Skytrans resumes flights to Mer The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of Australia has authorised Cairns-based airline Skytrans to resume operations into the Torres Strait Islands affected by a recent shutdown in services.

Flights to Murray Island began again on Monday this week, with operations into Mabuiag and Darnley Islands to follow in due course.

Waiben nurse Yoko Mills has dedicated her career to improving sexual health in her home community and has been honoured with an Order of Australia Medal.

The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement in their field.

The Governor-

General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), congratulated the recipients In this year’s Honours Lists, who included the late Archie Roach (AM) and the late Brian Akee (OAM).

“The recipients have had a significant impact at the local, national and international level and are, quite simply, inspiring,” he said.

BY ALF WILSON As 26 January was acknowledged around the country, Torres Strait Islanders from near and far participated in Survival Day and Invasion Day rallies around the country.

Torres News correspondent Velma Gara had to burn the midnight oil to cover Survival Day in Townsville this year.

Proud Torres Strait Islander Velma woke up in the early hours of 26 January to attend the Dawn Service so she could take photos and record some interviews for her popular radio program.

“It was so good to see around 100 people there so early along the Strand,” she said.

Then around 9.45am Velma was one of an estimated 1000 men, women and children who took part in the 400m Walk of Solidarity from the Esplanade Amphitheatre to Strand Park.

Her daughter Patrina and relatives Genus and Trudi Passi were also there.

“It was great to see so many Torres Strait Islanders walking in solidarity with our Aboriginal people,” she said.

At Strand Park there were numerous guest speakers, entertainment by Aboriginal

and TS Komet Dancers, guest speakers and many stalls.

Velma even sat under a tent in the weaving stall which proved so popular as Wya Sailor showed how it is done.

“A lot of people sat inside the tent there to check out the weaving and there was a lot of interest,” Velma said.

Velma was glowing in her praise of Rosalind Sailor the co-ordinator from local company Big Eye Theatre which organised the event.

“It was a wonderful event enjoyed by many,” Velma said.

Mrs Mills has been with the Men’s and Women’s Health team on Waiben since qualifying as an enrolled nurse in 1985.

She was recognised this week for her services to nursing which include, almost 40 years later, obtaining a nursing degree and a Masters.

Yoko said she was happily shocked to receive the OAM. “I just go to work and try

to do the best I can, giving 100 per cent,” she said.

“I’m very passionate about sexual health.

“One of the best things in my career was when I did my nursing degree. It just opened doors for me.”

Yoko and husband Sam Mills, a nurse with TI’s renal team, also formed and led the First Nations COVID-19 vaccination team.

Torres & Cape Hospital and Health Service Acting Executive General Manager (North) Frank Grainer said Yoko was a deserving recipient of the award.

“We thank her for her ongoing service and congratulate her on this well-deserved award,” she said.

Mer flights return M Continued from P1 Skytrans can now operate under the latest world standard legislation.

Skytrans CEO, Alan Milne said it had been a collaborative effort to restore the flights.

“We are so happy to be able to bring the people of the Torres Strait together along with other Islands and connect them to Horn

Island and Cairns,” he said. “Without the support of the Torres Strait Islands Regional Council, specifically their CEO James William, these services would still be grounded.

Skytrans also announced the introduction of another Cessna C208 Caravan aircraft to their fleet to provide even more connectivity for residents.

Traditional Owners fear illegal fishing fleet in our waters Suspicious fishing activities have raised Traditional Owner concerns about illegal fishermen operating in Torres Strait waters near Iama.

A foreign vessel was seen by a local fisherman at Warrior Reef, approximately 62 nautical miles from the tip of Cape York, and within 30 nautical miles from mainland Papua New Guinea.

Gur A Baradharaw Kod Sea and Land Council Torres Strait Islander Corporation (GBK) said it wasn’t the first foreign boat seen lurking in Torres Strait waters – they said they had multiple reports of

unidentifiable vessels in the region.

A similar sighting was reported to the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) in December 2022, with little assurance of further investigation.

GBK Chair Ned David called for urgent action from governing authorities.

“These illegal vessels were able to enter Australian waters undetected,” he said.

“They are a threat to biosecurity and border security.

“If not reprimanded, there is nothing stopping the illegal fishermen from returning to our

waters and exploiting natural resources.”

He said illegal fishing was a major threat to the livelihood of Torres Strait Islanders who depended on commercial fishing as their primary income source.

Fisheries in the region are managed on behalf of the Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA) by the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), the Queensland Department of Agriculture Fisheries

and Forestry and the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA).

“Multiple sightings should warrant an investigation by authorities, and justifies an increase in maritime surveillance,” Mr David said.

“GBK has a responsibility to the people of this region to provide an avenue to respond to matters affecting the Torres Strait.

“As the voice representing the collective interests of the region’s Traditional Owners, GBK will raise this issue until action is taken.”

Climate change talks make excellent progress A roundtable of community, regional and government representatives held on Waiben earlier this month has been dubbed an important step towards establishing the Torres Strait Climate Centre of Excellence as a follow-on from last year’s Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Change.

Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Jenny McAllister said cooperative climate action for First Nations Australians was the goal.

“These discussions are as important as ever with sea levels rising at about three times the rate of the global average in the Torres Strait region,” Assistant Minister McAllister said.

“Torres Strait communities are some of the most at risk, but this support will promote meaningful consultation and action to secure their safety now, and in the future.

“The government is committed to collective climate action, and we will achieve this by working hand-in-hand with Traditional Owners and other First Nations people including our Pacific neighbours.”

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said the meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment to progress

a federally funded Torres Strait Climate Centre of Excellence.

“The Torres Strait is at the front door to climate impacts in this nation,” Mr Stephen said.

“Climate change is among the biggest threats we face not only in our lifetime, but for generations to come.

“The Torres Strait Climate Centre of Excellence will connect traditional knowledge,

lived experience and Western science to design and identity climate action in communities across the Torres Strait.

“It represents a new, nationleading model for working with Torres Strait Islanders and other First Nations people across Australia on the critical matters affecting our lives and communities,” he said.

Mr Stephen said recruitment for an executive to oversee the establishment and operations was underway.

“This Centre of Excellence will showcase and invite innovation and collaboration between industry, researchers, government and a local workforce based across the Torres Strait region, including outer islands,” he said.

“By working with Traditional Owners, remote communities and also our Pacific neighbours we can boost climate resilience and roll-out adaptation strategies that reflect our needs, culture and way of life.”

Our best achievers celebrated with Australia Day awards Torres Shire Council celebrated the Shire community and their wonderful contribution and achievements at this year’s Australia Day Awards.

The Torres Shire ambassador for 2023 was Professor Peter Leggat, AM. Professor Leggat is the CoDirector of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Vector-Borne and Neglected Tropical Diseases at James Cook University in Townsville.

Torres Shire Council, Mayor Yen Norman Loban along with Deputy Mayor Gabriel Bani and Cr Thomas Loban presented the Awards at the Torres Shire Sports Complex.

Mayor Loban congratulated the winners.

“Council and the community recognise your wonderful contribution and achievements,” he said.

Citizen of the Year Corey Ward for his achievement and services as the local bank manager of the National Australia Bank, Thursday Island Branch.

Young Citizen of the Year Kailu Luffman for his leadership qualities and for being a great young role model in our community

impacting and mentoring others.

Recognition Award Pastor Pedro Stephen for providing pastoral care for our communities and the wider Torres Strait Island communities.

Governor’s visit a success

Non-Executive Member Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Board

Contribute to the Torres and Cape community to deliver exceptional healthcare

Queensland Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, attended a special assembly in her honour at Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh last Friday.

The Prep students enjoyed an extra treat, with her Excellency and husband Prof Nimmo reading a book to the students called A Place for All Queenslanders.

WBNM Head of Campus Rick Cass said the students were mesmerised by Dr Young and her warm, heart-felt speech and book reading.

Dr Young said she was familiar with our region from her previous portfolios within the State Government.

“Our students really showed their excellent behaviour and

respect for her excellency and the vice regal party,” Mr Cass said.

“Our staff took lead roles in the assembly as well, with Tagai Cultural Advisor Fred Peters making an excellent acknowledgment of country, and Richard Matthew leading the assembly for school prayer and affirmation with our school captains, as well as performing with the students four sidaun dances from across Zenadth Kes. “Her Excellency was really impressed.”

The visit was facilitated by Torres Shire Council, including the Mayor, Cr Yen Loban, Deputy Mayor, Cr Gabriel Bani and CEO Dalassa Yorkston.

The Vice-Regal couple joined representatives from the Torres Shire Council and local

community for a welcome dinner upon their arrival at Waiben.

The Governor joined in traditional island dance, much to her and the community’s enjoyment.

In keeping with her pledge to visit hospitals and health centres throughout Queensland, the Governor made time to visit the Thursday Island hospital, greeting staff and was accompanied by Australia Day Ambassador Professor Peter Leggat AM. Mayor Loban said they were given a warm Torres Strait welcome.

“They enjoyed not only hospitality but engaging in our culture and learning of progress and challenges being experienced in our region,” he said.

Families celebrate the life of the late Erubam-le James Gela story & pics BEL LUI Families and friends of their beloved the late Erubam-le, James Ian Gela celebrated the unveiling of his tombstone at the Cairns Martyn Street Cemetery on a very hot Saturday morning earlier this month.

The ceremony was officiated by Pastor Peceli assisted by the MC Reggie Pau, and the late brother’s beautiful wife Roberta Elsie Gela (nee Lewin).

The MC kept the crowd on tracks according to plan throughout the ceremony.

A big contingent of families also travelled from other places to participate Late James’s cousin Henley (Warromie) Stephen was given the honour of reading the inscriptions on the gravestone.

Everyone was invited to the Elevation Church hall for refreshments straight after the ceremony, and the Gela/Manai, MEPLA family organised by David (Solkos) Gela and family for his late brother, to a traditional feasting celebration and cultural entertainments at the Balaclava school hall.

Part of the reason I marched today was to acknowledge, give respect and honour the 85 years of protests that have been happening since the first day of mourning, Sunshine Coast Survival Day organiser Stephen Mam says.

“Without those old people that have come before us marching and advocating for our rights, we wouldn’t have the community services and the rights that we have today,” he said.

“It’s really the day of mourning and the protests that have come after it that have set the foundation for reconciliation now.”

He said the Torres Strait community was very much in evidence on the day.

“The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have a long and intimate relationship that’s been happening since colonisation, and the South Sea Islander community, particularly here where there were a lot of black birders and slavery helped to develop the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

“We’re all part of the history here and I think of the people that quote, ‘if you don’t have your culture and know your history, you’re like a tree without roots’.

“The Tree of Life is very much a metaphor for community, but also an understanding and acknowledgement of the relationships that how we’re all

connected through country, through bloodlines and through mutual respect and responsibility – it’s community, sharing stories, listening, connection, that’s what it’s all about.

“I think it’s a testament to how strong and connected the community is here, with the turnout we have today.”

He said his own upbringing had helped him develop his perspective and commitment.

“I feel honoured and privileged to have learnt so much as a small boy,” he said. “The long nights at community meetings, the many introductions to people in the community, and there’s a lot of wisdom that has been passed down, not just from my dad, but from all the old people.

“I love listening to my elders and you have to listen deeply and give them that time and space.

“It is very much, I think, up to everyone to carve their own path and my dad also used the metaphor of culture as a boat that is anchored by values, but over time those traditions change or can ebb and flow with the currents and the tides.

“This is part of Torres Strait Islanders Sibwannan contribution, being part of the community, building relationships with Aboriginal people, nurturing those relationships.

“Now we’re very much all part of the one family, but it’s a way that we also give respect and Sibwannan for Torres Strait.”

Townsville solidarity story & pics BY VELMA GARA Support for Survival Day in Townsville was overwhelming, with hundreds turning up for the Dawn Service, Walk in Solidarity and Festival at Strand Park.

For many years, Big Eye Theatre organised this significant event and this year’s was dubbed the biggest as a time to reflect, respect and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history.

Organiser, Ros Sailor said she was overwhelmed by the support.

“Townsville was embracing and accepting of culture, also of the truth telling,” she said.

“The attendance has doubled from last year’s January 26 event.”

At the Dawn Service at the Picnic Bay Surf Lifesaving Amphitheatre, traditional custodians and guest speakers were Dr Gracelyn Smallwood and Linda Saltner.

Later in the morning many participated in a silent walk from the Gregory Street Amphitheatre to Strand Park with flags, banners and in unity.

Upon arrival, people were greeted by Wulgurukaba Walkabouts and walked

through the smoke from ceremony.

Murray Islander woman, Helen Akee, was a part of the official ceremony and spoke of the pearling and fishing industry – how the bechede-mer industry had made the Torres Strait a profitable place to live in for non-Indigenous people.

“A royal commission report of 1922 was a racist document by Labor government and showed that there were big dollars to be made in the Torres Strait with the beche-de-mer industry,” she said.

“Many businesses started arriving and setting up in the Torres Strait.”

Traditional Onwers Virginia Wyles of Wulgurukaba and Jeannette Wyles of Bindal were also guest speakers.

Their messages were of hope and support shown for the event, and for the Voice to Parliament.

Torres Strait Islander presence was also felt with weaving, food and market stalls, and performances from the Komet Dance Team and Urapun Band, featuring father and son Tom and Lawrence Neliman.

BY ALF WILSON For the past 10 years Francis Tapim (pictured) of Mer descent has done the Welcome to Country on behalf of Torres Strait Islanders at the Townsville City Council Australia Day ceremony.

The 75-year-old Mr Tapim did the welcome on 26 January at the event held at the Jezzine Barracks Precinct.

“During my welcome speech I acknowledged the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion and all Australian Defence Force personnel and talked about what a great country we live in,” he said.

“We are one but we are many.”

Townsville City Council celebrated Australia Day with a jam-packed community event.

The day included a traditional Citizenship, Flag Raising and Australia Day Award ceremonies, and also featured an Aussie

Fun Run, a free Aussie Breakfast for the first 500 people and the Great Australian Bites.

About a kilometre away at Strand Park, more than 2000 men, women and children attended Survival Day or what many also called Invasion Day. Mr Tapim said he was looking forward to the 80th Anniversary celebrations in Townsville of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion who defended Australia’s northern outposts during World War II. It will be held over a six week period from March 16, finishing on ANZAC Day.

A Torres Strait Islander dance troupe representing all of Brisbane’s Torres Strait Island community danced at Beenleigh at the opening ceremony of last weekend’s Murri vs Koori Rugby League competition, featuring 2022 Murri Knockout winners Erub United.

Organisers were Corina Reuben and her father Rupert.

“I was given the opportunity by Erub United to help them out in locating a dance group to perform at the QMC Interstate Challenge Rugby League Comp 2023,” Corina said.

“So with the help and support from my father Rupert, who is very well known within our Brisbane Community, we organised a Torres Strait Islander group to perform.

“As we live in the Capital City of Queensland, Brisbane it was fitting for all our families come together as one in unity.

“So I reached out and everyone from various age groups came to our dance practices.

“The Brisbane Torres Strait Island Community came together from all different islands to share the beauty of our songs and dance with the Community of Brisbane, and to show our love and support for Erub United.

“From all different various of age groups all came and we were very excited to take part in this movement.

“It was great to see Elders passing down their knowledge to our younger generation.”

She said the community had also organised a welcome dinner for the Erub team the night before.

“I brought our mothers and sisters together to help cook for Erub United Welcome to Brisbane Dinner,” she said.

“It was a blessing to do, we didn’t receive any funding to do this dinner, it was all out of love, respect, culture and family.

“We shared and ate together as one, this is what community is – unity as one and togetherness.”

NPA mud rally kicks up some dust Pics by Shanella Majid with thanks to NPARC. A good crowd turned out to watch this year’s Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council’s annual Mud Rally & Pig Hunt at the Yusia Ginau Oval – Mud Rally Circuit last weekend.

This is an exciting event was open to local and visiting tourists to test their 4WD skills, and join in on the fun.

Drivers, including green P platers, entered the drug and alcohol-free competition at their own risk, with each vehicle competing in two heats, followed by a qualifying round.

There were some decent prizes up for grabs including fishing gear and eskies.

Tough game brings win for Queensland Murri women

BY ALF WILSON Versatile Lyrech Mara described the 18-6 win by her team Brisbane Natives over Dunghutti ConnXions as the hardest carnival match she has ever played in.

The 21-year-old Lyrech played as a prop, a second rower and in the centres during the Women’s Murri versus Koori Interstate Challenge.

“It was a tough game

and the Dunghutti girls played it hard,” she said.

“We had to earn the win and I was proud to be part of it.”

Lyrech has lined up at several Zenadth Kes carnivals on Waiben, and many others in Townsville.

She was a member of the Deddeyal Gammaz side which took out the ladies section of the last Zenadth Kes carnival at the Ken Brown Oval in late 2021.

“I received

congratulations on social media from TI, Badhu, Townsville and Mackay where I now live,” she said.

With her at Beenleigh was her mother and role model Rothana and 15-year-old little sister Kiarah.

Another sister, 17-year-old Jahntae Mara, played for the Queensland Under-17 girls team which went down to a Samoan combination earlier in the day.

Taipans hanging in there - just story and pic BY VELMA GARA Round 17 of the National Basketball League wasn’t a great one for the Cairns Taipans with the Far North Queensland team winning only one out of three games.

The South East Melbourne Phoenix recorded a 85-80 victory over the Cairns Taipans last Wednesday night.

The Taipans remained in second despite the defeat but suffered a major blow with Most Improved Player contender Keanu Pinder leaving the game late in the third after a knock to the face.

Pinder has been shortlisted, along with fellow First Nations player Will McDowell-White (New Zealand Breakers) and Sean Macdonald (Tasmania JackJumpers) for the NBL’S Most Improved Player.

The Taipan’s grip on second spot was strengthened after an important 94-87 victory over the Brisbane Bullets on Sunday despite Pinder’s absence.

The Bullets fought hard until the end but some sharp shooting beyond the arc from bench player, Majok Deng, proved the difference.

Three starters – DJ Hogg, Tahjere McCall and Bul Kuol – each scored 23 points.

To close out the round, Taipans played Adelaide 36ers at home on Monday night but couldn’t get the win, losing by just three points – 99 to 96.

Fatigue may have been a factor due to the Taipans had played three games in six days.

Earlier this week, their second placing on the NBL ladder was safe, however, other games’ results in Round 18 may see them drop from the top two position.

Tomorrow night they are on the road again to play the Perth Wildcats.

The NBL Awards will be held next Tuesday 7 February.

Massive support for Erub United story ALF WILSON PICs BY CHRISTINE HOWES A gallant Erub United may have lost Saturday night’s Murri versus Koori Interstate Challenge 18-8 to Newcastle Allblacks but the players made Torres Strait Islanders proud.

The game was played before a large crowd at Bill Norris Oval in Beenleigh.

Erub United had many supporters from the southern Queensland Torres Strait community and some even travelled down from the Islands, NPA, Cairns and the Sunshine Coast. Several thousand more were able to watch the game, which was live streamed, remotely.

Erub United went into the game as an underdog and was missing stars Julian Christian (NQ Cowboys) and Bernard Lewis and Eddie Daniel (Northern Pride Queensland Cup).

Bernard Lewis and Dantoray Lui ran water for the team.

Champion Queensland Cup speedsters Jon Reuben and Gideon Gela-Mosby did make the line up.

Gela-Mosby had been under an injury cloud in the lead up to the game.

By comparison Newcastle Allblacks side maintained the majority of players from their NSW Knockout victory.

The match was played over four 20 minute quarters in steamy (and slippery) conditions, and Newcastle Allblacks led 8-0 after a try and two goals at the first break.

HUGE SUPPORT: Friends & families took up more than half the width of the field for the run-on, led by Captain Bradley Stephen.

Gela-Mosby was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes during the first period and Erub United defended well with one man short.

Flying winger Solomon Fauid scored a try out wide in the second stanza and at the halftime break Newcastle Allblacks led 8-4.

Newcastle Allblacks dominated during the third 20 minutes and bolted to an 18-4 lead at three quarter time.

Although Erub United attacked well and defended grimly in the last period, Newcastle Allblacks

were able to slow the game down.

Erub United scored their second try through Brandon Jackonia while Rahkeem Auda was sent to the sin bin in the closing stages.

Erub United co-ordinator Elia Ware told the Torres News it was very hard to select a few standout players because everyone put in the hard work.

“But I would have to say Gideon Gela-Mosby, Ian OuiBounghie, Tibau Stephen and Henry Williams Jnr stood out,” he said. “All 20 players were playing

with high emotions and that was because the amount of support we received from every Erubam Le and the Torres Strait Community was overwhelming.

“Playing with such high emotions got the better of us and led to two sin bins, dropped balls and missed scoring opportunities.”

Other good players for Erub were tough forwards Khan Ahwang and Josh Mene, and backs Bradley Stephen, Jon Reuben and Solomon Fauid.

Ahwang paid tribute to players from both sides for a hard fought game.

“Congratulations to Newcastle Allblacks and to our own boys we fought hard and showed heart,” he said.

Newcastle Allbalcks have claimed the title of Australia’s best Allblacks carnival team.

Erub United is undoubtedly the best Allblacks carnival team in Queensland.
