautiful charity that we are putting our time and efforts into fundraising for because obviously they’re helping those in need, especially piccaninnies and families, which is so important.”

While Ms Maluwapi was part of a growing cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander models in the pages of Australian fashion magazines and on runways, she said she

I started modelling, I do what I do for my community, and so our future piccaninnies don’t grow up feeling like they have to settle for less, or that they can’t go into certain spaces because they haven’t seen themselves represented there.

“I’m just so excited, and I can’t wait for other little piccaninnies to see this, no matter how far I go in the comp.

“Just to see that they can do it, even if they feel like they can’t,

was often reminded how important being visible is for her community.

“I’m filled with so much pride and power because all the time I get messages from smol girls, Aunties back home, sending me photos of babies with their Afros out saying, they saw a photo of you on the runway, they’re freaking out,” she said.

“They said they’re going to do this when they’re older.

“Honestly, it’s like I’ve always said since

“That’s us seeing ourselves represented in someone else, and when they’re doing something, it makes us believe we can do that.

“It’s pretty incredible and I’m so, so proud to be representing my community.”

NPA artists meet to plan ahead Northern Peninsula Area Art Centre held a meeting last weekend to plan for the year.

Artists, teachers, dancers, council and traditional owners and elders were there to hear about where the art centre had come from, and where it was going manager Dev Lengjel said.

“I outlined my approach to art centre business,” he said.

“I presented some ideas for a drone workshop, and a possible mini arts festival, and we are discussing a visit of the NSW doctors orchestra to work with school and to present a concert at the at centre.

“We also introduced the workshop that is coming up with a view of producing merchandise for the upcoming tourist season.

“It was a successful meeting.”

Regional Development Australia Tropical North in collaboration with Cook Shire council is the RASN Provider for Far North QLD Region.

The Healing Foundation Board are feeling reenergised and hopeful for the year ahead after visiting Zendath Kes last week, chair Professor Steve Larkin says.

The Healing Foundation is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation that partners with communities to address the ongoing trauma caused by actions like the forced removal of children from their families.

Professor Larkin expressed the Board’s, “deepest gratitude” to the community for their hospitality and conversations about healing.

“The Healing Foundation Board were pleased to visit Zenadth Kes, to reconnect with leaders on our work together for collective healing,” he said.

“A special thanks to Board Director,

Ivy Trevallion for hosting the Board on Waiben.

“The Board were very lucky to spend some learning about the pearling history in the region.

“We also had a fantastic dinner with community leaders with cultural inclusions of dance (the Island Stars troupe) and kaikai.”

“It was a joy to see the young ones carrying on culture with strength.

He said they were excited to continue their partnership with Mura Kosker Sorority and all the communities. “[They] have made known their healing priorities and expect a response,” he said.

“We won’t stop work until we’ve had full commitment from service providers and policy makers about meeting healing needs.”

Dance production a call to arms for Treaty: SILENCE set to go on national tour In a well-timed call to arms for Treaty, Queensland’s First Nations performing arts company, Karul Projects will commence an Australian tour this month delivering a powerful narrative in its original, compelling, and theatrical contemporary dance production, SILENCE. Following a sell-out world premiere season in 2020 at Brisbane Festival and last year’s tour of regional Queensland, Karul Projects, with producer BlakDance has assembled an all First Nations cast of SILENCE, which includes Benjin Maza.

BlakDance Executive Producer Merindah Donnelly said SILENCE was a searing commentary on Australian Nationhood.

“BlakDance is a self-determined First Nations producing house so it’s fitting the first work we tour is adding to the conversation about recognising our Sovereignty,” she said.

SILENCE is an hour-long performance that encompasses dramatic and visual storytelling replete with dialogue, humour, and rhythmic percussion – all the elements of which add up to a transformative stage experience choreographed and written by Karul Projects’ co-founder and director, Minjungbal-Yugambeh, Wiradjuri and Ni-Vanuatu man, Thomas E.S. Kelly.

Thomas said SILENCE was a seminal, First Nations Australian work developed on rich and raw grounds with the light and shade of visual storytelling in dance, dialogue, and percussion.

“Abounding in our struggle for Land Back and Treaty, SILENCE breaks the silence both literally and symbolically using dynamic live percussion from composer Jhindu-Pedro Lawrie whose rich drumbeats drive the dancers in their exploration of past, present, alternate realities and dreamscapes of Country, the milky way and Murun, the emu in the sky,” Mr Kelly said.

“SILENCE interprets what a 250 plus year-long denial of meaningful listening to First Nations people has done to the psyche of the people and land.

“Brown feet kick up sand, earth, dirt, and dust.

“The sand seeps through brown fingers as it always has.

“Always was, always will be.”

It was so great for ex-serviceman Villington Abiu Lui when some of his retired ex-navy buddies came along to help him celebrate his 69th birthday last Saturday at the Cairns Returned and Services League club with his family – he had a wonderful time.

Following the line of his forbearers in military service, Abiu enlisted with

the Royal Australian Navy as a junior recruit in 1970 at Thursday Island when he finished school.

He progressed through the ranks to Able Seaman on different naval ships and retired a Petty Officer after 25 years of service, including a stint during the Vietnam conflict on the ship HMAS Stalwart.

A big thank you to his beautiful niece Dr Leah Chivizhe (nee Lui), who effortlessly planned the celebration from Sydney NSW where she lives.

BY ALF WILSON William Mabo (pictured), who is a grandson of the late and great Eddie and Bonita Mabo, played the didgeridoo when the Queensland Reds Rugby Union team was welcomed to Townsville late last month.

It was as the Reds prepared for their Super Rugby Pacific season round one clash against the Hurricanes, played out in front of a crowd of more than 7000 at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium on the Saturday following.

The Hurricanes defeated the Reds, 47-13.

“It was really moving playing my didgeridoo for the Reds players and officials,” William said.

welcomed them to country on behalf of the Wulgurukaba First Nations People beside the Rydges Pool.

William was an integral part of the smoking ceremony and Wulgurukaba Walkabouts dancers which performed for the visitors.

“It was a very enjoyable,” William said.

Quietly spoken

William is a one of the most sought after didgeridoo players in the region and is often seen at major events such as NAIDOC and Survival Day. William and his partner Jessica are the proud parents of triplets Thinley (to be known as Theo), Henrietta and Abigail Mabo-Brown, who will turn four this September.

Playing for the Torres Strait STORY & PICS BY ALF WILSON Talented entertainer Guy Enosa is showcasing Torres Strait culture as he busks with his trusty guitar in Cairns.

The 56-year-old Mr Enosa was happily strumming his guitar on Abbott Street in the Cairns CBD when the Torres News saw him last Friday.

It was on the footpath outside busy shops, and many of the interested listeners were from two cruise ships which had moored at the nearby jetty.

“A lot of people know me, I also busk on Lake Street, and at Kuranda, Port Douglas and have also been to Melbourne,” Mr Enosa said.

Born on Waiben, Mr Enosa said he had been in Cairns for 20 years and loved watching people enjoy his music.

“My favorites are the dancing songs which the Mabuiag Islanders love,” he said.

“But I also enjoy Bob Marley, Lucky Dube and Kenny Rogers tunes.”

He said he met people from many different cultures and was able to tell them about his.

He said his favourite song was The Gambler by Kenny Rogers.

“But I believe in God and gambling is a sin and I encourage people to save their money,” he said.

Cairns fans into NRL STORY AND PICS

BY ALF WILSON Torres Strait Islander rugby league fans often gather at the Raintrees Tavern in the Cairns suburb of Manunda, where they barrack for a variety of NRL teams.

They were out in force last weekend for round one.

Super friendly and courteous worker in the Sports Bar, Jye Close, said said their Torres Strait Islander patrons were the majority of their footy fans and followed many teams.

“Some barrack for the Cowboys, others for the Parramatta Eels,

the premiers Penrith Panthers, Brisbane Broncos, Melbourne Storm and West Tigers,” he said.

The Torres News visited the popular establishment last Saturday to watch the Cowboys versus Canberra Raiders game and the South Sydney Rabbitohs against the Cronulla Sharks.

Several visitors from Bamaga were there cheering for the Cowboys who won the match 19-18.

The Sharks then lined up at home against the Rabbitohs.

Doyle Passi, an avid Cronulla Sharks fan, was excited when the team from Sutherland

Doyle Passi & Kane Namnie who follows the Penrith Panthers.

Shire took the lead.

Mr Passi has many relatives on Mer and other islands, and in Cairns and Townsville.

“I have barracked for the Sharks for a long time and love them,” he said.

The Sharks ended up losing the hard fought encounter by 27-18.

Even though the Sharks went down Mr Passi expected the side to string together many wins in coming weeks after they finished second on the ladder in 2022.

Kane Namnie said he was a big Penrith Panthers follower.

“I think the Panthers can go on and win their third premiership in a row,” he said.

NRL 2023: Cotter, Tabuai-Fidow, Lee, Kris & Mam

Torres Strait Islanders Reuben Cotter, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Brenko Lee, Sebastian Kris and Ezra Mam were all outstanding in their games at last weekend’s opening round of NRL fixtures.

Blockbusting Cowboys forward Reuben ran for more than 150 metres in the Cowboys 19-18

win over the Canberra Raiders in Saturday’s match at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

In addition to his many metres gained up the centre of the ruck, which was the second most by any player in round one, he made four tackle breaks and 35 tackles in 67 minutes on the field.

Sebastian lined up at fullback for the Raiders, where he ran the ball

strongly and defended well.

Proud of his heritage, Sebastian was delighted to see a big contingent of family and supporters from the Torres Strait there.

He was sent for a head injury assessment for the mandatory 15 minutes despite getting treatment on a leg complaint – a decision Canberra coach Ricky Stuart was critical of.

also shone for NRL debutants the Dolphins who scored one of the biggest upsets in NRL history to beat the quality Roosters side 28-18.

The Roosters were one of the early favourtites to win the premiership as red hot $1.10 favourites, whilst the Dolphins were $7 outsiders in a two-horse race.

TSIRC Saibai Cr Conwell Tabuai said the community was proud of Hamiso’s game and achievements.

“To be the first try scorer for the new club coming into the NRL, he made me so proud and our Tabuai family and the community of

Torres Strait,” Cr Tabuai said.

Playing at five eighth rising star Ezra had a great game in the Broncos upset 13-12 win over the premiers of the past two season the Penrith Panthers.

A highlight of NRL round two will be the mouth watering clash between the Cowboys and Broncos on Friday night at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium starting at 7pm.

These games have been traditionally close and this encounter will pit Reuben against Ezra.

On Thursday night the Panthers meet the Rabbitohs and the other Friday match has the Eels v Cronulla Sharks.

Saturday has the Dolphins v Canberra Raiders, Storm v Bulldogs and Roosters v warriors.

On Sunday the Dragons v Titans and West Tigers v Knights.

Last week 20 young women travelled to Cairns to play in the Districts Rugby League tournament and to trial for the Peninsula side.

Mistee Sagigi (under-16s) and Melissa Hosea (open) (pictured right) were chosen to represent Torres Strait on the Gold Coast in mid-May for the State Championships.
