Boigu community makes history
Last week the Torres Strait Island Regional Council said they were proud to host an historic joint
deputation on Boigu Island between Papua New Guinea Treaty Village Councillors and their own Councillors.
Representatives attended from government agencies on both sides of the border. Councillors play a significant role in
administering the Torres Strait Treaty, which was first signed in 1975. They said it was the first time all the treaty Councillors had come
together since its adoption in 1985, and a special bond was shared between the two groups. TSIRC thanked everyone involved in
making these events happen – while they were there a special celebration for the official opening of the Boigu community’s new seawall was held.
