Historic Native Title sea claims determined Thousands of generations of shared history across Cape York Peninsula and the Torres Strait region were formally recognised by the Federal Court of Australia on Waiben yesterday. The full day of celebrations included a Kaurareg dancing performance before the signing of an Memorandum of Understanding between the Cape York Land Council (CYLC) and Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council (GBK). The MOU signing was followed by the Consent Determination Hearing and Delivery of Judgement by The Hon Debra Sue Mortimer, and speeches and dances by representatives of each of the groups. The historic Native Title consent

determination, which was 21 years in the making, covered about 65,000 square kilometres of land and sea – almost the same size as Tasmania. Recognising the Native Title rights of the Kemer Kemer Meriam and Kulkalgal Nations, and Kaurareg, Ankamuthi and Gudang Yadhaykenu people, the determination resolved seven partially overlapping claims over land and sea, and was the largest sea claim in Australia’s history. The agreement between four claimant groups was managed by the CYLC and GBK, who collaborated to ensure the historic claims achieved determination by consent. Continued P2 
