80th Anniversary News Fantastic news for the 80th anniversary with the acceptance of invitation by LTGEN Simon Stuart AO, DSC (Chief of Army) to attend the milestone event on Thursday Island.

He will be accompanied by his Aide, Captain Jillie-May Reading, the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Army, Warrant Officer Kim Felmingham NSC, OAM and Commanding Officer 51 NFQR LTCOL Jeremy Schieb. On Thursday 16 March an Open Day will be held at Sarpeye Barracks and on Friday 17 March a parade will be held along Douglas Street, starting at 8.30am at the old post office. Veterans, cadets, and community have been invited. And with just over a month before the launch of the 80th anniversary, Townsville community had started practicing the song which will be taught to school children. STORY & PICS ALF WILSON A well-attended Welcome and Information Expo at the Townsville’s Murray Stadium building last Saturday was organised through the Defence Members and Families Service. More than 100 exhibitors including local community and sporting groups, Government organisations and other service providers had stalls there. At the Uni Saints rugby league stand were youngsters Lauren Lenoy, 12, Taya Zaro, 13, Emma Waigana, 12, Zeedon Zaro, Keanu Hewitt-Watson, both 14 were there to consider their post-school career options. “I would like to be an artist,” Emma said. Taya said she would like to become a chef or a doctor, whilst Zeedon expressed an interest in a job to do with sport administration. Lauren said she was not sure but had enjoyed the expo. Keanu said he would like to be an NRL player. Dee Paul was one of three ladies on the One Tree Defence Childcare stall. “We have had a lot of people stop at the stall and make enquiries,” Dee said. At the Defence Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Network (DATSIN) were Ashton Courtney with her children Luther Cassady, aged 7, and Lucius Cassady, 5. “We have had a lot of interest today,” Ashton said.
